Moravian College’s new, emerald-green synthetic sports field was named for the college’s longtime coaching gem, John Makuvek, and dedicated on September 24. If you build it, they will come. This paraphrase of the signature line of the 1989 baseball film Field of Dreams perfectly describes Moravian College’s new, state-of-the-art synthetic-turf field, installed over the summer and open for competition this fall.

“The setting is beautiful,” smiles longtime Moravian College coach, former athletic director, and now Head Coach Emeritus John Makuvek, for whom the field is named. “It’s right in the middle of campus, so it captures the students’ attention. When a game is in play, students who are in the HUB or simply walking to their dorm can’t help but catch some of the action and get drawn into watching.”

Coach Makuvek himself drew many Greyhounds to fields and courts and athletic contests during his 43 years actively coaching at Moravian. Hired in 1967 as head golf coach and JV basketball coach, he became the head men’s soccer coach the following year and served as athletic director from 1992 to 1996. He is the winningest Moravian College golf coach and soccer coach of all time. Makuvek’s golf teams won the 1994 and 1997 Middle Atlantic Conference titles and the 2006 Commonwealth Conference Championship. His soccer teams competed in nine ECAC postseason tournaments and two NCAA tournament and won one MAC championship and four MAC Southern Division titles. “It was a fun ride,” the coach says humbly. The John Makuvek Field is not nearly so understated. Equipped with a press box and lights for night games, the brilliant emerald-green synthetic turf fairly glows—just like the record of the man for whom it was named.
