An integral part of the University of South Carolina, IB@Moore collaborates closely with world-class institutions, partners and executives to provide students with access to the best international business education in the country. Of course, studying international business requires more than coursework. It requires stepping out of your comfort zone and experiencing the world, which is why we’ve been pioneering experiential learning since day one of our program in 1974. While some schools have only recently begun to expand their academic offerings abroad, our students have been learning on location for fifty years. They’re not merely studying abroad; they’re also immersing themselves in languages, customs and cultures. We prioritize experiential learning because we know that understanding business fundamentals isn’t enough. You must also understand the institutional, social and political contexts that shape the global economy.

UNDERGRADUATE Our undergraduate International Business degree has been ranked No. 1 in the U.S. for 25 consecutive years by U.S. News & World Report.

That’s not a coincidence. That’s a testament to our rigorous curriculum, our distinguished faculty and our best-in-class students. By necessity, our admissions process is highly selective, restricted to 200 students per year, resulting in a small student body of dedicated, high-achieving and diverse individuals. Our curriculum is as ambitious as our students, emphasizing the cultural, socioeconomic and political factors that shape international business. The IB@Moore undergraduate degree includes courses in business fundamentals, specialized international business topics and advanced foreign language training. We also integrate our curriculum with intentional global experiences, providing students with a comprehensive grounding in all things international business. Every IB@Moore major is required to spend a full semester (or more) overseas, gaining experience in regional economic issues and insights into key themes such as corporate governance, global sustainability and leadership and public-private partnerships.

Our highly innovative and competitive Cohort programs are designed for students to study two or three semesters at partner universities around the world and gain regional and thematically focused expertise and language proficiency.

All International Business major students go abroad for at least a full semester and may also participate in our short-term, faculty-led Global Classroom programs or even apply for our Oxford Scholars Program in England.

Regardless of how they choose to study abroad, all our students graduate with unparalleled experience and learning, preparing them to become active leaders in the global economy. 15


GRADUATE - MIB Master of International Business

The MIB program empowers students to master a world in motion, providing them with the tools needed to analyze the cultural, economic and political forces that shape global business. The Master of International Business program provides a strong foundation in business fundamentals, as well as the unique challenges and opportunities of international business. Students can select a one-year MIB program to develop expertise in a focused subject matter or a two-year, dual-degree immersion program to earn two master’s degrees from USC and an international partner institution. The MIB’s interdisciplinary curriculum includes 30 credit hours in subjects such as international strategy, cross-border supply chain and team management, foreign investment strategy, sustainability, emerging market business development and risk analysis. We also require students to complete a business methods “boot camp” and professional development workshops. They receive specialized certificates in Global Strategy, International Finance or International Market Development. A Business Analytics Graduate Certificate is also available for students seeking a STEM-designated program to best prepare them to make data-driven decisions. Finally, students have the opportunity to participate in international internships and learn on location with one of our top-tier international partners.

MIB Dual-Degree Program The MIB dual-degree program is a unique, two-year program where students earn two distinct master’s degrees from two world-renowned universities. In addition to a degree from the Darla Moore School of Business, students earn a second master’s from one of seven international partner schools such as the University of Mannheim, the no. 1 business school in Germany, or the ESSEC Business School in Cergy, France and Singapore, which boasts the no. 4 ranked Management Master’s Program in the world. 17

GRADUATE – IMBA International Master of Business Administration

A traditional MBA with an international perspective, the IMBA program is a 22-month immersive experience with a unique blend of classroom instruction, hands-on projects and experiential learning abroad—including working directly with global companies. Two tracks are available in the IMBA program: the Global track and the Language track. The Global track offers an enhanced global curriculum with immersion in an English-speaking country, while the Language track offers intensive studies in French, German or Spanish. Students select from a range of functional specializations that align with their interests, including finance, operations and supply chain, marketing and strategic management. Graduate certificates and elective courses beyond the functional specializations offer students greater opportunity to customize their program of study. The IMBA program also provides students with experiential learning opportunities by integrating coursework with real-world consulting projects.

LEARNING ON LOCATION Studying international business doesn’t end at the classroom door. Learning can—and should—happen anywhere, and that’s why we take international study a step further with immersive study abroad programs. We want to offer our students as much flexibility in international study opportunities as possible, so we’ve developed more than 80 partnerships with the top business schools in more than 35 countries—more than any other business school in the United States.

GLOBAL CLASSROOM These faculty-led courses expose students to new ideas, topics and cultures in an abbreviated amount of time. Students can participate in a wide range of courses, such as Business in Latin America, Marketing in Italy, Competitive Strategies in South Africa, or Economic Development and Transition in Vietnam.

CLASSIC STUDY ABROAD We require all students in the Classic International Business program to spend at least one semester studying at one of our elite partner universities across the globe. These partnerships have been arranged to further our students’ study of international business, functional specializations and foreign languages. Graduate students in programs like our Master in International Business (MIB) program can also study abroad or earn a dual degree from both IB@Moore and one of our partner universities.

COHORT PROGRAMS Our most innovative and advanced international programs are the “IB Cohort” programs. In these selective programs, students spend at least a year abroad engaged in innovatively designed coursework with fellow students from our global partners.

OXFORD SCHOLARS PROGRAM Through our competitive Oxford Scholars program, IB@Moore students have the opportunity to live alongside fellow undergraduates at Oxford’s Lady Margaret Hall College and spend a fifth year pursuing a chosen course of study in one of the most revered academic environments in the world.

COHORT PROGRAMS In addition to our other international experience offerings, IB@Moore students can choose to apply for our highly competitive and one-of-a-kind Cohort programs. Our Cohort programs are designed in close collaboration with our exceptional global partners. Each partner selects 10-20 students who, after time on their home campus, form a cohort that then studies together for a two-year period alternating between countries. Students attend cohort-specific courses, as well as participate together in experiential activities and hands-on projects. Our Cohort programs are a lifelong, relationship-building experience establishing international expertise—unlike any other undergraduate program in the world. We currently offer five Cohort programs, including: •

What sets IB@Moore apart from its peers? We are a very multidisciplinary department with faculty coming from different areas of expertise—management, strategy, organization theory, psychology, sociology, political science, economics, political economy, finance, marketing and more.

Why study international business? Because this is what most business is nowadays and will be in the foreseeable future. It is extremely complex and requires more sophisticated knowledge and skills. INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCE A well-rounded education in international business must challenge and transform a student's global understanding. As former students themselves or friends of the program, our mentors know firsthand what opportunities—and challenges—await our students in the field of international business. Mentors guide students’ professional development by providing them with critical feedback and advice on their career path, setting them up for immediate success post-graduation and into their careers beyond. In a turbulent global moment marked by geopolitical conflict, commodity shortages and the growing shadow of the Cold War, they recognized the need to expand their lens beyond the functional programs standard in a business school.

OUR FOUNDING In 1974, this visionary group of USC faculty founded one of the first international business programs in the nation. Led by Randy Folks, Ph.D.—who went on to become the first chair and founding member of the International Business Department—they began shaping the inaugural program that led to the formation of five exceptional programs, two of which are now ranked No.1 in the nation.

RANDY FOLKS When Randy Folks first had the idea to establish an international business program, he didn’t know exactly what shape it would take or what the future would hold. He simply knew that in order for the next generation of American business leaders to succeed in an increasingly interdependent, complex world, they would need to follow a new playbook for business education. So he began to write it, along with a few other dedicated faculty members.

Randy was responsible for the transformative foundation, growth and development of the globally recognized International Business Department.

He also shaped IB@Moore’s philosophy that studying international business opens a gateway of success in an ever-changing global economy—a philosophy that guides us still today. Daniel Peach IB@Moore alumnus Daniel Peach always wanted an international career, so for him the top-rated international business program in the United States was an easy choice. “I studied abroad in several countries during my time at South Carolina, but my favorite experience by far was a short course called Business in Europe,” he said. “An energetic group of MBAs and PMBAs traveled to Istanbul, Vienna, and Prague, meeting with local and international companies and touring amazing local cultural sites. I am still friends with many of the students from the trip and now I get to see our professor, Dr. Kostova, every year when she visits London with Moore School MBAs.” When asked about the most valuable lesson he learned from his time at the Moore School, Daniel’s answer came easily: networking.

Governments shift from regulating markets to creating them. Technological advances alter consumer demands and reconfigure markets. Navigating this sea of complexity is no easy task, yet IB@Moore has long been training leaders to steer through the storms.
