THE SOLARIUM

CO-DIVIDUAL HOUSING

LOS ANGELES, CA

The Solarium is a prototypical co-housing project intended for the larger Los Angeles area. Its unique location in Southern California provides an ideal climate to engage the outdoors, and thus all residential units connect directly to greenspace. Common areas, including courtyards, gardens, and shared terraces encourage social interaction and provide a semi-private buffer between individual rooms and public spaces. This crucial design choice affirms the occupant’s sense of individuality within the collective whole by providing layers of privacy. The seamless blending of indoor and outdoor living also fosters a strong bond between them and their environment, providing ample natural light. In addition to its residential programming, the building includes a rooftop cultivation space and farm-to-table café. The entire collective is united within a gridded façade of hydroponic growing systems in the form of a “juvenile home,” reminiscent of Oswald Mathias Ungers’ Solar House. Base-geometry inspired by Italian Renaissance Architect, Andrea Palladio’s Villa Rotunda.

Porosity is also a key design principle, and thresholds provide a gradient of opacity ranging from solid walls, to breezeblock dividers, to operable screens. The unit types accommodate a sampling of solitary residents, to couples, to families, all with ADA options. These units are oriented with the intention of providing communal areas between a diversity of demographics, whether it be age, socioeconomic status, or otherwise. By reimagining the relationship between architecture, community, and the environment, The Solarium aspires to redefine housing typologies for a more interconnected and sustainable future.

THE GALVESTON INTERNATIONAL JUNETEENTH MUSEUM

JUNETEENTH EXHIBIT IN GALVESTON, TX

FEATURED IN THE “NEW WORLD BUILDING” EXHIBIT AT PRAIRIE VIEW A&M UNIVERSITY

REUNION: The act of being brought together or the instance of two or more people together again.

The museum consists of 3 floors; the ground level is primarily used for parking; this level also elevates the building to adhere to the 500-year floodplain regulations. Multiple structural walls, each uniquely shaped, will define the interior spaces and represent Juneteenth’s “Reunion” aspect. Strong curvature and parametric elements convey the visual of “uniting” in plan, elevation, and throughout the interior. Overall, enhancing the full cultural experience in the museum.

Juneteenth was recently deemed an official government holiday. It was created to commemorate the emancipation of enslaved individuals in the United States. Even though the Emancipation Proclamation was passed on January 1, 1863, by Abraham Lincoln, enslaved people were only notified two years later, on June 19, 1865, in Galveston, TX. Juneteenth is a catalyst for so many integral entities in the black community today, Prairie View A&M being one of them. Being a student at an HBCU, paired with the experience I had during my visits to Galveston and the information I have learned from my mother and family, I am aware of the great depths this day has in our community. I will convey the themes of perseverance, strength, resilience, survival, and liberation. These themes indeed emphasize Juneteenth’s purpose as an essential holiday worth celebrating.

HIGH-RISE DEVELOPMENT

MEMORIAL CITY, HOUSTON, TX

Our highrise design, located in the Houston, TX Memorial City Center complex, is built to connect corporate spaces to nature and connect the occupants. Using health and wellness to drive our building’s further purpose, we concentrated on promoting a healthy work-life balance. Our 62-story building stands 870’ tall and includes commercial and office spaces with varying occupancy standards. We also included health-oriented areas such as flex working floors and a wellness center for the occupants. We created two coves flowing up the building, pulling in the natural environment and creating conversation spaces from floor to floor.

Surrounding Commercial Spaces, determine the tower’s commercial services to cater to the local demographic. The site is also near HWY-I10 and Beltway 8.

The Surrounding Residential , Mixed Use, and Apartment buildings are analyzed to gauge the immediate household types in proximity to the tower.

The tower’s orientation is based on the Winter and Summer Sun Paths and the SE Prevailing Winds. Surrounding vegetation is limited to private lots, our site will serve as a community park.

The form progressively twists, rotating 90 degrees clockwise from the base to the top.

The form mimics a stretching motion, perpetuating the active-forward purpose of the building.

The tower’s facade and twisting form creates a fluid movement, it is dance-like, hence it’s name.
