Bienvenido. Estás en Paraguay, a orillas del río Paraná. En este mismo lugar, en 1893, el inmigrante suizo Moisés Bertoni pisó tierra firme y, al ver la exuberancia de la Selva Altoparanaense, se adentró en ella y decidió quedarse. Aquí fundó una colonia y la llamó Puerto Bertoni. Welcome. You are in Paraguay, at the shores of Paraná River. In 1893, in this very place, the Swiss immigrant Moisés Bertoni landed and while contemplating the exuberant Alto Paraná Jungle, decided to stay. He established a colony named Puerto Bertoni.
Por casi 40 años, junto a su familia, Moisés Bertoni comparte con los Mby’a y Avá Guaraní su proyecto de vida: construir una comunidad autosustentable que le permita observar, investigar y registrar nuevos conocimientos. Hoy, puedes recorrer este monumento a la vida y la memoria; seguir sus senderos y conocer un patrimonio natural y cultural de Paraguay. Next to his family and for almost 40 years, Moisés shares with the Mby’a and Avá Guaraní his life project: to develop a self-sufficient community that will enable him to observe, investigate and register new knowledge. Today you can visit this monument in honor to his life and memory; follow its tracks and discover a natural and cultural heritage of Paraguay.

A dieciséis kilómetros de Presidente Franco, el Monumento Científico Moisés Santiago Bertoni abarca 199 hectáreas de Selva Altoparanaense, integrándose al corredor ecológico más importante de la región. Cuando lo recorras, entrarás por un sendero poblado de especies autóctonas y exóticas. En medio de este paisaje de aire puro; encontrarás la casa y cementerio familiar de Moisés Bertoni, sus pertenencias, publicaciones; conocerás los cantos, danzas y artesanías de los Mby’a y Avá Guaraní. Y al terminar tu recorrido, habrás estado en los mismos lugares que Bertoni destinó al estudio de la naturaleza, la cultura paraguaya, la ciencia y la agricultura. The Moisés Santiago Bertoni Scientific Monument embraces 199 hectares of Alto Paraná jungle and is 16 kilometers away from the city of Presidente Franco. It borders the Paraná River, integrating South America’s most important ecologic corridor. When you get through it you will enter a path filled with native and exotic species. In the middle of this green area, filled with fresh air, you will find Bertoni’s house and the family cemetery, his belongings and publications. You will discover chants, dances and handcrafted goods made by the Mby’a and Avá Guaraní ethnic communities. By the time your visit is over, you will have experienced Paraguayan culture, science and agriculture in the same sites Bertoni chose to study nature.

LA PLAYA Aquí puedes tomarte unos minutos para contemplar las aguas del río Paraná; disfrutar del paisaje, la brisa y el silencio. Después vuelve a tu ruta. SENDERO ARROYO BERTONI Desde la playa, sigue el camino que Moisés Bertoni se abrió entre la exuberante vegetación de la Selva Altoparanaense. Durante el recorrido, tienes zonas de descanso y, a poco andar, verás un arroyo. Cruza un pequeño puente y acércate, sin prisas, a la casa que Bertoni construyó hace casi un siglo. THE BEACH Take one or two minutes to contemplate the course of the Paraná River; enjoy the landscape, the breeze and silence. Then, continue with your journey. BERTONI’S STREAM PATH Starting at the beach follow the path that Moisés Bertoni cleared himself amid the exuberant vegetation of Alto Paraná Jungle. Along the way, you will find spots to rest and if you go a little further you will find a stream. Cross over a small bridge and get closer, but with no hurry, to Bertoni’s house built a century ago.

Antes de pasar a la casa de Moisés Bertoni, en este salón se proyecta un documental que repasa los aportes de este hombre visionario que creyó en las bondades de la tierra roja paraguaya y en sus habitantes. WINKELRIED BERTONI AUDITORIUM Make a pause. Before getting to Moisés Bertoni’s house, you will find in this hallway, a projected documentary that reviews this visionary’s contribution, the man that believed in the goods of this Paraguayan red land and its people.
CASA-MUSEO De cara al río Paraná, la casa familiar de Moisés Bertoni es hoy un museo. Cuando la recorras, verás sus cartas, colecciones, objetos, fotografías y también las marcas de un hombre que concentró su vida en la producción y divulgación del conocimiento. HOUSE-MUSEUM In front of Paraná River, the Bertoni house is now a museum. When you pass through it you will see his letters, collections, objects, photographs and also the mark of a man that destined his life to produce and spread knowledge.
Recorre la Ruta Bertoni Follow the Route Bertoni SENDERO KURI´Y PALMITAL Este camino lo hizo Bertoni con una intención: el estudio de los ciclos de vida de la vegetación autóctona y de las especies exóticas que introdujo. Cuando vayas por él, mira con atención cada detalle. Verás los nombres de los árboles y plantas más representativos del Monumento. KURI´Y PALMITAL PATH This path was made by Bertoni only with one intention: the study of the exotic and native vegetation’s life cycle. When you go through it pay attention to every detail. You will see the names of the most important trees and plants of the Monument.
CEMENTERIO En este lugar, Moisés Bertoni quiso descansar. A metros de su casa, por el Sendero Kuri´y Palmital, pidió plantar un ciprés, años antes de morir: a sus pies quedaría su cuerpo, cerca de la raíces de este árbol que es tradición de los cementerios europeos. En este espacio de recogimiento, están también los restos de su madre, de cuatro de sus trece hijos, de su nieto y de una de sus nueras. CEMENTERY This is where Moisés Bertoni wanted to rest in peace. Only a few meters from his home, going through Kuri´y Palmital, he requested to be buried by a cypress, years before his death: at its feet remains his body, next to the roots of this tree which is a tradition in European cemeteries. In this place for self-communion, also rests his mother, four of his thirteen sons, his grandson and one of his daughters in law.
Recorre la Ruta Bertoni Follow the Route Bertoni COMUNIDADES Al recorrer la Ruta Bertoni, vas a conocer a los Mby’a Guaraní, habitantes ancestrales de estas tierras. En familia y comunidad, los indígenas viven dentro del Monumento y mantiene sus ritos, costumbres y creencias. También puedes encontrar a familias Avá Guaraní, que viven próximas al lugar y que en colaboración con los Mby’a, te ofrecerán bailes y cantos propios de su cultura. COMMUNITIES While passing Bertoni’s path you will meet the Mby’a Guaraní, ancient habitants from this lands. The native live with their families and in community with at the Monument and maintain their customs, traditions and rites. You can also find the Avá Guaraní families that live proximately to the place. They offer, as well as the Mby’a, their own dances and chants.
La dulce revolución: Ka’a he’ê The sweet revolution: Ka’a he’ê
El Ka’a he’ê o hierba dulce, la Stevia, azúcar verde; el oro verde paraguayo. Esta planta autóctona paraguaya la utilizan los guaraníes, desde la época precolombina, como edulcorante para el mate y otras infusiones. En 1887, Bertoni registra la Stevia Rebaudiana Bertoni, llamada así en homenaje al químico paraguayo Ovidio Rebaudi y a Moisés Bertoni. Sin calorías, 300 veces más dulce que el azúcar; el Ka’a he’ê se consume en Japón, China, Corea, Taiwán, algunos países de Europa, EE.UU, Brasil y, cómo no, en Paraguay. Ka’a he’ê or sweet herb, Stevia, green sugar; the green Paraguayan gold. This native plant from Paraguay has been used by the Guarani since the Pre-Columbian era as a sweetener for mate and other herbal infusions. In 1887, Bertoni registered Stevia Rebaudiana Bertoni, named after the Paraguayan chemist Ovidio Rebaudi and himself. It is 300 times sweeter than sugar and has no calories; Ka’a he’ê is consumed in Japan, China, Korea, Taiwan, many European countries, USA, Brazil and, of course, Paraguay.
Cómo llegar al Monumento How to get here
ACCESO POR TIERRA Desde Ciudad del Este toma la Ruta 7 hasta Presidente Franco. El trayecto de 7 kilómetros está pavimentado. Luego, continúa por 16 kilómetros de tierra hasta el Monumento. En el camino pasarás frente a las casas de familias Avá Guaraní y, poco a poco, verás como la vegetación crece y el aire se siente más fresco. Es recomendable el uso de vehículos 4x4 y abstenerse de viajar por tierra, en caso de lluvias recientes o en pronóstico.
ON THE ROAD From Ciudad del Este take Route number 7 to Presidente Franco. These 7 kilometers are pure pavement. Then continue through 16 kilometers of land towards the Monument. In your way you will pass in front of the houses of the Avá Guaraní. Little by little you will see how vegetation grows along and how the air goes clearer. It is recommendable the use of 4x4 vehicles and to abstain from travelling by land in case of recent rain or if it is going to.
ACCESO POR AGUA Llega al Monumento Científico Moisés Santiago Bertoni, remontando las caudalosas aguas del río Paraná, desde Argentina, Brasil o Paraguay. Durante el viaje contemplarás la espesa y majestuosa vegetación que crece en sus riberas, oirás los relatos de los navegantes y cruzarás el Hito Tres Fronteras.
BY WATER Reach the Moisés Santiago Bertoni Scientific Monument taking the course of Paraná River from Argentina, Brazil or Paraguay. During your trip you will admire the thick and majestic growing vegetation on the shores. You will hear sailor’s stories and cross through Hito Tres Fronteras.
