Outline of the Dulais Valley See Appendix x

The Dulais Valley is situated north of Neath and is within the catchment area of Neath Port Talbot County Council. The area connects Swansea and Neath, to Brecon. The area is traversed by the River Dulais. The valley features many former mining villages such as Onllwyn, with Creunant being the earliest to be inhabited. During the Miner’s Strike in 1984-5, the area was notably aided by a London group; Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners. This was recently turned into a film in 2014 called Pride.

The area of Creunant, meaning the creation of a stream, is the nearest settlement to the Cefn Coed Colliery. However, there is a notable disconnect between the two locations and this was overcome in the mining age with a commuter rail. However, from the Beeching Cuts in 1963 saw this line become solely a mineral railway. There is now new attention brought to this line due to the Global Centre for Rail Excellence at Onllwyn at the top of the Valley. This is a state of the art, electric train testing facility.

Cefn Coed Colliery was the worlds deepest Anthracite Colliery which helped create steel and iron. In later life, after the coal industry’s nationalisation, the colliery transformed into a state-of-the-art steam coal colliery named Blaenant Drift Colliery. This had a diagonal shaft, yielding shallower coal used in the process of coal-fired power-stations. This while also being transformed into a museum in 1978. After the shift away from coal in the 1980s, the colliery was closed in 1990 and

the rest of the land was taken over by the Welsh Government.

The present day-museum is currently closed due to safety concerns and operating on a small budget. The key remaining structures on the site have obtained GradeII/II* listing statuses from CADW and the Head frames have been recently restored *Site Visit Images (Taylor 2022) by the Welsh Government.

Developing the idea of Energy and the Emotional Response to the site, the principal conservation agenda will be to bolster the existing historic built environment on the site through massing and masterplaning, to account to the vision of elevating the existing.

This will see the connectivity of the past site celebrated and new additions will be used to add user focus on all aspects and actively attempt to bring more attention to the aspects of than the monuments of the site. This will be reinforced with the exploration of a user journey through the site and exhibitions alike.

This was then future highlighted with a second model continuing the theme of connection and scale, and illustrating the importance of the unseen scale and monumentality of the mine workings in regard to their depth and Map reach.

The initial attention was given to the obsession of the monumental relics of the colliery’s former life. This was conveyed in a model conveying the general consensus that these monuments are seen to be holding up the future and history of the site but actually, deeply illustrates the contrary and how all the elements work together to secure the collective history and memory of the site. All portraying the interconnected nature of the site.

This shifted focus on mobility and bringing more people to the site and thus conserving the future of the site.

Manifesto From the rich history of the site within Energy and the context of the Dulais Valley, it is important to continue this legacy of Energy and through the medium of celebration and education. The experience of the site has highlighted the foci on the monumental aspects of the site and how this is detrimental as it de tracts attention from the equally important built environment and industrial artefacts and machinery. The understanding of this symbiotic relationship with the existing on the site, highlights how the future vision should work with this and elevate this relationship.

In an attempt to accomplish this, the vision for the site is to bolster the museum’s stature by reorganising the current museum aspect as a National Museum for Energy.

This new focus will not only strengthen the legacy of the coal industry in these parts of the valleys but educate in the sustainable future of energy and how everyone can play their roles in making the world a more low-carbon, and sustainable place to live. This will transform the legacy of the site to still retain an energy-related impact on its contact, while setting out a mobility masterplan, to widen the scale of impact. This in turn will connect wit the site’s past wide-ranging scale of impact and the conservation theory of accessibility of heritage.

National Energy Museum Amgueddfa Ynni Cymru By reorganising the structure of the museum to gain national recognition, under the Amgueddfa Cymru organisation, this will raise the publicity and potentially funding for the running of the site.

In South Wales, the coal industrial museum scene is relatively saturated with Big Pit being the dominant experience and others outside of the realm of Amgueddfa Cymru, with the likes of Rhondda Heritage. As a result, this detracts from the potential for investment at Cefn Coed. Even though the site is one of the last remaining Anthracite Collieries and has a unique heritage offering, by re-branding and focusing on Energy/ Ynni, this brings a contemporary perspective and a unique selling point to attract new visitors.

The past industrial use of the site encouraged a circular energy process where energy was intertwined to help the function of the Colliery but also was retained where possible for efficiency.

The way that methane was reused in the system in lieu of coal, for powering the boilers and how water was also, gained from the mine and retained and used on-site, all convey ideologies which can be integrated into the energy museum.

Energy Connections

Energy transfer through and around the site, adds connections between buildings and uses in a very physical way. Some of these can be seen today with pipes and remnants of old pipe through fabrics.

These connections can be reinstated and highlighted to connect to the past and celebrate the interconnectivity of the existing and the past.

National Energy Museum - Phase 01

The language sees the Industrial present and future exhibitions layered as impermanent lightweight due to their malleability and flexible / unwritten and ever-changing nature, and they are overhanging the Boiler House to symbolise the reliance on the past and its importance. The event space uses the permanent heavy mass language to convey a difference with exhibitions and the permanent connection with the community with local exhibitions and venue opportunities.

Architectural Form and Layout

The form sees the layering mass to be above the existing winding house complex to gain views to the village from the top energy future exhibition and give good amount of space to the Boilers.

The central core is opened as an atrium, celebrating the route to the future. The layout internally enables the building to act as the temporary entrance to the museum and completes the current museum experience of industrial past.

The large open atrium for circulation supports the aspiration for the central space in the complex and the visibility of the diagrid on the exterior in elation to the more linear facade works to convey a separation in the architectural styles used. The frosted glazing works aesthetically but the opening lights do stand out in the overall composition of fenestrations.
