BY DEBBIE ERBSTOESSER Chad started his schooling as a preschooler at Shadow Rock Church. He then went on to attend Lookout Mountain, Mountain Sky Jr High and then graduate from Thunderbird High School in the top 10%. Chad played competitive club soccer all through his grade school and high school years. He lettered in Cross Country, Soccer and Track all 4 years of high school. Chad went to Purdue University in West Lafayette Indiana. At Purdue he spent 4 years in the Navy ROTC program on the Marine option. Chad was also president of his fraternity for 2 semesters. The summer of 2017, Chad went to Officer Candidate School in Quantico VA, where he was the Honor Graduate of his class of 300 candidates. Last week, Chad graduated with an Industrial Engineering Degree and Commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps. Chad will be cycling across the country this summer representing his fraternity, to raise funds, awareness and spend time with people with disabilities. Soon afterward, in September, he will report to Quantico VA, for his active duty service in the USMC.
The season’s tryouts started before spring break and games began after it. To join the team, you must have years of experience. According to Coach Shaw, “playing softball at this age level, our middle school years, can be difficult for beginners, so you can’t just expect to join immediately”. The team was a combination of both 7th and 8th grade girls. Softball is a sport that girls should join because “it’s a good activity to do, you get to be outdoors, and it can lead you into the high school sport. “You can also make the team most of the time if you’re experienced.” said Mr. Shaw. Over the past few weeks, Mr. Shaw and his softball team have been working hard nonstop. The team had practices Mondays, Tuesday, and Thursdays. They had about seven real practices as a team. “I’m lucky this year because we usually get two real practices throughout the softball season” stated Mr. Shaw. Practices were held at the softball field at our school. To prepare for games, the girls usually threw the ball around and did some hitting and fielding practice. The girls culminated a perfect season by winning the District Championships with a game winning run being driven in by Kacy Davis. The Rookie Mom: Knowing that I've married the best father for my Daughter B Y B R I G H I D C O N S TA B L E One day, there was a package outside our front door. I hadn’t ordered anything, so I called my husband at work. “Oh yeah,” he responded. “I bought Brynn a special toothbrush.” Our 14-month-old daughter already had an Elmo-clad, Target-purchased toothbrush. Why would she need another one? “But this one is different,” my husband Adam explained. “It’s received amazing reviews on Amazon.” It did look unique: shaped like a banana in an approachable rubber handle with thick brushes. Brynn ended up loving it on her teething mouth. The next week, a similar occurrence happened: an unfamiliar package at the door. When I opened it with Adam, there were three separate toothbrushes in the bag. Another amazingly recommended baby toothbrush hailed on Amazon, purchased by
my husband Adam. “Babe,” I said, exasperated, “We already have two toothbrushes.” “Yeah, but these are supposed to be better than the one before,” Adam explained. After bathtime, my daughter had now become familiar with her bevy of toothbrushes to choose from. Adam had called brushing Brynn’s teeth “Toothbrush Time.” It even came with a song and dance. And we now have a total of 8 toddler toothbrushes. So, why am I telling you this story? It’s because I didn’t even know to care about my daughter’s teeth so early on, that even if I did, I wouldn’t have been as involved as my husband. This is just one instance of how lucky I am to have married a man so involved with his daughter, and her health and happiness. This Father’s Day is June 17 and I encourage you to thank and share the stories of the father figures in your life: a grandfather, a mentor, a brother, a friend, or whomever who has shaped your life in a positive way. Happy Father’s Day to all the wonderful men and father figures who make our community great.

Hello Moon Valley! My name is Alexandra Treat, Publication Coordinator for the Moon Valley Tattler. I live in a loud house on a quiet street in the Moon Valley area with my husband, four beautiful children, and an unruly labradoodle. When I was asked to introduce myself and share my plans for the paper with our readers, I didn’t realize the full depth of this request. My plan for this paper is for it to serve as a platform for connection within the community: a place where neighbors come together, where stories are shared, and where local businesses are given awareness and draw support. Mr. Rogers, the neighbor of all neighbors, once said, “If you could only sense how important you are to the lives of those you meet; how important you can be to the people you may never even dream of. There is something of yourself that you leave at every meeting with another person.” In this spirit, I hope this paper will be a place to leave a bit of your self with the community, because this community is a special place. For me, it’s the place I call home, because in addition to being the location of my house, it houses many of my memories. It is the place both my husband and I fondly grew-up in. It is also the place where we have decided to raise our own children. Continued on page 4
Give your home a mini make-over with cost effective Solutions B Y K I M G E O R G E , L O N G R E A LT Y U P T O W N In this day and age of HGTV, my husband (a general contractor) and myself are often asked about easy and inexpensive ways to update homes. Those shows make it look so easy. Truthfully, making even just your kitchen to look like one of Chip and Joanna’s can cost you tens of thousands of dollars. So, after years in the real estate business and with my husbands’ years in remodeling, here are a few ideas that freshen up your living space and maybe even boost your homes’ value without breaking the bank. Depending on your budget, painting the exterior of the home is a great way to add some updating and curb appeal. Pick a modern color scheme that goes well with your current roof color. Consider replacing outdoor lighting and changing the house number sign, as well, to give your home a whole new look. A quick kitchen update can be done by painting the cabinets and swapping out dated counter tops for new quartz or granite tops. If that doesn’t fit your budget, consider updating your faucet, cabinet knobs and replacing the dining lighting fixture with something updated and interesting. A new backsplash is another way to
completely change the look of your kitchen and is relatively inexpensive. Bathrooms can be refreshed with new faucets, mirrors and vanity lights. This is another area where painting the cabinets and swapping out knobs can really brighten up a room and give it an updated look. Stay away from painting bathrooms dark or bright colors. Neutral is best. Add color with rugs, towels, and shower curtains. Lastly, if your carpet or flooring is worn out, replace it. It’s amazing what new carpet and freshly painted baseboards can do for a room. Keep in mind, however, that it’s always best to keep the number of flooring types throughout your home to a minimum. Potential buyers are often discouraged by homes with a multitude of different flooring types. If your budget doesn’t allow you to replace all of the tile or all of the carpet at the same time, consider just having the grout or carpets cleaned instead. We can’t all afford major home remodels but sometimes even a few updates to your home can make it feel new again, updated and increase curb appeal. Thank goodness for HGTV as it gives all of us ideas for our own home and something to dream about.

“SUMMER TIME AND THE LIVIN’ IS EASY” Wonder where George Gershwin was when he was writing this song? “The fish are jumping and the cotton is high” it sure sounds a bit like Arizona. Who doesn’t love summer, except for the scorching high temperatures in our state? In spite of the temperatures get out and enjoy, learn, contribute and share in the splendid season of “Livin’ Easy” Here is a list of my summer favorites, escapes, the many things that only summer can bring which include several of my fondest memories: lemonade stands, long days, cool margaritas, family reunions, lightning bugs, fireworks, corn on the cob, cousin sleep over’s, roasted marshmallows, grilled burgers, parades, kiddies pools, popsicles, boat rides, street dances, romance novels, blockbuster movies and strawberry shortcakes. So as the song continues;

As a teenager, I worked at Crescendo – the area’s first local coffee bar and meeting ground for my husband to be. Through my high school and college years, I worked a string of other local barista jobs as well, and many of the customers from my early days at Crescendo, followed me (and the coffee) to Jitter’s Coffee and then to Starbucks. This experience taught me something meaningful about our community. As a self-proclaimed MV expert barista, I learned that, while businesses may come and go, this community still thrives and continues to connect. Moreover, I witnessed that no matter how long or short a business is open in the MV area, the part they play in the lives of the community remains. When you move to this area, you instantly feel like a longtime local, even if you haven’t been here long enough to remember chomping on popcorn at Videoland while renting VHS tapes. I think part of the reason for this unique connection, is due to Moon Valley’s authentic, welcoming history that its residents can tap into. My efforts will bend towards seeing that the Tattler will continue to encourage this local trait. It’s difficult to communicate how excited and grateful I am for this opportunity. My background is in small business operations. A few years ago, I made the decision to go back to college to study Marketing. As a 2018 graduate, I can think of no better place to start this journey than in Moon Valley, the place where I feel most at home.

What Should You ask a Contractor? BY DANIEL R. BROWN The Myriad team joined forces with Brendan Bader from Modern Nest to tackle some commonly asked questions about contractors, remodeling, the best upgrades to make for your home and much more in our video series, #AskAContractor! This month, we’re focusing on the most important steps you should take when hiring a contractor for your next project. Starting a home renovation project alone can be a daunting task. But have no fear, that’s why we’re here! Before you begin a project, consider hiring a contractor to do the actual work. There are a few steps to working with a contractor you should know. Start off by talking with a few different contractors to see which ones can do the work you need and are also qualified and licensed. Then, decide which contractor best communicated with you clearly and professionally. How well the contractor communicates with you in the beginning will hopefully give you insight on what it will be like throughout the project. Your contractor will create a document outlining the details of what work will be performed and include an itemized list of costs and an overall total for the project. Be sure to include in the conversation how changes made along the way will be handled, how they may affect the cost and the approval process before a change in the plans is implemented. Throughout the renovation you should be asking your contractor questions to help you stay informed about what is going on and when different phases of the project are being done. Allow yourself the time and budget to do the project properly. Always include a contingency budget to accommodate the extra time and expense for the unexpected things you can expect will happen. Respect your contractor’s time and try your best to stay out of their way so they can do their work more efficiently. When the project is complete, the last step will be to get all of the proper documentation (paint colors, warranties, etc.) from the contractor. And, of course, a detailed final invoice that includes what has been done and the overall cost of the work. You’ll also want to ask the contractor if there are any further steps you need to take moving forward to protect and care for the work that’s been done. ARTISTS SHOWCASE FINE ART IN YOGURT SHOP BY BO LARSEN Art on display, and for sale, in a gallery or store is not unexpected, but in a frozen yogurt shop it is. However, in a store that often has lines and a full eating, area it was the perfect destination for paintings created by artists from the Civitan Foundation. “I was at the Yogurtini with my family and the place was packed!” said Bo Larsen, director of marketing and business development for the Civitan Foundation, Inc. “There were some paintings on the wall and I just knew our guys’ art was better. With so many people in one place, I thought this would be a great opportunity to showcase our talent.” Yogurtini Bell Towne, a frozen yogurt shop, is located at 475 E. Bell Road in the Bell Towne Center. The Civitan Fine Art Group is part of the Civitan Foundation, a non-profit organization providing people with disabilities superior life experiences, vocational training, and independent living-skill development. “The artists earn an income by selling their artwork,” said Merilee Adams, creative arts director for Civitan. “Opportunities to show and sell their works builds confidence and inspires them to create. It’s a fun environment when we’re all working in the gallery painting.” The Civitan Fine Art Group has a gallery and workshop located within Flerish Design and Resale, Civitan’s thrift store located at 12625 N. Cave Creek Road. The thrift store supports programs and services of Civitan, as well as provides job skill training for many of its members. The Civitan Foundation, headquartered at 12635 N. 42nd Street includes the Civitan Village Life Learning Center providing members vocational training, music instruction, culinary and catering services, an arts and drama program, media services, yoga classes and more. Other programs include Camp Civitan in Williams. Founded in 1968, Camp Civitan is a unique camp for children and adults with disabilities. Flerish Design and Resale, where members learn retail skills, earn an income, and serve the community. The foundation’s Home and Community Based Services provide individualized services for members and families in the home. Other services offered by Civitan include a respite house for families, weekend community based recreation activities and, adult day programs in the towns of Williams and Maricopa, as well as the Civitan on 66, a boutique thrift store in Williams. Common Dental Questions and Their Answers Often I am approached with dental health questions based on curiosity and a genuine lack of knowledge. So, thought I would tackle a few (of the many) questions I’ve encountered over the years. Most likely you have wondered about one or more of these yourself What exactly is a “crown?” I’m sure several have heard this term in the dental office, and it can be confusing as to what exactly it is. On the whole, it’s a fabricated item that gets placed on top of a prepared tooth- in layman’s terms, it often is referred to as a “cap.” Crowns can be made in several different types of materials (examples include metal and porcelain), and can either be made in a dental lab, or right in the office during your visit! The type of crown placed generally gets determined by your tooth. For example, if the tooth is right in the front, then for esthetics, you will most likely get an all porcelain crown. If the tooth is all the way in the back incurring higher forces from chewing, then a crown with materials that can withstand the load will be chosen. The crown’s purpose is to provided protection and strength to a tooth that has been compromised, where the tooth does not have enough tooth structure to be healthy on its own. Often they are the recommended treatment for scenarios when your tooth is broken, has a very large cavity, or has had a root canal. What are the benefits of getting orthodontics as an adult? As you age, your teeth tend to do something we call a mesial drift. This means the teeth are
B Y N E E T U G . PAT E L , D. D. S . constantly moving, and therefore can get out of alignment. When this happens, your bite can change slightly, and some areas can become a little harder to keep clean. When teeth overlap, it is difficult to floss and brush properly there, in turn affecting your gum and bone health. If the bite feels off, that can lead to other jaw and joint problems as well. So getting braces (bracket form) or invisalign (clear trays) are really good options to fix the issues. The treatment duration will be determined by your practitioner, and can be as little as 6 months to a year depending on the case. So go ahead and do it, and get the smile you always wanted as a bonus! Should I get all of my silver fillings replaced? This can be a tricky topic. I start by informing patients no filling lasts forever- at some point they will need replacement. My determinant for removing an old filling is based on both the clinical and radiographic exam done during your dental visit. If the filling is not flush with the tooth anymore, has fracture lines stemming from the filling, any decay or leakage, or is broken, then any of those are cause for replacement. Many offices now only do tooth-colored (resin) fillings, so there is no need to replace with silver anymore. Bottom line: you don’t need to seek out replacing all of your fillings at once, but when it is time, do not hesitate and get it done. Neetu G. Top 5 Healthy Habits (we tend to ignore) WELLNESS IN MOTION BY DR. NICHOLAS WARNER For the sake of this discussion, let's assume you're exercising regularly and eating a balanced, nutritious diet – the two most common habits people think of when they hear the phrase "healthy habits." In fact, we're also not going to delve into the topics of sleep and stress, both of which can dramatically impact health and overall life satisfaction. No, today's lesson is on the top five healthy habits you probably haven't adopted yet – and failure to do so is damaging your health and wellness in ways you can't imagine. 1. Make More Calls (Without Your Phone): There's a reason we're starting with this one: With an estimated 270 million mobile-phone users in the U.S. alone as of 2018 (the U.S. population is 325 million, 20 million of whom are under the age of 5 and – we hope – not in possession of their own mobile phone), we are indeed a phone culture, and not primarily for audible talking. Texting, chatting and posting (often in anonymous, disparaging fashion) have become our primary methods of communication. Research suggests mobile-phone use not only has physical consequences ("text claw," "cell phone elbow," forward head posture, etc.), but also psychological ones, including anxiety related to receiving (or not receiving) messages, reduced face-toface communication skills, and even a condition coined "nomophobia" (fear of being without your phone). So write a letter (yes, on paper) or card to a loved one; set up a regular get-together spot with your best friend (yes, you can use your phone to coordinate it) ... and make conscious, deliberate, empowering decisions to leave your phone at home more often (yes, you can do it). It's one of the healthiest habits you'll ever adopt. 2. Don't Misplace Your Keys: No, we're not talking about the literal keys to your car or house, although misplacing them can cause considerable angst; we're referring to the keys that open doorways to continually learn, grow and build the life you want. Too many people consider themselves "locked in" to their existing state in life: their job, their home, their routines ... even their own body or mind. But dreams don't have to die, especially when your despair at not fulfilling (or in some cases, even pursuing) them can be equally as life-threatening. Go back to school. Learn a new skill. Pursue a hobby. Change the way you do anything if there's a better, more fulfilling way. Think about whether the path you're on in any aspect of your life is the right one. Life is a journey with many roads, all deserving exploration. Don't be afraid to try a different route, no matter your age – especially if the road you're currently on is taking you in the wrong direction. 3. Complete "The List": We all have lists, whether on paper or in our heads; lists of things we want to do, need to do or both. But how many of us actually complete our lists? Do you find your "to-do's" traveling from one list to the next, day after day, week after week, or even longer? That's a problem. Procrastination leads to pressure and guilt, neither of which benefits your health. And when it comes to longer-term goals or "resolutions," if you will, there's a reason you wrote "clean out the garage," "start reading every night" or "take a vacation this year" on a list. If every day is another "why haven't I done it yet" conversation in your head (or with your significant other), you'll quickly find yourself in an entirely unhealthy place. 4. Do a Little Prep Work: It's 9 p.m. and your day has felt like just about every day lately: rushed, overflowing with responsibilities, and with absolutely no opportunity for even a few precious moments of "you time." Common sense tells you relaxation time has finally arrived ... but wait: If you take just a few minutes to prepare for the next manic morning, you'll lighten your proverbial load and start the day in a better place. Whether that means getting school lunches ready, pre-scrambling eggs for breakfast, picking out tomorrow's outfit, or getting something else done instead of waiting until morning, you can save considerable time (and stress) by doing a little prep work. And no, this advice doesn't just apply to busy parents; everyone can benefit from more preparation. Figure out what you could do sooner, rather than later, in your life and then get it done! 5. Believe in the Power of No: This one works in both directions and covers habits 1-4 above. As soon as you learn to say no, your life takes on an entirely new meaning. Can't leave work on time because you just "have to get everything done"? Guess what: You'll probably never get it all done (which is what the next workday is for), but if you continually overdo it, you'll find yourself burned out before you know it. Learn to say no to the constant threats to your moments of "you time." (Yes, do a little prep work, as discussed above, but not if it means you never get to relax.) On the other hand, also learn to say no to the tendency to avoid doing the things you know would improve your life (such as these habits). Don't let fear, comfort (or discomfort) or anything else keep you from achieving what you want and know you can achieve. Learning to find balance in your life– now that may be the ultimate healthy habit of them all.

Special Adventures - An inclusive Visit to Martin Auto Museum BY HANA RUZSA Located in the heart of Moon Valley, The Martin Auto Museum is Arizona's largest automotive museum, and a premier destination for car enthusiasts. The museum features 65 rare and unique vehicles along with a large collection of memorabilia, where visitors can trace automotive history over the past 100 years. This non-profit organization is open to the public and available for parties, club meetings, and weddings. We also encourage all learning institutions to engage their students and come for a visit.
If you’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting my son Ricky, you’d know he loves pickles, dinosaurs, and all things cars. So naturally we had to go to visit Martin Auto Museum – 65 classic cars in an air conditioned place close to home: what else could you want? Not only is finding a location that houses what my kids are interested in important, but also the need for it to be kid friendly and most importantly, sensoryfriendly. Since this is my first article of “Special Adventures” I will share that my son has a chromosomal disorder that presents with unique needs for Ricky. Overly crowded spaces, loud noises and the inability to truly explore make going out a potential challenge. Fortunately, Martin Auto Museum checks all the boxes. Drue Nixon met us as we first walked in, and since the museum knew I needed to speak with Drue first, another gentleman kindly helped my children – Ricky’s sister Olivia was in tow today too! – ride a merry-go-round that I could easily see them from and wave while cheers of “mommy, mommy, look at us” could be heard.

Drue loves cars – really all things mechanical – and has been with the museum since its’ opening in 2008. At age 12, Drue took apart a clock his grandmother owned, thinking what’s the harm, it’s broken anyways! He found a spring that needed fixing, got this clock working again, and his engineering mind was sparked. Living on a farm out by where the Cardinal’s stadium now is, Drue found fixing tractors was much more fun than milking cows. Now, he wants to share his passion and knowledge of vehicles with children and teenagers alike. At Martin Auto Museum, touching is encouraged! Ricky and Olivia were able to sit in any car they pleased (except of course for their oldest car from 1886!) while Drue shared facts about each and every vehicle, and encouraged Ricky and Olivia to learn at the same time. They counted wheels, opened unique windows, practiced moving shifters, all the while having so much fun! You can find just about any car at Martin Auto Museum, and I certainly had my share of “geek out moments” when spying a green 1931 Studebaker or a Cadillac from Lily Tomlin’s movie “The Late Show.” But I was most excited about the quiet environment and the willingness of Drue to let my kids be just kids. I asked Drue “what do you want someone to know about Martin Auto Museum?” and he replied “We want people to know we are here to teach children and teenagers the history of cars and the engineering and tech behind them so we can help foster the next generation of engineers.” He went on to let me know it’s through the understanding of the progression of technology that the next car, and the next car were even able to be built. If you’re a highschool student with free time or volunteer hours, come on down and learn from Drue – you may be the next Elon Musk. At the end of our visit, my children affectionately shouted “Thanks Drue. This is the best day ever!”

Rising Rents Means It’s Time To Buy - the analysis has shown that rents have been increasing consistently the past three to four years. In the last year, for example, rents have over increased 4% nationwide. That’s not necessarily a giant jump, but those increases year after year add up. If buyers can lock-in a monthly mortgage, that alone is a huge incentive to get into the home buying market. Per Forbes Magazine: “according to an online survey of more than 1,000 active buyers conducted in early March by Toluna Research for realtor.com, 23% of millennials surveyed indicated that rising rent was a trigger for their home buying purchase. Interestingly, just like their baby boomer parents, many Millennials want that family home with a yard and in a good school system. It seems like the foundation of home ownership desire hasn’t really changed in a long time. Myths & Mistakes About Wills, Trusts & estate Planning B Y L I B B Y B A N K S , T H E L AW O F F I C E O F L I B B Y B A N K S , P L L C MYTHS There is much confusion about estate planning, what it is, what wills and trusts do, and what the law says about all of the above. Here are a few myths I’d like to dispel – myths that can cost you and your estate money and cause heartache for your loved ones. Myth 1: My Will transfers my property to my heirs at death. Wrong! Your Will only tells the world how you want your assets transferred. The mere fact that you have a Will won’t deed your house to your children or cause your bank to pay over funds from your separate bank account to your spouse. Instead, in order to make these transfers, your heirs will be forced to file a probate with the court. This costs money and takes a great deal of time – and it means that your Will is now available for the public to see. Myth 2: Estate Planning is not necessary unless I am old or rich: False! Perhaps it’s the word “estate” that causes this myth. But your 18 year old has an estate – it’s his bank account, the paycheck his employer owes him, his laptop and other personal property, and – just think about this — the inheritance he could get from you if you die. You have an estate too, and, even if you do nothing, you have an estate plan – the Arizona State Legislature put it together for you! However, what the State decided is best may not be what you would want. The truth is, if you have assets, you should have a written estate plan. It may not be as elaborate as Bill Gates’ plan, and it might not be used as soon as your 90 year old grandfather’s plan. Still, it’s important to have a plan that addresses your unique circumstances, just in case grandpa outlives you. It happens. Myth 3: A revocable living trust is too complicated for my simple estate: It’s not! The revocable living trust makes things simpler and easier over the course of your life. That’s right – the trust is a living trust that operates to help you during your life and not just at your death. The living trust is simple too. During your life, you own your property in the trust, but you still file taxes under your social security number the same as always. You have complete control over your assets, just as you did before. But if you become incapacitated, your designated successor trustee can step in to help you. On your death, the successor trustee distributes your property without a court action and distributes it the way you have directed in your trust. The revocable living trust is an easy way to provide for the future, while still maintaining control over your assets now.

This means, among other things, that a deed must be prepared to transfer your home or other real property into the trust. In addition, your bank and stock broker must retitle your accounts in the name of the trust. If you don’t put the property in the name of the trust, the trust doesn’t work the way it is designed. Mistake 2: Putting assets in joint tenancy with an adult child: This is a bad idea! First, you may be making a taxable gift to your child if you do – and the gift tax is paid by the person giving the gift (that’s you!). Second, once you add your child to your bank account or the title of your real property, you expose your property to the ups and downs of your child’s financial life. Is a creditor after your child? Then his creditor may go after the bank account that has his name on it – even though it is “your” account. Third, you could inadvertently disinherit your other children. The child who is on your account or your property as a joint owner is legally entitled to that account or property upon your death. What if that child decides not to share the money with his siblings? Your other children may be left out if they aren’t willing to fight with the sibling whose name is on the account. Mistake 3: Forgetting to consider your life insurance, retirement accounts and pensions in your estate plan: When you make a plan for your assets, you must review your life insurance and retirement accounts. Who is the beneficiary of these accounts? Don’t assume you remember correctly. Double check. All too often, families find out too late that a deceased loved one forgot that his sister – or, worse, his ex-wife – was the beneficiary on the insurance or IRA. And the biggest Mistake and Myth of all: I had my will and trust done by a lawyer, and I never have to worry about it again: As time marches on, your life changes, your children’s lives change, your assets change, and the law chages. You acquire a new life insurance policy, real property or you become entitled to receive a pension. Because you and your life and your assets change, your estate plan may need a change as well. A periodic review – at least every three years – will assure that you have what you need to protect yourself, your property and your loved ones if you become incapacitated or upon your death. Schedule a check-up and take advantage of my free review of your situation. Your plan might be just fine – but give yourself peace of mind by getting a review that lets you know for sure.

GenerationZ Cars - Tesla Model S BY J O HAN S WAR T & CO R N EL S WAR T Since the introduction of the Austin Mini, nothing new has really come to disrupt the car world like the Mini did. Back in 1959, the Mini boasted a revolutionary design architecture and introduced the uni-body flat floor design, an enormous 80% of the volume of the vehicle was passenger and luggage space, 4 wheel independent suspension, front wheel drive and a super compact transversely mounted engine layout. It was produced until 2000 – 41 years! Then one day a man named Elon Musk crossed the pond from South Africa. He kept himself busy by starting Paypal and with that money he made he started a solar company, SpaceX (equivalent of NASA), and an electric vehicle company called Tesla. The first car produced by Tesla was an electric roadster. Then they released the all-electric Tesla Model S back in 2012. A generous Dr. Fredenberg loaned us his Tesla Model S 75 to find out how good this electric car is. The Model S 75 we evaluated had 75kW battery giving it a range of 249 miles. The Tesla had a 518hp electric motor and 387 lb/ft of instantaneous torque. The ability of the Tesla to accelerate is intoxicating – our 75D took a very quiet, no fuss 5.8 seconds to accelerate to 60mph but the P001D with its 100kW battery, can accomplish this task within 2.3 seconds when using the “ludicrous” performance setting! When you floor the uhhhh … “gas pedal”, you will fly past everyone else. Make sure to say hello to your friendly neighborhood police officer. Another amazing feature is the regenerative braking. This is when the “engine” uses the potential energy at speed and converts it to kinetic energy to generate power and charge the batteries

while decelerating. It is facinating and needs getting used to as the vehicle will decelerate quite rapidly when you release the accelerator. You can learn to drive the car with the accelerator only and use the deceleration of the regenerative braking to slow the car during normal driving. The brakes are mostly only necessary during fast deceleration or coming to a complete stop. No gas for this vehicle and there is a charge port at the rear light that automatically opens when it detects the charge pedal is close – so cool! Getting into to the Tesla you immediately notice the absolutely massive touch screen, 17 inches in fact. It controls everything and this car has internet – very GenZ and very intuitive to use! For all those petrol heads loving gas car exhaust tunes, in this car there is only silence and this initially it feels strange. The quietness makes oneself feel like they are in cocoon from the outside world. The interior is made with high quality materials and everything feels sturdy. There is plenty of USB ports to charge all your electronics and that makes it great for the kids on long road trips. The cabin is very spacious, open, and 6’4” people can actually fit with comfort. The storage capacity in the car is more than plenty. In the rear you have a wide and deep trunk and in the front you have a trunk for even more storage. Tesla showed the car industry that they can use Lithium Ion battery technology in long range vehicles, the interior and features are fresh and autopilot (self-driving) is possible! The car is what we as Generation Z embodies. We think the Model S is an industry disrupter, similar to the Mini, and deserves to be alongside the Austin Mini as an icon that changed the automotive industry forever. We gave the Model S a Gen10 score! If only we can lay our hands on a Model 3.

Single women buying homes B Y PAT T Y S C H M I D A N D S H A R O N H E L L A N D Over the years, we have helped many single women purchase homes. To us, this makes perfectly good sense. Previously, we reported how the 1974 Equal Credit Opportunity Act enabled women to establish credit in their own names, an important economic and social shift that allowed women to establish themselves as head of their own households. The Joint Center for Housing Studies at Harvard University reported “social and economic trends have given women a more powerful presence in housing markets.” Today, in fact, women are the breadwinners in a record 40 percent of American households with children, nearly four times the level in 1960. And, about two-thirds of these breadwinners are single. The National Association of REALTORS also confirms unmarried women outnumber unmarried men in buying real estate. Unmarried women make up 16% of home buyers, while unmarried men make up 9% of home buyers. Naturally, not all these female buyers are young college graduates, so the numbers include single moms, divorced moms, older professionals and retirees. As you can imagine, we spend quite a bit of time in discussion with our buyers while touring homes. As a result of these discussions, we have learned today’s women buyers are well educated, successful in their work and careers, have established great credit scores, and sacrificed to save a down payment for a home and for their future. Many are also getting married later in life, treating marriage as a financial decision (as well as for love!). These women buyers have a few other things in common, as well. They do a little more research into homes and neighborhoods. They ask more questions about the homes. They are more logical and systematic. They are concerned about safety and security. They want nice bathrooms and kitchens. They don’t want to remodel. Drivetimes to work, shopping, groceries, fitness and friends are also considerations. They are proactive and determined. They do not limit their searches to condominiums and townhomes. In fact, many prefer a single family residence. Many of these women have never purchased a home before, although a few signed purchase contracts, or loan papers in the past, especially if they were married. As with all first time home buyers, we are careful to spend plenty of time explaining the home buying process, personally participate in each step, especially the loan pre-qualification and home inspection, and show a few more homes, to be certain each buyer is knowledgeable, understands, and is comfortable with the purchase decision and the entire contract and escrow process - as well as the outcome. Eric Klinenberg, in his book, “Going Solo: The Extraordinary Rise and Surprising Appeal of Living Alone” found that ‘buying a home has become a powerful way for women to pivot from one life stage to another. It’s a signal, to themselves and those who know them that they are ready to invest in themselves.’ Obviously, home purchases can appeal to both men and women that are secure in their jobs, who qualify for a mortgage, and plan to stay in a home for several years. That so many single women are proud to invest in themselves and have the means to do so is an encouraging development. How Smart is Your Home? A BAg of Gold THE WRITE STUFF BY GERRY JOHNSON When I was a little boy, conventional wisdom was that gold was worth $35.00 per ounce. Today, I looked on line and gold was priced at about $1,295.00 per ounce. If my grandfather had buried $1,000 worth of gold in the back yard in the late ‘40s or early ‘50s, and I dug it up today, it would be worth about $37,000. Conversely, if my grandfather buried $1,000 in one-dollar bills at the same time, they would be worth $1,000. (discounting the fact that there might be some collector’s value for silver certificates). This may be a stretch, but I would make the analogy that renting is like burying the one-dollar bills. It does nothing for you except provide you with a place to live. The day that you vacate the rental, you are in no better shape than the day you moved in. However, as my analogy goes, if you had purchased a home, there would be a substantial equity build-up. Study after study shows that renting is no less expensive than buying. The buyer and the landlord get the advantage of appreciation in value, equity gained by paying down principle, and a tax write-off (and depreciation for the landlord), while the renter gets nothing but a place to live. I have seen several studies that project home prices will appreciate by 5% in 2018. A family buying a $200,000 home in early January of this year could reasonably expect to have $10,000 in equity by year end. While I’m not sure that you can count on five per cent appreciation every year, especially in the short term. Pulsenomics’ is projecting an annual appreciation of 3.6% for the next five years. In the long run, I don’t think 5% appreciation is unrealistic, especially in the Phoenix area. Regardless of your overall investment strategy, the cornerstone should be your home. In many families the largest portion of their overall net worth is their home equity. Once you own your home, you can then buy and bury the gold, invest in your 401K, the stock market or other wealth building investments. My advice is to get with a trusted investment advisor, a trusted Realtor, and a trusted mortgage loan officer and make some substantive plans. Somebody with more knowledge than me suggested that these people should have the mentality of a teacher, instead of the mentality of a salesman. You will find out when you retire that your home is your bag of gold. - Gerry Johnson -

Located on 3rd Street and Greenway, Half Moon is described as an upscale sports grill by co-owner Clay Moizo. Half Moon is centered around the people and the neighborhood. “We hire a lot of people from the local area. Many of our employees have worked at Half Moon for a long time and really get to know our customers,” said Clay. Clay has seen many changes in Moon Valley which are reflected at Half Moon. “There has been an influx of younger families in the area that appreciate the Moon Valley culture. Half Moon offers a casual yet upscale atmosphere with a variety of menu items for families. sports fans and business lunches,” he said. An evolving menu While the neighborhood vibe hasn’t changed at Half Moon, the menu continues to evolve with a focus on fresh ingredients that are locally sourced whenever possible. “We offer cuisine, craft beer and specialty cocktails that you don’t typically find at a sports bar,” said Clay. “We introduce new menu items regularly based on our customers’ tastes.” Half Moon’s elevated bar fare includes several varieties of wings which have been named Best of Phoenix by Phoenix New Times four times, as well as Angus burgers, sandwiches and salads. Customer favorites include the prime rib sliders, fresh zucchini fried with panko and parmesan, and the fried pork tenderloin sandwich topped with pickle chips, an Indiana classic. Be sure to save room for the half-baked cookie pie served fresh from the oven with ice cream. So many specials Half Moon recently introduced a pick-two lunch special for $8.89 that allows guests to choose two items from a variety of soups, sandwiches and salads. Most Recent Meeting B LO C K WAT C H E R BY B L A N C H E LU K E S Sorry you missed this one. The Black Mountain Precinct meeting held May 9th 2018. The keynote speaker was Maricopa County Sheriff Paul Penzone and the county attorney’s office represented by the head man, Suri Ready, and a number of his prosecuting attorneys in the office. This is a cohesiveness coming together in our law enforcement and in a very positive way. The Black Mt meeting gives us, the home owner, a fantastic opportunity to interact with those that are working to protect us. Not only these men and women in blue, but all the way up the ladder so to speak to the head honchos. At each of these monthly meetings, I enjoy the breakout session where we hear our neighboring communities speak frankly about specific issues with the CAO (Community Action Officer ) who works that area. Then we can address real challenges with them and discuss what is being done with timely solutions. Statistically crime is down 29%. Most of the problems that have remained are vehicle break-ins. That we can correct by not leaving stuff visible in our cars or trucks. Another thought is NOT to leave the boxes from your new purchases on the curb for bulk pick up. The bad guys cruise the neighborhoods looking for open garage door, bikes and equipment left out and seeing an intact box from a new flat screen TV surely would entice the braver bad guys to break into the house . Cut those boxes up and put them in the appropriate can. Hot spots are still 7th Street at Bell Road and Greenway at 32nd street. The good news is the Phoenix PD is listening to our concerns about speeding. 13 more officers have radar certifications. Now we have 40 radar guns out there so drive responsibly. Next meeting is Wednesday June 13, 2018 at 6:30 pm the Deer Valley Community Center 2001 W Wahalla Ln, Phoenix 19th Avenue just south of the 101 No Meetings this summer so take advantage of the up and coming one. BTC Senior Project BY Q U I N N F U N K E A N D CO N N E R P E E P L E S Dwight D Eisenhower once said “Accomplishment will prove to be a journey, not a destination.” While thousands of high school seniors will celebrate their own graduations in the upcoming weeks, a select group of young men will be united to celebrate something else... a transformation of heart. The North Valley Chapter of Boys Team Charity strives to nurture boys to become men of character from seventh grade through high school graduation. This transformation has been remarkably exemplified by the North Valley Class of 2018. Since they began their Boys Team Charity career in 2012, they have completed over 2500 philanthropic hours for the betterment of the community. As part of Boys Team Charity culmination, each graduating class is asked to complete a Senior Project at a philanthropy of choice. The Class of 2018 chose to assist the Tiger Mountain Foundation, located at 1837 East Broadway Road. Tiger Mountain Foundation is a nonprofit organization in South Phoenix which empowers individuals in the community to better themselves from within via agricultural projects. It was started by Darren Chapman in 2007. Chapman’s mission was to build community through creating a purposeful space for people to safely gather. Chapman utilized this space to teach engagement and ethics, changing the community one person at a time, while providing fresh produce to locals. Today, the foundation has grown to serve two separate community gardens where they hold gardening sessions every Saturday. At these events, members from the community work alongside volunteers from organizations like Boys Team Charity. When the Class of 2018 initially met with Chapman regarding a senior project, there were several identifiable needs, but none were more essential than a reconstruction of the stage, reparation of tables used for community meals, and the construction of a shade structure. The Class of 2018 completed the project in two phases. Quaid Veidmark and Jackson Weekly met with Chapman to narrow the focus of Phase 1, which included the reconstruction of the stage and reparations to several wooden tables. As a group effort, these tables were cleaned, repaired, and treated to reduce the effects of weathering in the future. SCC Global offered to provide the materials for the construction and teach the boys how to execute the plan. Quinn Funke met with Chapman and the owner of Total Shade LLC to design Phase 2 of the project. Total Shade LLC agreed to donate all of the materials for the structure as well as oversee the Class of 2018’s construction. Without their generous assistance, this part of the project would not have gone as smoothly. While the Senior project marks the completion of the Class of 2018, Boys Team Charity is an experience that these men will carry with them for the rest of their lives. Twenty-seven students from around the state competed in the five-hour event. Jaidyn completed 10 rounds and was the eighth finalist. Congratulations, Jaidyn! Lamp of Learning Celebration Congratulations to Tricia Johnson, principal, and Sharon Kahldon, fourth grade teacher, at Lookout Mountain Elementary for receiving the esteemed Lamp of Learning Award. Hopefully you are all well-seasoned for the extreme Phoenix summers – but it never hurts to revisit some key safety tips. Heat and Hydration. Ensure you consume adequate water every day. Bring water wherever you go (in the car, on a hike or walk). The Mayo clinic recommends a minimum of 8 cups of water per day, more if you are outside in the Phoenix sun. Think about using a hat, umbrella and sunscreen to shield yourself from the sun. Also, early mornings are best for rigorous outside exercise before the sun gets too intense. Don’t leave kids or pets in your car – as interior temps easily reach 150 Deg F in < 15 minutes. Water Safety. Kids always need constant supervision around water. One way to get economical swimming lessons is to gather a group of neighborhood kids together and split the cost for a swim teacher. Also think about the little ones (kids or grandkids) – any exposed water in your house could be a hazard (bath tub, toilet, bucket). It’s wise for adult pool hosts to get CPR training justin-case. NCL, Inc. 7th Annual Chapter Tea B Y M O L LY K R E S I N The Moon Valley Chapter of National Charity League, Inc. (NCL, Inc.) held their annual Chapter Tea at the Chateau Luxe on Sunday, April 22. Teas are a time honored NCL, Inc. tradition and all chapters nationwide are required to participate in one each year. The focus of the Tea is to teach members etiquette, graciousness, selfassuredness, and good manners in social settings. The Tea Committee was chaired by Conay Huizar and the following current members: Mimi Marino Christensen, Brigitte Rapatz, Brianna Beveridge, Sarah Beams, Mary Ann Markarian, Sandi Shipley, Heidi Paul, Annette Gulinson, Cheri Keene, Natalie Veidmark and Lisa Fischer. The theme of this year’s Tea was “Lunch in the Provence Countryside”. The ballroom was decorated in lovely French countryside décor and members were asked to wear floral spring dresses. Special guest speaker SueAnn Brown, of “It’s All About Etiquette”, gave an informative presentation to members on the importance of appropriately tailoring your personal presentation to various situations, including appropriate dress, posture, speech and manners. In addition to the Tea, the Moon Valley Chapter welcomed the new Board of Directors for the 20182019 year. The entire chapter is honored to have Natalie Veidmark as next year’s president. She was welcomed by current Chapter President Kristen Solheim. Multiple mother-daughter pairs were honored with awards for up to one hundred plus hours of community service this last year. Carissa Kresin, member of Natalie and Maddie Veidmark class of 2022, said “I am amazed by the mothers and daughters in this organization and their dedication to serving our community”. NCL, Inc. is a philanthropic organization with over 200 chapters across the country that all share the mission of fostering strong mother/daughter relationships. Crunchy white sand is warm to the touch. I love to run on it barefoot. Seagulls were squawking over head. The smell of hot dogs and popcorn floated on the air near the pier. I ran into the ocean. It was refreshing. The sun was a blaze on my face. I enjoyed lying on the beach. The sand warmed my back, arms and legs like a blanket. Little blue birds twittered over head joyously making music. Children pranced in the waves. Surfers way out in the ocean enjoyed a ride. I love the beach. What a great place to play or relax.

“The thing about new beginnings is that they require something else to end.” – Blair Waldorf Ah yes. Blair Waldorf. Resident wealthy, spoiled (rotten) mean girl of TV’s teen drama, Gossip Girl (2007-2012). Gosh I loved her. And no, not just for her wisdom. I was out of college by the time GG debuted but I loved that show. Not secretly either. My sister and I would watch together and try to see which cast member we were most like (thankfully, none). We went on and on about how lucky we were to have already graduated and not be socially and emotionally struggling our way through teen hood like “those girls.” But that got me secretly wondering about my “future kids.” What were they going to be like as high school seniors? Had things changed so much since my days as a high school senior (Go Chiefs!) that the pseudo-teens on Gossip Girl may actually be a fair representation of the future? In my experience as a senior portrait photographer, high school seniors are still mostly good. Phew! Sure, they have their moments (don’t we all?) while finding their independence and sure they still have a lot to learn about life but at least some are doing it with grace and kindness. Meet Cailee. While she’s glam and gorgeous like the girls on Gossip Girl, she is not at all similar to them in attitude. Again, thankfully. She’s sweet, respectful and humble and so very kind (and yes, her mama concurs). What a relief for this (now) girl mom! There is hope still that my girls can thrive and grow to almostadulthood in this world without being lead down the path of stereotypically disrespectful and scandal-full teens. So I want to send a giant hug and great big thank you to Cailee and all the up standing seniors out there for giving me a revived perspective on seniors and teens overall. It’s so comforting to know that real teenagers are able to maintain who they are at their core and not let things like peer pressure and society determine who they are (aka Blair Waldorf). A TWIN MINI-HABOOB: GETTING READY FOR THE REAL THING
By Frosty Kroening, Moon Valley Resident At a ball game April 2, twin mini-haboobs (dust storms) raced across the fields at Roadrunner Park ball diamonds. The combination of howling wind, rain, and dust were reminders of what may come in this dry year. Each haboob lasted about a minute. The ball players stood their ground. Cars, hair, coats, and lungs were coated with red mud. Then a soft rain began. Back home in Moon Valley, it was windy, but no rain. Lightning and thunder came the next day, again with no rain. Windy, wet weather was all around us. Several friends reported they lost power and had a wild night. The reminder part is to stock up on face masks and goggles, have raincoats in cars, and remember not to try to out-run haboobs. Shelter in place, even if it is to hunker down and close eyes and mouths and breath through material, if possible. Even major haboobs here usually don’t last more than 45 minutes. Being safe means
not panicking and protecting ourselves from flying objects. If we are in cars, we need to pull off to the side of the road and turn off our lights and keep windows closed as much as possible. That is kind of counter-intuitive. These storms are beautiful, humbling, and amazing. If we are home, we turn off our air conditioner so our filter will not be clogged up with mud. More than ever, having a weather radio and/or application on our cell phones is helpful. This time there was no alert on our phones. Desert kids seem to understand to stay in place and wait it out, but reminding them might be a good idea to avoid having them running in fear and getting hurt. These are not tornadoes, although we were wondering May 2 if a ________________ was occurring. Those happen, too, but not usually at night! Isn’t it exciting living in the desert? Hot and quiet one day, freezing cold and blowing and wet and dusty the next!

More than 200 hikers annually are rescued from City of Phoenix desert and mountain parks and preserves. This simple checklist can help keep you from becoming a statistic. Watch the Weather – Yes, “it’s dry heat” – but Arizona’s temperature can be deceiving and deadly. Hike when it’s cool outside, try early mornings and evenings when there’s more shade. Dress Appropriately – Wear proper shoes, clothing, hat and sunscreen. Bring Water – Hydrate before you go. Have plenty of water, more than you think you need. Turn around and head back to the trailhead before you drink half of your water. Keep in Contact – Carry a mobile phone. Team Up – Hike with others. If hiking solo, tell someone your start and end times and locations. Be Honest – Do you have a medical condition? Asthma, heart problems, diabetes, knee or back problems? Don’t push yourself! (Even trained athletes have been caught off guard by getting dehydrated on Arizona trails.) Don’t Trail blaze – Enjoy the Sonoran Desert’s beautiful and undeveloped landscape, but please stay on designated trails.
Take Responsibility – Don’t be “that person” – the one who wasn’t prepared, shouldn’t have been there for health reasons or ignored safety guidelines. Be the responsible hiker, who takes a hike and does it right! Keep Pets Safe in the Heat The summer months can be uncomfortable—even dangerous—for pets and people. It’s difficult enough simply to cope with rising temperatures, let alone thick humidity, but things really get tough in areas that are hit with the double blow of intense heat and storm-caused power outages, sometimes with tragic results. TRAIL RESTRICTIONS FOR DOGS - DOGS PROHIBITED ON TRAILS WHEN TEMPERATURE IS 100 DEGREES OR WARMER Dogs are prohibited on ALL city of Phoenix hiking trails when the temperature is 100 degrees or warmer.
