This network of Moraga residents works to promote participation in the Moraga community. Its widely read e-bulletin, The MCN Link, is its most popular tool in keeping residents informed. It will arrive in your inbox every two weeks when you sign up at www.MCNMoraga.org. It’s FREE of course!
In each issue there are brief notes on:
• Current issues like a proposed housing development, road repairs, or a survey on waste management.
• Important town meetings where you can learn what’s going on and can contribute your thoughts. The most notable of these this fall is Candidates Night, scheduled for Tuesday, October 15, when each candidate for a Moraga public office will answer questions from the public.
• Library events such as the Lego Lounge, an adult book discussion, and its two annual book sales.
• SMC College concerts, theatre productions, public lectures, art tours.
• Service organizations offering take-out dinners, e-waste collections, garden show tours, and lectures for the public.
Don’t miss out on all our town has to offer!
Subscribe to The MCN Link and check out our Facebook page for late-breaking news and approaching events. Both are great ways to keep you “in the loop.”
There is an awakening at the Moraga Historical Society! This year has seen an increase in membership, Sunday afternoon speakers, website development, and overall interest in the history of Moraga. The Historical Society has been a bountiful contributor to Moraga’s 50th anniversary of incorporation observance with quarterly newsletters highlighting the steps that were taken leading to incorporation and those involved. (Go to moragahistory.org for more details.) Our
history book, Moraga’s Pride, can be purchased at the Pear and Wine Festival in September or ordered online. To celebrate the 50th anniversary, a free book is being offered with each new or renewed membership this year only. Also this year, the Donald L. Rheem family has donated over 60 photos of the Rheem Estate and surroundings, and countless newspaper articles. All photos have been placed on the website for easy viewing.
The History Center is located on the right side of the Moraga Library and is open every Thursday from 1:00-3:00pm or by appointment. We are looking for volunteers to help us digitalize our archives.
This is a 50-year milestone year for both the Town of Moraga and the Kiwanis Club. We are proud of both!
The “Giving Back” priority for our club is to help children, families, and the elderly in Contra Costa and Alameda Counties through service projects and financial support. Last year’s funds have been distributed to worthwhile charities and 2024 service projects are well underway. We thank our local community for your support.
Recent service activities include working with the Monument Crisis Center, Food Bank of Contra Costa & Solano, Moraga School District, Friends of the Moraga Library, Moraga Garden Club, and staffing the jumpys and food sales at the Town’s July 4th celebration at the Commons.
Some of the expected Fall activities include very active participation in onsite support to the Moraga Anniversary Celebration and Moraga Pear Festival, local food banks, Halloween and Holiday parties with Hope Solutions, Xenophon Therapeutic Horse Center, and Moraga Library Fall Book Sale. And, of course, our annual See’s Candy fundraising store where we love to see everyone in person during the holidays.
We invite you to attend one of our weekly Thursday breakfast club meetings as our guest to meet our members, enjoy our stimulating speaker programs, and learn more about our projects and activities. Visit our website at moragakiwanis.org for details and contact us at moraga.kiwanis@gmail.com.
We encourage Lamorinda residents to attend the Fall series of CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) classes beginning September 12 at the Orinda Library Garden Room. This class series covers topics such as disaster preparedness, emergency medical aid, GMRS radio use, fire extinguisher use, cribbing and light search and rescue. No experience is necessary, and the material taught is vital should a disaster occur in our area. Classes are held on Thursday nights from 6:30–9:30pm and run from 9/12–11/7. To register for this class series go to the website at https://lamorindacert.org/training/classes/.
Planting trees can have many benefits for the environment, economy, and human health! Did you know that 1500 acres of trees in the neighboring East Bay Regional Park District (EBRPD) have been affected by a new die-off pattern? Experts say blame for the tree death pattern can likely be placed on climate changestoked heat waves and drought stress, which makes trees more susceptible to parasites and pathogens. While we ensure our parks are led by strong elected leaders, let’s do our part at home! Plant a tree today! Trees can:
• Improve air quality. Trees filter pollutants like ozone, carbon monoxide, and sulfur dioxide from the air, and release oxygen.
• Fight climate change. Trees absorb carbon dioxide and reduce greenhouse gases.
• Improve water quality. Trees slow rain, helping it soak into the soil, and reduce storm water runoff. This prevents soil erosion and pollution in waterways and can lessen the effects of flooding. Trees also act as natural filters for streams, rivers, and lakes.
• Increase biodiversity. Trees are home to many species of wildlife and are essential for the survival of many more. Without trees, the Earth would likely lose 99% of its animal species.
• Help human health. Trees can reduce stress and anxiety, and people who can see trees tend to recover from illness faster.
• Boost the economy. Trees create attractive environments for business investment and development, and can make people want to visit, relocate to, or work in areas with trees.
• Conserve energy. Trees provide shade in urban areas, which can lower temperatures by as much as 20°–45°F (11°–25°C) compared to unshaded areas. This can also help reduce cooling costs in the summer.
So plant some local native trees, or edibleproducing trees in your yard, in your community, and for all remodels and housing developments!

Since 1969, MOL Football has been an alternative to tackle football where the emphasis is on speed and deception rather than violent contact.
The league is open to boys and girls in grades 3–8 living in Moraga, Orinda, Lafayette, or
Canyon. MOL is divided into four divisions: PAC-12 for 3rd and 4th graders, NFC for 5th and 6th graders, AFC East for 7th graders, and AFC West for 8th graders.
Games are played from late August to the first week in November.
AND, we’re excited to announce: Beginning this Fall, we’ll be rolling out an all new Olympic division for 7th & 8th grade girls who might be looking to play flag football in advance of heading into high school. Girls’ Flag Football is now an official CIF-sanctioned high school sport and all three of our local high schools have competitive teams. The new MOL girls’ division will be coached by teams of parents and high school players, and the rules will be more akin to those used by all of the State’s high school programs.
All are welcome!
Registration for all 3rd–8th graders, including the new 7th/8th grade girls’ division, closes August 10.

Our Club was founded in Moraga 57 years ago, one of the 33,000 Rotary Clubs worldwide in every country that allows them. As a service club, we support many excellent community organizations such as MEF, Food Bank, Moraga Citizens Network, Chamber of Commerce, and the schools. In the 1980s, Rotary International initiated and continues to guide “Polio Plus,” the worldwide effort to eradicate the disease of polio, which is close to success.
We built the All-Access Playground at the Moraga Commons, and this year, our donation helped fund the Moraga Commons picnic area improvements. We have awarded scholarships to some Campolindo seniors, we sponsor Scout Troop 246 in Moraga and six Odyssey of the Mind teams from Moraga schools. We continue to support the library project in Goma in Congo, Africa, and have
completed the community center project in Sierra Leone, Africa.
We have renewed the popular Field Day, a track and field meet for 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders in Moraga schools. We have collaborated with Moraga Juniors to collect women’s items for Community Violence Solutions, and participated in Moraga Community Service Day. We will hold a second e-waste/shredding collection event this year at the Moraga Shopping Center on September 28, our 14th year of doing so.
Moraga Rotary meets for lunch most Tuesdays at La Finestra restaurant. For more information, visit moragarotary.org or call (925) 376-7688.
