Flinders Quartet to launch music season By Penny Ivison

Opening night of the Peninsula Music Society 2015 season will feature the Flinders Quartet on March 21. The PMS describes them as a crowd favourite and, ‘An exceptional Australian Ensemble which is entering its second decade.’ And in May 2014 The Australian newspaper wrote, ‘... the quartet sounded as if they had been playing together for a lifetime: unity of interpretation, tight ensemble, fine balance, matched tone, and fluent dialogues between solo and collective lines.’ The Flinders Quartet perform regularly at the Sydney Opera House and the Melbourne Recital centre and the PMS are very excited to have them return to the Peninsula Community Theatre for their season launch. Baroque musicians Arcadia Accademia and Ironwood will round out the first section of the program. event on the PMS concert calendar. This year, Michael Dahlenburg, a previous PMS bursary winner, will be conducting 30 members of the Melbourne Chamber Orchestra in Beethoven’s Violin Concerto on the Saturday night. Co-president Janette Forster encourages families with children studying music to come along and experience one of the directions their studies can take them, and for all eligible students to consider applying for a bursary themselves. Last year $20,000 was awarded among the eight recipients. The Peninsula Music Society has been bringing professional chamber musicians to Mornington since 1962 and at the current venue, The Peninsula Community Theatre, since 1967. Tickets for any concert can be purchased at Robinsons Bookshop in Frankston and Farrell’s in Mornington and subscriptions for multiple concerts are also available. Local lads bow out of MKR Best mates, Matt and Rob from the Mornington Peninsula, will go down in history as the oyster farmers who failed at cooking oysters on the top rating show for 2015, My Kitchen Rules. The boys, who have been partners in a Coffs Harbour oyster business for the past three years, hosted their pop up restaurant at Matt’s family home in Sorrento. Expectations were set high with Bloody Mary oyster shots on arrival at the appropriately themed restaurant Salt and Earth. It was downhill (fast) from there with the ‘oysters three ways’ entrée and a main of quail that they had attempted to cook for the first time ever. Their dessert was an underwhelming brownie, but despite things going as badly as they possibly could, never once did they lose their cool or turn on each other in the kitchen. Between Matt’s one-liners and Rob’s friendly personality and celebrity connections (Hollywood film stars Chris and Liam Hemsworth are his cousins), everyone was sad to see them go.

MP Mag: What is the atmosphere like at the pop up restaurants? Is it all awkward silences and polite conversation while the contestants take hours to prepare the meals? Rob: We can only really talk about our experience from our group and we had that impression too going in, but it wasn’t like that at all. It was just like a fun dinner party. We got along really well with all the other contestants… and we pretty much just had laughs and good conversation from start to finish - and that’s not even talking it up. We look back on those nights now and think about how much fun we had. MP Mag: Everyone on MKR seemed pretty excited to learn that Rob’s cousins are Liam and Chris Hemsworth. They seem very down to earth despite their Hollywood success, is this something that runs in the family? Rob: I think everyone in the family are just down to earth

genuine people, and those boys have stuck with who they are no matter where they have gone in life. They have reached really high heights in Hollywood and they have always just stayed the same people they always were, which is good. MP Mag: In terms of farmed seafood, oysters are said to be one of the most sustainable options. Is that something that is important to you guys? Rob: I definitely think that sustainable seafood is very important for the future. To harvest oysters you are not adding anything to the water, they are naturally occurring where we harvest them. We don’t have any major impact on the environment at all or interfere with any of the existing communities in the water. MP Mag: And as far as eating oysters goes - are you supposed to chew them or not? Rob: That’s the first time I’ve been asked that question. Well I don’t think there is a rule there I think that any way that people enjoy oysters they should feel free to eat them that way. Some people prefer to savour the taste and get more of that taste and so they chew it. Other people just enjoy getting more of a subtle salty taste so they slurp it down but I don’t think there’s a rule there. As long as people are eating oysters we don’t care how they do it. MP Mag: Are your oysters available down here? Rob: Not at this stage but just on that, Sydney Rock Oysters are the type of oysters that we grow because we believe that they are a really good product. Matt: So we would encourage people to keep an eye out for them on menus because it’s not something that you see a lot in Melbourne but it is definitely worth a try. MP Mag: I heard that MKR was your second choice in terms of reality TV. Does that mean we might see you guys popping up on another one of these shows? Matt: We are thinking that you probably only get one bite of the pie in terms of reality TV and this was our shot and unfortunately it didn’t really go to plan. We obviously got

MONTY ROBERTS MASTER Horsemanship Seminars

eliminated really early, but we had a great time. We are glad that we took the opportunity to be on the show but I’m not sure that we will get an offer to do any other ones. MP Mag: What if you now qualify for ‘I’m A Celebrity Get Me Outta Here?’ Rob: Haha I’m pretty much 100% sure we won’t qualify for I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here. My Kitchen Rules airs on Channel 7 weeknights at 7:30pm. By Penny Ivison

Influenced by her mother, who also made clothing, Cassie began designing and selling her own hoodies back in high school. She went on to briefly have her own fashion label that was sold at boutiques in Chapel Street and Frankston. Cassie always made jewellery growing up, and was a big fan of collecting bracelets during her travels to Bali. Unfortunately they never lasted long, as the quality wasn’t there. “I used to go to Bali and come back with my arms covered in tassel bracelets, but they always ended up fading and falling apart.” She became motivated to make her own brightly coloured jewellery designed to last. Cassie’s range is the result of almost two years of hard work, but remains a hobby for her, as she also works full time. Her jewellery, which receives worldwide exposure on Instagram, was recently featured in Hawaiian magazine DISfunkshion, and was also modelled in Santorini for the Anna Mavridis fashion blog. Cassie is currently working on a range of gold pastel pieces using charms from Turkey, a collection she is hoping to launch next month. You can find Cassie’s jewellery at the Emu Plains Market in Balnarring, Evergreen Clothing in Mornington and on her website, www.cassielouise. com.au

Sick of the stomach ache? Try going chocolate-free this Easter

With chocolate shortages set to hit us in 2020, just five years away, now is the time to start a few chocolate free Easter traditions. If you start these in 2020 when a Cadbury Creme Egg costs $10, things might look and feel a little forced. Start nowand people will just assume it is what you have always done. So in the spirit of facing the chocolate apocalypse together, here are some fun, chocolate-free Easter ideas.

Bake Easter cookies Kids can get involved in baking and decorating cookies cut into egg shapes, which is a great tradition but these might only be good as gifts for Grandma. If you want something prettier, then Danielle from Sweetcheeks Cookies and Cakes in Patterson Lakes will take

it yourself and leave it at that. You can also do this one with kids, fulfilling their desires to do craft without having to do any actual craft.

Cook up a seasonal feast In Australia, as we go from summer into autumn at Easter the classic roast with seasonal vegies probably makes much more sense here than at Christmas. Many people have already swapped to Seafood at Christmas, but what we eat at Easter hasn’t really been given the same makeover. Pumpkins are an autumn food, so Pumpkin Pie makes a delicious chocolate-free dessert.

Give non-edible gifts Oxfam have adorable crocheted Easter bunnies made in Vietnam by Mai Handicrafts for $12.95 or bunnies in a carrot bag from Thailand. Locally, Main St Market in Mornington has handmade soft toy bunnies and bunny-shaped wooden name plaques, while at Emu Plains Market you can pick up festive

your order. She is the official cookie maker for Tiffany and Co and other major companies so you won’t have anyone missing a factory-made chocolate bunny in place of getting one of these.

Make your own Easter Bunny bunting For fail-safe bunting, Box Eds Paper crafts on Etsy will send you a download for $5. Another dollar or two for printing and a little bit of assembly and you have a Pinterestworthy Easter decoration for your home. Just tell people you made MARCH 2015 (41)

It must be said that creativity is not solely the preserve of the arts, or indeed, artists. Some of the most creative thinkers of the modern world are the scientists and researchers, engineers and entrepreneurs, the thought leaders, mathematicians and sometimes, the politicians. To be creative does not mean that one has to be able to draw, dance or hold a tune. Put simply, creativity is a form of intelligence, one that helps us to solve problems – and it can be taught. At Woodleigh School, we value creativity. From the play and enquiry-based programs in our Early Childhood Centres at Minimbah and Penbank, right through to our VCE years, ours is an environment that supports original, independent thought. Innovation is encouraged, and permission given for children and adolescents to make mistakes, to

reflect on those mistakes, and learn from them. Staff and students work together to make our school a place where responsible risks are not baulked at, where students can escape the fear of being wrong, or looking silly in front of their peers and colleagues. As British educationalist Sir Ken Robinson said, “If you’re not prepared to be wrong, you’ll never come up with anything original.” As educators, it is our job to encourage students to push the boundaries of expression. To step off the production line and respond in interesting and different ways to the challenges we face in the world... to be happy being themselves. This year we celebrate forty years of Woodleigh. Forty years of doing it differently, doing it better and doing it for the individual. Forty years of care and support, laughter and achievement. Forty years of character and characters, of charm, community and a collective ideal of what a school can be. So we’re having a party. And all of our friends are invited. It’s going to be a bit fancy, but that’s fair enough, we’re celebrating something very special. Tickets go on sale on Monday 27 April via the Woodleigh School website. Don’t miss out!

Think before you jump written by Andrew Van De Beek illumin8 partners It’s funny how often recreational incidents change the way we operate within a business environment. One lesson that I have learnt over the years about decisionmaking stems back to a knee injury I had playing basketball in my early 20s. While the injury was significant, eight weeks after hurting myself I was pain-free, though I still required serious surgery and a lengthy rehabilitation period. With a preliminary final approaching, and my knee not giving me pain, I threw caution to the wind and decided to play. Halfway through the game I landed on someone’s foot and my knee collapsed again. The gravity of the situation hit me immediately as I lay on the floor. In discussion with the doctors afterwards, they said that I had likely now caused irreparable damage to my knee. It was decided that surgery as soon as possible was the best course of action. Years later I am still impacted by the decision to play before allowing my body to recover appropriately. The moral of this story: Think before you jump. As Newton once stated, ‘Every action has an equal and opposite reaction’, yet how often do we make rash decisions not contemplating the repercussions that our actions might have. If I had considered the possibility that something could go wrong and protected myself against that, the outcome would have been very different. In all areas of our lives we need to use judgement and discernment, whether that is investing in a business venture, changing jobs, purchasing a new home or even taking to the court again. So what decisions are you faced with that require critical thinking and acumen, and do you have a process in place that mitigates your risk?

Everything we love about the peninsula, fresh every month

By Kristy Martin

Having a baby should be the most exciting and special time in a woman’s life. Unfortunately, many mothers struggle to access even the basic necessities when it comes to giving birth or raising a child. We take it for granted that we have clean hospitals with qualified medical staff and things like nappies, baby clothes and toys. Some women do not even have a blanket to wrap their newborn in, and for others who don’t have access to proper medical care, the complications that arise during childbirth can be heartbreaking. It is for this reason that three altruistic Mornington mothers have created the charity For Mama With Love x and are doing their part to help mums who are less fortunate, both locally and overseas. Janine, Mel and Lisa are the brains behind For Mama With Love x, which supports pregnant mothers, newborns and

children by providing ‘safe birthing packs’ and ‘welcome baby packs’ to mums in rural Africa, and MamaCare packs to women on the peninsula. Janine is originally from South Africa and Lisa spent three months volunteering in a South African township helping to deliver babies, but it wasn’t until a chance meeting with ‘Mama Grace’ that the idea for their charity was born. Mama Grace is from Mbale, in rural Uganda, the wife of a pastor and a mother to five children and five foster children. She also helps the local women through labour or when they are in distress, hence why everyone in the village knows her as ‘Mama’. Mel, Lisa and Janine met Mama Grace during a visit to Australia with her husband, who was giving a speech at one of the peninsula schools. She told them stories of the women in her village having to give birth alone and in unhygienic conditions and they knew they had to help. “Young girls there don’t even have underwear and they have to make their own sanitary pads - simple things we take for granted,” Janine says. The money raised through For Mama With Love x goes to safe birthing packs containing gloves, razor blades, string and plastic sheeting, or welcome baby packs containing nappies, blankets, clothing, laundry powder and soap. Grace keeps them updated on the amazing progress the women of her village are making thanks to the support they have received. Locally, For Mama With Love x has teamed up with Pregnancy Assist Frankston to provide new mums with MamaCare packs and they are seeking support from local businesses to help with donations for this. “The new baby is usually quite supported, so we wanted to give something to the struggling mothers,” Lisa says. “Things like maternity pads, breast pads, and lip gloss and hand cream just to make them feel special.” For Mama With Love x recently held its first fundraiser, an exclusive screening of the Reese Witherspoon film ‘The Good Lie’ at Mornington Cinema. Demand for tickets was so high they had to hold a second screening the following week. The women hope to stage another two fundraisers throughout 2015. And this is just the beginning. “We may be starting small, but we have big dreams,” says Mel. www.formamawithlove.com

The spectacularly delicious ‘Spiegelicious’ show that wowed the crowds in Sorrento over Christmas will return for the Easter school holidays due to popular demand. From March 27 to April 11, you can enter the 95-year-old Dutch Spiegeltent and see for yourself what the critics have been raving about. Spiegelicious is a world-class extravaganza of music, song, dance and laughter brought to Sorrento by Three Palms owner James McPherson, who collaborated with the show’s creator Jason Coleman (of So You Think You Can Dance/Ministry of Dance fame). Spiegelicious brings together a mix of Cirque Du Soliel aerialists, seasoned professional dancers, and some of Australia’s leading talents. Wayne Scott Kermond gives a wildly entertaining performance as the show’s emcee, Jude Perl mesmerises with her sultry vocals, the beautiful Catherine Hancock brings her chameleon showstopping talent to the stage and Seann Miley Moore leaves the audience breathless and wanting more, more, more! During the day the Spiegeltent is home to ‘Animalicious’, a fun-filled, rip-roaring journey through the animal kingdom that will delight kids (and kids at heart). With tap-dancing penguins, hip-hopping hippopotamus, rapping rhinos, very cool polar bears, harmonising monkeys, a spectacular flying rosella and even a foot-stomping elephant, this show is at

once educational and a spectacle for the senses. If you’re lucky it might even snow… The colourful costumes, dramatic lighting and heart-pounding music for both shows ensure non-stop toe-tapping, clapping and belly laughs, with a delightful touch of audience participation that makes for a party that lingers long in the memory and the heart. The Spiegeltent is located next-door to Three Palms Restaurant on Ocean Beach Road, Sorrento. Spiegelicious tickets $79.50, Animalicious tickets $45, on sale at the Three Palms Box Office or via Ticketmaster 136 100 www. ticketmaster.com.au

Added to all the excitement of the dazzling Spiegelicious & Animalicious shows, the magical Sorrento spiegeltent is now playing host to some of Australia’s leading musicians as well! After incredible live performances by Wendy Matthews and Jude Perl at this unique venue last month, you can now catch Jon English and Peter Cupples (above right) performing live from inside the 95-year-old Dutch spiegeltent, located next to the Three Palms Restaurant in Sorrento. Peter Cupples, best known as the singer from soul band Stylus, will perform hits from Stylus as he performs with The Peter Cupples Band on Friday March 6. Then on Saturday March 7, catch him as he teams up with Jon English for ‘Uncorked’- a fabulous collaboration of rock and ballads peppered with the odd joke or two.

Australian Songwriters Hall of Fame inductee Kate Ceberano (above left) is another firstrate act set to take the stage of the Sorrento Spiegeltent, with two intimate shows scheduled on March 13 and 14. Don’t miss your chance to hear the best in Aussie music from inside this nostalgic, theatrical, one-of-a-kind venue. For almost 100 years Spiegeltents (Dutch for mirror tents) have travelled to the four corners of the globe and been used as dance halls, bars and entertainment salons. These elaborate handmade wooden and canvas structures resemble circus big tops and are adorned with velvet, brocade, stained glass and mirrors. The Spiegeltent is the dream of Three Palms owner James McPherson, who loves bringing the best live entertainment to the streets of Sorrento. I’M REALLY A MERMAID Josie’s fight to save Port Phillip Bay

With her long wavy locks, a penchant for diving in the ocean and her free-spirited persona, Josie Jones is regularly being compared with a mermaid. So it makes sense the award-winning graphic designer of Share the Word design studio has adopted the image of a mermaid in her campaign for the protection of Port Phillip Bay. Josie has created a series of posters encouraging people to preserve the ocean, recycle responsibly and to pick up rubbish if they see it. As part of this project, titled ‘I’m Really A Mermaid’, Josie has spent countless hours picking up rubbish from the beaches near her home at Rye. She is well on her way to collecting one tonne of rubbish, roughly the weight of a car, a personal challenge she set for herself in June last year. When she finishes, she will proudly wear a T-shirt featuring one of her own designs (a woman holding a whale above her head) declaring herself ‘The One Tonne Woman’. “I walk around and I wonder what happened to ‘Keep Australia Beautiful’,” Josie says. “If I see rubbish I have to pick it up, I can’t ignore it. I bend over about 1200 times in a three kilometre stretch of beach and collect five to seven kilograms of rubbish. The main items are cigarette butts, lolly wrappers and parking tickets. I often find parking fines that had floated across the bay from suburbs like Footscray.” Josie began picking up rubbish when she lived in Tahiti for four years back in 2002, because litter lined the beaches and she used to see the local women burying their dirty nappies in the sand. This shattered her perception of the pristine island paradise Tahiti was supposed to be. Today, Josie lives in Rye with her son and her partner and her passion for the environment is as strong as ever. She and her partner, an artist, are avid freedivers (diving without air because, Josie asserts, it is “more fun” that way) and together they take stunning underwater photographs. She says it is up to people to be smarter about rubbish and to help protect the innocent and beautiful sea creatures she so often witnesses when diving in the ocean. “I think we need to change the way we dispose of waste, starting on the streets and in shopping centres. We need to have one bin for food waste, one for plastic and one for disposables. We’ve got a chance to change things now. It’s not too late.” It is not Josie’s style to tell people what to do or how to think, she would much rather let them make up their own mind. The posters are about encouraging people to just do the best that you can. “You can’t change other people, you can only change yourself.” Having said this, Josie’s work has in fact inspired other people to change their personal habits. Strangers see her picking up rubbish on the beach and do the same. And recently someone wrote to Josie to tell her they too would be taking up her One Tonne Challenge. She has also been asked to create a series of mermaid posters for Sunset Beach, California, proving her message has global appeal. Josie is a graphic designer, but she prefers to think of herself as a problem solver rather than an artist. “I like to be part of the solutions,” she says. “The goal is (for everybody) to have zero waste.” Jump on board with Josie’s campaign for your chance to win a luxury weekend for two at the lovely eco-friendly hideaway Big Blue Backyard at St Andrews Beach, simply by buying one of the posters. Australians from all walks of life are being challenged to do something amazing to help beat blood cancer by signing up for the Leukaemia Foundation’s ‘World’s Greatest Shave’ March 12-15. The call to ‘be brave and shave’ is expected to see more than 150,000 people get sponsored to shave or colour their hair, raising funds for research and support of Australians with blood cancer. In Victoria, the goal is to raise more than $3,950,000. “Every day, more than 31 Australians are expected to be diagnosed with leukaemia, lymphoma or myeloma. “This year 2758 people in Victoria will have their lives changed by the diagnosis of blood cancer,” says Stephanie Hechenberger, general manager of the Leukaemia Foundation in Victoria. “Blood cancer is devastating for everyone, but in acute cases, treatment must begin within 24 hours of diagnosis. For those living in regional areas, it can mean leaving work, school and family and relocating indefinitely to the city for treatment, adding to the shock and emotional turmoil.” World’s Greatest Shave is the Leukaemia Foundation’s most important fundraiser, providing vital funds to lessen the impact of blood cancer through research and free support. “Thanks to World’s Greatest Shave supporters in 2014, thousands of people were able to access the foundation’s free services across Victoria last year, including emotional support, information,

transport to and from regular treatment and accommodation for regional families required to relocate to Melbourne for lifesaving treatment,” says Ms Hechenberger. “The foundation also invested millions of dollars in blood cancer research. Ongoing research is vital because an Australian will lose their life to blood cancer every two hours. In fact, many people will be unaware that blood cancer claims more lives than breast cancer or melanoma. She continues: “Those who decide to shave also help to normalise baldness, one of the most visual side-effects of cancer treatment. What better way to show your Aussie spirit of mateship then by deciding to lose your hair for a little while, to help others for a long while. The sooner people sign up, the more money they can potentially raise. You’ll look and feel amazing.”

The Leukaemia Foundation receives no ongoing government funding and relies on the community to continue its important work. Sign up now at worldsgreatestshave.com or by calling 1800 500 088.

by Liz Rogers We all need time and space. Poets ponder on it. Musicians muse. (Think writer Maya Angelou on Caged Bird Songs or blues singer/guitarist Little Milton taking time out to …hear me some blues.) We all crave that happy place where our minds are free to roam; but how to get there? First and last stop, The Musicians Retreat in Rosebud. This awe-inspiring sanctuary invites musicians, writers and those in the fine art sectors to experience the space to create, connect and consolidate. Let me explain. Ian Pav has been living and breathing music for over 37 years. We are talking experience with a capital E. He produces both vocals and instrumentals, performs and arranges,

mentors emerging musicians (he is involved in events like The Voice of Frankston 2014), and knows the music industry inside out. He is also a sound designer and has key skills in marketing development, strategy design and event management. As a music industry insider Ian’s extensive list of contacts is gold. (He’s worked with the likes of Tommy Emmanuel, Troy CassarDaley and Deborah Byrne just to name a few). Initially he and his interior designer wife Deb bought their acre of gorgeous gardens in Rosebud with the intention of providing a place for family and friends to congregate. Ideas began to flow and with the completion of Ian’s purpose-built sound recording studio, a Musicians Retreat just

seemed like a natural extension. Ian talks; ‘It’s too good here not to share it around. We’re a B&B style accommodation where artists (writers, dancers, musicians) can create or just escape. It’s ideal for artists who are touring and want to stay somewhere their needs will be met – whether that’s to be left alone or to connect with other musicians or venues across the peninsula. They can record, write or rejuvenate.’ The Musicians Retreat offers a separate lounge with two bedrooms and a three-way bathroom. Both bedrooms look out over the stunning gardens and have queen sized beds, while the lounge opens out onto a deck which overlooks the pool. Plus it offers

seclusion. So, whether you’re just starting out or you’re an established musician looking to record, The Musicians Retreat is the perfect spot to create your (Unchained?) melody in time and space; or to just take a deep breath - and relax. Happy hideaway! *Note; Unchained Melody was the 1965 Righteous Brother’s juke box standard and became an even bigger hit after being featured in the 1990 movie Ghost. Pedal power Join the MS Melbourne Cycle Multiple sclerosis affects more young Australians than any other neurological condition, but it is not a disease people seem to know a lot about. This was certainly the case for Steven van Ruyven. When Steve was just 32, he was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS), a disease of the central nervous system. Eighteen years later, the Mt Eliza resident is a now proud MS ambassador, travelling all over Melbourne to give talks about the condition that has so drastically changed his life. At the time of his diagnosis, Steve was a high profile gaming company executive living in Sandringham with his wife and their two young children. Like most Aussie blokes, he rarely visited the doctor and considered himself to be reasonably fit and healthy. Then, quite out of the blue, he started to get dizzy spells, which his doctor suggested could be from an inner ear infection. However, the dizziness continued on and off for months and then Steve began to experience numbness down the left side of his body. He was exhausted all the time, and his constant sleeping made him feel guilty for neglecting his family. One day, Steve’s fingers stopped working properly and he could no longer write or tie his shoes. His GP referred him to a neurologist, and Steve was quickly diagnosed with MS and admitted to hospital for treatment.

“You can’t see a future. You just live to try and get through today.”

With MS, the immune system attacks myelin, the material that wraps around your nerve fibres to protect them. Without this outer shell, the nerves become damaged and the brain can’t send signals through your body correctly. Symptoms are different for everyone, but can include fatigue, cognitive and mobility issues, chronic pain, vision and continence issues, right through to total and permanent disability. Four people are diagnosed with MS every working day – that’s over 1000 people a year. The condition can be treated, but there is no known cure. “Living with MS is not fun,” says Steve. “For many of us, we look normal and healthy but are faced with daily challenges living with the disease.” Steve was forced to give up work due to the impact on his short-term memory and his decision-making abilities. He was devastated. He and his family packed up and moved to Leongatha in search of a quieter lifestyle. “I couldn’t even look after the kids I was that bad,” Steve says. “Living with MS, you can’t see a future. You just live to try and get through today.” Eventually, Steve learned to manage

Posh Wash

his condition. He started to rebuild his life, focusing on his family and taking on fundraising projects for local community groups. In 2009 he relocated to Mt Eliza and took up cycling as a stress release. Steve has taken part in the MS Melbourne Cycle five times, and this year he joins Paralympic Gold Medallist Carol Cooke as the event’s ambassadors. The ride, which will take place on Sunday April 19, has 30km or 50km courses, giving riders unique views of Melbourne as they travel over the iconic West Gate Bridge. Participants pay and entrance fee, which goes toward the running of the event, but they also fundraise. Steve says greater funding for MS research, support and treatment is vital because there is little known about the disease, including its cause or cure. He knows he is one of the lucky ones, who is able to live well and manage the condition that so many others struggle with. “I became an MS ambassador in 2010 because I could. “I am well enough to talk about MS on behalf of others who have MS, and for me that is very important.” For more details about MS, to join the ride or to donate, visit www. msmelbournecycle.org.au

Celebrating

Success

Camerons Blinds & Awnings celebrates success with Bartercard Raising a glass for its 30th birthday, Camerons Blinds and Awnings is toasting more than just three decades in business – saving approximately $10,000 a year in cash with Bartercard has been the icing on the cake. The Carrum Downs manufacturer and retailer said Bartercard has put them on the front foot with customers and ahead with business, attracting new sales and reducing expenses every time. “We keep more cash in our pockets each time we spend on Bartercard, which we put back into creating a better customer experience through improvements to our showroom and our shop-at-home service,” their brand manager Lisa Lees said. She said their success and longevity in the market has been sweet, but hasn’t come without continuous work and finetuning their services to meet their customers’ needs. “When people ask what the biggest challenge has been along the way, I always say it’s being one-step ahead of our customers and having the foresight to know what they will want before they want it,” she said. “Nothing comes without hard work but seeing our business become a household name around Melbourne and Mornington in the last six years has really been the icing on the cake.” From humble beginnings, the family-owned company started out of a garage in 1985, growing its reputation and quality to a two-factory facility quickly. Five and a half years ago, Lisa and her partner bought the business from her father with a heavy focus on expansion since. “Over thirty years we’ve evolved with times, but some things have always stayed the same,” Lisa said. “Service has always been ingrained in the fabric of our business, and we put a lot of effort into creating a flawless experience for our customers from start to finish.” “We’ve always stayed with local suppliers – all of our fabrics and components are made in Australia and assembled in our Carrum Downs factory. “What’s changed is the materials and the fabrics we use for our blinds and awnings, which all contain UV and solar qualities to not only block out but also reflect the sun.” “This makes it not only more efficient in keeping our customers’ homes shaded and cool, but also protects furniture and carpet from UV damage and cuts electricity costs.”

Lisa said the company joined Bartercard 15 years ago and have been attracting new customers and conserving cash on a range of expenses since.

“We use it to cover the cost of stationery, uniforms, office cleaning, car servicing, wine and office equipment, and I also have my eye on a couple of accommodation packages in Vanuatu,” she said. “It’s a fantastic asset we would recommend to any business owner looking to conserve cash and attract new customers.” Visit cameronsblinds.com.au for more information. Rosie Batty champions anti-violence ride

FUNdraising dinner with Rosie Batty On average, 27 children are killed each year by a parent, according to figures from the Domestic Violence Resource Centre Victoria. Over the years, hundreds of surviving parents have been forced to confront life without their children. But only one voice has resonated like Rosie Batty’s. Tyabb mum Rosie, whose son Luke was killed by his father at cricket practice in February 2014, was recently named Australian of the Year for her efforts in bringing family violence to the attention of all Australians. Here is your opportunity to contribute to Rosie’s powerful mission to help provide a national solution to the evergrowing issue of family violence. On Saturday April 11, the Ranelagh Club in Mt Eliza is hosting ‘Unite’, a FUNdraising dinner for the Luke Batty Foundation, with special guest speaker Rosie Batty. There will be a stunning three-course dinner, plus live entertainment including band and burlesque show, plus Sarah Gardener performing until late. Tickets for the event, which starts at 7pm, cost $99 per person, or $90 per person if booking a table of 10 or more. To get involved and to help make a difference when it comes to stamping out family and domestic violence, book a table by calling the Ranelagh Catering Company on 9937 1312.

On Saturday March 14, motorcyclists from clubs across the peninsula will ride in solidarity from Frankston to Rosebud to show that they won’t stand for domestic and family violence. The Anti-Domestic Violence/Luke Batty Memorial Ride aims to prove that the community can make a difference when it comes to domestic violence. The ride will take place from Frankston pier carpark and will finish up at the Rosebud Church of Christ, where there will be a reflection, prayers, music and information services available. Australian of the Year and family violence campaigner Rosie Batty, whose son Luke was killed at the hands of his father in Tyabb last year, will address the congregation. There will also be a barbecue, refreshments and custom cars on display. Participants are invited to gather at the Frankston pier carpark from 9am, with the ride leaving at 10.10am for Rosebud Church of Christ, on the corner of Inglewood and Jetty roads. The event is supported by the Ulysses Motorcycle Club, Harley Owners Group Dandenong, Pilgrim Christian Motorcycle Club and Connect Riders Inc. Eduskill Driver Training & Education gives drivers the skills, knowledge and confidence they need to tackle all types of road conditions.

Regardless of the student’s age, background or ability level, the friendly and fully qualified Driving Instructors aim to make the learning process as smooth and non-threatening as possible. Owner Michelle Millard, who is now one of the most highly qualified trainers in the industry, launched Eduskill Driver Training & Education back in 2007 after recognising a need for Driving Instructors who could actually educate their students rather than just supervise. She wanted to provide a level of excellence that was lacking in the industry at the time. Keeping her instructors up to date with the ever-changing road laws and

vehicle technology was paramount for Michelle, but the main area of concern was that the industry did not have enough Driving Instructors that could effectively teach. Today, Eduskill Driver Training & Education, is the Mornington Peninsula’s leading Driving School, setting the benchmark in training standards with an extremely high pass rate of 98%. The patient, compassionate and professional Instructors are dedicated to safety and lifelong, habit forming, skill-based training to set their drivers on the right track. Michelle draws on her previous work

history as a Law Clerk, HR Manager and Workplace Trainer, to strengthen her training, as well as her own personal experiences. Having suffered anxiety conditions associated with driving in her youth, Michelle is exceptionally in tune with her students’ learning ability and can find solutions to even the most complicated student driver problems. She is an expert when dealing with students with learning difficulties or complex medical issues, and all Eduskill Driving Instructors specialise in assisting nervous or anxious drivers. So whether you are starting out, updating your skills, or getting ready to go for your automatic or manual licence, give Michelle and the team a call. They will get you on the road to driving success. Eduskill Driver Training & Education P: 0419 376 926 W: www.eduskill.com.au E: eduskill@hotmail.com

It is Megan Luiz’s goal to create a space filled with beautiful and eclectic pieces that will inspire her customers ‘to create an environment they love for the people they love’. Megan grew up in Durban, South Africa, and the store name comes from special childhood memories spent at her family’s beach cottage which was called ‘Greedilulu’. She gave this name to the business as a way of representing the love and inspiration that those memories carry with them. Greedilulu, opening this month on Mornington’s Blake Street, brings

together an eclectic mix of local and international homewares, textiles and jewellery and will soon begin stocking a fashion range as well. Inspired by her African upbringing, nature and her travels around the world to places like Bali, Egypt, America and Thailand, Megan describes Greedilulu as having a ‘bohemian luxe’ feel, with artisan, handmade and vintage products, all with a unique modern twist. You can find such interesting and diverse items as Moroccan wedding blankets, Boucherouite rugs and vintage Berber cushions, African baskets and Bolivian frazadas. “The African spirit is a big part of who I am today as a person, and is something that I would like to share with everyone through the homewares that I have sourced for the store. “I choose

Progress at Martha Cove Village Locals in the Safety Beach area will have noticed significant construction progress at Retirement Communities Australia’s newest village, Martha Cove Village. However, it is not only the building site that has grown – the population of the village has also! Owned and operated by Retirement Communities Australia (RCA), Martha Cove Village Safety Beach is proving to be a runaway success since construction

commenced last year. Upon completion, the village will comprise 138 two bedroom villas, all of which are freestanding homes featuring study, open living, kitchen and dining areas, storage rooms, two bedrooms and two bathrooms, alfresco courtyards and lock up double garages. A further nine apartments – which are just as spacious as the villas - will occupy the first floor of the clubhouse building. “We have been amazed at the rate of take up at this village,” says RCA managing director, Andrew Philip. “Already we have 30 residents who call Martha Cove Village home - and they are a fantastic group of people!” Mr Philip grew up holidaying on the peninsula, and is clearly enthusiastic about RCA’s newest village and its residents, who have not let grass grow under their feet while waiting for the state-ofthe-art community facility to complete construction. “The residents recently commenced enjoying weekly afternoon teas where new friendships are forming and a sense of community is emerging. I can only imagine the hubbub of activity we can expect when the clubhouse opens in August. They will

have the time of their lives!” The community centre will house a club lounge, dining room, cafe, club bar, arts and craft room, billiards and darts room. For those who enjoy health and wellness activities, a large indoor pool and spa and a fully equipped gymnasium will host a range of health programs. The clubhouse also has consulting rooms for doctors, massage therapists and podiatrist as well a day spa for pampering. Outside, a bowls green is being

constructed. “I would encourage anyone interested to visit the sales office and view the display villas. Martha Cove is the first of our boutique range of villages, offering wonderful facilities in an intimate setting,” said Andrew Philip. There is still a good selection of villas available. If you would like to see the progress on site, pop into the village sales office (open seven days) and take a tour. The kettle is always on!

Baany to Waarna Festival at the Briars By Penny Ivison

Harmony Day celebrates Australia’s cultural diversity. It is about inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for everyone.

-5

Mornington Peninsula will have a unique opportunity to celebrate Harmony Day on March 21, at the second annual Baany to Waarna (Water to Water) Festival at The Briars, Mount Martha. This indigenous music and cultural festival is about bringing indigenous and non-indigenous Australians together to have fun. Crosscultural music, art, dance and food is showcased and there are lots of interactive activities for kids. This year, Baany to Waarna also coincides with the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination and Cultural Diversity Week. Celebrating these days and the theme of human rights in general is part of what gives this festival the positive atmosphere that many say makes this event. Returning this year will be the Indigenous Hip Hop Projects who were a definite crowd favourite in 2014. IHHP Are a group of professional dancers and hip hop artists who travel to indigenous communities all around Australia teaching hip hop workshops to kids. The workshops give these kids a safe space to express themselves and IHHP engages with over 55

communities annually with their week long workshops. If you would like to unleash your inner Nicki Minaj (the G-rated version) then this is your moment. The dance workshops by Rheannan Port will be back this year too. A previous member of the Bangarra Dance Theatre, Rheannan has performed all over the world and worked with the Australian ballet and in the Sydney 2000 opening and closing ceremonies. She will perform with participating children after the workshops, so sign up early for these. Nola Lauch, the popular Rosebud singer and niece of Archie Roach will be another highlight, as will voice of

the stolen generation Kutcha Edwards. He describes his work as, “Music is not what I do, it is who I am. My songs may be contemporary but they are over 40,000 years old. They come through me from my ancestors and my people and they tell the stories of what happens in a country where the first peoples are subject to invasion, genocide, segregation, assimilation and their children are stolen. My music continues the tracks of my songline.” Baany to Waarna - Water to Water Festival, Saturday March 21 The Briars, Mount Martha Tickets and more info at www.watertowater.org.au

variety. You can pack a cold salad that will stay fresh all day, or keep last night’s leftovers in a thermal insulated container. Go Bento A bento box is the perfect way to pack a lunch with punch. You can save money buying dried fruits, nuts

etc. in bulk and add a range of fruit, vegetables or home baked goodies to the different sections. Fill A Food Pouch Fill reusable food pouches with yoghurt, fruit purees, smoothies and jellies. You can also freeze over night for an icy treat at lunch time. Keep Your Cutlery Re-usable cutlery made from stainless steel or bamboo is perfect to pair with your homemade munchies. Ditch Disposable Fruit Boxes Say so-long to sugary fruit juice boxes! Fill bottles with water from home to save money and the dentist bills. A kid tough reusable water bottle or insulated drink bottle will keep water cool all day and is leak proof so no more puddles in the school bag. www.reusablesetc.com.au

Did you know that if every child brought just three pieces of waste to school each day, by the end of the year it would add up to about 30kg of waste? For a school of 500 students this equates to 15 tonnes of rubbish the equivalent of a bus full of kids! Tips for lunches Scrap The Wrap Your plastic wrap wrestling days are over! Use a reusable sandwich wrap, food pocket or lunch container as a quick, waste-free way to pack sandwiches, rolls or wraps. They’re doing it across the world; in Ireland, the States and Canada, Switzerland and Japan. There’s an annual international festival in Russia because of it, and on the tiny island of Montserrat in the Caribbean which was founded by Irish refugees, there’s a public holiday to commemorate it. So what’s all the fuss about? Saint Patrick. Every year on March the 17 the world goes green. People of all backgrounds - whether Irish or not - slip on their shamrocks (Ireland’s National Flower), garb up in green and hit the streets in the millions. There are celebrations across Ireland and Britain and in Australia too, and the pints of Guinness guzzled around the world rises to around thirteen million! Saint Patrick’s Day, or the

Feast of Saint Patrick, is both a cultural and religious celebration that marks the death of the patron saint of Ireland (Saint Patrick) who was born in the fourth century. Saint Patrick ‘found God’ himself his father was a Deacon and grandfather was a priest in the Christian church - while working as a shepherd in Gaelic Ireland. (He had apparently been kidnapped by Irish Raiders and taken there.) He returned to Roman Britain later to become a priest and then went back to Ireland to convert the pagan Irish to Christianity using the

shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity. Since his death, the legends around him have made him one of Ireland’s most notable saints. The Irish were among the first Europeans to settle in Australia, so Saint Patrick’s Day and all that goes along with it – think green, gold, shamrocks, luck, good times and Guinness – is a big part of Aussie tradition. For a touch of the Irish this March, check out The Heartstring Quartet at the Frankston Arts Centre or stop in for a Guinness at Irish bar Flanagan’s at the Pier Hotel. In Mornington you’ll find the Grand’s Sports Bar sporting green, gold and Guinness, and The Pig and Whistle in Main Ridge will be serving great Irish tucker with plenty of Irish stout to go about. Cheers to that! by Liz Rogers

What’s hot this season

Style tips from the peninsula’s best With autumn here and winter approaching, it’s time to re-evaluate your style and see what the latest trends are and how to adapt them into your everyday wardrobe. This season it is all about clean lines, wild influences, capes, furs and colour, says style guru Beckie from Miss Velvet in Frankston. “The hottest hues this autumn-winter are warm earthy tones, including black, with pops of khaki, steel and cerise (plum/pink),” Beckie says. “Fashionable prints are now a mixture of bolds and pastels all blended together with snakeskin strong in pants and capes. “The roar of leopard skin has not been forgotten this season,” she insists. “The latest look is to mix it with metallics for a fresh on-trend appearance.” The quilted biker jacket is making a strong presence in blues and tans, Beckie advises, and she encourages teaming this hot ticket item up with your favourite denim jeans or a boho maxi skirt, for a more folky-style look. “The cosy-shaped knit is going to be a hit with twists of edginess. Tight knit weaves are being seen with embellishments of zips,

buttons and leather trimmings.” Changing tack slightly, at Fiona’s of Mornington the dominant colours of the season are fabulous shades of burgundy, raspberry and red, mixed in with cerise, dusty and soft pink. In the darker tones, navy is back, and through a lot of the ranges this is mixed with black, says owner Erica Macpherson. The softer shades of blue are also featured. “These colours are represented in the Italian ranges of Twinset, Pianura Studio and Liu Jo, so are fashion forward for Australia. “The fabrics are amazing and again this season neoprene and leather is across all ranges. “In the Jean Paul Gaultier exhibition just shown at the Melbourne Arts Centre, it was interesting to see that neoprene was featured in many of his early collections.” Erica says the Mela Purdie range at Fiona’s, Clothes that Travel With You, is a great collection for all the lucky holidaymakers staying here, or for those simply dreaming of their next getaway.

THE HEALING LUXURIES OF SURIYA LOTUS SPA

Suriya Lotus Spa, located on the ground floor of 211 Main Street, is Mornington’s premier Thai luxury spa where the therapies are based on the ancient Thai and Aryurvedic Healing Principles.

The spa offers a variety of healing body and pampering beauty treatments from the famous traditional Thai massage to rejuvenating body scrubs or the famous Thai gold facial therapy. A variety of different traditional Thai massages are used to treat numerous common physical illnesses and can also help ease certain mental issues. It is often forgotten how effective regular therapeutic massage can be and we find ourselves seeking relief through expensive medication rather than looking for natural methods to help us overcome our disease. If you have headaches, migraines; back, shoulder and neck pain, sciatica, indigestion, constipation, irritable bowel, bladder problems, enlarged prostate , RSI, tennis elbow, Fibromyalgia, hormonal imbalance and its associated symptoms, pregnancy pain and stress, respiratory problems, coughing, post surgery muscle and nerve pain, arthritis, gout, ichy - dry skin, stress, depression, and bipolar, or just tired and sore feet, then massage may bring about relief and trigger your inner healing process. The staff at Suriya have many years experience and will use methods such as

the famous Thai stretching massage and herbal compress to relax and unwind you. The spa also offers a pampering, soothing ‘after sun’ massage using cooling organic crèmes. The spa special this month is a relaxing full body oil massage for just $60. The new addition to the menu is the detox foot spa. Whatever the treatment, whether it be a relaxation or deep-tissue massage or a skin rejuvenation or a facial you will find yourself submerged in the mood and sounds of Thailand as you unwind in the luxury surroundings, leaving you with a deeper sense of calm and wellbeing. The walls of the spa are graced with the fine art photography of internationally acclaimed and multi award winning artist Visuddhacara Philip Ayres. Philip’s works hang in numerous collections around the world making it a ‘must see exhibition’ when visiting Mornington or his gallery Hastings Street, Noosa. Hanks Orthodontics is a modern, progressive orthodontic practice conveniently located in the heart of Mount Eliza. Having our office located in the heart of Mount Eliza village means more to us than just making orthodontic treatment more available and easily accessible to adults and children who live, work, or study in Mount Eliza. It also means supporting the village and the wider community. We have elected to support Redkite as our nominated charity for 2015. Redkite is the Australian cancer charity providing essential support to children and young people (0–24 years) with cancer, and their families and support networks. The team at Hanks Orthodontics will be undertaking events during the year to raise money for this important cause, and we hope that if you see us wearing our Redkite tops, you will offer us your support. www.redkite.org.au

At Hanks Orthodontics, we strive to provide patients with the perfect smile that’s both

functional, and aesthetically pleasing. Dr Paul Hanks provides personalised orthodontic treatment and care to patients of all ages. Paul treats all his patients personally; you are not just looked at then handed over to a hygienist. He has a handson approach, custom bends his own wires, and fits all of his own appliances. This ensures that all his patients receive the best care and achieve the best smile possible. Before treatment even starts, you will know what method is best for you and how the process will work, along with the associated costs. You will never end up with any surprises along the way or any missed expectations. We have payment options that will help you get that smile you have dreamed of. We know that there is a strong connection between your smile and how you feel about yourself. In our open and friendly environment, our team celebrates each and every ‘smile moment’. We are passionate about making your orthodontic experience rewarding and enjoyable. Let us help you get the healthy, beautiful smile you’ve always wanted.

MT ELIZA BEAUTY THE NEXT GENERATION After being at the helm of Mt Eliza Beauty Therapy for over 32 years, Susan Verheyen has made the wise and timely decision to introduce her NEW management team of Suzie Phillips and Lisa Lazzarotto. Both Suzie and Lisa have been working with Sue at Mt Eliza Beauty Therapy for almost 19 years, leaving to raise children at times, but always returning to put their excellent skills back into practise and, of course, to continue their training. Although Susan Verheyen will be hands-on with training updated facial and skin techniques, Suzie and Lisa will be managing the salon, making changes, improving features, using their advanced techniques and overseeing staff management. Sue will continue working in their allied Medical Centre at 5 Old Mornington Road, performing laser, IPL and hi-tech skin peels, pigment and acne skin treatments. Dr. Romero and his team (Lara and Kay) are well-known for having more than a decade worth of experience in injectable treatments with Botox and fillers, and continue to support this advanced anti-ageing clinic. They are joined by Paul Hedger, well-known leading physiotherapist in Mt Eliza who has been with them for over five years. For more than four years, Sue has been running busily between both businesses, at Old Mornington Road and simultaneously - with the help of her staff maintaining the high standards of Mt Eliza Beauty. Adelle joins Sue at 5 Old Mornington Road, treating clients, with her many years experience, in IPL and skin peels, but also sharing hours with her team at Mt Eliza Beauty. No, the clients of Mt Eliza Beauty are not losing Adelle, just sharing her! Mt Eliza Beauty is renowned as the leading facial and skin care clinic on the peninsula, with high standards in facials, skin care, waxing, manicures, pedicures and shellac services. Suzie Phillips is very highly regarded for her many years experience in electrolysis, and Lisa stands out with her clients for her facials and waxing skills.

As many Mt Eliza clients will know, Jaz left four months ago to have her baby (a beautiful girl named Willow) but has returned on Fridays and is hoping to gradually increase her hours. The excellent skills of Jamie must also be mentioned. After joining the team only a year ago, Jamie has become an integral team member and her strong skillset has brought another dimension to the continuing high service of the clinic. The staff have also welcomed newcomer Brooke, who is assisting the team on a part-time basis. “These are progressive and changing times at Mt Eliza Beauty Therapy, located at 32a Mt Eliza Way, and an exciting time for updated treatments, skills and attention to the many clients, both loyal and new to Mt Eliza Beauty,” Sue says. “The industry is changing rapidly, so there is a strong need to be implementing new ideas and management styles, along with continued training.” Sue Verheyen has always taught her team to take nothing for granted. That a simple eyebrow wax is an art, and a service. Attention to detail is what defines you as a technician. “You are not simply applying wax,” says Sue. “You are creating something, and caring for your client’s needs.” This philosophy is the basis for all procedures at Mt Eliza Beauty Therapy. For over 32 years, Mt Eliza Beauty Therapy has been known for its excellent reputation in the field, with Sue and staff continually training both here and overseas, searching for what is new, what works and delivering the very latest in trends and treatments. Support this exciting future for the business by phoning 9787 7475 to make your appointment. This excellent team of beauty therapists share one goal – to provide old-fashioned service coupled with the latest techniques and high level skills, which leads to happy clients. Sue Verheyen wants to thank all the clients who have supported the clinic for over 32 years and is certain they will continue to enjoy the advancement Mt Eliza Beauty Therapy brings to the local beauty industry.

Custom Homeopathic Remedies, Vitamin C Therapy, Nutritional Science, One Minute Cure Consults, Fermented Super-foods, Herbal Blends and more… Our practice is based on proven natural supports and remedies, using ancient wisdom and state of the art science to build your treatment plan. health & beauty Have a tattoo you no longer admire? Tattoo removals are becoming increasingly common as perhaps a relationship has broken down, tattoos may be misspelled or unsuitable for the new workplace. Many people decide to ‘get ink’ without realising the issues and permanence. Thankfully at Peaches & Cream our highly qualified clinicians can remove tattoos using a medical grade Q-Switched ND Yag laser. Q-Switching creates a pulsed laser beam of higher peak power which creates a photomechanical effect on skin pigmentation as well as tattoo ink and pigments. The pulsed laser safely fragments the pigments so small that they can be metabolized by the lymphatic system or can be egested out of the body. Then the pigments will be removed. The number of sessions will depend on several factors, the age of the tattoo, the MARCH 2015 (41)

size and colour and most importantly, the components of the ink used. Each session will take approximately 15 minutes where a topical anaesthetic is applied beforehand to alleviate any discomfort. Peaches & Cream is a longstanding business on the Mornington Peninsula and it prides itself on specialising in all facets of cosmetic tattooing as well as the more recent skill of eyebrow embroidery. Added to its repertoire are hair, nails, waxing, ipl/laser hair removal treatments as well as teeth whitening and tanning. So whether you are after a no fuss tattoo removal or a relaxing massage to pamper yourself….Peaches & Cream’s highly qualified team will take good care of you, leaving your skin smooth and creamy. Dr Rick Wolfe

A specialist in laser cataract surgery Sophisticated technology needs expert skills and Dr Rick Wolfe is one of Australia’s most accomplished and experienced eye surgeons. Dr Wolfe is internationally recognised and is regularly asked to speak and present his own statistics as well as conduct live surgery at world eye surgery conferences. Dr Wolfe has been an ophthalmic surgeon for over 20 years and has been one of the pioneers in laser eye surgery since it began in Melbourne in 1991. As an ADF Reservist of 32 years and Lieutenant Commander RANR, Dr Wolfe understands the visual needs and concerns of servicemen and women. In his role on the ADF Consultative Committee on Ophthalmology, he was a principal adviser to the ADF’s policy on laser eye surgery.

What are the advantages of Laser Assisted Cataract Surgery? Peninsula Eye Centre: Peninsula Eye Centre has been caring for the Mornington Peninsula for over 20 years, providing: • General ophthalmic examinations • Advanced micro-incision cataract surgery • Glaucoma diagnosis and management • Diabetes Eye Assessment • Full retinal services, including angiography and retinal laser • Post-operative appointments for laser eye surgery The team of doctors include Dr Rick Wolfe, Dr Douglas P. Reinehr, Dr Ed Roufail and Assoc Prof Justin O’Day.

About Laser Cataract Surgery: Dr Rick Wolfe continues to spearhead the advancement of cataract surgery. He was one of the pioneers of modern ultrasonic cataract surgery in Australia when it was almost unknown here, and has taught the procedure to many ophthalmologists in Australia and overseas. Now, he is one of the first ophthalmologists in Victoria to use the exciting new blade-free cataract surgery. This state of-the-art-technology creates incisions using a laser, increasing the precision and accuracy over the traditional manual technique.

• A bladeless procedure. • M ore precise incisions, creating more reproducible results with regard to astigmatism • A perfectly shaped and centred lens opening leading to more accurate lens positioning and better visual results. • A gentler procedure due to less manipulation of the eye, and less thermal energy being generated in the eye. The procedure can correct for near-sightedness, farsightedness or astigmatism, depending on your prescription. Dr Rick Wolfe is one of the few surgeons in Victoria performing Laser Cataract Surgery.

New Advancement: Laser Cataract Surgery Dr Rick Wolfe brings advanced Laser Cataract Surgery to the Peninsula. Rather than the traditional manual technique, this procedure uses a computer-guided laser in the first steps of cataract surgery, which increases precision and accuracy. Dr Wolfe is one of the few surgeons in Victoria performing this latest advancement. Call us to book a consultation or to find out more

your stars March Aries

This month sees you assert yourself. Aries are rarely ones to take a back seat and now you are more ready than ever to pursue your own agenda. You may spend some time plotting your next move behind the scenes. Meditation and contemplation help you stay on track.

Taurus

Relationship issues are on the boil this month. Either something on your mind or your partner’s, if you have one, is likely to be playing a prominent role right now. Once you have dealt with this all is well. You are easily able to distract yourself by socialising with like-minded people.

Gemini

March sees you shine in your professional life. You can focus on getting ahead in your chosen field, promoting your ideas and cultivating your connections with influential people. You may receive positive recognition for your contributions at work. Connections with other cultures, religion, the law or foreign trade may feature this month.

Cancer

This is the ideal time to note how you really feel about all aspects of your life, and particularly about your own health and happiness. You need to incorporate anything that helps you rise above your personal feelings and see the bigger picture. Brooding does not help, but inspirational activities and people do.

Leo

Sagittarius

Virgo

Capricorn

March is a month of transition for the Leos of the Zodiac. This month sees you dwell on a project or event, which is likely to bring changes into your life. You have the opportunity to study, write and teach if these things appeal. Otherwise you need to decide what brings you the most joy and spread your wings and fly. Other people take precedence during March. If you are in a committed relationship then you are likely to be focused on your partner’s life in some way, shape or form. If you are single then perhaps you are considering a serious commitment. Otherwise a significant friend or family member may be requiring your attention.

Libra

Librans love balance and harmony. You are so adept at pleasing everyone else and your talents in this area are likely to be tested during March. Health and wellbeing, daily chores and pets all feature. This is your month to dig deep, look after others to the best of your ability, hold your tongue and to recognise your own limits.

Scorpio

It is time to look after your own health and wellbeing. This is the ideal month to take up a sport or any activity that helps get your blood pumping. Even a daily walk helps keep you on an even keel. Otherwise you are likely to feel restless or frustrated and prone to rash behaviour.

Like last month, the serious planet Saturn continues to wend its way through your Zodiac Sign indicating that it is still time for you to think and act more seriously than usual. You continue to have the chance to contemplate the past, make adjustments in the present and plan for the future. March 2015 is a month during which your creative ideas flow again. Like last month you are juggling your income versus expenditure but luckily some of your past investment are proving fruitful and you are well able to hold all of the financial balls in the air.

Aquarius

“Unless commitment is made, there are only promises and hopes... but no plans.” So says prominent management consultant Peter Drucker. This is your month to turn your promises and hopes into commitment and firm plans. You may make a commitment to your professional life or to a life plan with another person.

Pisces

It is time to focus on your health and happiness. If you are unwell or unhappy, then those around you are likely to be affected. Therefore you can be assured that others benefit when you are looking after your own wellbeing. Positive eating habits, exercise and workplace relations all boost your outlook this month.

Engagement Ring

An Essential Guide How many purchases can lay claim to being worn by the bride every day for the rest of her life? A bit like the relationship itself, there should be no rushing into buying an engagement ring. It pays to invest a little time so that any decision made today stands the test of time! So first things first, are you going to go it alone and buy the ring on your own or involve your future bride in the decision-making? We can offer you no instruction manual on what is right or wrong. What is right for one relationship may not be right for another. Best advice is to use your instinct. Some brides very much want to be involved whereas others may be looking to be swept off her feet with a surprise proposal. If you choose to buy the ring together, then you will undoubtedly find various aspects much easier such as getting the ring size right. But what about budget? Sometimes there is mutual understanding of fiscal restraints while other times there can be a very broad difference in expectations! So before setting a budget it might pay to walk into a few jewellery stores to get an idea of what things cost. A groom with a $500 budget might be a little shocked to discover that it won’t fund much of his bride’s expectation of a 1 carat diamond ring. If you choose to go it alone, then good for you. Proposing to your partner with a pre-chosen engagement ring is one of the most romantic things you can ever do. My advice though, for most guys, is to keep it simple. Concentrate on the diamond and less on the ring design. The bulk of your budget is spent on the diamond yet all too often the design is the main focus. Fashions change or she may not even like your chosen design. A stunning diamond can always be reset into something else later. A terrible diamond will always be a terrible diamond. So, down to the business end. You walk into a store and all of a sudden you become overcome with the sheer quantity of bling on offer. So where to start? Well it’s best to decide from the onset the size and shape of the diamond you are after. The process will become considerably easier from that point on. Expert advice will always suggest that you rely on your eyes when determining the beauty of a diamond and not just on the price. Want to save some money? Nothing beats tracking down a genuine diamond wholesaler willing to sell direct to the public. One such company locally is Diamond Coco in Mornington. The second thing you can consider is recycling any old gold you may have and using that for the ring. Lastly, look about for any second hand or estate pieces. For the best local tip on getting the best price and advice then contact Anthony Hansen at Diamond Coco on 1300 230 430. Diamond Coco is a diamond wholesaler located at Suite 6, 38A Main Street, Mornington. By appointment. MARCH 2015 (41)

SPEED DATING WITH ART

Love one another and care for our planet

Parade to launch Easter Aboriginal art exhibition “What’s an Art Parade?” is the question that curators Susan McCulloch and Emily McCulloch Childs of Whistlewood in Shoreham are most often asked when people spot this unusual name on one of their invitations. “It’s part art lecture and part theatrical event,” says Susan McCulloch, “and is a unique concept for presenting art that we created for an Indigenous fundraising exhibition, in which we had limited display space.” Paintings, carvings, ochres and bark artworks are categorised into regions or themes in an illustrated catalogue for the audience, says McCulloch. “A number hang on the walls while others are ‘paraded’ by a team of assistants who hold each work up for the audience as I give a commentary on the works,” she says. In this way more than 80 works can be presented in about 50 minutes – dubbed by one commentator as ‘speed dating with art’. “It’s a great way to see a wide range of Aboriginal work and be informed about the art and artists in a lively way,” says McCulloch. “Our exhibitions are very

much linked to our book – McCulloch’s Contemporary Aboriginal Art: the complete guide that details the styles and media of today’s Aboriginal art from all regions.” The Art Parade opens Whistlewood’s Autumn Salon exhibition held over the Easter weekend and will feature the work of more than 30 art producing communities from around Australia. Featured are brilliantly-hued acrylics from the latest talents of the APY Lands, Utopia, Central and Western Desert regions and the Pilbara, barks and sculptures from Arnhem Land with ochres from the Kimberley and Tiwi Islands. By Penny Ivison Merricks General Wine Store was the place to be on Saturday February 7, for the launch of lawyer-turned-artist Gee Ryan’s first solo exhibition. Over 100 people happily squeezed into the gallery adjoining the General Store to hear an engaging talk from Gee, before the place was a flurry of excitement as red stickers were popping up and the local wine was poured. Those who had RSVP’d to the event were then treated to a sit down lunch for 90, proving that not only is Gee Ryan a talented artist and local environmentalist but he also knows how to throw a great party. Gee wants people to feel happy when they connect to his work and most would agree that he has achieved this with his vivid and striking paintings centred around the theme of ‘Love one another and care for our planet.’ One of his works, the ‘Love One Another Basin’ is on display above the fireplace in the General Wine Store currently and it is able to lift the energy of the space while still giving off a sense of beauty and calm. It is easy to see why Gee Ryan has art collectors snapping up his paintings and his work is adorning the walls of some of the top law firms of Melbourne. Gee Ryan was international partner at law firm King & Wood Mallesons, but retired in 2003 at the peak of his career because he wanted to paint and explore his love of science in the surrounds of the Mornington Peninsula, another of his great loves. He knows firsthand that a career in law leaves you little time for anything else and for this reason he would

love to see his paintings in more law firms. Creating engaging work spaces is a small thing firms can do to improve the wellbeing of staff working extreme hours and under great pressure. This is the first time the work of Gee Ryan has been on display to the public and it is definitely worth a look. Small prints are available from $485 and the paintings range from $1500-$7500. The Mornington Peninsula Art Show

From April 1 to 6, some of our best Peninsula artists will exhibit in the beautiful gallery space of the Southern Peninsula Arts Centre.

A Creative Peninsula ARTS & CULTURE STRATEGY

fostering creativity, sense of place and cultural vitality

The Mornington Peninsula Art Show, now in its sixth year, is becoming a key event on the local exhibition calendar. All profits raised from the exhibition go towards the Rosebud Secondary College Chaplaincy program which offers a variety of pastoral care, and health and wellbeing programs to students. The Mornington Peninsula Art Show is supported by the Mornington Peninsula Shire, numerous local businesses, a curatorial team of local artists and dedicated volunteers. Mornington Peninsula Shire Mayor, Councillor Bev Colomb, said the Shire offers an Annual Art Acquisition Award as part of the Mornington Peninsula Art Show. “The award, now valued at $2,000, is given for the best Mornington Peninsula themed work, which contributes to a growing collection of

– An Easter Must See

outstanding local works that represent the cultural heritage of the Mornington Peninsula. I wish our artists the best of luck at this year’s exhibition,” she said. In 2014 the Shire acquired Rosebud artist John Whitelaw’s oil painting ‘Mount Martha Foreshore’ (pictured). Cr Colomb has chosen John’s painting to hang in her office, and future opportunities for the community to access and view the collection are being developed as part of the Shire’s Arts & Culture Strategy. This year’s exhibition will open at 7pm on Wednesday April 1 and will be open daily between April 2 and 6. The Southern Peninsula Arts Centre is at Rosebud Secondary College, on the corner of Eastbourne and Boneo Roads. , ALBUM CHART SINGLE OR DEMO RECORD YOUR OWN

Are you a talented musician who dreams of one day recording an album? Do you have a collection of great songs, but no access to a studio? Enter Studio 52. Accessible to everyone, not just major record companies and pop stars, Studio 52 in Collingwood has been operating for almost 30 years and is one of Australia’s top studios. Co-owners Trevor Carter and Paul Higgins built the first studio in 1986 and have since recorded over 1000 albums for both big name artists and small. They are now seeking to hear from Mornington Peninsula musicians who want to experience what it is like to record in a professional studio. “It’s not all about being famous or selling lots of CDs,” explains Paul. “Many people record just for the pure love of music and hearing their voice or their songs come to life.”

“People come to us from all over Australia, and over the years we have recorded various projects for Mornington Peninsula residents including a great progressive rock album for Mt Eliza act Podkin Fly, the now-classic album ‘Picturesque’ for Mornington’s Mandrake Garden and many young acts have graced our studios as part of the Kool Skools Project.” Dating back to 1997, Studio 52 has recorded for Mt Eliza Secondary College and Mt Erin Secondary, plus five albums for the Frankston Youth Resource Centre.

“We know there is

a huge talent pool in the region...”

Studio 52 welcomes anyone to come and record, you don’t have to be a professional or experienced musician, it could just be for the fun of making music or capturing the songs and music of a family member.

On the other hand, if you do want to take over the world with a new sound or a potential pop hit, then Studio 52 can certainly cater to your needs. The space includes three dedicated music studios, plus a photography and video production studio, all under the one roof. Many of the acts recorded there have gained independent distribution deals with MGM in Sydney or other big-name record company deals. Some of the famed musicians to have come through the studio include Missy Higgins, Delta Goodrem, Kasey Chambers, Natasha Duarté and Marc Collis in the pop realm, and blues artists Dutch Tilders, Lloyd Spiegel and Geoff Achison, plus many, many more. “Over the years we have recorded many acts from the Mornington area, we know there is a huge talent pool in the region, many great players and singers who really should hear the difference when recording in a professional studio like Studio 52,” says Paul. The three studios at Studio 52 can cater to different clients and different projects.

The best choice in Melbourne 9417 7707 23-25a Johnston St Collingwood www.studio52.com.au | paul@studio52.com.au

Studio B is fantastic for band demos and indy projects while Studio A is one of the best studios in Australia for tracking and mixing major releases, particularly when there are a lot of acoustic instruments involved, or full band live recording required. Studio C can also do full bands, with the addition of a new drum booth this month, but specialises in helping singer songwriters who need a producer to bring all the elements together for them including session musicians, singers and/or programming. Studio C also provides a world class mastering service. No matter what you need to record or video, Studio 52 can help capture the essence and the magic. Studio 52 currently offers some low cost entry packages for singers and bands, along with great EP or album packages for those wanting to make a professional release. Liverpool’s legendary group perform their greatest hits

The distinctive jangling sound of the twelve string guitar and the rich harmonies embellishing their immaculate vocals have without doubt assured THE SEARCHERS of a lasting place in pop music history. From their early beginnings in the late fifties as a skiffle group formed by John McNally and a bunch of friends, through the heady days of the sixties as teenage idols, they have comfortably settled into a position well deserved by a band whose sound has influenced some of the most important artistes of our generation. The Byrds, Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen, Marshall Crenshaw and so many others happily acknowledge their debt to THE SEARCHERS. The hit songs include ‘Sweets For My Sweet’, ‘Sugar And Spice’, ‘Needles And Pins’, ‘Love Potion Number 9’, ‘Don’t Throw Your Love Away’, ‘Someday We’re Gonna Love Again’ and ‘When You Walk In The Room’, with their record sales exceeding 40 million. Red Hill Show – There’s nothing like it! Agricultural shows are among the most popular forms of family entertainment in Australia today, and here on the Mornington peninsula we have one of the very best. Every year thousands of people attend the Red Hill Show to enjoy a great family day and be part of this wonderful community celebration. The Red Hill Show will be held on Saturday March 28 and, as always, the entertainment, exhibitions, demonstrations and animals will be first rate. This really is unlike any other event on the peninsula! Agricultural and horticultural shows have been part of Mornington Peninsula culture since 1857, when the Mornington Farmers’ Society held its First Grand Annual Show. Back those days, it was essential to be associated with the local show and the list of names of the organisers and exhibitors reads like a ‘who’s who’ of the founding families of the peninsula. Such was the popularity of these events that show days were declared public holidays in the shires of Mornington and Frankston. The very first Red Hill Show was held in March 1922, in the newly-built long grading room of the Red Hill Co-operative Coolstores. People exhibited apples, flowers and vegetables, along with the best butter, cooking and preserves from home and farm kitchens. The women of the area demonstrated their skills in embroidery and knitting and there were dolls on display, framed paintings and cream puffs baked in a colonial oven. On the morning of the first show, local residents came from miles in their buggies and jinkers, bearing picnic baskets and billies to boil for lunch.

Everything we love about the peninsula, fresh every month

A special train brought people to the area from Flinders Street, a journey that took more than three hours. Adults paid their one shilling admission and six pence for the children and when the doors opened, 1200 people streamed into the inaugural Red Hill Show to view the exhibits. A highlight of the afternoon was the wood chop, which saw an enthusiastic and large crowd gathered around the six competing axe wielders. The popularity of the show led to it becoming an annual affair, moving to the present Red Hill Showgrounds in 1923, and the story of the development of this wonderful community event to what it is today is a fascinating look at the social and cultural history of this area. Today the wood chop is as much of a drawcard as it was back then, and you will still see plenty of locals showcasing their arts, crafts and baked goods. Over the years, horses, sheep, cattle and alpacas have been included in the show – each new introduction indicating the changing face of farming on the Mornington Peninsula. More recently has seen the additions of wine, avocados, olives, berries and cheese to the list of produce coming from this most acclaimed agricultural and horticultural area, and some of the very best local produce will be available at the show for tasting and buying. The Red Hill Show will be held on Saturday March 28 from 8.30am-5pm. Admission cost is $50 for families (2 adults and 3 kids), $15 for adults and $10 for children (under 5s FREE). Paddock parking is available for $2. www.redhillshow.com.au

Seafoods

Mornington Seafoods in Main Street is a family run business that offers the biggest range of fresh, high quality seafood you’ll find in town.

Owners Theo Karamaloudis, wife Maria and son Tony are known for their welcoming personalities, their dedication to service and, let’s face it, they are not afraid to have a friendly chat either! Theo has a long history in the seafood business and therefore knows what makes a great catch and how to describe and recommend different fish varieties. He and his staff can even give tips on how to cook up a delicious seafood dinner. Mornington Seafoods stocks a fabulous range of skinless and boneless fish fillets, whole fish, prawns, scallops, calamari and Mt Martha mussels. Most of the fish is Australian, but there are a few New Zealand varieties as well. The business is celebrating its fifth year

MARCH 2015 (41)

in operation, but Theo has actually been involved with the seafood industry since he was eight years old. He grew up in his parent’s fish shops in Bendigo and Sale, and then moved to Melbourne when his parents bought a fish and chip business in Strathmore. Later, he was employed at a seafood shop in Southland and a takeaway shop in Moorabbin, before finally making the move to the peninsula with his family. Now Maria, Tony and Tony’s wife Dimi all work in the shop and other relatives help out during the busiest days of the year (such as Easter and Christmas). The majority of the seafood supply comes from Melbourne Seafood Centre, with Theo and his family getting up super early from Tuesdays to Saturdays to travel into the city and select the very best range. However, after five years they know what will sell and only stock what they need for the day. They rarely throw

away any leftovers. Some of the most popular fish varieties are flathead tails and rockling, followed by gummy flake and king dory. “We supply to individual customers, to restaurants and to wineries as well,” says Theo. Mornington Seafoods has even been featured on two seasons of My Kitchen Rules, when contestants visited the shop, TV crews and cameras in tow, to buy mussels and calamari. “It was good advertising for the shop,” says Theo. “Even if it was just for a minute!” Mornington Seafoods A: 1/234 Main Street, Mornington T: 5975 6768 www.morningtonseafoods.com.au

The Tyabb Packing House on Mornington-Tyabb Road has more treasures under one roof than anyone could possibly count. Rows and rows of antiques that you could easily rummage through for hours. But while shopping for antiques can sometimes be a hit-or-miss affair, we can steer you with certainty towards one standout gem in this huge treasure trove and that is the Hart of Tyabb Café. So much more than just a café, this ambient and underrated business is a lovely surprise, once you manage to find it of course. Open for breakfast and lunch from Thursday to Sunday, the café features a pleasant indoor dining area with polished timber floors, marble tabletops and floor-to-ceiling windows. There is also a relaxing alfresco patio and deck among the gardens that will leave you feeling miles away. Whether you are dining alone with a great book, or sharing a meal or snack over a laugh with friends, the Hart of Tyabb Café has a wide selection of affordable dishes to cater to a range of tastes. All items are made by the staff and the seasonal menu has been created specially by head chef Dean Caldwell, who strives for that perfect balance between café fare and fine dining. You’ll find things like the classic big breakfast or eggs benedict, as well as avocado smash with mushrooms and feta on the breakfast menu.

MARCH 2015 (41)

For a light brunch, you’ve got smaller items like the soup of the day or the toasted ham and cheese sandwich. Perhaps you fancy a glass of wine accompanied by the scrumptious tasting board, a heavenly creation made up of local cheeses, meats, bread and biscuits. If you’re feeling particularly hungry, you can order the towering (and incredibly popular) beef burger, which comes with housemade beetroot chutney, bacon, lettuce, cheese, crispy onion rings in panko crumbs and a side of chips. For something slightly different, try the potato and salmon croquettes or select from the ever-changing seafood and salad dishes. Vegetarian and gluten-free diners are also catered for. If you are stopping by for organic Jasper Coffee after perusing the antiques, be sure to also check out the range of yummy cakes (try saying no to the triple chocolate cheesecake!) that will have you questioning whether you can get away with just one more slice… It’s like owner Tony Hart says, “The Hart of Tyabb Café is proving to be a quality destination that people want to come to in its own right.” So get in now before the secret’s out! Paying homage to the 1972 Rolling Stones album ‘Exile on Main Street’, comes the newly rebranded bar. exile.

While Merc’s largely focused on the craft beer and tapas, bar. exile will cater to a more diverse clientele.

Formerly ‘Merc’s Bier Café’ in Mornington’s Main Street, owner John Dowber says the venue has undergone a design facelift both internally and externally following the departure of his business partner Paul Mercurio back in December.

“We’ve kept the best of what we had before, regarding the tapas style, but the additional dishes have matured the food offer and given it more appeal.”

with avocado, tomato and goat’s cheese.

Having more of a bar outlook than a café would also cater to a broader spectrum of clientele.

There is also berry bircher and fruit toast to enjoy with the excellent coffee and tea selections.

Handpicked by our team of chefs, you will now find a more diverse menu of light & refreshing, healthy & hearty dishes.

“We do sensational breakfasts here, there is no doubt about that,” says John.

“Being a tragic Stones fan, I have taken it back to my original name for the venue when I acquired it back in April last year. It really couldn’t be anything else!” says John. An innovative design collaboration with Stuart James (venue manager), has transformed the venue to what John considers to be better than his original design vision. As John says: “Stuart’s input to the interior gives the bar great impact. The café look has been ‘pubified’!” Along with the new name and ambience comes an expanded menu, improved craft beer/wine offer, and a change in direction for the business.

“This is a now a more balanced dining and drinking experience,” explains John.

Examples from the new and improved menu include the delicious Prawns Alla Chilli and the popular Lamb Kofta. There is also a specials board that is regularly updated with delicious chicken, seafood and salad dishes. bar. exile is open for breakfast from 8.30am and John says the dishes are both innovative and impressive. You’ll find things like smoked brisket with scrambled eggs and seasoned tomato, poached eggs with homemade salsa or chef’s hollandaise and the smoked trout

“There are so many great breakfast cafes on Main Street already and we are not trying to take away from that, but we wanted to provide our customers with something a little bit different. “It’s the best kept secret on Main Street.,” he insists. Well… not for long. The original friendly and welcoming staff have remained and John acknowledges their hard work and dedication to service. He says he doesn’t make the team wear uniforms because he believes this stifles their individual personalities.

“The more relaxed you can make your staff, the more natural they will be with our customers. “It is important their personalities add to the ambience of bar exile.” bar. exile is open until late five days a week (Wednesday to Sunday), so you can stop in to enjoy a meal, snack or beverage at your leisure. There are a wide variety of beers available, including craft beers and international beers, regional and international wines, and a full range of spirits. “I want our customers to come here and enjoy the whole exile experience again and again,” says John. bar. exile A: 25 Main Street Mornington T: 5973 6372 25 Main St, Mornington | 5973 6372

NEW ROSEBUD VENUE ON TREND It seems that every day fresh and modern businesses are popping up across the peninsula, helping to bring the style and sophistication of the city to our region. The Milbri in Rosebud is no exception. Launched back in December and situated on Point Nepean Road (opposite the carnival grounds) this hotspot is just what the locals ordered. Offering edgy food dishes with a hint of a South American theme, premier coffee and a classy cocktail bar, this new business is proving to be a real crowd pleaser. The Milbri is the brainchild of Chris Miller and Chris Fabri (Milbri is a hybrid of both their surnames) who believe that fresh honest food should be accompanied by great service and refreshing beverages. The South American theme comes from Chris Fabri’s extensive travels around the continent several years ago, and as a result The Milbri also stocks a fantastic selection of South American rums, including Flor de Cana and Diplomatico. Chris Miller has a passion for the best locally grown ingredients, and even uses produce from his own backyard. “Visitors from town will be welcomed with top notch food, something a little different from behind the bar, and locals will be suitably impressed with the warm welcoming hospitality that has brought people back to visit and live in Rosebud for decades.” The Milbri is open seven days a week for breakfast, lunch and dinner, as well as catering and functions. Have a cheap and cheerful brunch or lunch with creative and affordable meals, and finish or start with the Milbri espresso blend coffee, roasted by Little Rebel.

The perfect indulgence to help you relax and take the edge off the working week, or take a special someone out for a bit of romance in the seductive bar area. Beside the bar you will find a prominent feature wall covered in vintage newspaper clippings from the days both Milbri owners were born. Just one of the many features that make The Milbri a funky new venue with its own individual style. Definitely a place worth checking out. Be brave and try something unusual, like the Jamaican Chicken with spicy Sailor Jerry (rum) banana or the mouthwatering Chilean-style Dog with avocado salsa, cheese and chimichurri. However, if meat is not your favourite ingredient, there are some lovely alternatives like the popular pumpkin and zucchini salad with goat’s cheese, candied walnuts and pomegranate dressing. The breakfast/brunch menu is equally impressive, offering unique dishes like the Crispy Cabbage and Sweet Pea Frittas with smoked salmon, avocado salsa, yoghurt and almond dressing, or the delicious Potato and Leek Hash with mushroom duxcell, romesco sauce, spinach and poached eggs. Not your run-of-the-mill breaky fare here, but you will find some more traditional dishes available too. At Licciardo’s Gallery Bar & Grill

Mt Eliza’s chef extraordinaire, Rob Licciardo, is back!

From his recent travels to Europe, he brings back a brand new menu including his fantastic Portuguese seafood dish cooked in the traditional cataplana pots – it’s a taste sensation! The Portuguese are renowned as the seafood kings of the world and the cataplana pots were originally used back in the 15th century for fish and seafood stew/dishes. Traditionally made from copper, Portuguese fishermen would take their cataplanas on fishing trips with them to cook their fresh catch. They would barter with the locals to be able to add in vegetables, herbs and wine

that, when cooked altogether would create such a marvellous and flavoursome dish that (just like Rob’s other specialty, The Plank) can be shared between two people. Served with crispy bread and salad, what a perfect healthy meal. Come and experience Licciardo’s famous ‘Sing For Your Supper’ Sundays from 5pm in the beer garden under the beautiful oak tree, or dine inside the relaxed brasserie dining area. You should also consider Licciardo’s as a unique and memorable venue for your wedding – they won’t be beaten on price! Licciardo’s Gallery Bar & Grill A: 1408 Nepean Highway, Mt Eliza T: 9787 2001

It’s all about the bedroom at Snooze Mornington

Legend says when you can’t sleep at night it’s because you are awake in someone else’s dream…

Designs to stand the test of time Even if you know little about tiles, feature walls, stone and mosaics, it is definitely worth a visit to Lifestiles Design Studio. Lifestiles is a dynamic business that is constantly evolving, it stocks an exquisite collection of high quality tiles, stones, and wide oak flooring. You’ll find everything from embossed tiles by Spanish architect and designer Patricia Urquiola to handmade feature tiles, timeless porcelain and stone, and beautiful pearlescent mosaics. We say you just don’t have the right mattress. It’s time to slip into Snooze Mornington and get yourself sorted. 2015 is here, and gone are the days when you walked into a bedroom store and had to lie on every mattress to find out which you wanted to buy. Nowadays, BedMATCH can take care of everything for you. BedMATCH is a free in-store system exclusive to Snooze that removes the guesswork when it comes to buying a mattress. This state-of-the-art technology is revolutionising the bedroom retail sector, saving you, the customer, time, money and all the aches and pains (and sleepless nights) that come with buying the wrong mattress. Fitting you to the right mattress is similar to finding the right pair of glasses, or running shoes - it’s different for everybody. And with BedMATCH now available at Snooze Mornington, the peninsula’s leading bedroom

retailer, things have never been easier! All you have to do is visit them at the Peninsula Home Centre and ask for your free BedMATCH assessment, which works in three very simple steps. First, the BedMATCH system asks you and your partner a range of questions, including how you like to sleep and if you have any aches or ailments. Second, you and your partner will lie on the bed and BedMATCH will take your measurements. “The relaxing BedMATCH process feels like a gentle massage as it measures you to recommend mattresses providing the best postural support for your body type,” says Sarah Miller, Snooze Mornington franchisee. “No other bedding retailer offers this level of detailed analysis and given your mattress is designed to last 10-15 years, we want to make sure it’s going to be the right one for you.” Using a system that draws on in-depth scientific research, BedMATCH prints a profile listing a range of mattresses found at Snooze that can better suit your individual sleep needs. It’s that

easy. Pair your perfect mattress with your ideal base by using the Snooze BedBUILDER system that makes custom building your own bed simple, affordable and fun. Snooze also has the latest in quality bedding, furniture and accessories suited to a range of styles and budgets – everything you need when it comes to creating that perfect nighttime sanctuary we call the bedroom. Most people renovate once or twice in a lifetime, if they’re lucky.

More often than not, a renovation is in order for the potential of a house to be fully realised. But sometimes, a simpler refurbishment is possible. The first question you need to ask is, ‘Does the house have good bones?’ meaning a great floor plan where the rooms are well proportioned and flow logically from one space to the next depending on the way that you use them. Adapting the way you live to the way a house flows is much easier when the foundations are right. Good bones can get you around a lot of other shortcomings. It is almost all you need. Sometimes a purely cosmetic refurbishment is all that is required and can be no less transformative. From new colour schemes to polished floors. Kitchens that have a good layout and well-made existing joinery sometimes just need re-fronting and their bench tops updated, topping them off with some new hardware.

decor home garden

RENOVATE OR REFURBISH? More obvious game changers around the house, such as light fittings, can transform a room without altering the original structural integrity. This also a great way to improve a lacklustre house and give it renewed personality. However, taking a low intervention approach when the bones aren’t right could end in a costly exercise. For instance, if the structure doesn’t have enough storage. Perhaps your house has an extension that is out-of-date or has a cramped, dark living area or a poor-functioning kitchen with no storage. Or you’ve got a growing family where privacy and own space is an issue. If this is the case, the house may need an overhaul and adding a room or level may be required. If you are thinking of renovating or refurbishing, give the team at Clever Colour & Design a call. For a long time it was Karen Foster’s dream to help create gorgeous, stylish and relaxing interiors for other people’s homes. Harnessing her passion for all things beautiful, Karen was able to turn her dream into a reality back in January, when she opened her own furniture and homewares store in Dromana called ‘A Room with a View’. Creativity comes easily to Karen, who has been an artist on the Mornington Peninsula for the past 13 years and always gets a thrill when she is able to create something individual and strikingly beautiful at an affordable price. “I hunt high and low for my customers when I’m buying and with over 40 suppliers, it keeps me very busy,” she says.

All products must meet her strict criteria, they must be unique, aesthetically pleasing and also affordable. “We import prints from Italy (exclusive to my shop) and carefully select the framing to complement,” says Karen. “John William Waterhouse, an English turn of the century artist is a firm favourite of mine. He painted in the Pre-Raphaelite style, very romantic.” Karen has a passion for all things French. Their style, attention to detail and aesthetics in all things is reflected in much of the styling you will find at A Room with a View. Whether it be The Hamptons look, French provincial or beach house, style and elegance are the key features of any interior, says Karen, but above all else is the emphasis on comfort.

“Particularly in the living room. This is the room where we spend most of our time relaxing, so it has to invite you to ‘come and sit a while’.” “We also stock a range of unique French fragrances and room sprays... and we don’t forget the men. “We have the most divine room spray which smells just like a sexy Italian man has passed by!” Now that is one design feature many ladies will want in their homes. A Room with a View is located at Shop 4, 277-281 Point Nepean Road, Dromana. It is open from 10am to 4.30pm Tuesday to Saturday or by appointment. Phone 5981 8033 or email info@aroomwithaview.co

As our summer crops begin to fade out and the days become shorter, the time is ripe to start planning for the cool season in the garden. But first we need to consolidate. Once the tomatoes, pumpkins and other main crops have given all they can, they can be carefully removed from the soil, torn up and incorporated into the compost pile. The free beds can then be layered with old compost and mulched ready for autumn plantings or a green manure crop. We can also begin sowing seeds in punnets for your cool season crop now. Broccoli, beetroot, cabbage, cauliflower, celery, kale, mustards, silverbeet and all the salad greens can be readied. Then in the next few weeks we can direct sow our broad beans, peas, radishes and turnips. Early onions and garlic bulbs will also go in during April and May. If you are new to growing your food at home or are thinking about getting started, this is a good time to start preparing your yard to grow more fruit and vegetables. If you have a back or front yard that receives more than 4 hours direct sunlight during winter you will be able to grow a significant proportion of your fresh food at home throughout the year. It

Everything we love about the peninsula, fresh every month

John Barro has been the owner/operator of Tile Duct Carpet Cleaning for more than 22 years and has now brought his wealth of cleaning experience to the Mornington Peninsula. Having served the suburbs of metro Melbourne for many years, John built his business by cleaning carpets and upholstery and later introduced the cleaning of heating and cooling ducts, grout and tiles. He personally services his clients, with no subcontractors or franchisees, and provides a service that’s second to none. “If you’re considering cleaning your ducted heating system, it’s important to realise that up to 90% of the dust (made up of dust mites, pollens, germs and fungi) is located

just requires a bit of planning to work out the most suitable areas for your vegetable beds, fruit trees, berries, and … don’t forget the chooks! The most common method of backyard vegetable growing these days is using raised beds, constructed using rock/stone, corrugated iron or timber. Some thought should go into the material you use for your beds, as there are many options available. With most building materials there is a recycled alternative to consider that will do the same job as a new product, and there are some manufactured products that you might choose to stay away from all together (such as imported pre-fabricated beds). As far as health concerns go though, it is important to know if any of the materials you use have been chemically treated in any way, as some timbers are. Do some research! With the onset of the cooler weather and some rain now is a great opportunity to get some more plants in the ground, in particularly fruit trees and droughttolerant indigenous plants. Bare rooted fruit trees will be coming on shortly so it’s time to have a think about what fruit the family would like to enjoy from

in the air return ducting and heater interior. The dust and germs stored here breed and multiply and lay ready and waiting to blow themselves around your home for you to breathe in.” And as for the carpets where all that lays in wait…. John combats it using a restorative seven-step process with separate wash, rinse and dry cycles. His method is different to all others – the wash cycle softens deep down dirt and sticky residues and the rinse cycle removes them together with the cleaning solutions. Carpets stay cleaner for longer with this method and it is regarded as the most thorough way to clean carpets. Moving over to the tile cleaning section of the business, John’s specialist equipment leaves clients astounded at how years of built up grime and dirt is removed. More in depth information on all three sections of (Peninsula) Tile Duct Carpet Cleaning can be viewed on the company website at www.tileductcarpetcleaning. com.au Call 0404 326 595 or email info@ tileductcarpetcleaning.com.au for further details.

the backyard. You may be surprised at the range of varieties you can grow on the peninsula. As with all jobs in the garden, preparation is the key. Taking the time to plan your food garden will ultimately reward you with an abundance of fresh fruit and vegetables while maintaining an attractive and functional space.

And 2015 is set to be the biggest and best year yet for Quasimodo, with the flashy new Bell Tower Café being constructed onsite and the addition of a host of new products and services, including the highly awaited Quasimodo brand (Corten) fire pits. One of the newest additions to Quasimodo is the Vegepod - the easiest way to grow your own vegetables right in your backyard. Vegepods are modular garden kits that connect together easily with a fully functional base container and side panels than can be used to create raised gardens in your yard or to expand your pod’s growing depth and area. While

durable already, you can also attach a hinged vegecover to your pod to protect your crops from weather, animals and pests. Vegepods are self-watering, eco friendly and can be raised in height up to 80cm so you no longer have to bend down to reach your garden. Your back will thank you! They are simple to use and great learning tools for the kids - just add bagged potting mix and away you go! You’ll be feasting on your own crop of delicious, healthy vegetables before you know it. While you’re in-store, check out another of Quasimodo’s innovative products – the Versabox. Versabox is a multipurpose outdoor decorative box that can be used to house plants and herb gardens, and is great for storage, seating and water features. You can even use it as an esky and store your beers inside! Think you’ve heard enough reasons to visit Quasimodo? Well, this is only the beginning. The friendly and qualified team are also experts when it comes to water features, bird baths, instant turf and natural stone paving. And we can’t forget the cream of the crop – Pentablock. It has been described as ‘Lego for adults’ (and just as fun!), but in all seriousness this new state-of-the-art construction method is literally taking the building industry by storm. Pentablock is a unique construction block system with a natural stone façade that can be used to create retaining walls, feature walls, swimming pools and fencing.

VEGEPOD It is such a high quality product that it can be used up to seven storeys high in domestic and commercial construction. But it’s stronger, faster and cheaper than other materials AND stacks together dry, with no mortar needed. We know what you’re thinking – where do I sign up? Before you do anything, step inside the Garden of Quasimodo and see it for yourself. They’ve got everything you need to create your very own slice of outdoor paradise.
