CHILD & ADOLESCENT MENTAL HEALTH CENTRE INTRODUCTION

India is home to the fastest growing population with largest number of child population. India has the largest adolescent population in the world, 253 million, and every fifth person is between 10 to 19 years. India stands to benefit socially, politically and economically if this large number of adolescents are safe, healthy, educated and equipped with information and life skills to support the country’s continued development.. About onefifth of India’s population is adolescents (Population Council & UNICEF, 2013). In kerala 1 in 5 adolescent is diagnosed with mental disorders. The need for mental health consultation for this age group is rising. Kerala has scarce amount of institutes for mental related treatment for children. There is need for child specific mental health centres to diagnose and treat children.

AIM

This thesis will aim to redesign the infrastructure of ‘Child psychiatry Departments’ to make them more humanised and habitable ,at the same time attempling to reintegrate the infrastructure into society.

OBJECTIVES

To study the evolution of hospital infrastructure in India and the establishment of Mental Health Care Act 2017.

Understand the present working of child and adolescent mental hospitals and deriving user sets from the same.

Identifying spatial triggers for mental health patients using the aid of neuro-architecture.

Designing an infrastructure which supports community interaction and educational spaces for better incorporation of the children and adolescents into a more urban setting and patient integration into the society.

VISION

This project will aim to be a benchmark in designing mental institutes in India, covering major necessilies of mental health care for child and adolescent under one umbrella, on the same site. An institute which caters solely to mental well-being of children. A step towards decreasing and hopefully, eliminating the stigma surrounding mental health. Making people see Child mental health centres in the same light as general hospitals and making them as approachable as possible.

“The current trends to show us that almost half of the patients continue to vegetate in a dehumanized manner within the hospital as relatives often do not want to take patients home. There are many long-stay patients who are being abandoned by their families in the mental hospitals. Mental hospitals serve as dumping ground which is convenient for relatives of unwanted mentally ill palients. There is also an uneven distribution of the available psychiatric services. Vast sections of the population and large geographical areas in many states lack even rudimentary mental health caro. There is a need for rebuilding and revamping the existing infrastructure in these hospitals. The mental hospital of the past needs to be converted to a state-ofthe-art tertiary psychiatry centre with various subspecialty psychiatry clinics being available for the use of the common man”.

The appearance of s unfinished also provides a natural touch. Dynamic and diffuse light patterns can provide a positive psychological response when stimulating the eyes. The vertical lighting of the skylights and ceiling provides a visually soothing effect. Void in the middle of the room as natural lighting and air circulation.Narrowing of the building is also the provision of a roster in the room in applying cross ventilation Biomorphic forms and patterns can be provided from the facade of the building that uses double skin in the form of a wooden lattice that gives a visual effect like a tree A room with good refuge conditions will provide a sense of security and be away from noise sources so that patients can rest or heal. In this case, use the gazebo as a refuge at the Mental Health Center. Space that has good prospects is that it feels open and free. To provide a space for the user to visually monitor the surrounding environment from a high position to increase prospects. A Green wall can be provided which is a filter for the environment, which removes glare and dust, keeps the room cool, and can reduce noise Placing plants in buildings that use potted media or directly to the ground and the presence of small rocks produce a very natural, distinctive aroma. Mental health conditions in children are diagnosed and treated based on signs and symptoms and how the condition affects a child’s daily life. To make a diagnosis, your child’s health care provider might recommend that your child be evaluated by a specialist, such as a psychiatrist, psychologist, clinical social worker, psychiatric nurse or other mental health care professional. The evaluation might include: USER GROUP STUDY AND RESEARCH USERGROUP & AGE CHILDREN 0- 13 YRS 1.Anxiety disorders. 2.Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disor der (ADHD). 3.Eating disorders. 4.Depression and other mood disorders. 5.Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) 6.Schizophrenia 1.Anxiety disorders. 2.Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disor der (ADHD). 3.Eating disorders. 4.Depression and other mood disorders. 5.Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) 6.Schizophrenia 7.
