Hug-a-Tree and Survive

Eloise Anderson, Get Ready Dogs

Ages: 5–12 years (with a parent)

The HUG-A-TREE and SURVIVE Program was started in California after a tragic search for a nine-year-old boy who got lost in the mountains. Because of this tragedy, a group of searchers developed a program for children on how not to get lost, how to stay comfortable if they do get lost, and how to be spotted and found. The hope is your children will never need this knowledge but learning and understanding makes a potential search short and successful with a happy ending.

Redwood Forest Steam Train

Travel over trestles, through towering redwood groves and up a winding narrow-gauge grade to the summit of Bear Mountain as conductors narrate the history of Roaring Camp, the railroad and the forest.

In the 1880s, narrow-gauge steam locomotives were used to haul giant redwood logs out of the mountains. Roaring Camp’s steam engines date from 1890 and are among the oldest and most authentically preserved narrow-gauge steam engines providing regularly scheduled passenger service in America.

Felton, Calif. – Among geared locomotives, three companies (Shay, Heisler and Climax) are widely credited with dominating the logging and industrial marketplace. Shay locomotives were designed in 1872 particularly for Western U.S. logging operations. Roaring

Camp Railroads owns several Shay locomotives, a Heisler, Climax, and five diesel engines. Not all are operational as some are undergoing renovation and extensive refurbishing. On any given day, one might see one or more of the following steam locomotives transporting visitors deep into the heart of the breathtaking Santa Cruz Mountains.

CERT Fall Class Registration in Progress

Disasters can happen at any time! While we cannot stop them, a great way to prepare for earthquakes as well as other disasters is to take the Lamorinda Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) class series. We invite residents to register for the Fall class starting September 11, 2025. The Fall class series will be held Thursday nights from September 11 to October 6 from 6:30 to 9:30 pm. The subjects covered in the class include: personal and home preparedness for all-hazard emergencies, hazardous materials and fire safety, disaster medical response, light search and rescue, Incident Command System, disaster psychology, terrorism, radio communications, and pet preparedness. The information you will learn in these classes is key for preparedness and response for you and your family should disaster strike. Spaces fill up fast. To register: classes.lamorindacert.org.

Protect Our Future, Go Electric!

Did you know that transportation accounts for more than 50% of worldwide greenhouse gas emissions?

The best way to reduce emissions is to have fewer vehicles on the road! Walk, bike, or take public transit. But, if you must drive:

• Switching to EVs cuts out gasoline and can improve human health and safety by reducing emissions

• EVs last longer because they lack the shorter lifespan of an internal combustion engine and have fewer moving parts, which means they need less maintenance and fewer repairs. In addition to personal choices and upgrading your own vehicle, encourage local governments to upgrade fleets and public vehicles.

Kiwanis Club of Moraga Valley Builds on 50th Anniversary Success

Now well into our 51st year serving the community, the Kiwanis are continuing to expand our activities and impact. Our service commitment is enshrined in our organizational mission “to help improve our communities, one child at a time” emphasizing our priority to help children, families, and seniors in Contra Costa and Alameda Counties through service projects and financial support. We are proud to have moved quickly on our 2025 service projects, including participation by community members, and we thank you all for your support including at our recent See’s Holiday Candy sales.

Recent service activities included working at the Monument Crisis Food Center and their “Senior Moments” program, Pumpkin Carving at Hope Solutions’ Lakeside Apartments, helping at Joaquin Moraga’s MLK Service Day, serving as Safeway Food Bank Volunteers, and our annual Daffodil Planting along Moraga Rd. near the Moraga Commons. We were pleased that a number of other community volunteers joined us for these fun and meaningful activities.

Our expected activities this spring, summer and fall will start with sharing material and cash donations with a large number of local charity partners serving children and client families throughout the local counties. Among others, we will also be helping the AAUW STEM program at St. Mary’s College, Friends of Moraga Library with Spring book sales, and the Xenophon Therapeutic Horse Center in Orinda. We will provide support for local schools, teachers, and student leaders. We support the Moraga Parks Foundation Summer Concert series, the July 4th Jumpies/Food/Raffle activities at the Commons, Backpacks for Kids at MCC, Pear Harvest, Community BBQ, Moraga Library Fall Book Sale, and annual Moraga Pear Festival, all leading up to our big annual See’s Candy sales for the community where we love to see everyone in person during the holidays.

We invite you to attend one of our weekly Thursday breakfast club meetings as our guest to meet our members, enjoy our stimulating speaker programs, and learn more about our projects and activities. Visit our website moragakiwanis.org for details and contact us at moraga.kiwanis@gmail.com.

Rotary Club of Moraga

Our Club has been active in Moraga since 1967, following the motto “Service above Self.” We have continued to support many excellent community organizations such as MEF, Food Bank, Moraga Citizens Network, Chamber of Commerce, and Moraga Schools. Rotary International (RI) now has about 1.4 million members in more than 46,000 clubs in more than 160 countries. In the 1980s, RI initiated and continues to guide “Polio Plus,” the worldwide effort to eradicate the disease of polio, which is close to success.

Our Club has provided security cameras with links to first responders in the four Moraga School District schools and will soon expand this system; and we provided medical kits for each classroom. Previously, we gave dictionaries to each student in Moraga elementary schools and provided subscriptions to educational newspapers. We have sponsored as many as 14 teams in Odyssey of the Mind, an extracurricular creative team competition for elementary and high school students. We conduct “Rotary Field Day,” a modified trackand-field meet for 3rd through 5th graders. We are in our 14th year of conducting the popular electronic waste collection (“e-waste”) for approved disposal, twice a year.

Our Club provided the largest gift ever to our Town parks—the All-Access Playground at the Moraga Commons, where disabled children may actively and safely play with their friends

and siblings. Surplus funds from this project were donated to the Town and have been used to improve picnic facilities at the Commons.

Our Club has initiated or participated in many projects in foreign countries, such as the completed Makambo-Moraga Community Center in Sierra Leone and the under-construction Lumumba Learning Center in the Congo.

We meet for lunch most Tuesdays at La Finestra restaurant. For further information, check out moragarotary.org or call Roger Gregory at 925-878-5002.
