Skyway official Dr. Lisa Kelsey provide an overview of the conference. [Glenn Carpenter] By Samuel Johnson Staff Writer The American College Personnel Association (ACPA) has been in business for 92 years, and for the first time ever, is hosting their annual convention just north of the U.S. border in Montreal, Canada. This effort comes as the ACPA pushes its efforts to be more of a global voice in the world of education, success, and collaboration. The ACPA chooses to diversify in many ways, and receives donations to further success for students on a variety of fronts, including research and development for the leaders of tomorrow. They also recognize organizations, that have a made a difference in student’s lives and education success. During the annual convention in March, the ACPA will recognize the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference and will reward their efforts with the Collaborative Excellence Award. The Collaborative Excellence Award is bestowed to institutions or organizations that

combine efforts to achieve education success and leadership skills by working together in different departments. For the Illinois Skyway conference, this collaboration comes in the form of four co-curricular events that are combined with twelve different sports that host each other on a rotating schedule each year. The schools involved are: Moraine Valley, Lake County, Elgin, McHenry County, Morton, Oakton, Prairie State, and Waubonsee Community Colleges. The four events covered on a rotating schedule are Art, Jazz, Science Technology Engineering and Math (STEM) and writing. These events, along with Men and Women’s Basketball, Cross Country, Soccer, Softball, Tennis, Volleyball, Baseball, Cross Country, Golf, Soccer, and Tennis have honed student’s success for education and athletic competition. The Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference (ISCC) has been founded and putting forth their commendable efforts since 1970 and it is very fitting that it will receive this award.

The submission process was over 14 pages long and some of the highlights from the introduction of their submission are noted. “It [Skyway] encourages a vision of intercollegiate competition that emphasizes and takes advantage of the close proximity of its institutions, similarity in missions, and shared perspectives on education. Conference members place emphasis on fully integrating participants into all aspects of the classroom and student life.” Also in recognition of this award, an honorable mention must go to the educators who have collaborated from all the colleges in the Chicago Metropolitan area. This award would and could not have been attained without many coaches and teachers’ alike, working together to breed success. Future achievements are looking positive for the college and the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference to come. Samuel Johnson can be contacted at johnsons488@student.morainevalley.edu

College hosts green energy consortium By Joshua Johnson Entertainment Editor The College, in partnership with the South Metropolitan Higher Education Consortium has once again hosted another Link and Leverage event on Jan. 21 to discuss sustainable living, inspire local conversations and share regional solutions. Moraine Valley was host to the first Link and Leverage Forum and the college pride itself in being a leader in sustainable practices for institutes of higher learning. The current Forum took place in the M Building. A wide variety of people came out to this event including representatives from a variety of industries including higher education, the Mayors Caucus, energy companies, retailers interested in sustainable practices. Sustainable living is to reduce pollution and help provide a safer and healthier society for the future of people and of Planet Earth. “The goal is simple: provide a platform to link existing resources within our communities and leverage them to make

the south and southwest suburbs of Chicago the greenest region,” said Stephenie Presseller, the Sustainability Manger at Moraine Valley. The forum started in the morning with guests signing-in and a welcome breakfast for the attendees. Following the breakfast, a welcome address was given by John Ostenburg, Mayor of Park Forest. Updates on the progress from the last forum were given by Genevieve Boesen the Executive Director of the SMHEC. Boesen also did a brief on the Greenest Region Compact. The compact is a simple pledge by the Metropolitan Mayors Caucus to help better the environment. To help enable a more strategic implementation of the pledge, the Caucus conducted research to help local municipalities align their sustainability goals with environmental research. After the breakout session had a chance to discuss ways to implement new strategies and make new goals that strive toward sustainable living. Sharing SMHEC | page 2
