I LOVE October. Mainly because it’s the month when we REALLY begin to experience the cooling of temperatures and the change of season in Oklahoma. Summers here tend to hang on for dear life and there’s nothing quite like that first round of 60-degree highs.

How to find the right volunteer opportunity!

There are numerous volunteer opportunities available. The key is to find a position that you enjoy and can perform well in. It’s also important to ensure that your commitment aligns with the organization’s needs.

How much time should you volunteer?

Volunteering doesn’t have to take over your life to be beneficial. In fact, research shows that just two to three hours per week, or about 100 hours a year, can confer the most benefits to both you and your chosen cause. The important thing is to volunteer only the amount of time that feels comfortable to you. Volunteering should feel like a fun and rewarding hobby, not another chore on your to-do list.

Volunteering is important for communities because it helps build a sense of community, connects people, and improves the lives of community members. Cybersecurity Training Offers Entry into a New World of Technology Opportunity Why has cybersecurity become such a high-profile topic in recent years?

We’re relying on technology more and more every day, putting more of our data in the cloud, connecting more devices to the internet, and working remotely a lot more than we used to. All of that just means there are more ways for attackers to get in and a bigger impact if something goes wrong.

Kade Mock Kade Mock is an Instructor of Cybersecurity Network Administration at Moore Norman Technology Center with nearly 10 years of IT experience.

He holds nine industry certifications, a Bachelor’s in Cybersecurity and Information Assurance, and is currently pursuing his Master’s degree.

What courses does MNTC offer to train individuals in cybersecurity?

At Moore Norman Technology Center, we offer several courses that focus on cybersecurity. Our longterm programs, open to both high school students and adults, include Cybersecurity Foundations, Cybersecurity Network Administration, and Cybersecurity Professionals. Each of these is aligned with industry standards and prepares students for CompTIA certifications. For those who can’t attend during the day, we also have short-term evening classes that provide the same certification opportunities as our long-term programs.

In our cybersecurity programs, students build a strong foundation in computer hardware, operating systems, and networking before moving into more advanced security concepts. Along the way, they develop hands-on skills like setting up and securing networks, protecting data, and troubleshooting systems. Our courses are designed around industry standards like CompTIA A+, Network+, and Security+, and students have the opportunity to earn these certifications before they even graduate.

What's the job market like for cybersecurity?

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts a 33% growth in cybersecurity jobs between 2023 and 2033. That growth includes both entry-level and advanced positions, which gives people room to get started in the field

F I R S T R E S P O N D E R S P OT L I G H T Faith & Family: Clay Trotter’s Indirect Journey to the Moore Fire Department Corporal Clay Trotter says being a firefighter wasn’t part of his original goals in life.

“It was just kind of more of a God thing that it happened this way,” said Trotter.

“My initial plans were kind of failing, and it was suggested to me, too, that I might be a good fireman by two different family members.”

Trotter graduated from Mustang High School in 2014. He had played football and baseball through high school and was playing small college football in Texas when an injury during his junior year changed everything.

“I had worked on a ranch while I was going to school down there,” said Trotter. “So, I just kind of fell into ranch work, even after I moved back home.”

Trotter says while he loved being a cowboy, working by himself for long stretches of time started to get old. He had a brief stint in construction before deciding to listen to those family members who had recommended a career in firefighting.

“I just happened to get into EMT school on the last day that I could,” said Trotter. “I went through that, started applying at different departments, and was hired by Moore in 2019.”

Even though it wasn’t his original plan, it turns out that firefighting was exactly what Trotter had been looking for.

“Honestly, I couldn't imagine doing anything else in life at this point,” said Trotter. “I love 16 | MOORE MONTHLY | OCTOBER 2025

every aspect of what we do. I feel like everything I've gone through in life, in ways, has prepared me for certain aspects of this job.”

Being a firefighter in Moore also satisfies Trotter’s desire to be a part of a team.

“We have such a great group of guys here that everybody cares about training and what's best for the citizens of Moore,” said Trotter.

The foundation of his passion for firefighting extends beyond job satisfaction. Trotter says his faith in Christ compels him to strive for excellence.

“You know, I'm doing, in all things I do. I do as unto the Lord,” said Trotter. “That includes every aspect of my life and my profession.

So, if I'm not performing at the highest standard I possibly can, I feel like I'm not doing what Scripture tells me to do.”

Away from work, Trotter enjoys spending time with his wife and their 10-month-old daughter.

“We’ll have been married five years this December,” said Trotter. “My wife has been great in every way, and being a girl-dad has given me a whole new perspective on life.”

And for relaxation, he heads outdoors when he gets the chance.

“I'm a giant outdoorsman and I love hunting,” said Trotter, “But the structure of my life goes like this: God, family, fire department, and then everything else follows that.”

or many people, insomnia is more than an occasional restless night—it’s a chronic condition that impacts overall health, productivity, and quality of life. Traditional treatments like prescription sleep aids may help in the short term, but they often come with side effects or the risk of dependency. Increasingly, individuals are exploring more natural alternatives, and one option gaining attention is medical cannabis.

UNDERSTANDING INSOMNIA Insomnia is defined as difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, or waking too early and not being able to return to sleep. While occasional sleeplessness is common, chronic insomnia can lead to daytime fatigue and brain fog, mood disturbances such as irritability or depression, weakened immune function, and/or increased risk of chronic conditions such as heart disease or diabetes.

Root causes of insomnia vary. Stress, anxiety, chronic pain, hormonal changes, and lifestyle factors are some of the most common contributors. This is where medical cannabis can play a role by addressing both the symptoms of sleeplessness and some of its underlying causes.

CBD and Sleep CBD, on the other hand, does not cause a “high” but has calming and anti-anxiety effects. For individuals whose insomnia stems from stress, racing thoughts, or pain, CBD may help promote relaxation and improve overall sleep quality.

Balancing the Two Many patients find that a balanced combination of THC and CBD is most effective. Strains or products higher in THC may work well for short-

On one of Sasaki’s many late workdays, he finds that Yamada has already left for the day, and he decides to have a smoke at the side of the supermarket. There, he finds a mysterious young woman named Tayama who invites him to the employee smoking area behind the store. Sasaki and Tayama begin their awkward friendship over the enjoyment they get from smoking a cigarette. Tayama tells Sasaki to enjoy a smoke with her as he makes his way home from work on a regular basis.

IKES! It’s October…and that means we need to hear from you on nominations for the 2026 Best of Moore & South Oklahoma City awards. Each year we reevaluate our categories based on community input and voting interest. Once again, there are a few changes, so be aware that some categories are no longer a part of the voting. This is our attempt at keeping the BOM awards relevant for our community. And not just relevant, but fun! That’s why one of the new categories is “Best Vocal Talent.” Make sure you check out the special nomination procedures for this category. Here’s what you need to know about nominations and voting for the rest of the categories this year.

NOMINATIONS

The nomination period runs from October 1 to December 15. We’ve extended the nomination period to accommodate the new “Best Vocal Talent” category. Anyone can submit a nomination in any category. That means you CAN nominate your own business. Check out the categories below. The categories have been changed this year, so check closely!

BOM posts we place on the Moore Monthly Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram pages. ANY BUSINESS THAT IS NOMINATED WILL BE ELIGIBLE FOR VOTES. THERE WILL BE ONLY ONE ROUND OF VOTING. 1. The category is for solo acts only. No bands will be accepted.

2. Contestants will need to submit a 2-to-4 minute video tape of a vocal performance.

3. Video can be submitted to Moore Monthly via social media posting (Facebook, X, Instagram, or YouTube) or by thumbdrive.

4. We HIGHLY suggest that you DO NOT use autotune or any AI assistance. A live re-

hearsal will be conducted prior to the Riverwind event and if your live performance doesn’t match your video, we will consider replacing you with another candidate.

Lingo also says he’ll never forget his time at Southmoore.

“That building has been so great to me and my family,” said Lingo. “I’ll treasure all those memories. That will never, ever change.”

Even as he works to manage the deep emotions connected with leaving the Sabercat program, Lingo says he’s deeply excited about what lies ahead.

“Moore has so much tradition and history that you just can’t ignore,” said Lingo, “And it’s in a great place athletically. I’m walking into a situation where I’m not being called on to fix things that are broken. They have great coaches, administrators, teachers, parents, and kids.

I’m just excited about being a part of trying to put more gold balls in the trophy cases there.”

In the meantime, he’s got the fall rivalry games to kickstart his new point of view.

“Not hosting the two rivalry games this year means I won’t have a home game for a while.” said Lingo. “It’s going to be hard walking back into my old stadium in August. It’ll be fun to see some familiar faces, but it’ll also be fun wearing the red and blue and cheering on the Lions.”
