S. GAY STREET WASTE FACILITY 01.

Fall 2021 | Arch 373 | Marshall Prado Project Details: University of Tennessee Knoxville Location: S. Gay Street Knoxville, TN

This project is a Multifunctional Building that investigates the effects of environmental factors such as thermal gain and solar radiation on to the built environment. The program is comprised of a Waste Treatment Facility and various other programs such as housing and commercial space. This location is placed in a historic zone meaning it had a 45ft height limit. Building almost entirely on top of other buildings it was important to me to implement underutilized and underperforming spaces into my design to fit all my program in this space while not encroaching on the historic zone. Investigating the site with a varying number of environmental and socioeconomic criteria began to map the placement of programs on to quantitative scale such as distances to bus stops or views to the mountains. From this parametric analysis a series of solar and thermal criteria shaped the envelope.

AIRIE ARTIST MUSUEM Spring 2021 | Arch 272 | Kathy Wheeler Project Details: University of Tennessee Knoxville Location: Miami, Florida

The AIRIE Artist Musuem located in Coconut Grove outside of Miami, Florida houses Miami’s Artist in Residency. The project is an infill site which looks to combine the enviromental aspects of the Everglades in a much urban enviroment as Miami.

This mixture of nature and urban fabric is mimicked in the building through the varing stages of solid and light. The building includes housing for the studying artist intergrated in the musuem, but also has access to their own personal rooftop space.

Much like Miami building styles, the rooftop is important to the culture of night life in the building. Integrating a rooftop bar was important to the utilization of all spaces and fundraising for the cooperation.

The Shark Valley Visitor’s Center is the entrance to the Shark Valley Loop climaxing at a lookout tower exposing my site located on a vast sawgrass prarie.

Utilizing the dense plot already built upon and not encrotching on anymore wildlife was important to the ethics of the project. By researching similar climatic precendent and creating various diagrams capturing the envelope and interiority of the structure, the project began to zone itself and morphe into the tight site. The precedent also displayed various climatic techinques which developed into the scheme of the building.

CONCENTRATION OF SINKHOLES IN FLORIDA

D

In a Geological application, the state of Florida is built upon large concentrations of Oolitic Limestone. This rock allows for underground weathering to carve out the underside of Florida. By tracking the concentration of sinkholes in Florida and finding the majority are in West Central Florida, I was able to link the massing of sinkholes to its underground aquifer systems. Weak links in the aquifer systems such as thinly confided or unconfined aquifers allow breaks in these underground water supplies. This taints the water supply for many artisan wells and more importantly is sent down stream into Southern Florida and eventually finds its way to the Everglades via the state’s extensive river systems.

MCCLUNG ART MUSEUM Fall 2020 | Arch 271 | Brian Ambroziak Project Details: University of Tennessee Knoxville Location: Knoxville, TN

The McClung Museum located in Circle Park is an unsung treasure on the University of Tennessee Knoxville Campus. The lack of traffic and need for a home for UT’s perminant art collection which is currently sitting in storage. This building would become a hub for campus life by brining in a cafe on the Southwest side of campus.

It also brings a beacon to circle park allowing for a feeling of safety and comfort.

The implementation of site, program, and metaphor as methods of analysis was important to the form find exercise. This exercise took from key locations around campus that have high impacts on the site. The currents of campas and views to specific locations such as Aries Hall are highlighted in the hidden curves of the building.

SUPER-OBJECT Spring 2020 | Arch 172 | Mark Stanley Project Details: University of Tennessee Knoxville Contributors: Jordan Ezzell and Hannah Gracy Location: Knoxville, Tennessee

This project was a deep dive into material exploration and large scale model making. The entirety of the model is 5’x3’x2’ at 1:2 scale in which a digital shell was given to transform into different structural translations. The super object was made with Thermoforming Vaccum molding polystrine to milled mdf forms. There were four modular forms that were used to piece together the whole shell. Each unit was fastened together with rigid control points and then more limber connections were added for flexibilty of the whole object. The overall weight of the object was light due to almost the entirety it being made of out polystirine. Therefore, the object lent itself to be suspended in the air. This allowed for the model to fill itself out instead of collasping which it was prone to due to its lack of a skeleton.

Instead the object takes the role of a skin.

VIETNAM RICE PAVILLION Fall 2019 | Arch 171 | Kyle Shumman Project Details: University of Tennessee Knoxville Location: Yen Bai, Vietnam

The Vietnam Rice Terracing Pavillion looks at a site with a slight slope which included a lookout tower, a living quarters, and workspace for one. The built concrete separations of the pavillion mimick the curvilinear forms of the landscape which the living quarters and work space is carved out of. The program is intened for a local farmer in Vietnam who requires thier work and homelife to be closely related to one another.
