The past two years have been a time of profound turmoil for arts and culture institutions, but they have also brought about the opportunity for a renaissance.

For MoPOP, this period has served as a time of rebuilding.

Entering 2022 with a renewed sense of purpose, we focused on the core of our mission: public programming that resonates with the local community. Simultaneously, we began strategizing a stronger MoPOP future by positioning the organization for growth, fostering a culture of philanthropy, and establishing a foundation for community-based fundraising. Our roadmap included integrating DEIA (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility) principles into every aspect of our work, as well as prioritizing the well-being of our employees—our most valuable asset. Our goal throughout has continued to be to serve as a catalyst for both local and global visitors, showcasing pop culture’s remarkable ability to break down barriers and unite people from all walks of life.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all those who have joined us on this journey as we strive to engage with our community, spark meaningful conversations, and foster life-changing experiences.

As MoPOP approaches nearly a quarter century honoring pop culture creators and fans, I reflect on the innumerable stories it has shared. From the museum’s early focus on rock ‘n’ roll and the musical genius of Jimi Hendrix, to the mind-expanding ways science fiction and fantasy invite us to imagine alternative realities, MoPOP has brought excitement and inspiration to millions of visitors from around the globe.

At the same time, we know there remain many voices yet to be heard at MoPOP, from visitors and artists alike. Given that arts and culture are among the most powerful tools society has to drive dialogue and change, we believe MoPOP can be an even bigger champion for artists from marginalized communities.

Whether on the museum’s walls, in our exhibits, or across our programs, the stories we share must celebrate the true diversity of the world around us.

Since MoPOP’s founding, the museum has strived to foster passions, create connections, and spark creativity in all who visit.

AFROFUTURISM IN COSTUME DESIGN

“I always put Afrofuture, whether it's direct or indirect, in the foreground of my mind when I'm doing a picture, because I think that it's important. And it's important for us to know where we came from, and know why we do things, and know what we could possibly be in the future.”

For almost four decades, multi-Academy Award-winning costume designer Ruth E. Carter has been celebrating the style and legacy of the Afrofuturism movement through her iconic work for film and television.

This special exhibition offered an immersive vision of the Afrofuturist movement in pop culture by showcasing more than 60 of Carter’s original costumes for films such as Black Panther, Malcolm X, Selma, and Do the Right Thing while providing visitors with a behind-thescenes look into her design process.

The exhibition opened June 17, 2022, and was enjoyed by over 300,000 visitors all of whom had the opportunity to take a selfie in front of an impressive recreation of the Warrior Falls from Black Panther, explore their inner designer with the Costume Workshop interactive, and watch Ms. Carter speak on her inspirations in an original MoPOP oral history film.

Over 400 guests attended the exhibition’s opening event, which included a panel conversation with Ruth E. Carter and Isabella Price; hands-on activations such as costuming and craftwork with Seattle Weaver’s Guild and local artist Candace Cantaloupe; 3D printing demonstrations with FabLab Tacoma; as well as a custom soundtrack for the evening curated by Seattle’s own DJ Lady Love.

Afrofuturism offers a powerful counter-narrative to dominant Western ideas through its exploration of identity, race, power, and liberation.

Afrofuturism is a vibrant and dynamic cultural movement which envisions a future where the African diaspora not only thrives, but drives the cutting edge of global creativity, innovation, technology, and social progress.

Through Afrofuturism, artists and creators merge traditional African aesthetics with futuristic elements, creating a visually striking and thought-provoking fusion as they explore alternative realities centering African and African diasporic perspectives.

By sharing the vision of a global culture shaped by diverse African voices, Afrofuturism offers a powerful counter-narrative to dominant Western ideas of our collective future. This is particularly evident in its exploration of identity, race, power, and liberation, where lived experience provides a space for critical reflection and the creation of alternative ways of being that dismantle systemic inequality and oppression.

Afrofuturism invites us to question existing power structures, challenge dominant narratives, and envision a future that is diverse, inclusive, and truly representative of our global community.

Ruth E. Carter is an Academy Award-winning costume designer and artist celebrated for her contribution to the style and legacy of the Afrofuturism movement.

INTRODUCING

GUEST CURATOR PROGRAM GIRL GERMS: RIOT GRRRL & PUNK POLITICS IN THE PANDEMIC 2022 saw our Curatorial team launch the Guest Curator Program, an initiative aimed at providing emerging museum professionals the opportunity to work in a world-class institution while sharing their perspectives and lived experience through content from MoPOP’s 80,000+ artifact collection.

The program began with Hank Cooper, a Two-Spirit citizen of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma and graduate of the University of Washington’s Museology program. Their exhibition, GIRL GERMS: Riot Grrrl & Punk Politics in the Pandemic, is a simultaneous celebration and critique of the Pacific Northwest’s feminist riot grrrl movement in the 1990s, with a lens toward the women of color and transgender voices that were originally often excluded but now carry on the movement’s mantle.

This inaugural exhibition was a significant success, and we look forward to the many ways the Guest Curator Program will elevate powerful conversations and community engagement in the future.

SHOCK G MEMORIAL In April, MoPOP marked the one-year anniversary of the passing of artist and founding member of Digital Underground Shock G with a memorial exhibition featuring vinyl artwork, photographs, handwritten lyrics, and other related material. This pop-up allowed us to honor his extraordinary musical contributions and acknowledge the loss to the global hip-hop community.

His pop-up stands as a testament to his legacy, reminding us that his artistry as a rapper, artist, and producer continues to inspire and elevate the genre's creative boundaries.”

MoPOP is proud to be home to 80,000+ artifacts spanning a century of pop culture history. We’re always on the hunt for more, though, and 2022 brought some unique treasures our way.

NBCUniversal Archives & Collections provided a loan of velociraptor eggs used in the iconic Jurassic Park franchise.

A loan of real dinosaur egg fossils from the Burke Museum led to a side-by-side collaborative display of science fact meets science fiction.

Our friends at the Jim Henson Estate donated puppets and props from the television series Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, making MoPOP one of only three museums to receive them worldwide.

EDUCATION & PROGRAMS

PRIDE x MOPOP Pride programming in 2022 kicked off with a Pride Bike Tour with our partners at Cascade Bicycle Club, in which forty cyclists embarked on an epic journey discovering LGBTQIA+ history sites around Seattle before ending at MoPOP. We also welcomed our first Pride Youth Mixer, a space for attendees aged 14–21 to celebrate and connect. Activities at this year’s sold-out event included open galleries, zine-making, and a huge dance party. Safe and joyful spaces for LGBTQIA+ youth can be hard to find, even during Pride Month, and we are honored to offer this resource for the younger PNW community.

Pride education featured our in-museum summer camp Drag-Tastic: The Art of Drag, which sold out and had a lengthy waiting list. Campers learned about drag history and culture while exploring costuming, makeup, and performance in a positive, inclusive environment celebrating the joy of self-expression.

SOUND OFF!

Sound Off!, MoPOP's 21-and-under music showcase, returned to in-person programming in 2022 following two years of pandemic pivots. We were delighted to introduce a donate-what-you-can admission model to reduce attendance barriers and celebrate the move to a showcase format with a series of three live concerts.

The showcase model gave this year’s artists more opportunity to connect and grow through collaboration and optimized the impact of the support they received from their program mentors.

Participants reported excitement about the opportunity to come together, network, and feel like a part of the larger music scene.

SOUND OFF! The new model also allowed MoPOP to reach out to community partners for potential performance and networking opportunities. These connections led to Sound Off! artists performing at Summer at SAM, Freakout Festival, and Timber!

Outdoor Music Festival, as well as on KEXP.

FILM PROGRAMMING May saw our Science Fiction + Fantasy Short Film Festival (SFFSFF) return to SIFF Cinema Egyptian Theater for the first time since 2019.

We were delighted to receive a record-setting submission pool featuring a total of 454 entries from more countries and in more languages than ever before.

In August, Movies at MoPOP returned in-person with the sci-fi theme Does This Unit Have a Soul? Audiences enjoyed Minority Report, Videodrome, Tron, and Pacific Rim throughout the fall, along with trivia, photo ops, cosplay, and themed snacks.

THROUGH THE EYES OF ART The 2022 theme of Millennial Parenting focused on “The Village,” a gathering space both literal and metaphorical that provides parents, guardians, and children with community, protection, empowerment, and resources.

Our celebration consisted of two panels, the first featuring Black millennial parents from the Seattle community coming together in an open dialogue, the second presenting an interview with Mashonda Tifrere, author of Blend: The Secret to Co-Parenting and Creating a Balanced Family, sharing how co-parents can create an environment that helps children thrive.

CAMPS, CLUBS, & EDUCATION

MoPOP 2022 Report

The return to in-person programming offered an opportunity to revitalize our camps, clubs, and educational workshops in 2022. Homeschool Days continued to engage our long-standing community and grow to new audiences and higher attendance numbers as our team worked to align program content with current exhibitions, utilizing resources and knowledge from across the museum for a dynamic learning experience truly unique to MoPOP. Fall 2022 programming saw incredible numbers that outperformed all projected and stretch goals. Summer camps also experienced high enrollment, including some sellouts and waiting lists. We look forward to continued improvement as we grow our reputation as a trusted community resource providing an exciting variety of learning opportunities.

IN-MUSEUM AND OUTREACH EDUCATION In a year when many teachers’ work environments were still in flux, the Teacher Advisory Board (TAB) became an essential resource for MoPOP to hear firsthand how complex teaching in the PNW had become. Feedback from TAB allowed us to optimize our programs and serve nearly 7,000 students through in-person and virtual field trips, workshops, student clubs, and family programs Among these programs was MoPOP’s first Outreach Kit, Journey to the Cave of Bemagorn, which united STEAM and MoPOP content to help students explore math through tabletop-style games. This popular kit allowed us to expand MoPOP educational offerings into classrooms, libraries, after-school programs, and more.

MoPOP 2022 Report

In 2022 we made intentional moves to continue building our momentum on Diversity, Equity, Inclusion + Accessibility (DEIA).

This included the establishment of a new team, People + Culture, tasked with building equitable, people-centric foundations for MoPOP for this year and beyond.

IMLS Grant — A federal grant from IMLS allowed MoPOP to conduct an in-depth evaluation of our in-museum workshops in partnership with The Arc of King County, focusing on how we were serving individuals with Intellectual and Development Disability (I/DD).

Sensory Friendly Programs — We hosted four Sensory Friendly Museum Days in 2022, with an average of 150 visitors attending each. Staff and volunteer training with SensoryAccess.org provided valuable new tools to optimize guests' experiences.

Deaffriendly — Grant funding from Humanities WA supported staff training and an external review by the nonprofit Deaffriendly resulting in valuable suggestions on how to make our space more accessible to the Deaf and hard-of-hearing communities.

Language Guides — As part of the extraordinary Ruth E. Carter exhibition, we created the broadest set of language guides ever offered at MoPOP. Thank you to our sponsors and partners: Arc of King County, Deaffriendly, IMLS, Humanities Washington, SensoryAccess.org

LACE Our iconic building saw improvements in 2022 with the completion of a three-year-long project funded by the Heritage Capital Grant to upgrade our environmental control system—an essential resource for guest comfort and the proper preservation of the artifacts in our care.

Culture Kitchen also welcomed a new restaurant partner in SSA Group, a family-led operation that values local partnerships and prioritizes sustainability in supplies and operations.

FOUNDERS AWARD 2022 CELEBRATING QUINCY JONES

The annual MoPOP Founders Award is a tribute and gala fundraising event created to celebrate artists who have made noteworthy contributions to music while nurturing the next generation of creators.

In 2022, the award honored multi-talented musician and producer Quincy Jones.

With a career spanning more than six decades—including 80+ Grammy and Academy Award nominations and a spot in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame—Quincy Jones is the true definition of a legend.

A Garfield High School alum, Jones has deeply influenced Seattle's music scene and Black communities, and his support for music education and outreach has remained unmatched, inspiring young creators across genres to discover and develop their passions.

To honor Jones, we collaborated with local arts group Vivid Matter Collective on a beautiful multimedia mural honoring the depth and breadth of Jones’s career.

The event itself featured an 11-piece house band led by Jones protégé Greg Spero, who supported musical performances by eight tribute artists, two MoPOP Sound Off! alumni, and a jazz combo from Jones’s alma mater Garfield High School. Not only was this a moving tribute to one of the greatest artists of the century, it was also the largest number of musicians ever featured at a Founders Award ceremony.

Proceeds from the Founders Award Gala are a vital component of our annual fundraising, and we are deeply grateful to the attendees, sponsors, and partners of this year’s event for raising $860,000 in support of MoPOP’s mission.

Rockin' Volunteers

MoPOP volunteers assist guests with wayfinding, support public and educational programs, lead tours of our landmark building, and so much more. 116 volunteers provided over 4,000 hours of time and energy to MoPOP in 2022, and we are deeply grateful.

After several years of volunteering at MoPOP, Pakio Galore has become a familiar face for many around the museum. An accomplished designer and makeup artist, Pakio has displayed his fashion work in MoPOP’s exhibit Rise Up: Stonewall and the LGBTQ Rights Movement; featured as a panelist for the opening of A Queen Within: Adorned Archetypes; shared his professional expertise with our drag camp participants; and served as a teaching artist for Homeschool Days. Volunteers like Pakio make everything we do at MoPOP possible, and we are honored to be working in community with such a generous creator and teacher.

SUPPORT & FINANCIALS 2022 saw the museum shifting back toward pre-pandemic financial trends. An increase in visitation resulted in a welcome increase in earned revenue, though as COVID relief funding slowed we experienced a significant drop in contributed revenue. A strong focus on recovery saw us continuing to center our spending on staff and programs to ensure strong positioning for future success.
