Exclusive pink argyle diamonds In August 2005 I was looking to establish a unique new jewellery business in Mt Eliza, when I met the late John Richards of Hall & Hall Real Estate. John leased me a small shop in Ranelagh Arcade, where I remained for the next 5 years, before I moved out in October 2010 to our current location. So in August 2015 Gouzlan celebrated its 10 year anniversary in Mt Eliza. Over the years we have constantly updated and expanded our unique jewellery collection and we are still going strong in sales, repairs and remodelling. The latest addition to our jewellery collection is the Blush Pink Diamond Jewellery range. This range is crafted from 18 carat gold with an exquisite blend of fine white diamonds and Australian

natural Pink Diamonds, and is available in rings, pendants and earrings . These Pink Diamonds which are mined from the Argyle Diamond mine, East Kimberley in Western Australia are the rarest and most precious diamonds in the world, with the supply of these diamonds becoming even rarer. Gouzlan is now an exclusive stockist for Blush Pink Diamond Jewellery on the Mornington Peninsula, in fact we are one of only a handful of stockists in Melbourne. The future is now at Toorak College BY LIZ ROGERS

Kristy Kendall is young, has two small boys, a Master’s degree in education (majoring in psychology), a double major in maths and drama and a CV that reads like she should be a lot older. Her voice is full of enthusiasm as she chats down the phone about dragging teaching and education into the 21st century and how she is going to do it – and you know she will. At just thirty six years old she’s already the headmistress of Toorak College in Mt Eliza and although she’s only been in the role since January, she is determined that a) each of her students will get the well-rounded education they deserve and b) that Toorak College will be a leader in what teaching should look like for future generations. She explains. ”I want to encourage our girls to go their own personal route and to broaden their opportunities and yes, to fail! Failing is how we learn and grow. We can’t expect to be on top of our game every day and we need to explore how we communicate and engage on different levels. I intend Toorak students to be the drivers of their own learning.” Toorak College is co-educational from early learning through to grade four with a focus on Reggio Emilia principles. Kendall has got her students picking their level of challenge each day from

grade five to year eight and dissecting their own strengths and weaknesses as learners. “The learning is in the way they develop coping mechanisms and problem solving skills and experiment in style,” she continues. “Our year nine Beyond Boundaries program with trips to India, Malaysia and indigenous communities opens minds and challenges ideals, while our VCE Edrolo program” (curriculum focused video lessons which enable students to watch videos of different teachers and complete live practice exams) “is challenging the way we learn. Next year we’ll look to replace text books and are already investigating redefining what a teacher’s role is in modern day education.” This exciting and thoroughly inviting headmistress is on a pathway to create, educate and invigorate her students. She moves from class to class to get to know them, coaches three aerobics teams and continually answers and asks, “Anything worthwhile takes hard work” she says, and one thing’s for certain she’s not afraid of hard work now, or in the future – a great future for Toorak College. Be Brilliant Be You Wardle House is so much more than a primary school. The first few years of school, from Prep to Year 4, are the ones in which we see an enormous amount of development socially, emotionally and academically in children. These years lay the foundation for what lies ahead. Wardle House understands this. It is the right size; small enough that we know your child as an individual and large enough for broad co-curricular offerings in Sport, Music and the Arts. It is also the right environment. An environment that encourages inquisition, curiosity and sets every student up for their own personal growth and success. At Toorak College we welcome boys and girls from the Early Learning Centre to Year 4, with a girls’ only approach to learning from Year 5 onwards. We are proud of our small class sizes and our attention to personalised learning.

Styled to perfection with Autumn Winter Looks Euro Collections has been outfitting women for 49 years. This Mt Eliza institution caters for all female figures from the most petite through to plus sizes and offers a complete styling experience that you won’t get anywhere else. Yvonne explains; ‘We can make anything. Clients can come in-store and select straight from the rack (think European and Australian designs full of texture, colour and individual style) or can extract different design elements from a selection of pieces to create their own look. My full time tailors have been with me for over 20 years and are experts. Every Euro Collections piece is completely wearable. If I’m not comfortable in the shoes, then no-one else will be either.’ Yvonne selects all the pieces herself. She used to travel to Europe twice a year but now stockists come to her. The Elisa Cavaletti range is designed by Daniela Dallavalle for women who want the freedom to lose and rediscover themselves every day. Wrapped in sophisticated, comfortable clothes, they experience encounters, journeys, glances, fragrances and flavours. The total look appeals to women of all ages all over the world who share the same love for life, attention to detail and great sensitivity to the innate beauty in everything around us. With two new ranges for the fuller figure (up to size 24 with nothing over $200), Yvonne has all women covered. Her selection of shoes, hand bags/wallets, jewellery and scarves plus the right styling advice makes Euro Collections a must visit when in the Village. Her interstate and overseas clients make sure they do, and so should you. Yvonne specializes in special event dressing for weddings including Mother of the Bride and Groom. It’s all about the timing BY LIZ ROGERS

Peta Murphy is a Mt Eliza local. She is a Labor candidate on a mission to be the first woman to represent the electorate of Dunkley. Peta explains. “Women need to have a stronger voice, whether in the areas of health, business, sport and politics. We are a huge under-utilised resource and this needs to change.” “I was always interested in justice policy and trying to work out how to make the streets safer, address domestic violence and support victims of crime. My father pointed out an ad in the paper in 1999 for the position of Federal Justice Policy Advisor to the ALP. I got it and worked for Hon Duncan Kerr in Canberra for three years’, she continues. In 2002, she left Canberra politics and began practicing as a criminal defence lawyer in Melbourne. She became a barrister in 2007. In 2011 things changed when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. It was this experience that forced Murphy and her Baxter boy husband Rod (Glover) to reflect on what really matters. They bought on the Peninsula at the end of 2011 to be closer to family. “All these experiences have led me to where I am today. I am passionate about education and renewables. Gonski schools funding will ensure that all children have access to high quality education and resources, and Labor is committed to renewable energy because it is good for the environment and for local jobs. We have to deal with emissions. Climate change is real.” And so is Peta Murphy. https://www.facebook.com/PetaMurphyforDunkley (see Mornington Peninsula Magazine for interviews with other candidates including Liberal Candidate Chris Crewther.)

Scoliosis Treatment for the Peninsula Daniel Comerford, Osteopath at Victoria Sports & Rehabilitation Clinic in Mt Eliza and Nick Muller, Orthotist at Peninsula Orthotics in Mornington are working together to provide scoliosis bracing services to patients in Victoria. Daniel has completed extensive training in the USA and Germany in the Schroth Method (Scoliosis Specific Exercise Program) and ChĂŠneau-Gensingen Bracing and Nick has previously worked at the Scoliosis Clinic at the Royal Perth Hospital. Scoliosis is a 3 dimensional deformity of the spine and is more common than you think. Epidemiological studies have shown that 2-4 in 100 people have a scoliosis, while 2-4 in 1000 requires bracing at a minimum. We also regularly see older patients presenting for Schroth Method training in order to reduce their pain, these are patients that could have been helped with this style of bracing if it was available when they were adolescents.

The Schroth Method and Bracing is a conservative and integrated treatment approach to scoliosis both supported by high level research, bracing aims to improve the curve along with the Schroth Method, which also aims to improve the curve, reduce pain, improve cosmetic appearance and maximise bracing outcomes. Bracing is primarily used for adolescents but the Schroth exercise program can be tailored for adolescents and adults with mild, moderate or severe curves. The ChĂŠneau-Gensingen brace is fully customised to the patient based on their specific curve pattern. Daniel and Nick are involved in the bracing process from start to finish; each brace is individually designed by Dr Hans-Rudolf Weiss (Orthopedic Surgeon in Germany) and manufactured by Nick in Mornington. The standard time from measurement to fit is 7 days but can be completed in as little as 72 hours in emergency cases. Our treatment approach to scoliosis is multidisciplinary and we liaise directly with your specialist and other treating practitioners.

Myotherapy Verses Remedial Massage

Most people are unfamiliar with the term Myotherapist, however after visiting Lotus Chiropractic you’ll soon learn how they differ from remedial massage therapists. Myotherapists are muscle experts. They specialise in assessing, treating and managing various types of injuries or complaints that affect muscles, ligaments and tendons by using soft tissue manipulation techniques. Joshua Fita, Principal Myotherapist at Lotus explains. “Clients come to see us because we offer that extra level of expertise. We have the training to diagnose complaints, treat conditions with a hands on approach plus we offer solutions to help address the injury at home.” Myotherapy includes dry needling, cupping, functional taping methods and corrective exercises to stimulate

the body’s self-healing mechanisms. Therapists work with more specificity as opposed to conventional massage. All ages and physical states can see the team at Myofit. “We see young growing kids, adolescents and the elderly, weekend warriors, elite sportsmen and women and desk and office bound workers’, continues Josh. “All treatment is adjusted to individual clients” and consultation fees are cost effective. Treatments can be claimed under private health insurance and Myofit at Lotus offers on the spot claims. Call today on 9787 8288 to book an appointment. Walking the talk BY LIZ ROGERS Ron Smith is a goer. Enthusiasm, determination and resilience all come to mind when chatting with this 71 year old who left school at 13, began boxing at 15, and now with 108 fights, six children, 27 marathons and many triathlons and open water swimming races under his belt, is embarking on the next phase of his inspirational life. ‘I’m feeling stronger and healthier than ever. Now I want to share my life experience with the wider community.’ (Ron’s father died when he was young and he got into a bit of trouble when he was 15, plus he’s trekked the Himalayas, walked the Milford track in New Zealand and travelled extensively.) ‘I’ve been mentoring kids with my wife Sharyn at Mt Eliza Boxing Centre for years and seen the results. People can turn their lives around – I did - sometimes you just need direction and support.’ Ron is keen to get into schools to set up Q & A sessions with teenagers. ‘Kids need someone to rely on and a safe place.

FOR YOUR SKIN - THE TIME IS HERE…. Sue Verheyen is well known on the Peninsula as the owner of Mt Eliza Beauty Therapy for the past 33 years. Last year Sue sold Mt. Eliza Beauty to Suzie Phillips & Lisa Lazarotto, who have both worked for her for over 20 years and are leading therapists in their own right, “They are taking the business to a newer fresher level,” says Sue. You can find Sue Verheyen and Adelle Simic at 5 Old Mornington Road, in Sue’s business Advanced Skin & Laser. Sue says ”After performing laser & IPL treatments for over 16 years, along with corrective skin treatments, incl. acne, clogging, rosacea & more, this was the right move for me.” Advanced Skin & Laser is open, Monday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday BY APPOINTMENT ONLY. Another summer has passed, and yes it is time again to look at your skin and refresh after the sun has taken its toll, as well as the signs of ‘old’ damage coming through. red veins etc, with little or no downtime, in experienced hands & at an affordable price. Combinations of peeling treatments, from superficial to down time peels, combined with IPL, LED or needling are the way to go forward, and an IPL treatment is the first place to start. Beware, do not be overtreated, you only have one skin. Remember ‘the barnacles’ says Sue, “Milia, Skin Tags, Fibromas, just to name a few have been removed by us for over 20 years, no scar, no downtime, and at very very reasonable cost. Ask us. Bumps on the skin make us feel old and there is no need for them to be there, but remember no matter what we call ourselves, Doctors are the only people allowed to diagnose a spot or bump. If in doubt, it must be checked out.” Well with this in mind, remember chest, neck and hands require assistance also. Moisturise every day, every second day with a AHA or BHA to lift dead cells and lactic body moisturizer each other day to assist in the retention of moisture, and of course, have IPL to remove the obvious signs of neglect over the years.

Sue Verheyen, whilst overseas recently, looked into a study by a leading manufacturer of muscle relaxant injectables and facial fillers which shows there is a distinct move towards a subtler, less dramatic approach to looking younger. Apart from the problem of cheaper products coming into the country which do not seem to last as long, and in some cases not even ‘approved’, ask for what product exactly is being used. You have the right. “It is time for consumers to understand what is being used, as advertising only allows us to use the words Muscle Relaxant or Facial Fillers which are not necessarily the tried and proven Botox and other leading company brands we are all know and trust. Check the experience of your injector and qualifications, as we all deserve an outstanding outcome. Read our next issue, later this year for some insight into Skin Education and product ingredient advice.” Phone 9787 7475 for an appointment with Sue or Adelle. We look forward to seeing you. Ward update with

Andrew Dixon

Although this council might be nearing its end, there’s no sign of things slowing down! In Mount Eliza alone we’ve seen the erection of heritage information signs throughout the Ranelagh estate, a rotunda erected in Rotary Park, construction begin on the crucial footpath for Wooralla Drive, new roundabouts and other roadworks on Mt Eliza Way, I could take up this whole column just listing them. We’ve also prepared the draft budget for release, so you’ll be able to browse the massive document in the coming weeks. The belt has been tightened considerably following the adoption of the state government’s “Fairer Go” rating system, which essentially imposes a limit to our rate

increase of the current inflation rate – 2.5% for this financial year, down from last year’s rate increase of more than 5%. Council will be seeking comments on new initiatives such as the abolition of the municipal charge and the adoption of a waste services charge, and there’ll be a Section 223 committee hearing where residents and ratepayers can make formal submissions, so keep an eye out! Up in Briars Ward, there’s been a reduction in capital expenditure when compared with other wards as a result of council receiving fewer grants from state and federal government for the Black Spot program, as well as Roads to Recovery. This means there will be fewer road projects over the course of the year, as the “low-hanging fruit” has been well and truly picked, but there’s still many other exciting capital projects to come. As the new rotunda in Rotary Park nears completion, be sure to thank your local service clubs – in this instance, the Rotary Club of Mount Eliza

– because they contribute a phenomenal amount to smaller community-based projects often overlooked or unable to be fully funded by council. Wooralla Drive and Mount Eliza Way will be the site of significant reconstruction projects over the next financial year, with the shoulders to be sealed and formal car parking bays installed on Mount Eliza Way, as well as two roundabouts and of course, the footpath, on Wooralla Drive. Both pedestrians and motorists will need to take care in these areas, particularly on the steep slopes of Wooralla Drive, where there’s no alternative for pedestrians but to walk on the road in many cases. Stay safe and enjoy these upgrades and capital works as they’re completed. If you have any ideas or questions for the future, contact your ward councillors at briarsward@ mornpen.vic.gov.au – we’re always excited to hear from you.

WTF it’s the Singing postie’

warming hearts and setting Facebook alight BY ANDREA KELLETT

Mt Eliza locals have used social media to identify a joyful Australia Post employee dubbed the ‘singing postie’. Mt Martha’s Robin Wood, 56, has been singing his way around his postal route for the past 10 years and the man with the big voice is delivering much more than mail – he’s making locals smile. It’s a human touch that has been the domain of nature strip chatter for years, until it struck a chord on Facebook. It started with this post: “Went for a walk and was sitting in my car when I heard someone singing “we will sing in the sunshine” really well and really loud. It was the local postie! Just idling along singing for the joy of it! Magic moment. Thanks Mr Mt Eliza postie with the grey beard. You made my day.” Then, one of the 4447 members of Facebook group WTF Mt Eliza got wind of it and the town was talking. Within a few posts the loyal employee, who’s been doing the job for 30 years, had been named and stories of his joyfulness were flowing in: “Don’t you love him. He especially sings louder when the dogs bark at him,” one posted. “I love our singing postie. Makes me

26

smile every time,” another said. And this: “Definitely Postie Rob. An absolute golden gem for Australia Post. The kids have all grown up with him delivering our mail. Yes, they used to ALL get rubber bands. My dog loves him more. Always makes my day when I get to chat, wave or even toot the car horn to say G’day.” Mornington Peninsula Magazine (our sister mag) tracked him down and asked the father of two (Rhainsley and Jamieson) if the talk was true. “Yes, I’ve been singing for my own enjoyment for 10 years or so,” he said. “I sing on my postie round to cheer up people because over the time I’m seeing more and more stress and if I can make people smile then I’ve done a good deed for the day.” It turns out he is from a musical family and rumours he introduces himself as Robin the Hood are true. “It gets a smile which is the aim of the game,” he said. Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra and Louis Armstrong are his personal favourites and he’s had his fair share of requests. Perhaps the last word, however, should be left to the fan who posted this: “Should we report him to his superiors for being awesome?” Ph: 9708 8222

60 Mount Eliza Way 9787 2953 www.manyunggallery.com.au staff@manyunggallery.com.au

48 years and Manyung is moving! The marvellous Manyung Gallery has been located in the old castle building on Nepean Highway, Mount Eliza since 1968. For almost a half century this haven for the creative has been a key contributor to the art community. Local, interstate and overseas visitors have flocked to the site where multiple art careers have been launched and thousands of paintings and sculptures have changed hands. Owners David and Sharyn Wemyss-Smith explain. ‘High rent and occupancy costs have made the site no longer viable. It’s a shame to leave such an iconic art environment, but we need to remain a viable art business.’ A new Manyung will be launched at 60 Mount Eliza Way, Mt Eliza in early May to continue the brand’s presence in Mount Eliza. This site and the other Manyung Galleries located in Sorrento and Malvern, will be supported by a centrally located ‘Art Warehouse’ being established in Mornington. ‘Manyung Gallery will remain at the forefront of presenting affordable, high quality Australian artworks and sculpture’, continues David. The group will be setting up Pop Up galleries in targeted suburbs of Melbourne and will continue its consolidation in Singapore with participation in its 9th Exhibition in April. The mobile gallery service will operate from 60 Mount Eliza Way, Mt Eliza 3930. Come one, come all.

President Dr Don Reeves said the Mount Eliza Men’s Shed intended to work with other groups to provide a range of opportunities for social interaction including gardening, playing chess, working with computers and more. The Shed is auspiced by Mount Eliza Neighbourhood House and supported by local Rotary and Lions clubs, the Mt Eliza Community Bank and Ritchies IGA. AFTER Modern Dentistry has many options to tackle the appearance of your smile. Correct understanding of the issues/impediments is essential! there is nothing more disappointing than a result less than the expectation.

call US TODaY. 9787 4439 viSiT US. 126 Mount Eliza Way Caring for our Community for over 20 years

with Dr Scott Robertson @ Dental Care Mt Eliza I find patients present to me often asking me for “brand named” dentistry such as Allon4, Lumineers or Invisalign. People now have access to so much information, available on the internet, or have heard of dental treatments from some pretty slick marketing campaigns, so often brand names are what patients come in asking for – which of course is the intention of the product sellers. Whilst these branded treatments may in themselves be very good. I believe my job as a professional and as a dentist in the community for over 25 years, is to help unravel the often confusing and sometimes “inappropriate” options that our patients come in asking for. My responsibility is to diagnose the problem and obtain an understanding of the outcome required and match the options available to the desires of the patient. Balancing the treatment choices with the individual and appropriateness for their care is one of the most satisfying parts of my Job. Carrying out planned treatments smoothly and comfortably and seeing the appreciative smile from a patient confirms to me that our dental care is well done! Often my patients are relieved to find the best choice for them is not the most expensive or dramatic! With common sense, our skills and experience, attention to detail, and using our expert dental knowledge, your dental experience doesn’t need to be daunting. We do beautiful Veneers, non extraction Orthodontics for children and adults, Implants, Simple and Advanced Dental options from family dentistry to full mouth rehabilitations – with a Smile! If you are interested in a solution to your dental problems, be it Aesthetic or Functional, or just an overall view of where to from here for your mouth? – Please contact us so we can make your problem a solution!

Chamber of Commerce chat!

NBN rolls into town BY ANDREA KELLETT

Connection, or lack of it, has become something of a buzzword in Mt Eliza, particularly when it comes to mobile phone coverage and the rollout of the National Broadband Network. Politicians say fast and reliable internet access is on its way, if not already switched on.

Mt Eliza Village continues to evolve and develop with continuous investment. There’s been the opening of a new Real Estate agent office, a new look and name for The Melt Room Café, new owners and branding for the Fish and Chip shop, plus a different premises and fresh branding for the former Safeway Pharmacy! And the big news - Manyung Gallery is now in the village, opposite the Post Office. Following on from the success of the first Mt Eliza Music Festival, planning is underway for a follow up on the first Saturday in February 2017. The Chamber of Commerce would like to thank all the community who turned out in large numbers to enjoy the day. It was great to see locals and friends dotted around the Village Green stage, sitting on the footpath enjoying the buskers and spilling out of packed venues. The Village was absolutely flourishing with melody and laughter from people who were enjoying the live music.

Straight teeth and a great smile have the ability your impact your social life, career and your self confidence. What better time to than Springtime to take your first step towards feeling better about yourself? “Orthodontics and Sports” It’s springtime and again time to remind our patients at Hanks Orthodontics to protect their faces and teeth while playing sports. If

you are participating in sports, it’s important to have a proper-fitting mouth guard. Mouth guards can prevent chipped or broken teeth, lip and cheek injuries. If you are wearing fixed appliances, please remember DO NOT use a regular mouth guard or mouth guards that are softened in warm water and moulded to the teeth). Dr. Hanks recommends using a mouth guard that is fixed braces friendly, which it should say it on the box, or you can buy one from our office. Having a mouth guard can make the difference between losing your teeth or not, and because many of our patients who play high school sports have jaws that are still growing, last year’s mouth guard may no longer fit as it should. Please feel free to ask Dr. Hanks and his staff any questions you have regarding mouth guards. Enjoy the sports and Springtime! Regards Dr. Paul Hanks and everyone at Team Hanks Orthodontics. Healthy Smiles on bruxism and decay Healthy Smiles in Mt Eliza is a family owned and operated business that believes in preventative dentistry rather than a cure based philosophy. Healthy Smiles Dental Surgery goes to the direct cause of poor oral health. Dr Petunia Jacob believes it is important that clients become aware of Bruxism (tooth clenching, molar gnashing or jaw pain from grinding) which is causing severe dental distress. As a result of this stress related condition, patients present with flattening of the tooth edges, pain in the jaw or ear, cracked and over sensitive teeth and stiffness of the jaw while chewing (especially at breakfast time). Bruxism is also linked to gum damage and tooth loss because of pressure on the teeth while grinding often being far greater than the normal chewing process. Dr Petunia Jacob knows how important bi-annual dental checks are in helping maintain optimum oral health and preventing serious

Working in conjunction with NBN Co (our network provider and wholesaler) and their national roll out of the fibre broadband network, Infinity Broadband delivers affordable, world class service and support to residential customers throughout Australia.

To infinity and then beyond Director of Infinity Broadband Jo O’Reilly knew it was time for a change when she served up the dog’s dinner (albeit pet mince, rice and veggies) to her equally exhausted husband. The two of them were working as paramedics, trying to negotiate a newborn’s sleep patterns, or rather lack of, and wondering how they were ever going to make it through the next day. That’s when Jo’s brother came to her with the idea of starting up an internet company and the rest as we say is history. Infinity Broadband has been connecting residents to the ‘rolling out’ NBN for three years and continues to develop as a Retail Service Provider for the National Broadband Network. T he true advantage of this small local provider is that they know their customers by name and offer a personal approach that larger companies don’t. Jo has lived on the Peninsula for ten years and loves keeping abreast of everything the internet has to offer while connecting with a wide range of creative Peninsula businesses.

Melt in your mouth delights Everyone loves a good toastie and with that in mind Katie has rebranded her Mt Eliza café to the Mt Eliza Melt Room, allowing her to focus on what she does best – making delicious toasted sandwiches. It’s a move towards simplicity, distinction and perfection. “The Mt Eliza Melt Room is all about great toasted sandwiches, home-made soup, cold pressed juices, smoothies and really good coffee,” she explains. “I wanted to specialise in something that noone’s really doing and everyone loves a good toastie.”

Corner’s calling, and it’s all good! Are you looking for a local hang out that you don’t have to go into the village to find? And what about a chilled out space that combines California cool with Mt Eliza style? Done! Welcome to The Corner Pantry in Mt Eliza where Garrett Dickinson and fiancé Novi-Jae McDougall have blended California fusion food with Australian flavours. This little ripper of a cafe is a throw-back to the old fashioned corner store where you could grab some lollies (there are glass jars full of sweets inside), chow down on a sandwich and enjoy an awesome coffee. The Corner Pantry serves up a great brew from Commonfolk and you can even buy a bottle of milk to take home! TheVillageMtElizaMagazine

Garrett is a Californian native who was brought up in his grandfather’s kitchen so food is his blood. Novi-Jae is Mornington Peninsula bred and has shown Garrett the Peninsula style. Now Mt Eliza locals, their love of all things Californian and Peninsula has resulted in some great tasty eats. There are teenagers stopping by for milkshakes after school and reggae grooving in the background and outdoor lounging is encouraged. Friday night tapas are now a happening thing and there is a great outdoor space, with activities the little ones can enjoy. Woodleigh School – Leading the Way RIGHT ACROSS OUR THREE CAMPUSES, Woodleigh School is deeply engaged in the continued development of our learning programs. Our collaborative research projects with Harvard University, the University of Melbourne and Claire Warden’s Nature Pedagogy network each give Woodleigh a key role in developing action based enquiries into existing programs, as well as informing updates and opportunities to develop new programs for the future. By reaching out and broadening our network Woodleigh is able to draw on the ideas and experiences of others, and importantly, have a platform to share our model and its

various successes, both in Australia and internationally via the Round Square Schools Network. Through these collaborative projects we consistently find that Woodleigh School’s teaching and learning programs, and our approach to learning environment design are widely regarded as at the leading edge of educational thinking. Most important however are the consistent findings that our methods and environments are highly successful in achieving the outcomes all contemporary educationalists strive to achieve: a strong academic foundation for the future, and the development of lifelong learning skills which prepare students well for their futures. Time and time again we see that the Ph: 9708 8222

authenticity of our learning, and the fact that we are able to engage our students in real, lived learning experiences, is the driver of this success. The research continues to promote the theory that it is programs which encourage students to engage directly with the world that best prepare students for futures that are unpredictable and unknown – to adapt, and develop the skills to respond accordingly. As the educational sector struggles to find the best way to evolve to meet the rapidly changing learning needs of our students, it is good to know that the Woodleigh model of student-centred, experience-driven schooling is increasingly referred to as a reference point for others.
