Variety is the Spice of Life Summer is finally here! Some say that in sunny California we don’t experience much change in the weather from season to season. While our weather might remain relatively the same throughout the year in the South Bay, there certainly are plenty of interesting people, projects and events that are shaking things up! And that’s what this issue celebrates: the spicy variety that makes up our amazing community. Within these pages we tell the stories of incredible people who are masters of mindfulness, organization and wellness. We showcase some amazing artists in the arena of photography, fine art and music. We’ve even thrown in some extraordinary gift ideas just in time for Mother’s Day. While reflecting on the diverse experiences and inspirational people we have here in the South Bay, I feel so grateful to be able to share these stories with you, and I feel proud to be a part of this community. I encourage everyone to venture out, meet the people and experience all the variety our South Bay has to offer. Enjoy!

as there ever a time you just knew something? Did it feel like a weird “sixth sense,” and then maybe it was gone? Did your intuition lead you on a certain path, despite what your mind told you? When this experience is framed as intuition, people tend to understand and relate better. Author, speaker and intuitive Jill Willard says psychic ability can be thought of as fine-tuned intuition. We are all born with this intuition but from an early age become conditioned to lose it. She says psychic ability appears supernatural because so few people choose to consciously refine and actively use their intuition. Anyone can work to develop their psychic abilities, although some people are naturally gifted in this way—just like others are natural musicians or athletes. When it comes to intuition, Jill is one of those naturals. The beautiful blonde, blueeyed beauty grew up in Fair Oaks, California, surrounded by trees and the American River outside Sacramento. She lived in a wonderful neighborhood in a dream house built by her parents and enjoyed the support of a tightknit group of friends that kept her grounded.

IVORY DRESS BY SEA AND BLUE DRESS BY ULLA JOHNSON; WRIGHT’S IN MANHATTAN BEACH

Jill jokes that “Barbie” was her nickname in high school, and she was the epitome of the California girl who played sports and joined the drill team and cheerleading squad. She would go on to University of California at Santa Barbara, compelled to be near the ocean. Before this all-American upbringing, in her early childhood Jill lived in Europe. It was there she first remembers hearing “the voice.” Though difficult to define in words, she thought of it as nature or a spirit. The voice that was speaking to her was one she describes as being “from God.” Though she accepted and trusted the gift of intuition, when she moved back to California at the age of 6 she became aware that it was something that others didn’t trust. She felt pressure to tune out the intuition … to make the voice quieter. She focused on turning that energy into higher creativity, yet she still heard small things—like what a friend would wear to school the next day or who would come around the corner. It wasn’t until seventh grade that she became more vocal about her gift. She also began having dreams that transpired into real life after. The gift matured as she reached adolescence, but it wasn’t until college at Santa Barbara that she felt free. She let go of old stuff, moved from NorCal to the central coast and finally felt comfortable with who she was. After college Jill returned to Europe again—this time as a tourist—and backpacked around before returning to the South Bay to make her home in Manhattan Beach. At age 25 she noticed her intuition kick up a notch. She appreciated it as a gift but also found it very difficult. She could feel dishonesty strongly in another person she otherwise liked, or she could feel if a person was abusive to others. In 1999 she went back to school at Brooks Institute in Santa Barbara for documentary photography. It was then that she lost her grandfather, with whom she was very close. The experience hit her particularly hard, as she believes she inherited her gift from both him and his wife. Despite any efforts to stifle the voice, Jill found her intuition grow again when she had her own children. Feeling compelled to help people develop their own intuition, she decided to make her gift a full-time profession. As a first step she started doing readings for friends in Manhattan Beach. She practiced with 100 readings on a bench by the

42

SOUTHBAY | MAY/JUNE 2019

beach—a promise she made to her friend Jennifer Freed, a healer in Santa Barbara. Jennifer told her that this was her path and that she would use it kindly—guidance she found encouraging. Jill thought being a stay-at-home mom was her true calling, but as she started doing readings she found the information to be so profound and stunning that people from all over L.A. began coming to her. “My husband, Mark, used to walk our daughter down for me to breastfeed in between readings,” she smiles.

“When you have high intuition, you have a high memory and you also have an awareness you are awake. The abilities are within every one of us as a spiritual being in human form.” After each reading she would send her client a personal email full of information. The messages come to her in five to seven parts, and over time she realized that these parts corresponded to the energy centers of the body. She again felt compelled to share this profound information with a wider audience and completed Intuitive Being—a book she wrote at a dear friend’s house in Santa Barbara, right next door to the estate of another soulful person: Oprah Winfrey. The book launched in October 2016, and the positive feedback was so overwhelming she is currently working on her next book. Titled The Well, the new book dives into relationships, where we carry trauma in the brain and how to clear the negative patterns we have

created in our lives. “Intuitive Being was more about emotional stuff, which can be where the blocks are,” she says. “It’s important to understand that you struggle to have intuition if you are blocked. We call the blocks ‘the water in the well,’ so we knew the next book was going to be how to clear the negative patterns we’ve created for ourselves that keep us blocked.” Jill believes that psychic abilities are the higher, subtle senses that are beyond our rational mind: knowing, hearing, seeing, sensing. They allow us to perceive information on a more subtle level to know what to get and what to avoid in our life. “When you have high intuition, you have a high memory and you also have an awareness you are awake,” she shares. “The abilities are within every one of us as a spiritual being in human form.” She explains that these come with us as part of our higher mind to help guide us on our soul’s journey in life, to help us make better decisions, to be aligned to our life’s path and connect to God/Source, Universal Consciousness. “The sixth sense is feeling that something, and the seventh sense is knowing what that something is.” This is the essence of what Jill is trying to teach others, about trusting your “gut feeling” and then turning on that part of the brain where she believes intuition is located. “It’s almost like if we think of the brain as the computer and intuition as iCloud. It’s as if you can sense the energy, but your brain is what’s able to process it. I want everyone to know that although we often turn it off when we are younger, we all still have it and it can be exercised and made stronger—like a muscle.” When Jill became pregnant with her third child, Jude, she wanted to take a step back from her readings as they were quite draining. But soon after “Juju” was born, her husband’s contract with ESPN was not renewed. They had a 7-year-old, a 5-year-old and a 4-month-old at the time, but she trusted that she was on the right path. A week later, fate stepped in when she found herself in Gwyneth Paltrow’s house to give her a reading. Jill has since become an intuitive to the stars and contributed her writing to Gwyneth’s lifestyle blog, Goop. One of Jill’s other well-known clients is Patricia Arquette, who was filming The Medium locally. Jill was introduced to Patricia through her dear friend and local yogi Julie Rader. Patricia knew Jill was the real deal from all her research for the show, and Jill loved working with Patricia because she was

so open and incredibly spiritual. Jill reflects, “I am over the moon that intuition is coming to light right now, and Goop was a part of the catalyst that brought people to me for readings from all over the world.” She now does readings over the phone, only requiring a person’s first name and their openness to begin the process. Jill recently completed a TED talk on making space for intuition. In the talk she teaches how to clear some emotional layers, how to be open, to be present and really be one with our intuition. As a believer in the power of mindfulness, she also started teaching meditations via an intuitively focused meditative company named IM (Intuitive Meditation), which she cofounded five years ago with another local Manhattan Beach resident, Jake Capps. IM is a simple course for both adults and children and helps new and experienced participants further develop the practice. IM also references the meditative tools that include “I am” sayings. Jill explains that “I am” sayings help teach boundaries and awareness and help clear anxiety and depression. To do this, the tools encourage you to say, “I am,” along with any third word as long as it is positive. “‘I am’ is also known as the first word of God,” she shares. “It is very powerful and helps open the right brain, which is more feminine, connected and emotional.” IM is currently launching a course to help simplify the book Intuitive Being, understand the energy centers and teach easy, simple meditations. Jill adds, “IM goes by the color of the energy centers and teaches you about that part of the body, that stage in your life … and then clears it.” If she wasn’t busy enough, Jill also formed another company called Present, whose purpose is to teach about the brain and help participants enhance their mental health and reduce anxiety. Jill explains, “Anxiety is defined as worrying about the future, and depression is associated with being too concerned about the past. Once we get our brain calm and centered, you clear those thoughts.” Present currently has three offerings that focus on different age groups or stages of life: the Present Program consists of calming tools for children age 5 to 12; the Present Self focuses on teens; and the Present Parent helps teach parents strategies for being more present and engaged with their children. Present’s goal is to help people of all ages deal with stress.

44

SOUTHBAY | MAY/JUNE 2019

The program and tools are taking off, recently being implemented at Manhattan Beach Middle School. Jill’s aim is to get the programs into all the local schools and then expand from there. Throughout all her work, Jill feels the

calling to help others. “There is an accountability with consciousness. Karma is what we do in the present moment that clears our past for a stronger, clear, better future. We’re trying to help people be present to receive those gifts.” ■

The Body Beautiful Lee Tunila thinks the female figure should be celebrated … now more than ever. WRITTEN BY TANYA MONAGHAN | PHOTOGRAPHED BY LAUREN PRESSEY

Lee Tunila grew up in Georgia on a tiny island outside Savannah. At one time she would describe herself as a “river rat.” Now she acknowledges how magical her childhood truly was. Her “anything-but-normal” family lived together very happily in a 100-year-old house surrounded by oak trees. Lee’s mother was not a “typical southern woman.” She shares, “My older sister, Jenny, and I were not raised in a ‘yes ma’am, no ma’am, wear your lipstick before you come to dinner’ kind of household.” Her mother was an artist with a studio in the house, and Lee remembers paint being everywhere. Her first introduction to art happened when she was about 8 years old. Her mom set her dad’s black horn-rimmed glasses in front of her, gave her some paper and charcoal and said, “Draw what you see, not what you know.” Lee dabbled in art here and there but was never really into it. Instead she excelled in math and science, attending engineering school at Georgia Tech, studying physics, calculus and statistics. She graduated with a business degree. Years later Lee was working on the East Coast in advertising for pharmaceutical companies when she made a trip to Manhattan Beach to visit her sister for Thanksgiving. It was then that she met her future husband, Randy. They tried a longdistance relationship for nine months, until Lee decided to move to California and start her own company. While Lee grinded along in her workday, she found herself craving a creative outlet. She registered for some drawing classes through UCLA Extension, and that seed once planted by her mother began to grow. She went from drawing still life to figure drawing and then on to painting. It all just clicked. Her teacher and mentor Joe Blaustein heavily influenced her as an artist. Both his classes and the students’ work inspired her

46

SOUTHBAY | MAY/JUNE 2019

to find her own unique style. She’s the first to admit it took her a few years to figure that part out—at first drawing in a realistic way. Although this style showed her technical abilities, she always felt that it shouldn’t be ‘perfect.’ “Art should make you feel something,” muses Lee, “but I think sometimes people don’t have a true connection to the art in their own homes.” Many of Lee’s pieces feature nude figures, which make some viewers feel uncomfortable. “Even though they might like the painting, some people relegate my art to the bathroom because of that,” she laughs. “It’s taken me a really long time to realize that I don’t need everyone to like my art, because then it would be too commercial. I actually want some people to feel a bit uncomfortable. I want them to feel something. It’s only indifference that’s hard to take.” For Lee, finding art is kind of like falling in love—there doesn’t have to be a rhyme or reason to it, it is just what you feel. “One of my favorite works is a small mono-print piece I scored at a flea market in Savannah,” she shares. “I researched the artist after I brought it home and turns out he was the first African American professor at one of the colleges in Savannah. Knowing that makes the piece even more meaningful to me. The other piece I love is a tiny painting Randy bought for me ages ago that hangs above our king-size bed. I’m sentimental about it because it’s the first piece of art he bought for me.” Lee confesses she was extremely private about her art while finding her way. Her husband remains a huge support for her and managed to walk the line of respecting her privacy in the beginning of her art journey. “My father held my mom with an open hand, allowing her to follow her own creative pursuits,” she says. “Randy does just that, he holds me with an open hand.” Only once she truly honed her abstract

style was she ready to face the world and call herself an artist. Though abstract, there is a definite order to her process, and she will not stop until a piece looks balanced. She starts by creating a figure sketch on a large canvas, adding paint and then turning the canvas, adding more layers and sketches each time. Interestingly her paintings are never just one single sketch, and sometimes you have to search for the human figure within the painting. They are never “perfect” or exactly proportioned, but they are always balanced. If she isn’t convinced the painting is done and feels there are areas that aren’t settled, she sometimes leaves the canvas for six months to a year before she comes back to it. Each piece is a true labor of love. She loves the lifestyle of the South Bay but yearns for a closer artist community or place where artists can show their art on a monthly basis, as they do in Laguna Beach. There have been some attempts in Hermosa Beach and El Segundo, but it’s at times proven difficult to get the city’s support or to afford the rising rents. As a mother to two teenage boys, Lee’s primary focus and priority is her family, so she fits her art into her life when she can. She believes the arts are incredibly important for our children, so she has donated a number of her paintings to Young at Art, a nonprofit organization that brings art into the local elementary schools, and to the LA25 Foundation, which benefits South Bay arts and education. The first time I saw Lee’s artwork a few years ago at the Holly Socrates Gallery in El Segundo, I just knew I had to have it. Coming from a family of artists and being one myself, most of the pieces I owned had been produced by family members or myself or were gifts from close friends. I had never felt the desire to buy art before. But Lee’s art stirred something in me, and her artwork was the first original art piece I ever bought from another artist. To Lee, art is born out of pure inspiration. I hope, like they did for me, her pieces also inspire you. Check out her work at leetunila.com. ■

Sharp Focus At 15, Anton Watts had a pretty clear picture of what he wanted to do with his life. The drive might not have been as predictable as he once imagined, but he is and always will be a photographer. WRITTEN BY TANYA MONAGHAN PHOTOGRAPHED BY ANTON WATTS

I

f you’re lucky enough to spend any time with Anton Watts, chances are you’ll have a great time. Though a wisecracking, playful person, he doesn’t easily fit into a mold. Just when you’ve got him pegged as the life-of-theparty world traveler, you might also be pleasantly surprised by his dedication to his craft (gorgeous photography), as well as his incredible attention to detail, his creativity and design, and most of all his generosity, thoughtfulness, and love for his family and friends. Anton has the ability to connect quickly and deeply with people from all walks of life. This quality bleeds into his work, where he skillfully blends the production of high-end photography and pure joy. When you shoot with Anton, you’ve probably done some of your best work and also had a blast.

Listening to Anton’s story, it’s easy to understand how he fostered a love for photography and became a true citizen of the world. Anton was born in Melbourne, Australia, and by the time he was 10 he believed he was going to be a graphic artist. Anton got his creative knack from his family; his dad drew, painted and played the piano. His grandfather had a passion for photography. When Anton turned 12, he gave him his first camera. Once his grandfather taught him the technical aspects of photography, Anton was hooked. Photography wasn’t available as a school subject, so everything he learned then was pretty much self-taught. At 16 Anton left high school for a four-year photography course. He gained valuable work experience as an assistant at a wedding portrait studio and also

worked at a one-hour mini-lab processing photos. After completing his course, he went on to work full-time as an assistant at a fashion catalog studio. This was the ‘90s, and the photography in fashion magazines like Vogue or Vanity Fair fueled his inspiration. Photographers Nick Knight, Bruce Weber, Helmut Newton and Craig McDean pushed technical and creative boundaries at every opportunity. Anton wanted to shoot just like them. The most influential fashion and advertising photographers of that time shot primarily in London, New York and Paris. Anton and his then-girlfriend, Mardi (now his wife), decided to travel, see the world and relocate to London so he could pursue his dream of becoming a fashion photographer. They traveled through Malaysia,

Thailand, Hong Kong and Scotland. After many adventures, they decided to settle in and pursue the photography dream. They found a tiny studio apartment in a newspaper ad and made London home. Both Anton and Mardi worked together behind the bar of a local London pub until they were able to find more stable work. Mardi found a job as a legal secretary. Anton took to the streets knocking on photographer’s doors—trying to get a gig—while Mardi supported them financially. Eventually Anton got work as a studio assistant, paying a meager 35 pounds for a 16-hour workday. The work was difficult, but the experience opened the door for him to assist some big-time photographers. Travel would become a recurring theme in his life as he flew back and forth to Paris as an assistant for Vogue or on various music-related shoots. He even got to work with the queen

“If you don’t challenge yourself, you don’t get better.” of supermodels at that time, Kate Moss. During this period Anton built his fashion portfolio doing test shoots with various people. Before the industry went digital, a printed fashion portfolio was very expensive to produce. To pay for it, he took a job at a car magazine. He loved cars, so he figured, “Why not?” “Shooting cars from a fashion background

was very different at the time,” he shares. “I had no preconceived notions of how you are supposed to shoot a car, and that’s actually what gave me my break. Before I knew it I was traveling the world shooting cars. One week I would be traveling across America as the main photographer for a travel story for a car, and then the next week I would be in Paris for French Vogue as a photographer’s assistant. Soon the car projects took over, and I became known as a car photographer.” As the work kept rolling in, Anton realized he needed an agent. He nabbed his first advertising job with Mercedes at 27—young to be shooting a campaign of that magnitude. He laughs, “On one set the client asked the producer where the photographer was because they assumed I was the assistant.” While in London, Anton and Mardi became parents to their son, Luca. When he was just 7 months old, they decided they were ready

53

for a new chapter and a new environment. They loved their time in London, but Anton had to frequently travel to L.A. where the car industry had a large presence. After a while it just made sense to move to the place he was shooting most, and they found the outdoor, laid-back lifestyle of the South Bay similar to how they were raised in Australia. Anton ventured into car photography wholeheartedly, bringing a unique sense of style and story to a part of the industry that hadn’t thought of that way before. Over the next 20 years Anton would become known as THE car photographer. His long automotive client list includes Acura, Amtrak, Arconic, BMW, Buick, Mercedes, Ford, Mazda, Hyundai, Bentley, Tesla, Renault, Aston Martin, Infiniti, Cadillac, Lincoln, Chevrolet, Jeep, Land Rover, Jaguar, Nissan, Subaru and VW. Although Anton’s path to shooting cars

54

SOUTHBAY | MAY/JUNE 2019

happened accidentally, he thinks that in hindsight his career path has been the right one because his love for car photography is definitely stronger than his love for fashion. “I really believe you have to love what you do in order to be really good at it.” Anton’s most recent award was from the prestigious Tokyo International Foto Awards in 2018 for his photography in The Book, produced for Aston Martin cars. Anton felt honored to be named alongside some of the biggest photographers in the world, including the greats Nick Knight and John Rankin. Each photographer, about 10 in all, has a chapter in the book. Anton is now transitioning into doing more directing and motion work. At the time of writing, Anton is off to Cape Town for Lexus and then to Dubai for Ferrari. He works with producers and teams from all over the world, and over the

years they have become great friends. He attributes most of what he has learned to the time he spent assisting others and to trial and error on the job. Even with all the success and acclaim, he believes he is still learning and being challenged. “If you don’t challenge yourself, you don’t get better,” he says. “I love my work, and I always want to be creative.” And without the steadfast support of his wife, Anton says he could have never done it. Ever the designer and artist, Anton recently completed the build of his and Mardi’s stunning modern home in Hermosa Beach. The lifestyle of the Beach Cities is a welcome refuge from the hustle of traveling the world with his work. “One day I will retire, sit on a beach and drink rosé all day,” he says. “But I will never stop taking pictures. It’s just too much fun.” ■

Mrs. Clean

Teresa King Dinneen wants you to organize your life … with style. WRITTEN BY TANYA MONAGHAN | PHOTOGRAPHED BY ALEX CLARK & JILL NEIL

You know the feeling when everything in your home is perfectly organized, beautifully in place and completely uncluttered? Me neither. That is, until I recently went on a cleanse … of the spaces I live in. For me it started out as way to keep busy (guilt-free) while procrastinating on the other, less pleasant household chores we all have. But I was completely surprised by the joyful feeling being organized gave me—I felt cleaner, more peaceful. It was like all the stuff I was needlessly collecting was also somehow clogging my mind. Suddenly I was relieved and free. Most of us, if we’re honest, just have too much stuff. If you are like me, you hold on to things you don’t need or use (“You never know, I might need it some day”). We cram things in closets and squeeze stuff in our garages where no one else can see, but the truth is that we know it’s there. It not only clutters our living spaces; it clutters our minds. People claim that getting rid of “the stuff” has a detoxifying effect, makes them feel lighter and gives them a greater appreciation for the things they do have. You may have noticed the recent trend to “declutter” and live a more simple life gaining popularity in the media. OK, so getting organized is an easy sell right? But who’s got the time—or skill—to pull it all off with our busy lifestyles? How many of us dream of leaving our disorganized homes in the morning and returning to a perfectly organized, Pinterest-like home in the afternoon? Teresa King Dinneen, a local South Bay mama of two, asked those same questions and turned her inherent OCD tendencies into a thriving business. Teresa, raised in Northern California, left the shores of Lake Tahoe for the beaches of L.A. in her early 20s. She met her South Bayborn-and-raised husband a few years later and has called it home ever since. Teresa gained a strong foundation in the fashion arena after working in sales for more than 15 years, collaborating with highly renowned brands such as Quicksilver, JBrand

56

SOUTHBAY | MAY/JUNE 2019

and Toms. The traveling grind of fashion sales—in addition to being the mother of two little ones—eventually overwhelmed her, so she went on the lookout for something that worked better for her and her family. It was after the umpteenth time she helped style one of her friends and organized another’s closets that she realized there was a real demand for what she was doing. She decided to go out on her own, and through

I do something deeper than just clean up. I help my clients learn ways to keep it going after I leave in a way that fits for them. My goal is to make it easy and sustainable for the family after I leave.” word of mouth she managed to build a fantastic client base. Soon her company, Lifestyle(d), was officially born. “I never realized that what I do isn’t normal—that organization doesn’t come naturally to everyone,” she shares. Lifestyle(d) wasn’t the first time she’d made money through organizing. “I was so into it from an early age that my mom would pay me to organize her drawers,” she remembers. Now one of her earliest talents has evolved into a thriving business. Just like the rooms she leaves behind, Teresa’s methods are clear, organized and practical. “I create personal systems that work for each of my clients,” she says. “That is the key to maintaining an organized home. I do something deeper than just clean up. I help my clients learn ways to keep it going after I leave in a way that fits for them. I don’t

want to just come in and organize everything only to be called back to do it again later. My goal is to make it easy and sustainable for the family after I leave.” Even the messiest of children can achieve order within the systems she creates. Her most popular request is creating an organized space for playrooms. She’s a fan of making labels so everyone knows where everything goes—simple but highly effective. There are systems for all areas of the house. One of the most useful systems deals with paper. Even in this digital age, we get inundated with paper daily—from bills to children’s schoolwork. Teresa helps create a proper place and filing system that prevents growing piles and stress. Like waving a wand, Teresa can tackle any room of the house and make the mess disappear. For closets, kitchens and playrooms, she needs the client to be there for purging purposes. She typically pulls everything out and categorizes the items. She isn’t going to have you hold each piece and ask you if it “sparks joy.” She just wants a simple yes or no. Once she knows what the client wants to keep, she gets to work organizing the space on her own. On average, Teresa can do a closet in three to four hours. Bigger projects and kitchens may require more time, cleaning and manpower. If you aren’t local and just need some guidance, Teresa also offers digital consults. All she needs is a photograph of the space and some measurements. She provides a drawing of the area illustrating exactly what to do and creates a shopping list with links to buy exactly what you need. Like Teresa, I’m a believer that less really is more; decluttering, purging and simplifying has a detoxifying effect and allows us to live our best lives with the things we care about most. Some of us feel like we are facing an unsurmountable task when looking at the current state of our “stuff.” Whether it is tackling a closet, a room or an entire house, the most valuable space Teresa creates is in your mind. ■

Finding Her Voice It was time for Veronica Torres to honor what she wanted to do … and that was music.

V

eronica Torres, also known as V, was born and raised in the South Bay. She grew up playing basketball, which became her life … so much so that she was on track to be a professional athlete. V was recruited to play basketball in college, but by the time she graduated high school she was burned out. “I wanted to experience college life without being married to a sport,” she says. So she stopped playing basketball, attended Loyola Marymount University (LMU) as a regular student and loved it. It was then that V picked up the guitar. It was also the first time in her life that she had free time to focus on something other than basketball. V grew up as a music lover, influenced by her parents’ impressive record collection of ’60s and ’70s rock ‘n’ roll. Although she learned how to play the guitar at the age of 10, sports dominated her life and she had no time to play music seriously. A break from sports while in college allowed her to play the guitar again. She picked up right where she had left off. She started writing her own songs and playing them at LMU’s open mic nights on campus. During that time there was a big movement of singer/songwriters playing all over L.A. that inspired her, including Jack Johnson, Jason Mraz and Tristan Prettyman. She started a rock band named Gorgeous Got a Gun and managed to do the whole “singer/songwriter thing” for a few years. She released an album and a few singles and learned a lot. A surprising early career path for a future musician, V graduated LMU with a degree in accounting and became an auditor. She worked an intense 70 hours a week as a controller for a firm. In search of more flexibility to focus on her music, V took a different job for a hedge fund but in time found herself again burning the candle at both ends. After nine years of working full-time while also playing with her band, she decided she needed to give herself the best opportunity to really pursue her passion for music. “I always thought I had to work ‘just in case,’” she says. “I don’t regret my work experience at all. I learned a lot and experienced many life lessons, but I finally reached that point of having enough self-belief to know I can and should pursue the things I really love.” V worked hard and saved enough money to feel comfortable quitting her job and

focusing on her music. She also went deeper into her yoga practice and joined a teaching program. “Yoga really helped me find some balance and change my life,” she says. “I have always been an anxious person, but yoga has always helped me get out of my head. It takes you so far inward—it’s like putting yourself under a microscope and breaking down all your walls. I had painted a picture of what my life should be and what I thought I really wanted. I just realized I was working toward goals that I didn’t even want. It was time for me to honor the present moment and honor what I wanted to do, and that was music.” After quitting her job and beginning yoga training classes, V decided to go on a songwriting retreat. Since that inspiring experience, V began creating music more authentically. She wrote different types of songs and eventually changed her band name from Gorgeous Got a Gun to her own name, V. Torres. “That’s really who I am,” she says. “I am all about sharing myself—the authentic me—and not who people think I should be.” V’s live performances also began to include a few other musicians, which organically evolved into an all-girl band. Although she writes and records her own music, she also co-writes songs with other artists. She writes regularly with a friend in New York and one in Nashville. “I just love to write and help other artists cultivate themselves.” At the end of 2017, V released an EP called “Real Life Love.” The songs illustrate a vision for human connectivity that she feels is often lacking today. “I feel that my music has matured while continuing to effectively convey my experiences and emotions,” she says. “The end result blends distinct guitar tones with soulful, truthful vocals and lyrics reminiscent of Mazzy Star and early Sheryl Crow. I hope to reach people and inspire them to live their life to the fullest through my new music.” In 2018 V released two more singles and recently debuted another this year called “Top of the Road.” And she has another passion project called Girl Crush: a vision to create an all-female music art showcase in the South Bay for those who love music and creating art. “I want Girl Crush to support and nurture women in music,” she explains. “I want it to showcase a community of artists, producers, engineers, management and labels to make the music world a little smaller, friendlier and more accessible.”

“I am all about sharing myself—the authentic me—and not who people think I should be.”

She launched her vision to great acclaim in August last year at Saint Rocke in Hermosa Beach. She believes it opened the door to other people doing something similar and will collaborate with them to do even bigger shows. The goal is to grow the project with the objective of presenting these amazing all-girl showcases to more and more people. There have been difficult times too. V went through a divorce a few years ago that was excruciatingly painful. V and her ex-husband had been together for 11 years and found themselves wanting different things and following different paths in life. Although hard, those experiences were also important for her creatively. “I’ve been through a lot of highs and lows in the past few years, and what I learned is the importance of digging yourself in and out of those places,” she says. “I wrote a lot

70

SOUTHBAY | MAY/JUNE 2019

during that difficult time. Everything was breaking down—my job, my partner in life— but I kept on going and writing and recording, and I am in a way better place now.” She continues, “It’s funny to think that had we not split, I don’t think either of us would be at the place we are now. We are much happier and are on good terms. We genuinely wish the best for each other. I created three new songs during that time, which was cathartic for me. I needed that. I wanted to share that part of my life experience in the hopes that it may touch and help people who are going through something similar.” V feels her music turning in a new direction and is really excited about where it’s going. “‘Top of the Road’ is about the point in life when you have gone through a hard time and then gain perspective coming out of it. It’s about not necessarily understanding that

feeling but just allowing yourself to feel.” She released more songs before the Redondo Beach BeachLife Festival in early May, where she performed alongside some greats such as Willie Nelson, Bob Weir, Jason Mraz, Violent Femmes, Ziggy Marley and Brian Wilson. V lives in Hermosa Beach but plays all over Los Angeles, Orange County and San Diego. She has plans to expand her gigs to Oregon and the Pacific Northwest. Creating the music events herself allows her to become more connected with people rather than “just touring.” She wants to keep creating, writing and working with other people as much as she can. “Art, for me, is about giving back,” she says. “If I can create something that helps someone in some way, then I am doing what I am meant to do.” ■

Well-Received

With Manhattan Beach-based 8th and Meadows, the gift becomes personal again. WRITTEN BY TANYA MONAGHAN | PHOTOGRAPHED BY CORINNE RUSHING

In a time of artificial connections, anonymous likes and bland brown boxes on your doorstep, Kristina Durkin has the made the art of giving special and convenient. In 2017 she started 8th and Meadows Gift Co. (8thmeadows.com), an online service where customers can choose from a carefully curated collection of chic, quality items for a number of themed gifting occasions. The gift is sent and beautifully presented to the recipient in an elegant black box along with a handwritten note. Knowing Kristina’s background, it’s not surprising she has an eye for making things look beautiful. Though she taught for 10 years in the inner school district of Los Angeles, Kristina felt a pull toward fashion. She attended fashion school at night at FIDM while teaching during the day, graduating with a degree in apparel manufacturing management.

72

SOUTHBAY | MAY/JUNE 2019

She landed a job as a visual merchandiser for Hugo Boss in Beverly Hills, which gave her the perfect grounding in style and class. Now living in Manhattan Beach, she finds inspiration in the laid-back South Bay lifestyle. Kristina says gifting is her love language. When she buys a gift for someone, a lot of thought and care goes into it. She enjoys not only the gifting process but also the packaging and how it is presented, which she thinks is just as important. It was while investing her usual care into gift shopping for a friend that an idea dawned on her. “Wouldn’t it be great if there was a one-stop gift shop for all occasions: birthday, thank-you, new baby and housewarming?” she thought. “Wouldn’t it be even better if I didn’t have to drive around town to find just the right gift, didn’t have to wrap the present and then ship it? I would love it!” Kristina’s husband handles the business

side of things while she takes on all the creative aspects for the company. She chooses not to limit her shopping only to “gift shows.” Rather she finds fun things just about anywhere, keeping her selections unique and personal. The gifting range stays dynamic because she is constantly inspired by new ideas on her travels. She gravitates to things that she would like to receive herself and likes the idea of the gift box evolving and changing. Kristina found her clients’ feedback so positive and valuable that she initiated a referral and rewards programs as a thank-you and to encourage repeat customers. But when she hears how much the gift recipient loved it, she feels the reward is her own. Kristina’s aim is to make the gift as personal as possible for her clients, even adding the special touch of a handwritten note customized by the giver. The personal touch is still a timeless classic. Although 8th and Meadows can be a handy option, Kristina seeks to give us the connection we miss in our busy, digital lives. “The time, thought and care that goes into putting these gifts together is something that you just can’t get online at some major retailer,” she shares. “When I personalize gifts and write out the gift notes, I really feel that sense of connection and community. I hope whoever receives the gift gets to feel that too.” ■

TERRANEA AT TEN A peek into the legendary resort— one decade in the making. WRITTEN BY AMBER KLINCK

T

his year marks Terranea Resort’s 10-year anniversary. For a resort of Terranea’s caliber, however, a decade is just a single milestone on the timeline. Terranea—with its classic architecture, mature landscape and welcoming culture— feels timeless. There’s an ageless quality to what Terranea values … an ode to the simple pleasures mastered with the highest level of excellence. There is the food, the service, the incredible surroundings, of course, but also a deep appreciation for the natural habitat that surrounds them, a sense of duty and respect for their team and community that’s embraced them, and a genuine confidence that Terranea is achieving something truly exceptional. These are just a few things that make the resort feel beyond its years. If you’ve driven along the curve of the coast leading up to Terranea, felt your stress melt away and your senses elevate, it might be hard to imagine the Palos Verdes Peninsula without the 102-acre oceanside resort. But there was a time when this stunning piece of land had a different set of occupants—even a period of vacancy—before the vision of Terranea became a reality. From the indigenous Gabrielino-Tongva Tribe and the 1542 Spanish occupation of the Peninsula by Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo to the 16,000-acre private land purchase by Frank A. Vanderlip in 1913, the land has been home to seafarers, fishermen, Japanese farmers and Hollywood’s elite. In 1954 it was Marineland of the Pacific’s turn. The oceanarium— once the largest in the world—remained an attraction until closing its doors in 1987. With Marineland out of operation, the Peninsula was essentially abandoned until Lowe Enterprises took interest in 1998, breaking ground on the project in June 2007. Putting together the pieces to bring Terranea to life was a tremendous undertaking. It was a true collaboration working with the

California Coastal Commission as well as the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy. Every effort was made to ensure the design of the resort was compatible with the land and that everything was sustainable. It was important that the natural habitat on the peninsula not only be preserved, but flourish. Of the resort’s 102 acres, 75% of the property is green space with 12 acres of restored native habitat. “It’s not just a part of the habitat,” Terranea’s President Terri A. Haack says. “It’s part of our story.” All of the mature trees were boxed during construction and replanted, giving the illusion that the buildings were built around the trees. During construction, Terranea had an on-site quarry providing 90,000 tons of material to build the resort. Plus 750,000 yards of earth were moved within the property; thus no land was removed. And 75% of materials from the former structures were recycled and used throughout the resort. These three measures alone saved thousands of truck trips and corresponding carbon emissions. “In the last two months there were as many as 800 workers finishing the project,” Terri notes. “We went from one employee, me, to now almost 1,300. And we have about 160 associates from that first day who are still here.” The longevity of so many initial team members speaks volumes to the internal culture of the resort. “Terranea enables people to have a life and a career,” Terri says. This translates into an environment that values life outside work and promotes internal growth. In other words, associates don’t have to choose between having a family and having a career. “My personal goal is to help further women in our industry,” Terri says, “to make sure women can have harmony in their personal lives and and a fulfilling career.” Pairing an immensely talented and passionate team with an empowering work environment is a winning combination—and one the guests can feel. “Our culture has always been one of compassion and benevolence,” explains Terranea’s chief strategy officer and executive vice president Agnelo A. Fernandes. “It’s about people— understanding who our guests are, why they’ve chosen to experience Terranea to enhance their life’s journey.” Through the introduction of Terranea Proud, an internal philosophy that ties every action back to a deeply held sense of pride, the objective is clear: “Our mission is to seek to deliver extraordinary moments.” At this 10-year milestone, the team at Terranea finds themselves filled with gratitude—toward their fellow team members, their valued guests and the community that’s embraced them. So what’s next? “I want to make sure we continue to add value to our community,” Terri says. “Through programs like Chefs to End Hunger and the resort’s continued conservation efforts, Terranea’s value to Southern California is evident.” “I also believe that we will take our place as an iconic resort; that’s what we want to be,” says Terri. “We always knew and felt strongly about this resort being the next big thing in our industry,” Agnelo adds. Resting on a stunning piece of land with breathtaking views of the Pacific, there’s no questioning the destination’s allure. But Terranea is more than just a location to its visitors. It’s become a state of mind … a feeling. Heading to Terranea evokes a sense of soulful indulgence— that’s what makes a legendary destination. It’s not so much where you go, but how you feel when you get there. Meet the Talent These are the faces behind the South Bay’s style trends. Let’s get better acquainted, shall we?

ORLANDO NOVOA OWNER KALIHI REDONDO BEACH

“Tanya captured the look our store conveys: coastal style that is soft, breezy, relaxed and casual. ‘So cute’ is what we hear most often about our clothing. It’s important to me that we are in line with the current West Coast trend—fabrics that breathe and include competing colors, fun prints, flowy or comfortable silhouettes with minimal fuss, and clothing easily worn all day and night.”

MELISSA VARON WEINBERG THIRD GENERATION MORGAN’S JEWELERS TORRANCE

“Today’s look is all about making it your own. Pairing together your signature pieces can sometimes be tricky. The key to achieving your own effortless yet polished look is to find the perfect balance between delicate and bold, mixing metals, textures and colored stones to create a more interesting look. Start with three pieces at a time and remember: The most important thing is to have fun with your jewelry.”

Creatures of Habitat Long before Terranea’s arrival, the Palos Verdes Peninsula created an ideal home for indigenous plants and rare insects and mammals. Discover how the resort protects its precious flora and fauna for generations to come. WRITTEN BY AMBER KLINCK PHOTOGRAPHED BY JEFF BERTING

T

he air is uncommonly rich with moisture, and the plant life on the Peninsula is grateful for it. Verdant leaves and vibrant blooms line the walking trails at Terranea. The scent of fresh rosemary, coastal sage and the sweet aroma of natal plum vie for your attention. Standing near the trail’s edge overlooking the Pacific, Lauren Bergloff gestures to the pelicans floating overhead and smiles. There was a time these birds were endangered, their numbers deeply depressed due to the pesticide DDT. “After the pesticide was made illegal the pelican numbers started coming back, and now we see them every day,” she says. Lauren is the sustainability leader at Terranea. She is friendly with an infinite amount of knowledge and respect for her Southern California surroundings. She beams when she talks about the wildlife on the property, detailing their characteristics—colors, scents, textures—with a fond appreciation. Her favorite scent emits from coastal sage. “It smells like a spa,” she says. The color is mint-like … soft and delicate to the touch due to the rain. In the fall it will take on a different texture. One of her favorite words is crepuscular. She points this out as she explains that the cottontail bunnies found on the resort are most active during dawn and dusk. She even has a favorite succulent: the Zwartkop. The contrast between the Zwartkop’s brilliant yellow bloom and its deep purple leaves is striking. They proudly posture their beauty—despite requiring minimal care to flourish. Terranea is filled with these juxtapositions. It is beauty paired with sustainability. Its design is effortless yet meticulously mindful. Out of the resort’s 102 acres, 75% of the property is greenspace, with 12 acres of

92

SOUTHBAY | MAY/JUNE 2019

restored native habitat. From its origin, Terranea has partnered with the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy. “All of these native plants are from them,” Lauren says. “A drip irrigation system was [introduced] to make sure the plants were established, but now that they are— and because they’re native plants— there’s no need to water them.” Re-establishing some of the Peninsula’s native greenery is not only environmentally conscious and esthetically pleasing; it’s enabled dwindling populations of wildlife to thrive. The El Segundo blue butterfly is tiny and delicate. Its wings flaunt a dusty blue hue when open, a soft grey with a touch of orange when closed. A federally endangered species, the El Segundo blue butterfly can only be found in the South Bay. Terranea’s cultivation of the coast buckwheat, a plant the El Segundo blue needs to survive, has successfully attracted the butterfly to the property— contributing to its survival. Not all of the plants at Terranea are native. The three species of hummingbirds found on the Peninsula—the Rufous, the Allen’s and the Anna’s—flirt with the flowers blooming from the birds of paradise. The coral trees that remained after the 1986 closure of Marineland of the Pacific—a seaside animal theme park that once resided on the grounds—were salvaged and redistributed around the resort. When in bloom, the trees fill with vibrant coral-colored flowers. But while not every plant has Californian roots, the climate of their origin mirrors that of the Peninsula, minimizing their imprint on the resort’s resources. “There are not a lot of places [in Los Angeles] that aren’t developed,” Lauren says. “We’re trying to bring plants back that will help the native species.” As the California bush sunflower starts to bloom, the region ignites with yellow

blossoms, and it becomes clear that we too benefit from Terranea’s preservation efforts. There is a sense of tranquility that ensues—an inherent feeling of balance that arises when surrounded by such natural beauty. And it’s not exclusive. The hiking trails on the Peninsula are open to the public; Lauren leads daily 10 a.m. nature walks for anyone looking to learn more about the flora and fauna that surrounds them. Additional education opportunities are available through the resort’s falconry program and guided coastal walks. Joe Roy III drapes a towel over the large glass plaque located near an open area of the resort. “He might come through at speed,” he says. “We’ll see what happens.” He has one of his male falcons, Shaman, flying high above the resort. “He’s one of my favorite birds to fly here. He’s super-visual.” High over our heads, Joe spots Shaman—a mere speck in the sky. Holding a small leather bag, roughly the size of a human’s fist and attached to a long strap, Joe begins to whip the bag in large circular motions. Shaman sees this and in a flash darts toward the sea. At least it appears so, until with great speed he makes his descent—landing on Joe’s arm with complete control. The experience is humbling … the power of this bird of prey on full display. He is beautiful and curiously exciting to watch, but Shaman too plays an important role at Terranea. He is a working bird. “It’s all about ecology,” Joe points out. “We didn’t always understand the role predators played. We frankly thought they were kind of extraneous. Eventually we began to understand predators play a more instrumental role in this whole balance thing.” Joe has been working with birds for roughly 40 years; he was fortunate to discover his passion early on in his childhood. With his English pointer, Henry, by his side,

Joe has been flying his predatory birds over the Peninsula for the past four years. Before falconry came to Terranea, the area was highly colonized by seagulls. As a protected migratory species, falconry was introduced to remedy the area’s abundance of gulls by incorporating the intimidation of a predator native to the area. But the role of Joe and his birds has evolved. The presence of these stunning

94

SOUTHBAY | MAY/JUNE 2019

creatures patrolling the resort is captivating. When people see them they flock to Joe, peppering him with questions about his extraordinary animals. And Joe, with his wealth of knowledge, is filled with answers. These are animals with speeds of 70 to 100 miles per hour on a flat plain. They’ve been clocked at 242 miles per hour on a vertical dive. Everything about these birds evokes a sense of wonder and certainly a deep

respect. And Joe’s relationship with them enables him to offer the rest of us a glimpse into their world. “At 11 a.m. I do a bird show here,” Joe says. “Anybody that wants to show up can come and learn more about the birds.” Joe also offers an hour-long intimate falconry experience for those who are looking for a more in-depth encounter. Owlbert, another one of Joe’s birds, is a

Eurasian eagle owl. Joe doesn’t hunt with Owlbert; his role is purely educational. The relationship Joe has with his falcons is professional and cordial, built on respect. He has affection for them, but the feeling is not mutual. They trust him, and that is good enough for Joe. Owlbert is different. He was 18 days old when he came to live with Joe. “He is an imprint of mine,” Joe says. “Imprinting makes

them super-tame and affectionate, but it also makes them kind of vulnerable.” With Owlbert perched on his arm, Joe points out that the glove he’s wearing in reality offers little protection from the bird’s large talons. “The strength of the owl is formidable. This [glove] is elk; he could drill through this like warm butter. You’d be shocked if you knew how strong these feet are.” The feathers of an owl are soft. “Softer

equals sound reduction,” Joe explains. “This is ambush predation. Once they get their talons locked on, getting away is unlikely.” As Joe describes the power of the bird resting on his arm, Owlbert’s large orange eyes are locked on mine. He seems pleased as Joe lists his accolades, and I am grateful to not be on his menu. Before I leave Joe asks if I’d like to take a selfie with Owlbert, and of course I do. ■

Katelyn Ctvrtlik brings her favorite fitness practice to Hermosa Beach. WRITTEN BY TANYA MONAGHAN PHOTOGRAPHED BY NATALIE SCHUTT

Imagine you could grow 1½ inches taller. That’s what Californian blue-eyed beauty Katelyn Ctvrtlik claims happened to her as a result of the GYROTONIC® Method. GYROTONICS is a little known, original and unique movement method that addresses the entire person—opening energy pathways, stimulating the nervous system, increasing range of motion, and improving strength and movement efficiency. It’s the method of movement and exercise currently being devoured by celebrities and elite athletes as they strive for the most effective and natural methods to stay in shape and promote peak performance. Health and fitness has long been a way of life for Katelyn too, and athletics run in her blood. Her mother was a professional dancer, and her father and uncle were both athletes. But putting her body under strain growing up as a dancer also meant she would often injure herself, and she had to do many cycles of physical therapy over the years. One day her dad suggested she do Pilates and GYROTONICS as a means to protect her body from being injured. She started Pilates at the young age of 16, and she instantly “fell in love.” When she was in high school, she managed to convince her instructor to give her a key to the studio so she could just go in and practice. She continued to dance but just knew that Pilates and GYROTONICS was the career path she was going to follow. The GYROTONIC Expansion System® Method was created by Hungarian professional dancer Juliu Horvath. He suffered a series of debilitating injuries during his dance career and began developing these methods as a way to heal and regain strength and agility. GYROTONIC classes are designed to take the body beyond current limitations to show what we can do if we stretch ourselves. People come out of a GYROTONIC class with

increased freedom of movement, greater strength and more agility. Athletes see improved performance. Rehabilitation clients recover quicker and more fully post-injury. The method is practiced in group or private classes under the instruction of a qualified trainer. The exercises are performed on custom-designed GYROTONIC equipment and feature spiraling, circular movements that flow together seamlessly in rhythmic repetitions. These carefully crafted sequences create balance, agility, strength and flexibility. The unique system simultaneously stretches and strengthens the body with minimal effort while increasing range of motion and developing coordination. Katelyn was also one of the youngest teachers of GYROTONIC at the time. She started teaching Pilates and GYROTONICS at the age of 19 after spending countless hours getting certified. She even taught while she was attending the University of Boulder, where she studied dance and psychology. She loved every minute of the learning and teaching process because she loves connecting with people, instructing them and getting them stronger. Fate stepped in one day when a connection of hers from Boulder told her about a studio named Pilates Place in the South Bay looking for an instructor. At the time, Katelyn was planning to move back to Long Beach but was willing to do the commute back and forth to Hermosa Beach. She was actually working at six different studios at the time trying to build a clientele and figure out where she wanted to be. She fell in love with the South Bay lifestyle and decided to make it home. Noticing the GYROTONIC method was not readily accessible in the area, Katelyn saw an opportunity to introduce it to the South Bay. In 2015 an opportunity opened for her to buy the studio business. Ever since,

she has offered the GYROTONIC Expansion System® in her studio. With GYROTONIC exercises, each movement flows into the next, allowing the joints to move through a natural range of motion without jarring or compression. Where Pilates is linear, GYROTONICS is spiraling. Katelyn describes it as a very natural fluid movement that feels almost animalistic in nature. It gives you the tools to move your spine in all the ways it’s supposed to move. It’s also the perfect complement to any other workout.

Take the body beyond its current limitations— beyond what we can do if we stretch ourselves.”

And the secret is getting out. There are a few more GYROTONIC studios popping up, and some major celebrities such as Sting and Lady Gaga are already hooked. Shaquille O’Neal got his own equipment made and customized for his size so he can work it into his weekly regime. Out of the studio, Katelyn works with many of the LA Kings hockey players, some NFL athletes and golfers. “This past summer I set a goal to become more flexible so I could take my game on the ice to the next level,” says Jack Campbell, the LA Kings goalie. “After working with Katelyn for only a week I could already see the difference on the ice with my core strength and flexibility.” Katelyn can’t promise you’ll get taller, but increased balance, agility, strength and flexibility all sound like great reasons to get hooked. ■

Holding Court This coastal colonial-inspired Manhattan Beach home offers a few playful surprises. WRITTEN BY DARREN ELMS PHOTOGRAPHED BY JAIMIE SOLANO

A

lthough she grew up in Southern California with an abundance of Spanish-style stucco walls and tile roofs, Helen Underhill dreamed of a colonial home. “I was drawn to something different,” she shares. When she and her family acquired a narrow lot on 29th Street in Manhattan Beach, she knew her architect, Mark Trotter, would have to get creative to achieve her vision. “We met with Mark almost every week for six months,” Helen shares. “He was very open to our ideas, as well as providing us with his own guidance and input. We are extremely detail-oriented and gave Mark a five-page list of our ‘wish list’ items. It was a long list, but Mark was able to squeeze it all in and make efficient use of every inch of our buildable space.” Custom-built in 2018, the beautiful two-story home showcases a stunning combination of traditional design and modern flair. Mark achieved the colonial look with white wood siding, multi-paneled windows with black shutters, and an eye-catching decorative entrance with columns and a triangular pediment. The home also enjoys a coastal vibe with porthole windows. Inside, Jennifer Allison’s thoughtful design brings together a navy, blue, grey and white color scheme with occasional red accents. The home includes a cozy living room with textured wallpaper and a showstopping kitchen full of bucket-list appliances. Floor-toceiling pocket doors exemplify that desired California indoor/outdoor living. Outside the family enjoys a perfectly designed swim jet pool, Jacuzzi, drizzle wall and fire features. One of the more unusual elements of the home is the indoor basketball court in the basement. “When we were looking at the layout of the basement, Mark explained that nowadays the basement can go under the garage,” Helen says. “We looked at that space on the plans and Mark said, ‘You know, the ceilings under the garage will be 15 feet high. You could have a basketball court in there.’ We all laughed and then looked at each other and said, ‘Let’s do it!’” While she doesn’t think her 9- and 11-year-old kids will aspire to become basketball stars, Helen loves having a dedicated space in the house for them to get their energy out. After winning a signed Magic Johnson jersey at a P.S. I Love You Foundation fundraiser, the room suddenly became home to other basketball treasures. “When the vendor was delivering the Magic jersey to our house, he let us know that he also had Shaq and Kobe signed jerseys,” she says. “All of a sudden I could envision a wall in the basketball court with all the various famous jerseys to make it even more special.” Want to see it in person? The home will be part of the 45th annual Sophisticated Snoop Home Tour, benefiting American Martyrs School, on May 17–19 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. To reserve your tickets, visit americanmartyrsschool.org. ■

South Bay siblings spin and sing for a cancer cure.

SOUTHBAY | MAY/JUNE 2019

After losing their loved ones to cancer, teen Manhattan Beach brothers Robbie Knowles and Dylan Knowles decided to take matters into their own hands to combat the disease that took their aunt, godmother and cousin. The Mira Costa High School students decided to pen, record and produce a song/video, “We’ll Never Stop Fighting,” to remember those who have passed and to celebrate those who have won the battle against cancer. Little did they know at the time that the song they wrote would grow to become popular and a favorite of many. Proceeds from the song are being donated to cancer organizations. The Knowles brothers are using their exceptional musical talents to fight a disease that has taken too many lives. While making the video, the brothers visited more

than a dozen cancer survivors throughout the community … some were featured in the video. It was a humbling and eye-opening experience that gave Robbie and Dylan a glimpse into many cancer patients’ rocky and uncertain journeys. Becoming music superstars is not high on either of the boys’ lists of career choices, but becoming professional baseball players certainly ranks at the top, as their father was a minor league player. No matter what career they choose, they will continue to fight to beat cancer. Both Robbie and Dylan will be riding at the seventh annual Tour de Pier on Sunday, May 19 at the Manhattan Beach Pier. If there’s a lesson to be learned, it is no matter how old you are, you can use your skills and talent to make a difference. ■

Dogs have that power to make everyone around them radiate.”

SOUTHBAY | MAY/JUNE 2019

The end of a messy relationship caused Carrie Cramer to truly fall in love with “man’s best friend”—her dog, Atticus. Atticus was a gift she received just a few weeks before that relationship ended, and every morning for months afterwards Carrie forced herself to get up, walk the dog and try to be upbeat and positive for her new puppy. Now she says, “I am the happiest I’ve ever been, and I couldn’t have done it without him.” It would be years later that Atticus would again inspire Carrie, a costume designer and graduate in fine arts from USC, to pour her soul into something positive and uplifting: a customized jewelry line for animal lovers. Carrie has always been creative. After graduating from college, she landed a job in the art department at MTV and took to it like a duck to water—building a very successful career as an L.A.based stylist dressing celebrities, musicians and TV personalities. Though the production world can be intense and demanding, she loved it. But 14-hour days and tons of travel put a strain on having a life outside work. After meeting her now-husband Rich and making a move to the South Bay, she decided to slow down a bit. This was a new place, a new beginning, and she felt inspired to create something fresh and different. As a jewelry lover and collector, she focused her artistic talents on creating a high-end jewelry line that celebrated the love of Atticus. The idea first came to her from two great prints she got from Crate & Barrel (one was of a Frenchie and the other a schnauzer), which she thought would make a great silhouette for a necklace. Within a month she had hired a graphic designer and figured out the rest on her own. “Dogs have that power to make everyone around them radiate,” she says. “That’s exactly what I hope my debut line of necklaces will do: make women shine.” Carrie Cramer Fine Jewelry officially launched in 2016. Carrie sells direct to consumer through her website (carriecramer.com), and her handcrafted pieces can be found locally throughout Los Angeles. Because each piece is made to order, clients can customize and personalize their charm as they desire. The response so far has been overwhelmingly positive, with features in Aventura, Buzz Meter, the LA Times and Us Weekly. Carrie’s pieces also adorn celebrities such as Sharon Osbourne, Chelsea Handler and Carole Radziwill. She shares, “I hope my jewelry adds a bit of sparkle to people’s lives, just like Atticus did for me.” ■

Bon Dia, Barcelona Rebellious and romantic, the Catalan capital savors surprises. WRITTEN BY DARREN ELMS

O

n the surface one thing is clear: Barcelona does not play by the rules. You only need to step into the famously unfinished Sagrada Família, a piece of modern architecture so captivating and controversial that Pope Benedict XVI would only consecrate it as a minor basilica. Its visionary, Antoni Gaudí, put his artistic stamp on many sections of the city. And like his iconic mosaic sculptures, Barcelona pieces together an eclectic energy that is both vibrant and unexpected. The heart of the autonomous community of Catalonia, the Spanish metro proudly promotes its unique cultural identity and Catalan language. Following years of repression under the Franco regime, Barcelona has enjoyed a recent renaissance since hosting the 1992 Summer Olympic Games. It also distinguished itself as an epicenter for arts and architecture, promoting the talents of some of the city’s most celebrated residents including Pablo Picasso, Joan Miró and, of course, Gaudí. GETTING THERE Norwegian Airlines offers a direct flight to Barcelona on one of their jetlag-friendly Dreamliners. If you’re feeling fancy, you can book a cushy PremiumFlex seat at a reasonable price for the extra amenities. norwegian.com WHERE TO STAY Barcelona has numerous vibrant areas to explore, so it’s wise to stay somewhat central. Located steps from the fashionable Passeig de Gràcia, Almanac Barcelona offers a stylish and upscale experience from which to launch your daily adventures. The rooms come spacious and sleek, many with incredible views of the area. From the rooftop pool you can enjoy a 360º view of the city while sipping a cool glass of albariño. The hotel also features Línia, a Mediterranean brasserie serving culinary delights, where locals and travelers intersect from morning to night. almanachotels.com WHERE TO EAT Tapas are the favorite edible tradition of the residents of Barcelona. You’ll find plenty of these sharable plates throughout the city. But if you want to merge tapas with the ultimate culinary playground, then you need to reserve a table at Tickets. As the name implies, Chef Albert Adrià’s Michelin-star restaurant seeks to entertain, and it succeeds in that quest.

My meal started with a tomato iced tea served in a porcelain pot, saucer and cup with a savory tea bag garnish. Light, refreshing and smile-inducing, this liquid amuse bouche offered the prelude to an evening filled with bite-size masterpieces, cleverly presented and incredibly tasty. As a bonus, I was handed a special invitation to the separate dessert bar—think Willy Wonka meets Alice in Wonderland—and concluded my meal with a sweet send-off. Some places live up to the hype, and Tickets is one of them. elbarri.com WHAT TO DO If you find the tree-lined pedestrian thoroughfare to be unbearably crowded, as I did, head to the Gothic Quarter—Barcelona’s old city center—for window-shopping and people-watching. If you’re fortunate, antique vendors will set up their wares in front of the Cathedral of Barcelona. Around the evening hours gather with locals as they join hands for traditional Catalan song and dance. This plaza is also a great vantage point to view Picasso’s frieze atop the modern Collegi d’Arquitectes building. His museum is a short walk away, but be sure to reserve your ticket in advance. Picasso may be one of the art world’s most recognizable artists, but in Barcelona it is Gaudí who is most revered. You can view his art nouveau architecture at Casa Milà— his last private residential design. Though extraordinary from the outside, you can visit the building’s interior—from basement to terrace—through a ticketed tour. On the outskirts of the city you can meander through Parc Güell, a natural setting intermixed with the artist’s mosaic sculptures, serpentine shapes and colonnades hall. But the must-visit Gaudí attraction is the one he never saw to completion. Don’t let the cranes and construction discourage you from visiting. I’d argue that the ongoing activity only adds to the experience. The magnificent white columns and contours swim in colored lights from the stained glass windows, and awe-struck visitors try to capture that perfect photo. But take a moment to sit among the devoted at noon. That’s when a chorus of unseen nuns fills the church with their voices. A minor basilica? Hardly. ■

FINANCIAL SERVICES

SIGNATURE ESTATE & INVESTMENT ADVISORS, LLC

S

ignature Estate & Investment Advisors, LLC® (SEIA) is an independent Registered Investment Advisory firm offering wealth management and financial planning services to affluent individuals, families and business owners. SEIA and its affiliates manage more than $9.4 billion in client assets as of March 31, 2019. SEIA was recognized on the 2018 Financial Times 300 Top Registered Investment Advisers list, the 2018 Financial Advisor annual RIA list and the 2018 Los Angeles Business Journal list of largest money management firms ranked by assets managed. With a combined 50 years of wealth management experience, Vince DiLeva, Eric Pritz and Kathleen Adams are South Bay residents offering portfolio management, retirement planning, estate and legacy planning, as well as philanthropic and family foundation management. The three advisors have earned multiple advanced degrees and financial designations over the years. TELL US ABOUT YOUR NEW EXPANSION IN THE RIVIERA VILLAGE. “We opened our original South Bay office in the Riviera Village back in 2011. As we have been consistently growing our teams and services, we were in desperate need for additional space. Luckily we found a great location across the street with more than three times the square footage and a blank canvas to build the office as we always envisioned. Throughout this first year in the new offices we continue to receive great feedback on the aesthetic and the comfortable feel of the upgraded meeting and work environment. We look forward to serving the local communities for many more years in our new space.” WHO IS YOUR TYPICAL CLIENT? “We have a diverse client base, but most of our clients are successful professionals who have worked hard and saved well.

Our clients tend to be determined to live an active, fulfilling lifestyle and want to make sure their money is positioned so they can live life and not worry about day-to-day money management.” WHAT IS THE BIGGEST BENEFIT YOUR CLIENTS GAIN FROM WORKING WITH YOU? “We try to add ‘Advisor Alpha’ to every client relationship using a multitude of tools and strategies. A process identified by The Vanguard Group, Advisor Alpha takes a varied approach to wealth management on a client-by-client basis, rather than just making efforts to beat the market. Investors typically view portfolio performance versus the market or some arbitrary index as the best way to determine the worth of an advisor. Although hard to quantify, Vanguard believes advisors can add an additional three percentage points through advice on asset allocation, portfolio rebalancing, spending strategies for drawdowns, cost-effective investment guidance and behavioral counseling. We strongly believe in these principles, and our clients have benefited from this knowledge and expertise. We believe the guidance, peace of mind and discipline that we provide through behavioral coaching and understanding the tendencies of the emotional investor adds the most value over time (especially in times of crisis).” HOW IMPORTANT IS IT TO HAVE WELL-ESTABLISHED RELATIONSHIPS WITH LEGAL, TAX PLANNING AND OTHER PROFESSIONALS ON BEHALF OF YOUR CLIENTS? “As longtime South Bay residents and business owners, we have worked with and developed relationships with many local professionals. We ensure the seamless integration of all the components of your multifaceted financial life by serving as

quarterback amongst a collaborative team of CPAs, attorneys and other trusted advisors.” WHAT MAKES YOUR FIRM STAND OUT IN THIS INDUSTRY? “SEIA was established in 1997 with the sole idea of doing what’s best for the client. We have a long history of success that is tied to the stability of the firm, its advisors and more than 80 employees. Collaborating for more than two decades, our founding partners and advisors have laid a strong foundation with processes backed by the highest levels of education and professional accreditations.” HOW DO YOU GIVE BACK TO YOUR COMMUNITY? “Philanthropy is a long-standing pillar for SEIA. The SEIA Signature Fund for Giving helps support local youth foundations, Be The Match Foundation, LA25 Foundation for the Arts, Rotary and Mira Costa athletic support.” Disclaimer: Securities offered through Royal Alliance Associates, Inc., member FINRA/SIPC. GUZMAN LAW GROUP, PC DENISE M. GUZMAN, FOUNDER/PRINCIPAL ATTORNEY

TELL US ABOUT YOUR FIRM. Denise M. Guzman, Business and Estate Planning Attorney: “We are in the job of protecting people, and that role comes quite naturally to me. Guzman Law Group brings extensive experience and professionalism to every case. Our team is continuously evolving to better serve our clients, and we customize our support to each client’s specific needs and concerns. Whether I am representing a seller/buyer in the sale of a business or representing a trustee or beneficiary in the process of a trust administration, I know that the client is receiving the best possible advice because of my knowledge and my years of experience as an attorney.” WHAT IS UNIQUE ABOUT YOUR TEAM? Drew Hallett, Business and Litigation Attorney: “Our culture. When clients retain the Guzman Law Group, they are not just retaining one attorney at our firm. They are getting the whole team. We promote a

collaborative, team-building environment that emphasizes and encourages teamwork, communication and transparency.” Adnan Karama, Business Attorney: “One of the unique things about the firm is our diverse professional and personal backgrounds. Each member of the team is able to bring a personalized skillset that allows us to comprehensively assist our clients in all types of legal matters. By working jointly, Guzman Law Group is able to craft an optimal solution for our clients.” WHAT CURRENT TRENDS ARE YOU SEEING IN YOUR INDUSTRY? Denise M. Guzman: “Recently we have seen an increase in the private mergers and acquisitions market, primarily through strategic acquisitions. There are numerous private entities and equity firms that are willing and able to invest in various industries. Whether it is infusing money into a company or the outright buyout of the company, we navigate the structure of the deal so it is the most advantageous to our client. We have witnessed many strategic buyers make lucrative offers, however with some stringent legal terms attached to the future performance of the company being sold or the continued personal guarantee of the sellers on leases or loans—all of which can affect the final purchase price paid. Although the proposed purchase price may initially be enticing, we outline for the client the risk factors, balancing the monetary reward of the sale with potential future liabilities that the seller is consenting to as part of the sale. These factors may ultimately reduce the purchase price paid. We guide our clients and allow them the opportunity to make the most informed consent.”

WHAT IS YOUR SPECIALTY SERVICE? Edward Powell, Business Attorney: “As a business and finance attorney, I see clients of closely held businesses through the stages of corporate succession planning in order to ensure not just their own financial security but that the business they built can continue for the benefit of their family, employees and community. We have been through this process hundreds of times and can help owners prepare their businesses for this transition, including helping incentivize and retain key employees and negotiate and structure key agreements and sale documents to protect your business and wealth.” HOW DO YOU HELP PROTECT SENIOR CLIENTS? Marcus Chang, Business and Estate Planning Attorney: “We help protect our senior clients by making sure that their wishes are properly documented. If or when the unfortunate time arises where they are unable to care for themselves, a clear plan has been laid out as to who should be acting on their behalf—and what they should be doing on behalf of our client. In addition, the documentation provides security for the senior client’s beneficiaries, as it ensures that the assets of the client are properly managed and distributed to the proper beneficiaries.”

HARRIS FINANCIAL ADVISORS

H

arris Financial Advisors (HFA) has specialized in providing portfolio design and strategic wealth management to clients since 1992. HFA’s team spans five decades and three generations and includes advisors who are CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professionals and Chartered Financial Analyst® charterholders. Additionally, the firm has an advisor who is an Accredited Investment Fiduciary® designee and another who is a Certified Divorce Financial Analyst® professional. TELL US ABOUT THE CLIENTS YOU SERVE. “Every client comes to us with a unique situation and from a different walk of life. Our top priority is to give them simplicity and peace of mind in knowing their financial lives are taken care of—even those with complex needs. For example, when we work with women facing major, complicated life changes—such as divorce, widowhood or a career shift—we help them learn how to embrace transitions to uncover opportunities for financial growth and renewal. Our advisory team is made up of women who have not only helped other women address these issues but have faced them too.” HOW DO YOU HELP CLIENTS NAVIGATE THE SHIFT INTO RETIREMENT? “We specialize in serving clients who fall within the ‘50-forward’ age demographic, which encapsulates baby boomers and Gen-Xers who are preparing for retirement. We do our best to educate clients that retirement is more than just leaving the workforce. We focus on assessing their risks, managing their resources, projecting cash flows and stress-testing ‘what-if’ scenarios to develop a strategy that adapts to their goals and reflects what matters most to them in retirement.”

HOW DO YOU HELP CLIENTS WHO SERVE IN NONPROFIT ORGANIZATIONS? “Nonprofit leaders are incredibly passionate about the causes they support and their long-term vision, but there’s no question that the nonprofit path is filled with challenges. Organizations need to have a solid pool of financial assets earmarked to achieve their mission. They need to recruit and retain the right staff and volunteers. They need a solid investment strategy to fuel their purpose. And they need committed leadership capable of taking the organization to the next level. We help nonprofits address these needs by focusing on critical elements such as developing an effective investment policy statement, introducing cash management strategies to maximize financial reserves and designing the right investment portfolio to grow those funds over the long term.” TELL US ABOUT YOUR MOTTO “LESS WORRY, MORE TIME. YOUR FINANCIAL LIFE, SIMPLIFIED.” “Financial peace of mind is powerful. It brings a sense of confidence that can’t be entirely attributed to the number on your net worth statement or the size of your bank account. It comes from knowing that your life’s goals are attainable, feeling free from financial worries and having more time to devote to the things you care about most. This is what we strive to give our clients every day.” HOW DO YOU ENSURE THAT YOUR CLIENTS’ BEST INTERESTS ARE ALWAYS AT THE FOREFRONT? “There is one term that absolutely everyone must know when working with a financial advisor: ‘fiduciary.’ Advisors who are fiduciaries are bound by law to always place the interests of their clients ahead of all

others, to provide sound and transparent financial advice, to fairly disclose all material facts and to avoid or disclose conflicts of interest. The fiduciary duty is the highest standard of care within the financial world, and it’s one that we at HFA firmly uphold in our approach to serving our clients.” LOGIC OR EMOTIONS—OR BOTH? “In our opinion, one usually doesn’t exist without the other—especially when it comes to making personal financial decisions. Financial matters are not cutand-dried; they can be complicated and often emotional, particularly when they relate to major milestones and transitions. Our purpose is to provide outside perspective, expertise and guidance to help clients move forward confidently. At the same time, we treasure the personal relationships we have with the families we serve; these are long-lasting connections that span multiple generations in many cases.” WHAT IS ON YOUR BUCKET LIST FOR THE UPCOMING YEAR? “2020 will be our 28th year of business. It’s going to cap off an exciting couple of years for HFA. This year we ranked among AdvisoryHQ’s top 11 financial advisors in Los Angeles. We’re hoping to repeat that honor in the year ahead. We’ll also be making some exciting new user updates to our website, ramping up our educational programs and events, and building out the resources we provide to those we serve. We’ll keep growing our bucket list to ensure the next 28 years are just as successful and meaningful as the last 28.”

MOSS ADAMS JIM SCHLAGER, PRINCIPAL FINANCIAL ADVISOR

A

Manhattan Beach resident, Jim Schlager is a partner at Moss Adams who works with South Bay families and business owners to help them grow and protect their prosperity. With Moss Adams’ Private Clients Practice, he and his team help clients meet financial goals and make informed decisions. He espouses a holistic approach to wealth management, integrating financial, investment, tax, estate trusts, insurance, real estate and charitable giving into one strategic plan. Jim grew up in Seattle and started his financial career after graduating from Washington State University. He obtained a master’s degree in financial planning and earned the Certified Financial Planner™ certification, Chartered Life Underwriter, Chartered Financial Consultant, and Certified Trust and Financial Advisor designations. Jim led the opening of the Moss Adams’ California offices and has worked in the financial services field for more than 25 years. WHAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT SERVICE YOU OFFER CLIENTS? “We’re deeply vested in our clients’ financial affairs. It’s essential to have an advisor who has a 360º view of a client’s business, personal finances and—perhaps most importantly—goals. We look at the big picture and help our clients make financial decisions that help them thrive.” WHY SHOULD A POTENTIAL CLIENT CHOOSE YOUR FIRM? “Managing wealth and taxes are critical components for maintaining financial independence. And if a family owns a business, that can be even more

challenging. We help families achieve their goals by providing integrated solutions that combine our tax, investment and a wide range of advisory solutions tailored to their unique needs. In today’s complex marketplace, you need that to achieve real growth.” SHARE A TOP TIP FOR FINANCES. “It isn’t enough to create a financial plan just once and walk away. You have to continuously track, monitor and make adjustments. Life isn’t static and neither is economics—so your plan shouldn’t be either. As you and your family get older, your needs evolve. Plus there are myriad other factors—from health care to the markets—that are constantly in flux and can impact your finances. So it is essential to constantly monitor your financial plan and make sure it is on target to meet your goals.” WHAT’S THE MOST COMMON MISTAKE PEOPLE MAKE WITH THEIR MONEY? “I often see investments handled separately from other financial areas, such as taxes, estate planning and insurance. Typically this isn’t a beneficial approach; investments should be integrated into and evaluated as part of the whole package. It can help you seize opportunities and decrease the risk of unexpected negative outcomes. Again, it’s about managing wealth in the context of an integrated financial plan, which is an ongoing process.”

Most of my clients are here as well, and I see them frequently—in the office, at community events and social gatherings. Living here with my wife and two kids allows me to have my finger on the pulse of the community. I know clients’ concerns and can spot opportunities for them. Sometimes clients will reach out to discuss a substantial investment; other times it’s about a charitable contribution they want to make. Whatever the opportunity is, we evaluate it completely, keeping a keen eye on the impact it will have on the portfolio as a whole and to the client’s goals. At my office on Rosecrans, the door is always open.” WHO’S YOUR IDEAL CLIENT? “The client who cares about their investment portfolio as much as I do and who takes it as seriously as I do. I view wealth management as a team effort. I’m their first point of contact and can bring the resources of the whole firm to them so the support they receive is tailored to their situation and opportunities. For me, there’s nothing more satisfying than that.” Disclaimer: Assurance, tax, and consulting offered through Moss Adams LLP. Investment advisory services offered through Moss Adams Wealth Advisors LLC. Investment banking offered through Moss Adams Capital LLC.

WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF LIVING AND WORKING IN THE SOUTH BAY? “First of all, I love the South Bay. After some 20 years here, I truly love where I live.

ADVANCED PLANNING SOLUTIONS, INC. NANCY GRAGG, FOUNDER

N

ancy Gragg is CEO and founder of Advanced Planning Solutions, Inc. and has been involved in the financial services industry for more than 40 years. She started the firm 20 years ago while raising four young children, after working for years with her father in the insurance and mutual fund business. Today her son John Gragg also works at the firm and has more than a decade of experience in the industry. He earned a finance degree from San Diego State University and worked with several technology and investment firms before joining Nancy at Advanced Planning Solutions. WHY SHOULD A POTENTIAL CLIENT CHOOSE YOUR FIRM? “We have a lot of clients who come to us from other financial advisors and feel as if they are not being heard; we hear this all the time. Our hands-on approach to each client creates a relationship and partnership that builds through time. We understand that discussing finances can be stressful and uncomfortable. The research and analysis that goes on behind the scenes is presented to our clients in an easy-to-understand and comfortable way.” WHAT IS THE FOCUS OF ADVANCED PLANNING SOLUTIONS? “As wealth management professionals, we focus on four pillars that have led our clients to financial success. (1) Portfolio Management: Our investment portfolios are built upon a tried-and-true approach to investing, risk tolerance, performance and tax efficiencies. We categorize them into four

distinct strategies and build individual portfolios around that. (2) Retirement Roadmap: Viewable through your personal website, we aim to optimize your retirement income by using your investment and retirement accounts, pensions, social security, home value and spending habits to create a continuing roadmap throughout our relationship. (3) Comfortable Communication: Oftentimes we find that finances can make people uncomfortable, so we pride ourselves in our handholding approach. We love our clients and encourage them to reach out with questions. (4) Professional Coordination: We work together with your CPAs, attorneys and other professionals. We will also help coordinate a professional relationship should you need that referral.” WAS THERE A MOMENT THAT YOU FIRST KNEW YOU WANTED TO WORK IN THIS INDUSTRY? “It was a tale of two stories. On one side I had grandparents who grew up in a wealthy family that owned a successful business. After years of poor financial decision-making, they had only social security as an income source at the end of their lives. On the other side I had grandparents who came from nothing and lived by the phrase ‘a penny saved is a penny earned.’ They had wealth in their later years, attributed to hard work and savvy decision-making. Learning about the completely opposite paths they took was eye-opening for me and had an impact on how I view money and where I am today.”

WHAT IS THE BEST WAY PARENTS CAN HELP CHILDREN SAVE FOR THE FUTURE? “Start an investment and savings program with your children from an early age. If you open them a savings or investment account and teach them about saving, it will have a big impact on their lives going forward. My son has told me that a big part of the reason he had an interest in finance from an early age was because of a Christmas present he received from his grandparents: three shares of Disney stock.” LOGIC OR EMOTIONS—OR BOTH? “They go hand-in-hand. Emotions play a large part when it comes to investing and retirement. Before we begin discussing investment options with our clients, we always have them answer a few questions to gauge their risk score; then we work from there.” Disclaimer: Securities and advisory services offered through Registered Representatives of Cetera Advisor Networks LLC (doing business in CA as CFGAN Insurance Agency) member FINRA SIPC, a broker/ dealer and a Registered Investment Advisor. STUMPO WEALTH MANAGEMENT GINO R. STUMPO, CFP, CPRC

G

ino R. Stumpo, CFP, CRPC is a Managing Director-Wealth Management, Wealth Advisor and Portfolio Manager at UBS Financial Services, Inc. He has nearly 20 years of experience in wealth management, where his career has focused on serving the needs of successful high net worth individuals and families. Gino is a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professional as well as a CHARTERED RETIREMENT PLANNING COUNSELOR. WHY DID YOU BECOME A FINANCIAL ADVISOR? “Growing up I saw firsthand the challenges of retirement planning through my father, who was an engineer at McDonnell Douglas/Boeing. After earning a degree in finance in 1999, I joined UBS—a global firm with 150 years of history—where I naturally gravitated toward assisting aerospace employees with retirement planning, taking into consideration their unique circumstances.” WHAT SETS YOU APART FROM OTHER ADVISORS? “Rather than implementing a blank investment approach, I tailor each portfolio to meet each client’s financial needs and goals. I remain personally involved with every client, spending time each year meeting with them to ensure plans and investments are adjusted as they undergo lifestyle changes and long-term goal changes. I coordinate with CPAs and estate attorneys to obtain a more accurate financial picture and make recommendations based on individual client suitability.” WHAT ARE SOME KEY SERVICES YOU OFFER? “As a financial advisor I understand that managing wealth goes beyond numbers and investments. I assist clients with strategies

for retirement, investment management, asset allocation and diversification, wealth transfer, estate planning and philanthropic services. I host educational workshops in which I discuss comprehensive retirement and financial planning strategies.” WHAT IS YOUR OPINION OF THE MARKET VOLATILITY? “I understand the concerns individuals have about the market, their investments and their retirement funds. Whether it is out of fear or instinct, many investors may be selling when the market is low and buying when the market is high. This can lead to poor buying and selling decisions, which may impact an investor’s financial outlook. In my opinion, it is imperative to take advantage of opportunities as they arise, rather than following the majority of investors. For retirees, I focus on creating a cash flow through carefully selected dividend and income-producing investments. I structure investment portfolios to produce a steady stream of income, despite market fluctuations. I spend time educating clients, as I believe it is imperative for individuals to understand the underlying credit of each investment.” WHAT IS YOUR APPROACH TO RETIREMENT? “I consider a multitude of concerns regarding retirement in order to accurately assess a client’s financial health. I analyze items such as current retirement funds, spending habits, long-term goals and debt. I then run financial analysis to show how different factors can impact retirement success (e.g., paying for college tuition or annual spending levels). My approach is tailored for each client, depending on their short-term and long-term financial goals. Please contact my team should you wish to discuss your own financial situation.”

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY DOING WHEN YOU’RE NOT AT WORK? “A couple years ago my wife, Ana Maria, and I brought our son, Lucca, into the world. While we spend most of our time watching Lucca grow (too quickly), we also enjoy going on hikes with our Goldendoodle, Bentley, and trying new restaurants.” Gino R. NAVIGOE WEALTH MANAGEMENT SCOTT LEONARD, OWNER

N

avigoe is a South Bay fee-only financial fiduciary that works with business owners, executives and families concerned with maintaining and growing their financial prosperity. Owner and CERTIFIED FINANICAL PLANNER™ professional Scott Leonard has more than 25 years of experience in financial planning and wealth management. For the past two years Navigoe has been selected as one of the “Best Financial Advisors & Wealth Management Firms in Los Angeles” by AdvisoryHQ. IS THERE AN OVERRIDING CONCEPT THAT BEST DESCRIBES NAVIGOE’S SERVICES? “We call it Family Wealth Preservation. Our clients have worked hard, sacrificed and saved to achieve financial independence. They are looking to generate a steady income stream in retirement for themselves while still preserving their financial legacy for subsequent generations.” HOW DO YOU APPROACH THE DIFFICULT TASK OF WEALTH PRESERVATION? “Our entire service model is set up to design, implement and oversee a custom financial strategy that integrates all the aspects of family wealth preservation: investment management, tax mitigation, estate planning, income generation, wealth transfer, charitable giving and asset protection.” WHAT IS UNIQUE ABOUT NAVIGOE’S FAMILY WEALTH PRESERVATION VERSUS OTHER TRADITIONAL WEALTH MANAGEMENT SERVICES? “What is unique is the focus on both preservation and income. There are many different factors that can impact families’ financial health. Most firms primarily focus

on the investments. However, other elements such as taxes, costs and complexity are much greater forces affecting the long-term value of capital and its ability to generate usable income. We use a holistic approach to the preservation of capital, always seeking to determine if it can be accomplished for less money, less complexity, less risk and lower taxes.” WHAT TYPES OF CLIENTS ARE BEST SUITED FOR THIS WEALTH PRESERVATION SERVICE? “Family Wealth Preservation is best suited for families that have already accumulated a seven-figure net worth. Yet it is extremely appropriate for those who are still in the accumulation—or saving—phase of their lives. Since taxes are one of the biggest expenses for most people, doing proper multiyear tax planning early is critical to minimize the effects of taxation later in life. Planning earlier for financial independence and family wealth preservation leads to a higher probability of achieving these goals.” IS THERE AN EXAMPLE OF A TYPICAL NEW CLIENT TO NAVIGOE? “There tend to be two different life events that cause families to seek our services. One is a family milestone of their kids approaching college graduation. For many of these families, the focus has been on career growth, savings and paying for college for their kids. Now that they are empty nesters and often well-established professionally, their focus turns to retirement. This is a natural phase to turn their financial focus to retirement income generation and wealth preservation. The other major event that causes new clients to seek Navigoe’s services is a financial windfall of some type: inheritance, large pension or retirement plan rollover, selling

of a business, major equity event from their employer, etc. This increase in wealth allows families to consider new options for their lives, and preserving capital is a key component to ensuring their next chapter is fulfilling.” NAVIGOE IS AN INTERESTING NAME; WHAT DOES IT MEAN? “‘Navigo’ is Latin for ‘navigate’ or ‘to sail.’ The translation is specifically ‘to navigate a sailboat across oceans.’ At Navigoe we believe that we serve as our clients’ financial navigator, helping them achieve their goals and doing so in a secure and enjoyable manner.” YOU PERSONALLY KNOW SOMETHING ABOUT NAVIGATING OCEANS. “Yes, in 2011 my family and I departed on a 2½-year sailing trip through the Caribbean Sea and the South Pacific. I worked remotely on the boat with periodic trips back to the South Bay for meetings. In the middle of the worst recession since the Great Depression, I literally sailed off into the sunset … and we did not lose a single client as a result of the trip. I attribute that to the incredible staff of Navigoe, our commitment to service and the peace of mind we provided to our clients during the Great Recession and market crash.” TELL US ABOUT THE PHOTO IN THIS PROFILE. “We are in front of our office, which is a historic home located in Redondo Beach on the corner of PCH and Beryl Street. Back in the early 2000s my wife, Mandi, and I embarked on a multiyear renovation to restore the historic home and grounds and make it Navigoe’s office. Our entire staff are South Bay residents, as are most of our clients.”

CALIFORNIA RETIREMENT ADVISORS CHRISTIAN CORDOBA, FOUNDER

C

hristian Cordoba, a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™, founded California Retirement Advisors in 1997 with the goal of offering clients retirement advice beyond merely buying investments. His team specializes in retirement wealth management and providing guidance for people who don’t have the time, knowledge or desire to do it themselves. WHAT DOES CALIFORNIA RETIREMENT ADVISORS OFFER CLIENTS? “We genuinely believe that smart financial knowledge and decision-making, especially with IRAs and 401(k)s, can help people be good stewards of their money and significantly impact their quality of life. That is why our core value offering is the same today as it was back in 1997: to help you plan, manage and monitor the income, investment and distribution of your retirement wealth so you can live a better life.” WHY SHOULD A POTENTIAL CLIENT CHOOSE YOUR FIRM? “There is a huge difference between hiring an ‘investment’ company whose real purpose is to build an empire at the expense of other people’s life savings versus working with a ‘lifer’—30 years in the business—who has built a solid reputation for specializing in retirement wealth management and doing what is in the best interest of the consumer at all costs. All of our advisors stand uniquely qualified—not just as retirement specialists but in quality, character and compassion— because we all draw from past personal experiences in our lives and places in our hearts to help others and be true advocates for the consumer. When you hire us, we don’t

take this responsibility lightly. See a video highlighting one of our advisors’ stories at ArcadiaKeane.com.” WHAT’S THE BIGGEST LESSON YOU LEARNED WITH YOUR OWN FINANCES? “The biggest lesson I’ve learned about my own finances isn’t necessarily about money itself but rather about what it represents. This stems from the experience I had in 1994 with the 6.7 magnitude Northridge earthquake. It was the second time in my life I lost just about everything I owned. But I was also lucky enough to walk away with everything that mattered most—my life and that of my family and friends—unlike the 57 people who perished. Among other things, this day reminded me that our money affords us the freedom, security and confidence to do what we want to do, when we want and need it most. The experience also morphed into the three basic but core ingredients our advisors and I still use to help clients maintain their financial security today. Always help them (1) get informed, (2) be prepared and (3) make a plan—based upon what they want and need.” HOW DOES PHILANTHROPY FIT INTO YOUR CLIENTS’ FINANCIAL WELL-BEING? “It isn’t the philanthropic act itself that is the greatest reason for our clients’ improved well-being but rather the ability to confidently be philanthropic in the first place. Many of our clients are extremely generous toward worthy causes that help provide an extreme sense of purpose and self-fulfillment, be it by supporting an existing qualified charitable organization or starting their own nonprofit—perhaps in memory of a personal

loss. But being able to even do those things confidently to begin with—without the fear or concern that their own financial well-being will be jeopardized as a result—is the true benefit back to them.” WHAT’S THE MOST COMMON MISTAKE PEOPLE MAKE WITH THEIR MONEY? “Not spending it! Wealthy people are often successful because they’ve spent a lifetime being responsible financially by spending less money than they made and investing the difference wisely. This is not an easy habit to begin and an even harder one to continue, but hardest of all to kick! At some point people have accumulated more wealth than they can or will ever spend. Yet they still refrain from allowing themselves (and possibly their spouse or partner) to do those things they want to do—taking that dream cruise with the family, going to their favorite team’s playoff game or upgrading to business or first class on a long flight. Proper financial guidance can not only help people grow and preserve their assets, but more importantly it can give them the confidence and peace of mind to know it is finally OK to do those little things they wouldn’t otherwise do … but want to. We take great pleasure in helping our clients live rich, not just die rich.” Disclaimer: Advisory services offered through California Retirement Advisors and First Allied Advisory Services, Inc., Securities offered through First Allied Securities, Inc., A Registered Broker/Dealer, Member FINRA/SIPC. W

ealth manager Evan Kirkpatrick founded Wendell Charles Financial in 2011 and has worked in the financial industry for 12 years. He and his team assist clients by managing investment portfolios, creating financial plans and providing custom advice based on each individual or family situation. WHY SHOULD A POTENTIAL CLIENT CHOOSE YOUR FIRM? “We start with a conversation about your life, goals and specific situation so we can mutually determine if it’s a fit. If I had to boil it down to one reason clients should choose to engage us, it’s our thoughtfulness. We can make sense out of an unorganized financial situation, help undo past mistakes to a certain degree and provide concrete action steps to set you toward the right path.” WHAT’S THE BIGGEST LESSON YOU LEARNED WITH YOUR OWN FINANCES? “I can’t handle all of the numbers myself despite the fact that I’m a financial professional. I have a bookkeeper, a CPA and am adding a CFO soon. I truly believe the old saying that experts can be expensive, but mistakes will cost you a fortune.” HOW CAN PARENTS HELP CHILDREN SAVE FOR THE FUTURE? “I am a new dad myself to a 4-month-old daughter. My wife and I opened a 529 college savings plan, and we recommend that vehicle to many clients as well. In addition, we opened a nonretirement investment account with an automatic monthly contribution to offer her in the future. Depending on your situation, it may make sense to set up a trust with specific instructions related to the timing and reasons funds may be accessed by your children in the future. And we have also opened Coogan Trust accounts on behalf of child actors.” Disclaimer: Evan Kirkpatrick is a Registered Representative with, and securities and advisory services offered through LPL Financial, a registered investment advisor, Member FINRA/SIPC. All investing involves risk including loss of principal. No strategy assures success or protects against loss. Prior to investing in a 529 Plan investors should consider whether the investor’s or designated beneficiary’s home state offers any state tax or other state benefits such as financial aid, scholarship funds, and protection from creditors that are only available for investments in such state’s qualified tuition program. Withdrawals used for qualified expenses are federally tax-free. Tax treatment at the state level may vary. Please consult with your tax advisor before investing. TORTUGA WEALTH MANAGEMENT

T

ortuga Wealth Management was founded in 2010 by Angela Park Sheldon and Kevin Bidenkap with the goal of assisting clients with every aspect of their financial lives. Jeff Weston joined the firm in 2017. Together the three wealth advisors have nearly 50 years of experience in the business of personal finance. TELL US ABOUT TORTUGA WEALTH MANAGEMENT. “We’ve provided the most personal service available, thus earning a reputation for excellence in our industry. For each of our clients, we strive to help create financial stability and confidence to achieve financial independence from one generation to the next. Just like the story of the turtle vs. the hare, we believe that ‘slow and steady’ wins the race.” WHAT IS YOUR SPECIALTY? “Our specialty is multi-generational

financial planning. As individuals and families move through the stages of their personal and professional lives, we make sure they have a financial plan to manage their goals and objectives and always have a clear path forward.” WHY SHOULD A POTENTIAL CLIENT CHOOSE YOUR FIRM? “Clients choose our firm because we keep things simple and straightforward. We help simplify our clients’ lives. We play quarterback for them. If a parent dies, we hold their hand through the estate settlement process on the financial side. If they face retirement, we hold their hand through the transition from a typical W-2 situation to getting ‘paid’ from their accounts here. We make our clients feel welcomed, appreciated and that we can help them with our myriad of resources at our fingertips. We are problem-solvers—not just investment managers. Our fees are not tiered; we charge a fee and everything—including

trading costs and consulting/planning—is all included.” LOGIC OR EMOTIONS—OR BOTH? “Sometimes it feels like you’re a therapist in this line of work. Emotions play a huge role in how people view their finances. It could be a sense of identity for some people, while for others it’s a legacy that connects them to their deceased parents or grandparents. These emotions must be taken into consideration while injecting logic into decisions that must be made.” Disclaimer: Kevin Bidenkap, Jeff Weston and Angela Park Sheldon are registered representatives with and securities offered through LPL Financial, member FINRA/ SIPC. The Myth of the Empty Nest Why parents should stop wasting energy dreading the moment the kids move on. WRITTEN BY JANE ULMAN ILLUSTRATED BY CHRISTINE GEORGIADES

“When you leave for college, you’re outta here,” my father frequently reminded my siblings and me. We didn’t mind. We’d been waiting a lifetime to be liberated. And when my younger brother opted for early release to boarding school at age 15, they downsized to a small apartment. Ciao, childhood bedrooms. My parents were early-bird empty nesters, predating that term—which originated in 1970 or later, according to dictionary.com— by at least a year. But parents of my generation and those following are different. “Of course, you have good kids,” my mom once told me during a “discussion” about parenting. “You spend enough time with them.” In fact, we parents want to spend so much time with our almost or full-fledged adult children that “empty nest” has become a syndrome, (though not an official clinical diagnosis). When our kids move on, many of us experience deep sadness, loneliness and even loss of identity. But I have news for all of you millennial parents who tear up at preschool graduation thinking that one day your child will leave, and for all you Gen Xers dreading

SOUTHBAY | MAY/JUNE 2019

your 18-year-old’s graduation from high school, having already jotted down the exact date he or she is moving into a dorm. Don’t waste those tissues. Today’s kids boomerang back home faster than you can say, “Let’s turn that bedroom into a meditation and yoga studio with a built-in rope wall.” According to a Pew Research Center study, 15% of young adults ages 25 to 35, as of 2016, were living in their parents’ homes. After our sons graduated from college and snagged that first job and a place to live, we presented each with a severance package: a bed, five dress shirts, two pairs of slacks and a leather belt. But as soon as one of them changed jobs, opted to apply to graduate school or was hit by a tanking economy, he was again living at home— for periods that ranged from a few weeks to a few years. We loved having them back—especially since we no longer had to drive them to soccer practice or pack school lunches. Our boys are gone now (really), but their memorabilia linger on. Our house is crowded with textbooks, yearbooks, trading cards—“Mom, they’re worth a lot of money.

Don’t throw them out,” they warn—and Legos that don’t fit in their small, Ikeafurnished apartments. Never mind that they also don’t fit in our California ranch-style house with no attic, no basement and less than enviable closet space. I tell my daughters-in-law (who both impressively cleaned out their own childhood rooms years ago) that as soon as they relocate to bigger digs, I’ll be showing up with boxes of their husband’s books, toys and childhood treasures. They smile, guardedly, knowing it’s not an idle threat. Meanwhile my husband, Larry, and I are busy making room for a crib and other paraphernalia for visiting granddaughters. And now we’re thrilled the boys never moved out their children’s books, Beanie Babies and wooden blocks. So take note, millennial and Gen X parents: The kids come back. Followed by their kids. You just have to drop the dream of a meditation and yoga studio with a built-in rope wall. ■ Writer Jane Ulman and her husband, Larry, plan to build a storage unit with all the Legos left behind by their four grown sons.
