The HUB gets a glow-up HOW THE RENOVATION IMPACTS DINING IN 2024 Starting in Spring semester, the HUB as we know it will no longer exist. While both The Star and B&G will remain throughout, Dining does have to make some changes to accommodate the renovations. Here’s what’s happening.

The entrances to both The B&G and The Star have been revised as part of the renovation process.

First, the entrances to both locations will be revised. In The Star, the main entrance has moved outside the building, adjacent to Makuvek field. We relocated our register there, and we’ll have an expanded “Express Lane” to-go area so students can quickly come in, grab to-go meals and exit. Unfortunately, we’ll be losing about 50 seats in The Star - but we hope that having expanded to-go options and seating elsewhere will help. Over Spring Break, the entrance to the B&G will move to the front of the HUB, where Hissho Sushi used to be. No worries, we’ve still got sushi in a new refrigerator! We’ve already moved some things around to accommodate the new entrance. With fewer seats in The Star (and no Pavilion in which to dine in the HUB), we’re opening the B&G at 10 am during the week, instead of 11 am, to hopefully alleviate some anticipated busy times during the day.

4

While we know things might be a challenge to students while the renovation is ongoing, it won’t be too long before we have a brandnew building! DINI N G GUIDE

To accommodate the construction, we’re opening The B&G an hour earlier during the week. Monday - Thursday, the B&G will open at 10 am.

Hungry Hound Express Food Truck New to campus is the Hungry Hound Express, with their signature cheesesteaks along with other specialties. Keep an eye out on @HungryHoundExpress on Instagram for its appearances on campus, at sporting events, and more. Yo-Kai Express Located in the Sally building is Yo-Kai Express, a 24/7 ramen vending machine. At any time, you can order ramen in many flavors and once you make your selection, it will make it in front of you, (extremely) hot and fresh. Natural! Smoothie Also in the Sally is DeLights Café, which still offers all your favorite Starbucks drinks and Zime sandwiches. In Spring, we’re also introducing new Açai smoothies, smoothie bowls, and toasts (including avocado toast). Starbucks Inside DeLight’s Café, you’ll find a new item at Starbucks: Nitro Cold Brew! Nitro tanks will be installed over winter break, and you’ll be able to order it starting in Spring.

Listen to your body when it tells you it is hungry and go ahead and eat. CAMPUS DIETITIAN SUSAN HURD, RDN LDN

Intuitive Eating MAKING PEACE WITH FOOD Susan Hurd, LDN, RDN Campus Dietitian

The concept of intuitive eating is simple: make peace with the foods you eat. Abandoning the dichotomy of whether food is “good or bad” or “healthy or unhealthy” allows you to rid the restriction that often accompanies traditional diet mentality allowing you to focus on your body’s natural internal messaging telling you when you are hungry or sated. The practice of intuitive eating enables you to release the notion about looking a certain way or weighing a certain amount and focuses on what is best for you physically and mentally. Intuitive eating principles follow: Reject Diet Mentality This is a cornerstone of intuitive eating. Restricting what we eat may rob our body of the nutrients it needs and set us up for failure when we do not achieve what we set out to accomplish. In turn, this can negatively impact our mental well-being and also contribute to disordered eating habits. Honor Your Hunger Learn to listen to your body when it tells you it is hungry and go ahead and eat. When we delay, hunger can overwhelm and then the intent to eat consciously is challenged. This can lead to overeating and with foods that might not provide the best benefits.

Understand the Satiated State Taking time to eat allows the brain to register fullness and satiety. It also allows you time to savor the food itself, its flavor, texture, aroma, etc. leading to a more positive dining experience. Accept Emotions Eating to deal with emotions will not help root out the problem. Enlist the assistance of a licensed therapist to understand your feelings. Respect Your Body Humans come in all shapes and sizes. Learn to embrace your existence and to celebrate your magnificent genetic being. Respect for oneself is a path toward happiness and self-love. Gentle Nutrition Intuitive eating is about eating good food to nourish and also to satisfy the palate. It is ok to eat foods we crave, in moderation, and with conscious thought. Health is not about eating perfectly. Rather, it is about the grace we allow ourselves as we progress through the process of making peace with the foods we eat.

Nourishing the Future: My Journey as a Sodexo Nutrition Intern Caitlin Treacy, Nutrition Intern As a nutrition intern, I have had the opportunity to deepen my understanding of the science of food and have learned valuable collaboration, communication, and education skills. I have also become more versed in media and how to market the oncampus dining experience through a nutritional lens. I have created a plethora of nutrition focused social media posts, dining guides, and recipes with the goal of helping the students at Moravian University enhance their knowledge of nutrition. One of the highlights of my internship was and continues to be working with the Campus Dietitian, Susan Hurd. Working side by side with a highly skilled professional has allowed me to experience the practical application of nutrition. One of the most important skills of being a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist that I have learned from Sue is how to cater to each student. As a future RDN, it’s essential to hone in on the specific needs, restrictions, and preferences of individuals. Part of that is also recognizing the environment that the student is in.

10

For example, being in a dorm room poses several challenges regarding cooking. In order to help students overcome this obstacle, I created a digital piece highlighting some of the healthy and shelf stable dorm staples. Another important aspect of my internship is being able to effectively communicate with the students. Recognizing the increase in technology, some of my tasks involve developing educational videos on nutrition topics in order to promote healthy literacy to students.

Check out Caitlin’s videos on Instagram @moraviandining Looking at the future, I am planning on continuing my internship with Moravian University, while finishing my undergraduate degree and masters at Penn State University. From there I am hoping to land a Dietetic Internship with a reputable institution to complete my rotations. After earning my RDN credentials, I am planning on working in a clinical or sports performance setting, followed by eventually opening up my own practice.

The Ultimate Guide to Living and Dining on Campus

The key to getting the meal plan you want depends on where you choose to live.

Christine Bell bellc@moravian.edu Marketing Manager, Dining Services

Students are usually surprised when we tell them how to make sure they get the meal plan they want: choose where you live carefully. The allowable meal plans on campus for undergrads depend on what type of residence hall you live in. If you live in a residence hall with a private kitchen, you have two additional meal plan options available to you.

There are only a few residence halls on campus that are considered to have private kitchens: Beck, deSchweinitz, the Hillsides, the Townhouses, Greek and Organizational Housing (all on North Campus), and The Hill (on South Campus). When you have a private kitchen available, you’re more likely to make food for yourself. This opens up the Silver and Bronze Meal plans, both of which have fewer meal swipes and more Dining Dollars ($570 with Bronze!). If you’re a student that prefers dining in The B&G or if you have to have your Starbucks, these plans will generally work best for you. If you don’t live on campus, or are a grad student, you have even more flexibility. You can choose whatever meal plan you like, from our smaller Commuter meal plans, to a larger Resident student meal plan. It depends on what you may have time or budget for. Some students prefer to not have to worry about cooking or cleaning and love having the flexibility to take meals home (yes, even to your off-campus residence!). Bottom line, though - if you ever need assistance making this decision, reach out to dining or talk to us at any time!

Waste Not, Want Not

Weigh the Waste is a program designed to bring awareness to college students about the amount of food that is wasted in a food service operation. Last semester, Dining interns Megan Curtis and Terence Deegan, along with student volunteers, collected and weighed un-eaten food and unused beverages during one weekday lunch period and came up with some alarming statistics. Knowing these statistics is half the battle. Want to do more? Check out our Sustainability 101 tips on page 15 to help combat food waste on our campus.

Dining interns & Moravian students get an eye opening look at our food waste.

Sustainability 101 CHRISTINE BELL

Want to amp up your Sustainability habits and start making a difference? Dining services has several ways you can help. Green to Go Containers Grab a reusable container! They are available to purchase from our cashiers at The Star or Clewell. It‘s $6 for a large square container, $5 for a round soup container, and $2 for a tumbler (or $12 for all 3). The tumbler comes with the added bonus of a $1.49 refill of brewed coffee at DeLight‘s or the B&G, and $1.49 soft drink refills at the B&G. Reusable Bags Bring along a reusable bag or grab one of our reusable bags the next time Dining hosts our Fresh Market events. These can be used for your takeout at DeLight’s or even to grab snacks from the B&G. Discord Moravian Food 4 All Server Join our Discord server and get notified when we have food left over from Catering events. Stop in, grab something to eat, and go home happy. We waste less food, and college students get fed. It‘s a win-win. Food Waste Reducing food waste is one of our prime objectives at Moravian Dining -throwing away food is expensive and those expenses relate directly to the cost of meal plans! We believe that instead of putting food in the garbage, we should be feeding people instead. Help us curb waste by starting small with your servings and going back for more if you’re still hungry.
