Thanks for taking the time to read Century Magazine! We are proud of our first edition. Putting together the Century took some patience and design skills which we had to find in our friend the Evanston Man. We appreciate all the pictures sent in to be part of the collage and further appreciation to all the customers whom answered the interview questions. We took some time to read thru all the answers and were only able to include a few. I wanted to show the world my beautiful customers and reflect on the faces that have supported our business and help make us into the success we are today. ur storied brand started from a need to find hair products that worked for curly hair.

YouTube became an outlet to share her experiences with

other women who were searching for products while choosing a healthier natural hair lifestyle.

22nd Century Natural Woman searched for hair products that did not make her hair hard from too much protein. It seemed all the products contained protein. She searched for a washing agent and moisturizing conditioner that would moisturize the hair from the inside out. For low porous hair it was very important to find a moisturizer that would penetrate the hard to moisturize hair.

22� Century Natural Woman purchased numerous retail hair products to find a perfect fit. She began to research the ingredients on the labels of the products to determine the root cause of her unsuccessful results. She found that most ingredients in retail product were either, noncompatible with curly hair or ingredients that were not as healthy as she would like. This led to further research and the creation of the 22nd Century Shampoo Bar and Conditioner.

SEALING THE HAIR IS THE BEST WAY TO MAINTAIN MOISTURE AFTER AND IN BETWEEN WASHES. Curly hair needs water like plants.

The hair must be wet or damp, to seal the water with a butter, oil, or cream.

Remember to section your hair, it is the simplest and most effective method to care for your hair. Rub the oil, butter, and or cream down your strands. Use as much as needed. This is the best way to seal natural hair.

You must have a water base. If you have been putting things on your hair without wetting it, you are doing your hair a disservice. Your hair needs water, curls thrive from it. Conditioner Written by Toni Darboe on Jul 20th 2019 Use a dab (I’ll tell you about this later...) or over indulge as I like to do in natural hair products and you will agree that 22nd Century Women puts her foot (and a few toes) into delivering a quality product! I have tried both scented and unscented conditioners and have been pleased.

I do prefer scented however for the wonderful aromas that escape my head scarves and night wraps everytime I untie them before preparing my hair for the day. An added plus is that my bed pillows carry these sweet fragrances for a few days following a wash and condition. On one occasion while waiting for a shipment to arrive (I alluded to earlier), I had to make due with the last little bite of conditioner left in the bottle (maybe a teaspoon or a little less if melted down). I added a little warm water, shook it up and voila’, the beat went on as the Whispers would say [‘And The Beat Goes On’]. That little bit got the job done and my hair did not know any differently. That’s the mark of a good product. I totally love my products and the difference they have made in my hair and my daughter’s hair. Great products speak for themselves.

With this in mind, enjoy the videos first (an education on their own for whatever issue you are experiencing with your hair), treat yourself to a sample then let me know if you do not agree. Moist and Soft Written by Tami Savage on Jul 29th 2019 This conditioner is awesome and makes my hair soft and keep it moisturized. I have very fine hair and it dries up like a ball of cotton and doesn’t usually hold moisture and shine for more than a day or two.

With this conditioner it last at least 5 days and I’m able to manage until the 7th day, which is wash day. I Actually have less breakage too!

I didn’t start using natural products until I was three years into my natural hair journey.

A. Hair has always been very important to me but it wasn’t until I went natural that I enjoyed the process of doing my hair. I am no longer damaging my hair when I do it, I’m just going with the natural flow of my coils! When my hair looks good I feel proud because it takes a lot of routine and care to keep it healthy.

A. Hair is an accessory. Great hair becomes another part of your signature style. Personally I think that the gelled look of wash n gos and braids complement the 90’s and early 00’s style that is becoming popular again today.

I was suffering from dryness, shedding, and frizziness.

22nd century helped with all three. The products also helped with dandruff. If I had not found these products I probably would have eventually returned to relaxing.

A. My hair has returned to the hair I had as a child/teenager. Styling my natural hair is simular to when I relaxed my hair. I now am able to do rollersets on my natural hair. I did not get a relaxer until the age of 15.

A. My mother and I were really big on hot oil treatments.

We would do them every Friday night.

A. Probably around the age of 5. I grew up with a beautiful mother who valued her hair. She tought me the importance of impeccable grooming. She is now 73 and she will still remind me quickly if she notices I am neglecting my hair care.

A. Please try!! I have spent hundreds of dollars on the most advertised products for natural hair. These are the only products that have had long lasting results. Particularly dryness.

All fashion is enhanced by a great hair do. Although I am 53, I still value the importance of a great hair do. If your hair is fabulous, it will transform the most mundane outfit!

A. I would recommend watching all of 22nd Century Videos to really understand the purpose of what she does and also to really understand how to use her products. Don’t deviate either, if you’re going to use her products stay the natural route 100%  of the time whether you make something at home or use her stuff because when you keep switching back and forth between 100% natural ingredients and store bought products that have synthetic chemical ingredients (even the ones that claim to be safe), it confuses your hair’s chemistry and you’ll find that your hair won’t be as soft and manageable as the way she promises her products are supposed to do. Lastly, if your truly open, follow her techniques for hair styling to achieve length (I.e.banding), if that’s a goal. Q, Comment on a type of fashion/and or outfit that is enhanced by a great hair do.

e like to say that hair grows better when the scalp is clean.

Most of you know from her YouTube channel by the same name. I am her Number 1 fan, the one and only Hair Freak. Most readers and subscribers would like to know real names but being in the public eye, 22nd Century would like to maintain some privacy in order to protect her family.

Although the internet has brought us closer it has always made it easier for harassment from unlikely sources, so we wil continue to use her username 22nd Century Natural Woman or just 22nd Century. Although she is a quiet introvert, she has really become comfortable expressing herself on YouTube. 22nd Century has been excited about doing this interview and hopefully inspiring others to put their best foot forward in life.

Hair Freak: First question, inquiring minds want to know how you did you get your hair to its current length?

22nd Century: I did my big chop probably about 7 years ago and started to transition from permed hair about 8 years ago.

I learned how to maintain my hair by taking care of it, using natural products, low manipulation, protective styles, and not using a lot of heat.

Hair Freak: Is there a special process or special regimen you follow to keep your hair healthy?

22nd Century: Before my last son I would wash weekly, condition, seal, and do henna treatments. Now, I have to find the time to pamper myself and do my hair.

When I get a chance, I wash my hair and let the conditioner sit overnight.

I try to use the hair stew on a regular basis along with the conditioner. I try to keep my hair banded as much as I can until it needs washing. There is no special regimen, you have to wash and put moisture back in your hair when it’s dry or dirty. Conditioners are meant to feed the hair strands after it has been washed and cleaned. If your hair strands are free from plastics, my conditioner should absorb into the strands feeding them to make them stronger. Once the conditioner is rinsed out, it is best to

seal with an oil and/or butter. This will allow you to set your hair for the night and style in the morning, unless you are banding. Sealing will also allow your hair to stay moisturized throughout the week. If you have extremely dry hair, then it would be best to leave the conditioner in longer and seal with an oil and/or butter. The twisting cream is great for sealing because it combines shea butter and oil. For people with thin strands that are weighed down easily, my mild conditioner is best. They can decide how long to leave the conditioner in and seal with just an oil.

For curly hair it is extremely important to take care because our hair is extremely fragile when it is not braided or in locs. So, it will take some work and love of self. Washing my hair is like going to the spa, I must take my time and make a day of it.

Hair Freak: What do you say to the people that do not have the time or patience to grow their hair? How can they grow their hair?

22nd Century: If you do not have patience, you will need to grow some in order to grow your hair. It is as simple as that. Without patience you will get frustrated and want to cut or go back to the perm. With patience and time, you will want to touch your hair and care for it. You will pick a day when you have downtime to wash and condition.

You will not want to rush the process because you are focusing on the result.

Hair Freak: If someone wanted to grow their hair as long as yours what would be some advice you would give?

22nd Century: First, they will have to make up in their mind that is what they want to do, and they will have to stick with it and have patience. Patience is next and a key ingredient to growing long hair. If you do not have patience it is not going to happen. You are going to maintain your hair like caring for a baby. It takes time and patience. If your hair is dry you will have to care for it like when a baby

long and you know nothing because long hair is in your genes?

we will look when we leave. Rushing will lead to frustration and setbacks.

Your positive energy must go into your hair and its growth instead of anger and frustration. Remember hair grows from the head, the seat of the mind. Frustration will lead to you handling your hair roughly which can lead to breakage, knots, and cutting.

So, if you do not have patience I cannot help.

You will have to get the right attitude and make up your mind that long hair is what you really want. A lot of women see women with long hair and say they want the same hair but knowing full well they do not have the patience to care for long hair. They would cut their hair within three months because their minds are not in the right place. You must have the right attitude to accomplish anything in life. People with long hair are associated with patience, because it will take time to grow, maintain, and care for hair. Long hair will not grow overnight, that is a fantasy like getting rich quick.

Hair Freak: What do you say to the people that say your hair was always

22nd Century: That’s an old tale that goes on within our community, where you have certain families with long hair and other families with short hair. I think people say stuff like that to make themselves feel comfortable instead of finding out what they can do differently. Most people are lazy and do not want to work for it, and it makes them feel better saying that being “mixed” is the reason for having long hair. Hair grows every month so there should be no reason why you cannot grow hair.

There can be certain factors as to why you are having a hard time maintaining length.

This is where your investigation should begin, but again most people do not have the patience. We have not been taught how to properly care for our natural hair. Everyone was quick to slap a perm or relaxer on our hair so that they will not have worry about caring for it. I wrote an article about Hair Sins that can be reasons why your hair isn’t growing. personal choice. Usually we get perms for maintenance issues or because we were told they more professional looking and mature. The thing is over a period it becomes a health issue and the health of your hair strands.

I found that over the course of the years the hair roots get over worked, and the hair follicles would stop growing in and the hair will begin to get thinner. Maybe other women have not experienced this, but I have.

My forehead began to look larger as if I was balding and my hair line was receding like male pattern baldness.

There are other things included in the perms not just the lye but other chemical ingredients that can get into your bloodstream thru your skull.

Over time the scalp can’t take the treatments. We have also been taught that our hair is not good enough in its natural state, so we begin to dislike ourselves and our natural look. We have children looking at us as we are the first teachers. I want my children to love looking at themselves and their natural hair. I felt they were looking at people with naturally straight hair as more appealing and beautiful than their own natural selves. I had to make a change because this will produce an inferiority complex and have them view other people as more blessed or more superior to them. That was one of the main reasons I went natural.

Hair Freak: What is your take on the hair typing system?

22nd Century: I don’t like the hair typing system because it tends to put women in a box, especially when our women are again put last in that system when scientists confirmed we were the first women on the planet. It seems we always get the short end of the stick when it comes to beauty. Therefore, I do not like it. I do not think only certain hair types can grow. Looser curls are handled differently than tighter curls. The key is to find a routine that is right for your hair.

Every woman cannot use the same routine and/or same product and expect the same results. For a long time, I have purchased products in the stores and created a routine around straight hair. Most products in the stores are for straight hair and now there are some popping up for curly hair. Curly hair is different so there is a challenge finding products that work, there are different strokes for different folks. We must listen and learn what our hair likes.

Hair Freak: What do you think of perms?

22nd Century: I wouldn’t necessarily say perms are bad because it is a matter of choice and some women prefer them as their

22nd Century: I began to find out about all the chemicals in the perms.

I found out that the hair begins to thin over time and burned out from relaxers. My hair began to look brittle and dry. I began to remember my hair as a young girl and the thick curls. My hair was natural, and I kept it a little halfway down my back. I got a perm when I turned 21 and would apply heat when I wanted curls. I began to miss those natural curls before the perm and the thickness. My hair looked like straw to me in the permed state. Applying heat to get curls is very damaging. My girls noticed the difference in our hair and associated beauty to the images they mostly saw on television, people with naturally straight hair. It bothered me, but since my hair was straight how can I tell them different? How could I tell them, there was no mistake in their existence? How could I tell them that they were beautiful, just the way they were? The women on YouTube, whom were caressing their curls and their natural hair and look gave me courage and inspiration. Yes, there were women on YouTube before me with natural hair channels that I watched for advice. My hat goes off to those women on YouTube 10-1 years ago that helped women and myself go on this natural hair journey. I have no regrets going with my natural hair. For them to come share their experiences

on YouTube was a good thing, so I’m just paying forward the love and confidence.

Hair Freak: What has been your experience starting your own YouTube channel, 22nd Century Natural Woman? And why do you make such long videos?

22nd Century: I make long videos because I feel like I have something to say and for my viewers to get what I am saying. You can never give out good information in five minutes. A person watching will have a thousand questions later. I did not want to cheat my viewers and wanted to give as much info as I could. For my viewers to receive something they can use; I had to take my time and express my thoughts. My subscribers asked me to teach so that is what I try to do. It has been a challenge putting myself in the public eye because some would say that I am quiet. You must deal with all the positive as well as the negative comments. Over time we had to invest in better equipment to make better quality videos. I was excited to reach 100,000 subscribers, and I even have a video that hit over 1 million views. At times it can be frustrating but I try to stay focused and set priorities so that can still be creative.

Hair Freak: How did you come up with your name?

22nd Century: That’s an interesting story, because I had another name at

first, Evolve Moor. My husband came up with that name after some of the first videos. He saw how positively the people were responding to me. I like it because it reflects and explain where I’m at and where I’m going; to the future! The name took well, and I feel like I am in the future with what I want to say. I want my people to be in the future with me.

Hair Freak: Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years?

22nd Century: I see myself healthy, my family healthy and happy. I see my company doubling in size and what we have done so far. I see more employees and more products to help people. I see more people recognizing the value of 22nd Century Natural Products and how it can help them grow and maintain healthy hair. I see a lot of growth and hopefully travelling around doing seminars for women showing them how to grow and maintain healthy hair.

Hair Freak: What are some of your experiences with coming up with your own hair products, 22nd Century Natural Products?

22nd Century: Well, I had an urge internally to come up with these products. There was something moving inside me to come up with these products. I enjoy helping women and men find their natural hair glory by coming up with natural solutions.

I like finding ways to maintain healthy hair, but it has been a journey filled with trial and tribulations. It is the will of a person that gets you thru the tough times and of course faith. If you set your mind, you can accomplish anything. I felt there was a will or something deep within me that pushed me to come up with my products. You will have to learn from your successes and failures, and you cannot be afraid to roll up your sleeves and go to work. There will be a urge to give in to the negative but you have to keep your head up and look towards your help and goals.

Hair Freak: Is there anything you want to tell your readers before we end this interview?

22nd Century: If you are reading this and in doubt that you can grow your hair, please change your mindset.

You must change your mind in order to move forward. Doubt can stop you from moving forward. Know that it is not just hair genes regardless of what you have been told or believe. You must know that you can have healthy hair. Our women have had long healthy hair, but we have forgotten how to take care of our natural hair without all the chemicals. he summertime is the part of the year where a lot of North Americans hit the road for family trips, even with gas prices on the rise. Road trips are still one of the most used modes of travel to visit family members, attend festivals, see the sites, or just take a break from everyday

There are those that prefer taking flights over cars to arrive at their destinations, because planes are faster.
