Christmas 2018

As I write this, I have been listening to the recording of a conversation between 4-year old Kaitlyn Wright who lives at Askerswell in Dorset and the South-West Ambulance Service operator who took Kaitlyn’s 999 call. It was a heart-warming conversation taking place in the midst of an emergency.

Kaitlyn’s mum Catherine was suffering from a seizure and seemed to be lapsing in and out of consciousness. During the conversation with the Ambulance service operator, Kaitlyn told her that her mummy was having a fit, “so I need to look after her.” When the operator asked how many fits her mummy had today, wee Kaitlyn counted out 1, 2, 3, and 4. In answer to the operator’s question about how many people were there, Kaitlyn’s reply was “It’s just me, and a dog and a kitten.” We can be critical of our public services at times, but the patience and gentleness of the Ambulance service operator at the other end of the phone that day was exemplary.

I think anyone who heard that conversation would agree it was quite remarkable that a 4-year child could be so clear-headed and so wise in such a situation. Who would think that a wee quine would be the one to save her mummy’s life?

It made me think again of the wonderful events that we Christians celebrate at Christmas. The Prophet Isaiah tells us that the people were living in darkness, in the land of deep darkness. (Isaiah 9:2.) What would the people who first heard the prophecy of Isaiah have made of it? Would their situation have seemed hopeless? This is what the prophet said to the distressed people of that time: “…For to us a child is born, to us a son is given and the government will be upon his shoulders. He will be called Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end.” (Isaiah 9:67.)

The people waited a very long time for this prophecy to be realised, but we live in the generation that knows the prophecy was fulfilled. Luke’s Gospel of Luke tells us how the angel Gabriel went to Mary and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favoured! The Lord is with you.” “Do not be afraid; you have found favour with God. You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom will never end.” (Luke 1:26-33.)

So, Joseph and Mary, his betrothed, went up to Bethlehem to register and while they were there the time came for the child to be born – in a manger in a byre because there was no room in the inn. Angels visited frightened shepherds in a field and assured them that “today in the town of David a Saviour has been born to you he is the Messiah, the Lord.” (Luke 2:10.)

Since then, countless people have put their trust in Jesus, and have found peace in their hearts and in their souls, and through Jesus their lives have been saved for ever and ever. Glory to God in the highest!

REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY There were very full attendances at both the Knockando War Memorial in Archiestown and at the Rothes Parish War Memorial. At Knockando wreaths were laid by the Deputy Lord Lieutenant; also on behalf of Moray Council and on behalf of Archiestown Village Council. Piper Stuart Marr played at the War Memorial at both 6:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. and the Roll was called in Knockando Kirk. Piper Riona Morgan played in the Church.

At Rothes War Memorial wreaths were laid by the Deputy Lord Lieutenant; also on behalf of Moray Council; Rothes Council; Inchberry & District Community Association; Lodge St. John; Rothes Football Club; Rothes Social Club; the Scottish Fire Service and 423 (Speyside) Detached Flight of the Air Training Corps. Members of Elgin City Band played for the Hymns and for the Last Post and Reveille. Flight Sergeant Darren Dunlop ATC marked the beginning and end of the 2-minute silence. Piper Riona Morgan played the Pipes at 6:00 a.m. at Rothes Cemetery and at the War Memorial at 11:30 a.m. and in Rothes Kirk where the Roll was called.

Soup and Bread was served in the Kirk Hall after the service.

BLYTHESWOOD SHOE BOX 25th Year Another record number of boxes were delivered to Blytheswood for onward shipping to the various countries. Between Knockando and Rothes Churches and some from Portknockie a total of 73 boxes were given this year. Thank you to everyone that made up a box, we all know those that receive one are extremely grateful. Each box will bring a smile and tears of joy, as they convey love, and the realisation that someone is thinking of those so less fortunate than ourselves.

Since the Shoe Box appeal started in 1993 there have been 2,189,832 distributed.

HAIRST FESTIVAL Thank you to everyone at both churches for the donation of food and essentials for Moray Food Bank. Sadly, there is still a great need for the foodbank, particularly at this time of year.

SAFEGUARDING REFRESHER TRAINING A Safeguarding Refresher course for Elders and other leaders from both Churches was led by the Presbytery of Moray Safeguarding Officer in Rothes Kirk Hall. Elders are required to undertake regular updates on Safeguarding procedures.

KNOCKANDO, ELCHIES & ARCHIESTOWN KIRK NEWS Sunday Services 10am The Kindness of Strangers Just a little while ago Keith and I had a trip to Aberdeen.

Keith had an appointment at the hospital, and I was looking for something to wear for a function that we were going to. The simple plan was for me to drop Keith at the hospital, and drive back to a garden centre, leave the car, and take the bus into town. When Keith was ready, he would follow into town and give me a bell on the mobile phone. We would then finish any shopping and take the bus back to the garden centre and have a bite to eat, before the drive home.

The first complication was that the bus no longer came as far out as the garden centre, but it was only half a mile to walk to a suitable stop. That much accomplished, I caught the bus into town. I was by this time gasping for a cup of tea, so I went for a quick cup in Debenhams. Just as I was planning the search for the new dress, I had a sudden horrible thought. Shortly before we had reached Aberdeen, I had put the phone on charge, just to make sure it wouldn't run out. Unfortunately, it was still connected to the charger in the car. In times gone by this would have been no problem, as we always had 'backstop arrangements' to meet somewhere, but of course modern technology made this unnecessary! (Quick prayer to the Almighty, please help me out of this mess.)

Have you noticed the rarity of public phone boxes nowadays? I decided to ask another customer if she knew where a phone box might be. She didn't but insisted that I use her mobile. Punching in the number and pressing green didn't work, and she only knew how to phone the numbers already entered. A couple more people came to the rescue, and between the four of us we finally sussed out how to send a message. The kind lady wouldn't accept any payment for the use of her phone, but was glad to be of help.

It was back on the bus, jog/walk back to the car, to be reunited with the phone.

By this time it was windy and very wet, and the phone was so steamed up I could hardly read it, but I sent some kind of message through. Back out to walk more than jog back to the bus. A message came through on the phone, but of course with modern technology, my specks had darkened to protect my eyes from the non-existent sunshine and I couldn't read the message. By now, I could see the bus parked at the terminus, so a bit more jogging. The driver was outside having a quick smoke, and told me to take my time and just go on to the bus, he'd see to the ticket in a moment.

After a wee while, my specks recovered from their dark mood, and I could wipe enough condensation off to see the message, just in time to let Keith know that we were approaching the stop outside the hospital where he was waiting to catch the bus into town.

KNOCKANDO ELCHIES AND ARCHIESTOWN KIRK NEWS Reunited at last, we had a brief foray into town. I quickly found a dress that would meet requirements, and the rest of the day's plans ran without a hitch I was left reflecting on answered prayer, and that the kindness of strangers, just cannot be replaced by technology, especially for people like me who seem to have an uncanny ability get into a muddle with those gadgets which should make our lives easier.

FABRIC COMMITTEE

The Kirk Session at Knockando has established a Committee to look after the fabric of the Church and to formulate plans for routine maintenance and forward planning for the upkeep of the Church building and equipment.

The Committee is convened by Keith North with Sandra Cruickshank, Stanley Johnston, Ian Mackie & Kate Morgan. Keith North will undertake training on PAT testing: offered by the general trustees, and Mike Morgan has been appointed as Health & Safety Officer for the congregation.

MISSION GROUP

Knockando Church has set up a small Mission Group to consider how best the congregation can engage and help in Mission projects locally, nationally and world-wide.

The team comprising Suzanne Foster, Jane Murray-Smith and Jane Hunter will make suggestions and recommendations for congregational prayer and action in a range of situations. Others are welcome to join the Group.

Treasurer’s Report

As we come to the end of another year we are most grateful to all those who have given in Donations and Free Will Offering.

This year is the 25th Anniversary of the new Church and because of the selfless dedication of raising money and of those who have given donations towards this we have commissioned a new stained glass window.

When making a donation or offering anyone who is a taxpayer, if they would like the Church to receive 25% more from Inland Revenue, to fill in a Gift Aid Declaration.

KNOCKANDO ELCHIES AND ARCHIESTOWN KIRK NEWS World Mission News Living Together in a World of Religions Have you ever wondered why we can’t agree with each other, why we have to endure wars?

Western Balkan Countries (Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, Kosovo) The countries of the Western Balkans remain fragile despite advances in democracy and progress being made to stabilise the unrest.

Invisible barriers still remain due to past ethnic cleansing which has led to feelings of distrust and intolerance to those who are ‘different’.

The main religions of Eastern Orthodoxy, Roman Catholicism and Islam have a big influence on politics and culture which in turn shapes the attitudes and way of living of the people.

Croatia Carolyn Boyd – Managing director of ‘Ecumenical Women’s Initiative’ works to try to rebuild post war relations in Croatia. She sees the way forward by working with women’s groups who are concentrating on interfaith communication in order to break down barriers and ease the challenges of ethnic minorities living in a hostile environment. They are working to promote a culture of non-violence. Many of those taking part are still crushed by the senselessness of wars and are keen to reach out to those who are hurting.

India Here is a country with rich traditions and an unbelievable variety of ethnic groups.

A person’s future can be determined by factors that he or she cannot influence eg. Caste, religion, gender or skin colour. All these can lead you to a life of privileges or condemn you to a life of discrimination and subsistence.

Kasta Dip – Director of India Peace Centre, works with his team to remove those barriers through ‘peace and education programmes’.

World Mission News

Pakistan Jennifer Jivan – Director of the Christian Study Centre, Rawalpindi, says that the rise of religious extremism over the last three to four decades has contributed to a mind set which wants to reject the other.

There has been a rise in sectarian and religious violence and terrorism which has permeated all levels of society among politicians, bureaucrats, academia, government servants as well as the ordinary person on the street.

This has left the country divided. The constitution which is supposed to give equal rights to non-muslim citizens is questionable.

The Christian Study Centre, where she works, approaches this development, not just as an academic exercise but as a way of living to promote interfaith harmony leading to peace and justice for all.

Nepal It’s nice to hear progress on work we have made a contribution to.

Reminder – Just before noon on Saturday 25th April, 2015 the first earthquake struck Nepal. Lasting just 45 seconds it caused devastation, changing lives forever.

We responded by taking part in the ‘Build a House’ campaign which gives financial support, through the Church of Scotland, to the United Mission organisation in the Dhading district of Nepal. In this area of Nepal 90% of the buildings and every school was damaged or destroyed. Roads, footpaths and bridges were ruined. Power plants and water supplies wrecked.

The United Mission to Nepal is co-ordinating the building up of the area.

Through the Church of Scotland we raised £310,000, most of which is being used to build 80 schools. These schools are safer and better than the original.

The rebuilding plans are in place until 2020 and so far, the progress has been:    

572 Masons trained in earthquake resilience building.

37 km of footpaths and 15km of unsurfaced roads replaced.

8 Footbridges repaired.

8 Micro hydro electricity generating plants restored.

5 Earthquake demonstration houses built.

All this infrastructure, facilities, training and organisation of communities will serve the people for many years to come.

World Mission News

Christians in Africa Africa is a vast continent with complex culture, many religions, multiple ethnic groups and languages.

The growth in Christianity since independence from colonial rule was totally unexpected.

There are three main groupings of Churches:  

Churches based in missions from European Churches African Independent Churches Pentecostal Charismatic Churches

These Churches are now practising ‘reverse mission’ in that they are sending out missionaries to the West.

The core elements that we can learn from them are:  



There is a renewed commitment to discipleship and evangelism Bible study, prayer and testimony is encouraged.

Repentance and reconciliation are essential for the healing of individuals and communities.

Humility, faithful service and submission to God alone enables the growth of his Church.

As part of the World Church we should give thanks and be inspired by the energy, faith and continuing growth of Christianity in Africa.

Mediterranean Our mission partner, Fiona Kendall, is still in Italy working for ‘Mediterranean Hope’ which helps relocate and settle refugees arriving in Europe.

She asks us to help with prayer: 

For European countries to focus on how best to share responsibility for the migrants who try to reach its shores and to develop and implement a coherent plan of action.

For all to remember Christ’s teachings in relation to hospitality and to practise welcoming a stranger.

CHURCH OF SCOTLAND GUILD KNOCKANDO At the National Gathering of the Guild a challenge was given for each member of the Guild to invite a new member. Is this an impossible task, time will tell. The National Gathering was most inspiring and heart breaking.

Inspiring because we heard from the new convenor of the youth group of her journey to Christianity at the ripe old age of 20. Heart breaking and inspiring listening to some of the problems from some of the projects, that the Guild are supporting over the next 3 years.

There are 6 projects:Seema’s Project – The Free to live Trust  The aim of this project is to rescue and rehabilitate some of the young trafficked sex workers  Double the number of children cared for at the Bori home  Provide skills training for teenagers when they leave school  Start a lunch programme for children in the red light district Join up the Dots – Crossreach  Tackling loneliness and isolation Growing the Future – Malawi Fruits Providing pumps that are run on solar power to enable young farmers, men and women, to grow food not only for themselves but to sell. This enables them to buy goats, put a roof on their houses etc. The United Nations Development Fund will match fund everything the Guilds raise. The ultimate B.O.G.O.F!!!

Faith in Young People – The Boys’ Brigade This involves the Boys’ Brigade in growth in faith, in the community, and in themselves Journeying Together – Empowering Young Mothers in Zambia – World Mission Council This is about empowering young people, especially girls, who are more vulnerable to the negative cultural norms in Zambia that fuel teenage pregnancy, early marriages and violence. Mable a Deaconess in the United Church of Zambia has started a Mother and Child support project, a skills training centre for teenage mothers. The Guild is supporting this project. .

CHURCH OF SCOTLAND GUILD KNOCKANDO A Chaplain for our Ports – Sailors’ Society Since January three Scottish Chaplains have reached more than 9060 seafarers and visited 628 ships. The Guilds’ support for this charity will enable the Society to offer personalised care to seafarers from many countries that need help when they have docked here.

The Guilds theme for the next 3 years is ‘One Journey, Many Roads’.

The Knockando Guild meets in the Church meeting room on the last Thursday of each month September to March at 2pm (with the exception of December) Everyone is welcome to join us in Faith, Worship and Fellowship.

World Day of Prayer Many Churches join together on the first Friday in March to celebrate the World Day of Prayer. This year has been quite an exciting year as the Scottish Committee put forward a bid to host the International Conference in 2022 and Scotland has won the bid for 2022. This may seem an eternity away but the way the years are passing it going to be here sooner rather that later.

The Conference is held in June for 6 days at the Pollock Halls in Edinburgh with 200 delegates arriving from over 80 countries.

There will be requests sent out from the Scottish Committee asking if anyone is able to help in various tasks and fundraising, watch out for these arriving.

Hairst Afternoon Tea Knockando Kirk held a Harvest Afternoon Tea on Sunday 21st October, to raise funds for a stained glass window to celebrate 25 years in our re-built church.

The afternoon was a huge success and enjoyed by everyone. Thank you to all the bakers and helpers and everyone that attended.

The sum of £520 was raised on the day with many generous donations received after the event.

Services of Worship The number of people attending Sunday Worship is steady but not huge however our Hairst and Communion services had good attendances.

The attendance at this years Remembrance service was extremely well attended at both the War Memorial and the Church.

Fabric The Hall floor has been resealed with a dark brown colour stain however the painter has advised us when we have to do this again we should have the floor planed back to natural wood and apply a clear stain which will not mark so easily when moving about tables and chairs.

A damp area in the Kitchen wall beside a window caused by a leaking pipe has been re-plastered.

The security lights for the emergency escape from the hall have been replaced with new LED ones which will be less expensive to operate.

The Church Clock lights have also been changed to LED ones and a new control sensor has been fitted to ensure that they are only on during hours of darkness.

The vestry and vestry entrance floors are to be fitted with new carpets before end of year.

SUNDAY FUN CLUB We have had a busy year, here is some of the work we have done.

Come and join us on a Sunday morning from 10.30-12.30 in the Kirk Hall.

KNITTING FOR MALAWI Some of you may have read the letter from Janet Benson in the Northern Scot about the difficulty and the cost of transporting all the goods out to Malawi.

Meantime, Guilds themselves are still donating items to be sent to Malawi, but on a much smaller scale. Mainly the following are needed   

Knitted Blankets, Jumpers, Jackets, Hats, Mitts and Bootees for babies.

I am still collecting from all the generous people of Rothes who knit throughout the winter.

CHURCH OF SCOTLAND GUILD ROTHES It is always good to get together again after the summer months and this coming Guild session promises to be exciting. Not only do we have a new theme to explore: “Seeking the Way” but we also have six new projects to learn about and support for the new three years.

Reverend Anderson was our guest speaker at our first meeting in October and he spoke about how we pray and what we should ask for in our prayers. Once again we were left with plenty to reflect upon and take forward in our daily life.

We were delighted to welcome Liz Moir from Moray West Presbyterial Council to our November meeting. Liz gave us an insight on the six new projects chosen by the Guild for 2018 – 2021. Three of the projects are based in Scotland: The Boys' Brigade, “Join Up the Dots” (CrossReach) and The Sailors' Society. The other three projects are Malawi Fruits, Seema’s Project (helping Street children in Pune, India) and World Mission Council: Empowering teenage mothers in Zambia to gain education and training. All of the projects are very worthwhile and we look forward to support them all both prayerfully and financially in the coming years.

Guild Week: To mark Guild Week, our Guild was re-dedicated during the service on Sunday 25th November. Members of the Guild also took part in the service with reading and prayer.

Our annual Christmas Carol evening will be on Tuesday 11th December at 7:30 p.m. in Rothes Kirk Hall.

Please come along and join us and get into the spirit of Christmas.

Rothes Guild meets on the second Tuesday of each month at 2 pm in Rothes Kirk Hall. We have a variety of speakers and activities. The Guild is open to both men and women, so why not just come along to a meeting, no obligation to join.

INCHBERRY NEWS …………...

At one time Rothes parish was unique in Scotland in having two Women’s Guilds; Rothes and Inchberry.

The Inchberry Guild was formed after the arrival of our new Minister the Rev Hannah in the late 1960’s. It was an enthusiastic group and flourished for years. Inevitably, nature took its course, evolution, the aging process, etc., brought its demise. The monthly meetings were in Inchberry School, as did other groups, including the community worship.

As time went on, it became apparent that the lectern in the school was in a poor state. The Guild decided that it should be replaced by a new one exclusive to Inchberry. The new one was designed and made locally, but the most suitable, readily available timber was Japanese Oak: it could be said, reflecting on the universality of Christianity perhaps.

The new lectern was presented at a service by the Rev Daniel Gunn. When the services ceased and the school closed, the lectern came to the Kirk for safe keeping.

The Rev Bob began the popular series of winter services in the new hall and the lectern returned to its roots to continue doing what it was made for. It is almost unbelievable it will be 60 years old next year. How time flies.

Many changes in life styles since those far off days. A popular community event took place when the Guild held its Whist Drive and dance to raise funds. An occasion for friends to meet and exchange views. It seems dances are a thing of the past owing to the cost of a dance band.

HORTUS Advent is here and hope is in the air. The four-week season, which this year runs from Sunday 2 December to Monday 24 December, is a special time for Christians.

Meaning 'coming' or 'arrival', Advent is a time of prayer and preparation for the coming of God's Son and as we celebrate the gift he is. It is also a time when many look outwards to the needs of others as well as being grateful for the gifts we ourselves have been given.

The best gifts, of course, can't be found in shops or purchased with money: the gifts of family, of friends, creation, a caring church community, and even the gift of life itself.

Most of all Advent is a time to celebrate the Greatest Gift of all - the birth of our saviour Jesus Christ, born in a humble Bethlehem stable to share our life on earth and ultimately to defeat even death for us so that we may have eternal life.
