Being mindful that we are an organization that celebrates the inclusion of all, and our everforward motion of creating a theatrical space that is equitable to and for all - we lift our hearts in celebration and hold reverence for the ancestors of the Indigenous people that have come before us and honor the land on which we offer you this production. We recognize that the land we live, work, and thrive upon is not our own. We also acknowledge the painful travesties of genocide and colonization that Indigenous communities have had to endure. Moonbox Productions would like to pay homage to the original inhabitants of this land: The Massachusett people and their neighbors the Wampanoag, and Nipmuc Peoples. With respect, we hold space in our hearts and minds for the people of the Massachusett Tribe and the land itself which remains sacred today.

When people ask me what CROWNS is about, I say “It’s about church ladies and their hats.” This was a bit of a joke from me--simple, concise, and too cute; every time I said it, folks chuckled and I chuckled along with them.
My brief cute description is true, CROWNS is about church ladies and their hats; however, the true meaning of the piece is not so simple nor is it a joke.
In Black culture, Church Ladies are stewards of the community: Grandmas, Aunties, and Cousins who hold the congregation together. They are the mothers at the heart of an extended family, keepers of the faith and traditions which have sustained us through dehumanizing discrimination, upheaval and protest, rape and enslavement, the Middle Passage, and so so much more. It is their collective spirit, across oceans and continents, which fosters and grows the resilience characteristic of the Diaspora.
Through mourning and celebration, these powerful Black Women are the pillars holding up our temples; they provide the melodies that keep us singing and praising, the rhythms that keep us dancing and loving, whether life is throwing curveballs or flowers.
So yes, CROWNS is a joyful musical about church ladies and their hats who help a young girl find her way, and it’s also about the divine, indomitable spirit of the Black Queens who birthed us and breathe life into us yesterday, today, and tomorrow—always. Amen, Ashe.
