DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE Our milestone Sesquicentennial Celebration is in full effect as your Morgan State University turns 150 years old. As we look back over these past years, we are so blessed and have so much for which to be thankful. We can relish in Morgan’s rich history, its positive stance in the community, its overwhelming growth and, most important, its ability to provide a first-class education, graduating some of the most intelligent, successful, professional and astute alumni you will ever find across this country and around the world. What a history! The festivities began on Dec. 11, 2016 with a Worship Service with the theme “Celebrating Our Spiritual Heritage and Foundation: Thou Who Hast Brought Us Thus Far on the Way,” at the Sharp Street Memorial United Methodist Church, where it all began. After the church service, there was the Sesquicentennial Christmas Concert. On Friday, Dec. 16, 2016, the celebration continued with our Sesquicentennial Winter Commencement Exercises, as we continued to make history when we conferred a degree on Joseph L. Jones, a computer science major, our 50,000th graduate. There are many more activities planned for this year, and it is my hope that you will make every effort to attend as many as possible. Please visit our website at 150.morgan.edu for other events. Even though we have survived for 150 years, Morgan, as well as the other HBCUs in the state of Maryland, are still in the struggle. As the remedy phase of

Today, he is President of the Cryor Group, LLC, a business development and strategic resource company, and is widely recognized for his ability to facilitate large complex agreements in the public and private sectors. His work has benefitted some of the largest corporations and most prestigious public sector organizations in the world. After the unrest in Baltimore in 2015, he was appointed Chair of OneBaltimore by then-Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, to address multigenerational and systemic barriers that have plagued Baltimore and many other cities throughout the U.S. Cryor is a frequent advisor to President Wilson and members of the Board of Regents on a range of issues. He has arranged for large private sector companies to make significant contributions to the MSU Foundation. In addition, he has arranged for other corporate partners to provide apprenticeships, host collaborative forums and advance the University as a source of professional and student talent. Cryor makes financial contributions to the University and attends University events on a regular basis. He and his wife, Erica, of Morgan’s Class of 1969, are Life Members of the MSU Alumni Association, members of the Howard L. Cornish Metropolitan Baltimore Alumni Chapter and maintain two endowed scholarship funds to which they contribute every year. They are the proud parents of one daughter, Maisha Cryor, Esq., and a son-in-law, Curtis Hardrick, and they have three grandsons. The Cryor Group is a regular sponsor of Morgan’s annual golf tournament, and Michael and Erica secure additional corporate funding for that event and the annual MSU Gala. They also contribute clothing to the Alumni Career Closet for student interviews and job searches. the Coalition for Equity and Excellence in Higher Education v. the State of Maryland case has just been completed, we are hoping that Judge Catherine Blake will rule in our favor to provide appropriate funding and other needed resources so our institutions will be able to enhance their missions, establish non-duplicative, unique, high-demand programs that will enable them to attract more students of all races. The state has repeatedly failed to do its part, thereby putting the four universities in jeopardy of steadily losing their competitiveness and attractiveness in the higher education marketplace. I impress upon you the need to be forever vigilant in our efforts to protect our beloved Morgan State University. Another one of our celebratory events will take place on Friday, May 19 at our Sesquicentennial 77th Annual Alumni Awards and Class Reunion Luncheon. Special recognition will be given to those classes ending in “2” and “7,” 1947– 2012. The “Soulful Centennials,” Class of 1967, will celebrate its 50th Anniversary. They have been busy planning and executing a number of events in support of their adoptive Class, the Class of 2017. This class, no doubt, is on the move! We look forward to seeing you on May 19. In the spirit of this hallmark Sesquicentennial Celebration, we salute you, our “Fair Morgan.” May you forever stand!! Sincerely, Joyce A. Chapters of the Year The selection of the chapter to receive top honors this year on Alumni Day resulted in a tie. The MSU Alumni Association congratulates both outstanding organizations below for their well-deserved recognition!

Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Area Alumni Chapter The Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Area Alumni Chapter is actively realizing the dream of the small group of Morgan graduates who formed the chapter in

Dinner and the Nifty Class of Fifty Holiday Lunch. The chapter received the MSU Admissions Office Award in 2016, for the fourth consecutive year. The chapter is very well represented in the national leadership of MSUAA. Among its members in high office are the Rev. Dr. Rev Charles D. Fletcher, Jr., MSUAA President; Wilhelmina Frieson, 2017–2019 Chair, MSUAA Board of Directors Elections; and Dr. Charles Baylor, 2017–2019 member, MSUAA Board of Directors Elections. With 34 members, most of whom are seniors, the Delaware Alumni Chapter has named itself “The Little Engine That Could,” never saying what its members can’t do or, “It’s too hard.” They never say, “I think I can.” They always say, “I know I can.” Through it all, this messaging has enabled their small membership to handle large challenges.

1949, to support the University, its programs and its students. The chapter began the year by continuing its work for the constructive resolution of matters relating to the governance of the University and its trajectory of continued growth and development. Toward this end, chapter members journeyed to the Maryland state capital to demonstrate their commitment to their alma mater and to rally elected officials to their cause. Chapter members also contributed time to Morgan by supporting the Athletic Department through the Adopt-A-Game Program, participating in the Mentoring Program of Morgan’s Office of Student Success and Retention, representing the University at the Fourth Biennial USA Science and Engineering Festival Expo in D.C., and other ways. The chapter and its members also provided generous financial assistance to the University and its students. Many contributed toward fulfillment of their Life Member Challenge pledge of $500 during the next five years. The chapter’s 33rd Anniversary Scholarship Crab Feast was attended by more than 650 people and netted nearly $14,000 for the Chapter’s Vestah Blye Scholarship Program, to support current and future students from the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. Endowed Scholarship Fund in 2016. Separately, the chapter held three fundraisers and awarded $6,500 in scholarships to nine Morgan students residing in Delaware. Through its fundraising activities, the chapter has awarded more than $50,000 to students attending MSU. Realizing the importance of membership dues revenue to MSU Alumni Association (MSUAA) and chapter activities, the chapter is working toward a goal of 100 percent membership participation for paying local and national dues. In support of Morgan, chapter members participated in numerous Morgan-related activities, among them: Explore Morgan Day, the MEAC Basketball Tournament, the Washington, D.C. Chapter’s Scholarship Crab Feast, the South Jersey Alumni Chapter Line Dancing event, the Philadelphia Chapter Holiday
