AUTUMN—WINTER ‘18 HERE WE GO AGAIN! THEATRE DELI IS BACK WITH OUR BIGGEST SEASON TO DATE, KEEPING YOU WARM THROUGH THE AUTUMN MONTHS WITH SIZZLING HOT THEATRE, MUSIC, SPOKEN WORD, AND CIRCUS!

We’re incredibly excited to be working alongside Fuel Theatre to host Sound&Fury’s Charlie Ward; a powerful installation transporting audiences to a makeshift wartime hospital, while Canary and Bismillah! explore two very different tales of war from past and present.

After celebrating a scorching summer of family performance in South Street Park’s Amphitheatre we return to Theatre Deli for four more months of fun!

Sheffield’s own Forced Entertainment return with an exclusive performance of Dirty Work and kickstart their second term of Art Breakers, their groundbreaking young company.

We’re expanding our cultural offering with live music from Rafiki Jazz: Up Close, circus with Ellie Dubois’ No Show and opening our doors for Fun Palaces with workshops from Sheffield theatre makers.

This season sees overarching themes of war and health as we mark the centennial year of the end of WW1 and celebrate 70 years of the NHS. We are committed as ever to bring Sheffield audiences important and pertinent performance while offering a platform to theatre makers creating new and exciting work.

As our NHS hits 70 we’ll be opening up important conversations of mental and physical health. Throughout Sheffield Mental Health Week, Communicate, Tensile Strength and Work in Progress explore very personal accounts of depression, stress and anxiety through storytelling and movement.

Concentrating on physical health Katie & Pip and Pricks discuss living with diabetes while Gutted educates and entertains audiences on living with a chronic condition.

Theatre Deli’s Alternative Christmas welcomes back immersive masterminds The Guild of Misrule, who invite you to dine with Marley and Scrooge, retelling the timeless A Christmas Carol over a Christmas feast. Fat Rascal also return with a hilarious gender bending rendition of Beauty & The Beast!

When the first trench lines were drawn, soldiers held up cardboard cut-outs of Charlie Chaplin’s tramp in the hope that the enemy would die laughing. But as the carnage of war set in, Chaplin’s image was put to a different use...

Art Breakers is the out-of-the-ordinary performance company for young people in Sheffield that has been happening at our venue on Tuesday evenings over the last few months. Run by theatre innovators Forced Entertainment in partnership with Theatre Deli Sheffield, Art Breakers is a space and place for invading the stage, inventing new work and making a brilliant mess!

Theatre Deli spoke to Hester Chillingworth, Creative Producer (Participation) at Forced Entertainment, who runs Art Breakers, to find out more about the project.

Why did Forced Entertainment want to start something like Art Breakers?

We wanted to start a group that offered young people freedom to explore their own ideas and make

their own work – to create a place where young people could think about performance in a different way – outside of the more usual narrative, character and fiction – where ideas like ‘failure’, ‘difference’, ‘mistake’ and ‘mess’ are positive and creative ideas for making performance.

We knew that Theatre Deli was the perfect partner for Art Breakers because they occupy unused premises, which means that their venues are very refreshing spaces for watching and making performance.

Who is Art Breakers for?

Art Breakers is for all young people aged 12–16. Art Breakers is not about ‘acting’ or ‘showbiz’ and no performing experience is necessary. In the sessions we work together as a group, so we’re looking for people who are interested in being part of a collective, coming up with ideas and exploring new territories together.

It’s also very important to us that Art Breakers is an open and inclusive group and that young people who might sometimes feel that there isn’t space for them, can be part of what we’re doing. We’re particularly keen for neurodiverse and genderdiverse young people to know that they’re welcome at Art Breakers.

What kind of things do you get up to?

We play games, we watch clips of other people’s work, we start something new and let it roll and see what bubbles up, we create rules for ourselves and then run wild inside those rules, we make bits of film, we make a mess, we share our ideas, our thinking and our questions. We play with a big jumble of old costumes, with music and with microphones.

Sometimes we make work towards a final sharing at the end of term.

How is Art Breakers different from other theatre groups?

Together we think about what it really means to perform and how we can make something interesting without using the usual starting points of character or story. We are interested in what grows between audiences and performers and what happens when we put unrelated things next to each other in a space. We think about how we as human beings make meaning out of everything we see and hear.

What most excites you about Art Breakers?

It’s amazing to see young people working in a way that I’ve only ever seen older students and artists do, and some of the comments have really been inspiring. I’m really excited to see where Art Breakers goes and how the young company grows next term. It’s been an incredible start to a project that we hope will continue to offer young people in Sheffield the chance to explore performance in new and exciting ways.

How can I get involved in Art Breakers?

We meet on Tuesday evenings from 4:30pm – 6:30pm at Theatre Deli Sheffield. Art Breakers will be starting its second term on Tuesday 18th September 2018. The exact dates for next term can be found on our website and you will be able to sign up to Art Breakers via our website from 10th August 2018. James is suffocated by his past. Based on true events, this is one couple’s journey through bereavement, love, pregnancy, superheroes and enforced pen maintenance. It’s a story about the importance of talking, opening up and grieving at the right time and about not letting your past determine your future. Based on true events, this intimate and gripping account of life and death has been developed in association with Cruse Bereavement Care. 12+

In collaboration with Fun Palaces and various Sheffield based theatre makers, we’ll be hosting an array of activities from arts and crafts to director workshops.

The Guild of Misrule team up with great friends and charity Theatre Delicatessen for the yet another year to present a rousing rendition of this timeless classic, served over a two-course Christmas feast cooked up by local suppliers.

A tale of ghouls, ghosts and - with your help - barrels of festive cheer. We join Marley over a sumptuous two course feast, and some potent potion to keep off the winter chill. Through parlour games, Christmas songs and a little spirited trickery, we must warm the heart of the bah-humbugging miser, favourite festive misanthrope, Scrooge. A show about Christmas spirit, caring for those we love, and having a damn good knees up couldn’t be a more perfect way to warm a cold winter’s evening. A heart-warming, footstomping immersive production, created by writer Alexander Wright.

After a critically acclaimed London run, Fat Rascal Theatre tour the UK with their Off West End Award nominated, gender-swapped musical parody of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast.

A fairytale land, far, far away. A handsome young bookworm who always dreamt of more. A hideous beast, in her cursed castle... It’s a tale as old as time, as you’ve never heard it before. Brace yourself for 90 minutes of boundless energy and musical mayhem as Fat Rascal Theatre explore whether fairytales really can come true - even when the princess doesn’t quite t the slipper.
