he USS Little Rock was supposed to be back home at port in Florida by now - but a harsh Canadian winter has proven tougher than the '3400 tons of displacement' US Navy combat ship is capable of.

After leaving Buffalo NY on December 16th, where the ship was commissioned, they were heading towards Montreal along the St. Lawrence River - just as the severe cold weather was hitting us. The USS Little Rock and her sailors were preparing to sail into the open waters of the Atlantic when they encountered ice so thick and heavy, they were only able to get as far as Habitat 67 - and the ship has been moored in the Old Port area since December 24th.

ate in near-shore environments', according to a post on their website. In other words, the US $440 million ship is built for speed, not breaking ice.

In the meantime, the ship is docked in an area where it is protected from being hit by ice. Little Rock's sailors, who call

themselves the 'Warhawgs' are making the best of things. The crew has been given supplies to help keep them warm and keeping busy with training, shoveling snow and scraping ice off the decks - but they are also having a little fun.

They have been checking out our fine city on their off-time and have even posted a video on their Facebook page (USS Little Rock Blue Crew Warhawgs) showing sailors tossing boiling hot water overboard and watching it freeze in midair.

"It's not the worst place to be stuck," Ensign Samantha Robbins told CBC News in a report on January 24th.

Iranian-American comic Maz Jobrani, who stars in the hit CBS sitcom “Superior Donuts”, returns to the Ethnic Show as its host, Joining him as part of the show’s line-up is comic Gina Brillon, who recently appeared alongside Sugar Sammy during last year’s Just For Laughs Canadian Comedy Tour.

nybody involved with youth football in Quebec knows the name Earl De La Perralle or as he’s often referred to,“the Godfather”. Every year the Quebec Midget Football League (QMFL) gathers for its annual awards banquet where they hand out trophies to the best players at each position in addition to the offensive and defensive MVPs. On February 3rd at Montreal's Sheraton Hotel the league honoured Earl De La Perralle with their first "Lifetime Achievement Award" in recognition for more than 40 years of service to the league and to the Greater Montreal community.The QMFL invited three guest speakers to present Mr. De La Perralle with the award and share some personal anecdotes about what he means to them as well as the life lessons he taught them in and outside of football. De La Perralle co-founded Sun Youth with Sid Stevens in 1954 and the organization originally started as a handwritten local newspaper which profits they would use to purchase sports equipment and to rent a gymnasium for sports and recreation activities. Today Sun Youth is one of the best-known charities in Montreal, servicing the community in several ways including a football program for kids ages 7 to 17. Among the 11 teams present, the Sun Youth Hornets received many honours including MVP Defense Olivier Cheremond, All-Star Defensive Back Mendell Joseph, All-Star Offensive Line Dion Thompson and All-Star Placekicker Tristan Gilbert-Thibault.

This event took place a week after the Quebec Bantam Football League Annual Banquet, where many Hornets players were also honoured with All-Star and MVP awards.

The great influence "Coach Earl" had on the younger generation could also be felt there with the Bantam team coaches named "Coaching Staff of the Year", which made De La Perralle, also attending the event, very proud.

Monica Reider, of Dollard des Ormeaux, has always had a knack for understanding electronic communications and always enjoyed teaching people. Now she offers training sessions for Facebook, Skype, smartphones, computers, etc at her clients’ own homes. She wants her clients to enhance their lifestyles However, perhaps most importantly, Reider (who is 62 and proud of being a senior) is close to the age of many of her clients. “I am not intimidating to seniors,” as she puts it.

Her clients generally range in age from their 60s to early 90s.

“I start by asking questions, seeing what my clients’ needs are. I listen to them. I listen to what they want to know. Why must they wait for a course to come along with an abundance of information that is, frankly, useless to them. They don’t need to know the intricacies of a computer, they just want to email, chat, or even play games like solitaire. I show them, step by step. I don’t do it for them. It’s important that they do it for themselves. Everything is written out and we go over it as many times as necessary until they can comfortably manage on their own. Everyone is different.

Everyone works at their own pace.”

The young ones were born into this computer world, we weren’t, and they sometimes forget that important fact. For them it’s 2nd nature, for us it’s a whole new learning • February 17, 2018

process. I’m a ‘Hands on’ person and know how important it is. I show people and guide them so that they can do this on their own.”

It is becoming increasingly important to cope with modern electronic technology and communications for both business and social reasons. Reider points to online banking as an important feature that many seniors are unfamiliar with. “It’s a great feeling; it’s liberating when you don’t need to go out in

bad weather just to make a bank transfer,” she notes.

Reider can also show how to sell unwanted items the modern way, via electronic notice boards such as Craigslist and Kijiji, helping clients to de-clutter. Making purchases online via E-bay and PayPal is also becoming increasingly important.

“But the biggest push for seniors is coming from wanting to keep in touch with their families and friends. Young people today prefer to communicate online by Facebook, Twitter, and email; letter writing is almost a lost art.” She also notes Canada Post’s stated intention to phase out home mail delivery as another reason to get aboard with electronic communications.

“Telephone communications can be carried out easily and inexpensively via Skype. Learning about electronic communications is especially perti-

nent for many Montreal seniors whose families have moved away from Quebec. These new skills help to keep seniors in touch and break the isolation.”

“Smart phones can also be intimidating for some users. I had one client who bought such a phone for emergency use, but never used it, never turned it on, not even once for an entire year. She was embarrassed to admit she didn’t know how to use it. She is not alone. I can show people how to use these things...”

Reider jokes about how her husband always used to call for her whenever the family TV or VCR machine wasn’t working properly, and how she was able to quickly get it working right. To supplement her knack with new technology, she has taken various courses at the Cummings Centre, The West Island Career Centre, and at John Abbott College in recent years.

Reider also tends to be one of the consumers who rushes to buy the latest technology just so she can stay abreast of the newest developments.

Reider recently impressed the Quebec government enough to merit receiving a new business start-up grant.

“I go to my clients’ place of residence to show them how to use their new technology. I have clients over the West Island, in NDG, Cote St Luc, Park Extension, and downtown. There’s a one hour minimum with my services. Payment can be made by cash, cheque, or credit card.”

(Answer: Hardly anyone!) * Positional Release- With the following positional release techniques, you will deactivate the muscle in spasm. It can be done with one of two ways: Muscle Shortening- Identify the muscle which is in spasm.

Then find its end points, where the muscle attaches to the bone.You will want to put the muscle on slack by bringing the two ends closer to each other. With your fingertips, press the muscle in toward itself from the ends.This signals the neuromuscular system to turn off the muscle.

This is a tricky skill with neck muscles because it is more difficult to find the ends of the muscles.

Repositioning- Another way to put the muscle on slack and send those deactivation signals is by gently moving other structures around the locked-up muscle. If you have a nasty 'crick in the neck', for example, one end of the af-

fected muscle attaches to the shoulder blade. So, you can gently press the shoulder blade upward, toward the neck, to put it on slack.

Strain, Counter-Strain- This is the third technique that most health practitioners could be using to relieve spasms. When your neck is in spasm, you will apply a slight, gentle resistance force in the opposite direction of the spasm, and then stretch the muscle in the direction that it was originally tight. It will stretch farther and loosen up.

If you practice these, you will eventually be able to use them very quickly to stop spasms. When you are proficient at them, you can also help others to relieve their pain and tension.

he Canadiens announced on Tuesday that the team has agreed to a three-year contract extension with goaltender Charlie Lindgren.

The deal is a one-way agreement which will keep him with the club through the 2020-21 season.

Originally from Lakeville, MN, Lindgren has taken part in eight NHL games with the Canadiens this season, posting a 3-4-1 record in those outings. He recorded a 2.43 goals-against average, a .924 save percentage, and one shutout with the big club.

Jennifer Gasoi - Gets with the Times

S

he is genuine, driven and has the talent to match. Jennifer Gasoi is a singer, songwriter and producer living in Montreal, who has more than a few awards and accolades to her credit - including a 2014 Grammy award for Best Children's Album. She is foremost an accomplished musician who studied classical piano for 12 years and later studied jazz voice, piano and composition. It is why she is not only popular with children, but with adults as well.

Jennifer’s musical journey began when she was all of four years old. She was shopping with her mother when they went into a local toy store where she spotted a small piano. It was the first time

at McGill University and received your degree in 1996, yet you decided to go back to Vancouver for five years only to return again in 2002. Why was that?"

JG: Well, I was done with my degree and felt I was missing something, I was ready to do something different. During my last year at McGill I took a vocal jazz choir class with Ranee Lee and I fell in love with jazz. I had a one line solo in 'Body & Soul' and something in me said 'you have to pursue music as a career'… so I called my parents and said (laughing), 'Guess what?

I'm going to become a musician!' And so I moved back and studied jazz in Vancouver (at Capilano University).

Music has been in Jennifer's heart from the start. She has a great ear and is able to play anything she hears. At first she never really imagined pursuing music as a career because as she said, 'I come from a very conservative family, where you get a job… you're a teacher or a lawyer… you know.'

JG: I have a calling in my heart… I have to pursue it, so I decided to go back to learn jazz composition, writing, piano, vocals and I

I recently had the opportunity to sit down with Jennifer to discuss her music and accomplishments and to find out a little more about her. I arrived at her office, filled with a bright and natural light - matched only by the warm and contagious smile I was greeted with.

studied for two years. Afterwards, I just wanted to go perform, so I just went out and got every performance I possibly could.

Back in Montreal in 2002, she began to play regularly at the Upstairs Jazz Bar and still performs there every so often.

JG: The first time I ever went there, I talked to Joel (the owner) and I said 'I'd like a gig here' and he said 'play something', so I played one of my kid's songs… and he said 'Okay, you're hired!' When I gigged there, I would do jazz and all kinds of stuff, but I would always play a couple of my kid's songs… and adults loved them.

"With all your jazz and classical training, why did you decide to get into music for children, how did that come about?"

he world of wine is extremely varied and diverse and nowhere is this more evident than in Portuguese wines. In Canada, Quebec, Ontario and British Columbia are the biggest consumer. In 2015, Portugal was in the top 10 wine importers in Canada.

Most Portuguese wines are sold in the SAQ and LCBO from somewhere between $10 and $140 dollars.These latter wines are more expensive and some are of them are worth the money, but you can get a great bottle of

wine in the lower spectrum as well. Garrafeira is a useful term to know when reading a Portuguese wine label. It is used for red wines mostly and means that the wine has been aged for at least two years before bottling, and has spent at least a year in the bottle. White wines that use the term are aged for at least six months before bottling and then have to spend at least six months in the bottle thereafter.

Portugal has a number of wine regions but some of the most famous are the Douro Valley, the Minho, the Dão, Beiras, Bairrada, Ribatejo and the Alentejo. The wines from the Minho are just on the border with Spain and share a lot in common with their Spanish counterpart.

The Douro Valley is undoubtedly one of the finest regions for making not just Port wines but also still red wines in Por-

tugal. That is due to the rocky schist soil, which helps to produce great wines the world over, and to the Douro River, which runs through it, creating the perfect microclimates for grape growing. Still wines are made from the same combinations of grape varieties that can be found in Port wines such as Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz (known as Tempranillo in Spain), Tinta Barroca, Tinta Cao and Touriga Francesca.

elping people with their everyday legal needs is the focus of Your Law: Ontario Law Simplified– a new series of short videos on YouTube at www.youtube.com/user/ YourLawSeries Launched by the Law Society of Upper Canada, the first five videos in the series look at buying or selling a house, writing a will and creating a power of attorney, dealing with personal injury, custody and child support, as well as alimony and jointly owned property.

“From our research, we are aware that Ontarians have civil legal needs that are not being met,” says Malcolm Heins, the Law Society's chief executive officer. “We want to show people how a lawyer can help them with the types of legal issues that arise in their day-to-day lives, and also make the public aware lawyers are more affordable than people may think.”

Each video features two lawyers talking about the types of issues that could arise and the various issues consumers need to consider.

“Lawyers can help people prevent problems from arising in the first place,” says Susan Elliott.

Elliott is a sole practitioner from Kingston who appears on the real estate video. “In this video, we talk about the need to involve a lawyer early on in a real estate transaction to help you tailor the agreement of 12

purchase and sale to best protect your rights, whether you are buying or selling a property.”

Alternately, lawyers can help people untangle problems once they have happened. For example, as shown in the personal injury video, a lawyer can help ease you through the process of obtaining compensation if you have had an accident, need to miss work, and have extra medical expenses for rehabilitation.

The wills and estates video has the same perspective. “Planning ahead and having a proper power of attorney and will in place can save your family problems and headaches,” says Bonnie Yagar, a Mississauga lawyer featured in the video.

Heins adds, “We hope that this series will help to demystify some of the common legal issues that members of the public often face and also demonstrate how lawyers are helpful and accessible.”

After World War II, the Canadian economy was improving, the population was growing rapidly, and there was a need for a larger output of coinage to meet this. During the war certain coins...espe-

Canadian Maple Leaf Coins 1947-1948

cially the silver dollar, either had reduced mintages, or were suspended.

Since a new obverse die would be required to strike the 1948 coins, and the matrices and punches did not arrive in time from the Royal Mint in London for minting them, the Royal Canadian Mint faced a big problem.

They needed to produce coins...but could not, as they did not yet receive the new design from England. In early 1948 they came up with a clever idea. They continued to mint coins with the 1947 date so they could keep the same obverse, but to differentiate these coins from the ones actually minted in 1947, they put a small maple leaf just after the date. This would avoid confusion with actual 1947 coins.

This is not the first time the Royal Canadian Mint (RCM) has applied this solution. In 1937 the RCM was waiting for the master tools from London to produce the first coins of George VI after the passing of George V and abdication of Edward VIII. Since they did not

arrive on time, an emergency issue of 1936 25 cents was made with a dot on the bottom of the coin showing that it was actually coined in 1937.

Although scarce, many 1936 dot 25 cents survive and it is an interesting collectible. 1936 1 and 10 cents were also made with a dot, but only a handful of specimen coins survive, as the whole mintage was remelted in mid 1937.

In mid 1948 with the new design received, coins with the actual 1948 date were struck...but by this time much of the required coins were already made with the 47 maples. This explains why most Canadian coins with the 1948 date are much rarer than other years. For example a much used coin like the 10 cent...10 million were struck in 1948...but only about 4% of them with the 1948 date...the others are all 47 maples.

For collectors this has created two classic rarities of the Canadian coin series. The first and most popular is the 1948 dollar of which only 18,780 were struck (consider

the 1949 mintage was 672,218). Second rarity...and an extreme one at that, is the 1947 maple leaf 50 cent with the 7 curved right. As discussed in a previous article, very few survive (likely less the a couple

Tourtiere Wine & Dining

he tourtière is a Quebec institution. It is most often served around Christmas time, which is too bad because it is an amazing meal. It can be prepared in advance and be frozen for later use when time is precious.

There are many variations of tourtière and the following recipe is no exception. The first time I tasted a tourtière, it was quite bland and I wondered what all the fuss was about. It came as no surprise when I found out you had to smother it with ketchup! So I have tried to add a little herb and spice to bump up the flavor.

This recipe calls for a double crust pie crust.

The one on the shortening box is very good but

add a little flavor with pepper and dried herbs.

Ingredients: serves 8 • 1 double crust pie crust • Egg wash: 1 egg yolk, 2tbsp water and a pinch of salt • 1.5 lbs (total)ground pork, veal and lean beef • 1 large onion, diced • 2 cloves garlic, peeled, smashed and chopped • 1 tbsp grated fresh ginger • 1 cup leftover mashed potato • 1 tsp cinnamon • 1/2 tsp nutmeg • ½ tsp ground cloves • 2 tsp fresh thyme or dried herbs • 2 tbsp cognac or brandy (optional) • Salt and pepper to taste Cook the meat mixture in a fry pan until the meat is no longer pink. the fat and discard, keeping the juices.

In the same fry pan, heat a little oil and fry the onions, garlic and ginger until fragrant. Add the spices . In a large bowl, combine the meat, meat juices, onion garlic mixture, mashed potatoes, herbs, brandy salt and pepper.

A little trick I learned is to take a tablespoon of the meat mixture, wrap in foil and place in the oven for 15 minutes to cook.

You can taste the meat mixture and adjust the seasoning before cooking it in the pie. So adjust the seasoning and flavor at this point.

Roll out your dough, put in the meat mixture, cover with the top dough and egg wash the top dough – which will give a nice colour to the baked tourtière. Cut a few vents for steam to escape in the top crust. Bake in a 350º oven for 50 minutes.

Serve with a little ketchup or other sauces as required.

am not going to talk about resolutions because it bores me to even think about every year wondering what I should promise myself and every year being somewhat disappointed with my results. I talked last about mindfulness….being mindful about the here and now.

As I read more about this phenomenon I am convinced we should be paying more attention to it.

Following tips using mindfulness concepts might add to our coping strategies and help us to relax.

It fits with what I have been talking about in the past. Stress kills! Let’s conquer it.

Tip # 1...

To improve your performance, stop thinking about it (unselfconsciousness). Thinking too hard about what you're doing actually makes you do worse. If you're in a situation that makes you anxious—giving a speech, introducing yourself to a stranger, dancing—focusing on your anxiety tends to heighten it. Practice present-moment awareness. "Be right here right now! Just let go and let you be in the moment.

Living in the moment means "When I say, 'be here with me now,' I mean don't zone out or get too in-your-head—instead, focus less on what's

going on in your mind and more on what's going on in the room, less on your mental chatter and more on yourself as part of something." To be most yourself focus on things outside of yourself like the music or the people around you. Michael Kernis, a psychologist at the University of Georgia says "When people are mindful, they're more likely to experience themselves as part of humanity, as part of a greater universe."

That's why highly mindful people such as Buddhist monks talk about being "one with everything."

Mindfulness blurs the line between self and others.

By reducing self-consciousness, mindfulness allows you to witness the passing drama of feelings and social pressures without taking evaluations personally, explains Richard Ryan and K. W. Brown of the University of Rochester. When you focus on your immediate experience without attaching it to your self-esteem, unpleasant events like social rejection—or your so-called friends making fun of your dancing—seem less threatening. Focusing on the present moment also forces you to stop over thinking. "Being presentminded takes away some of that self-evaluation and getting lost in your mind.

In the mind is where we make the evaluations that beat us up," says Stephen Schueller, a psychologist at the University of Pennsylvania. Instead of getting stuck in your head and worrying, you can let yourself go.

Tip #2...

To avoid worrying about the future; focus on the present, savor it!!! In her memoir Eat, Pray, Love, Elizabeth Gilbert writes about a friend who, whenever she sees a beautiful place, exclaims in a near panic, "It's so beautiful

here! I want to come back here someday!" "It takes all my persuasive powers," writes Gilbert, "to try to convince her that she is already here." So often, we are trapped in thoughts of the future or the past. We forget to experience, let alone enjoy, what is happening right now. We gulp down our coffee and wonder what next? We eat our dinner and worry about the calories or question having that wonderful glass of wine. Why not try to relish what we are experiencing now….that glass of wine, that warm shower, that delicious pastry?

When participants in a study took a few minutes each day to actively savor something they usually hurried through—eating a meal, drinking a cup of tea, walking to the bus— they began experiencing more joy, happiness, and other positive emotions, and fewer depressive symptoms, Schueller found.

The hallmark of depression and anxiety is catastrophizing—worrying about something that hasn't happened yet and might not happen at all.

Worry, by its very nature, means thinking about the future and if you pull yourself into awareness of the present moment, worrying melts away. The flip side of worrying is ruminating, thinking bleakly about events in the past. If you focus on now, repetitive negative or sad thoughts about the past stop. This doesn’t mean that we forget the past.

We just don’t get stuck with the thought going

over and over in our mind stopping us from enjoying the present.

I will continue to explore “mindfulness” and playfully practice these tips and more to follow.

om McQueen has been associated with the Bar-BBarn for so long he's practically part of the furniture. When I ask the affable manager how long he's been at the iconic establishment celebrating its 50th anniver-

Co-owner with father and son Manny and Dalton Barnoff McQueen first met the pair on the golf course in Candiac while he was working as a caddy as a mere lad of 8 1/2 years old. The fa-

therless youngster from the south shore was drawn to the father-son duo and they to him.

They sent him to caddy school to learn how to ply his trade and he caddied for them until he was 15. At this point Manny said to him, "Enough, enough - time to get a real job and come work for us."

Manny brought him back to the Bar-B-Barn on Guy Street and said, "This is your future." McQueen complied with his mentor's request to come work for the family business and the rest is history. He had the usual apprenticeship in the restaurant & hotel industry starting off as a busboy - he quit the first night - but then went back shortly after. "I learned the whole kitchen, how to be a butcher, eventually becoming a waiter and bartender." On the day he turned 21 he became a manager.

McQueen laughs again when he thinks back to those days.

Bar-B crew. Manny & Dalton Barnoff, Bob Gainey, and Tom McQueen became fishing buddies and would go on fishing trips up north. "He was a very, very classy man," McQueen says of "Le Capitaine" of the Montreal Canadiens. Gary Carter of the Montreal Expos would also become a personal friend. A framed autographed glossy photo of him hangs on the walls of the rustic establishment along with countless others, a testament to the landmark eatery's reputation far and wide for friendly service and mouthwatering chicken and rib combos.

"Bell Canada and CN were big clients in the 80's," McQueen says. By this time a second Bar-BBarn was open for business on Sources Blvd. in DDO. Both barbeque restaurants are still going strong. Three times per year the hands-on McQueen makes personal deliveries of vacuumpacked meats all the way to the Northwest Territo-

Manny Barnoff was a class act himself sending racks of ribs to prisons. In the early years Barnoff had a ventilation company which took him down south where he developed a taste for ribs. He started to experiment with different recipes in his mother's kitchen before he opened the Bar-BBarn. One day he said to McQueen, "I think I've got it." He didn't have a kitchen at the restaurant yet so he cooked at his mother's place transporting the ribs and chicken in his LTD Station wagon downtown. "He worked hard for his success," McQueen says. It would become a great business.

"The city was buzzing," McQueen explains. Business was so good that one day Manny got out of his car in the middle of a snowstorm and started handing out combos.

Now that is service. He wouldn't have it any other way. McQueen isn't the only loyal member of the Bar-B-Barn family. "My barmaid just retired. She was 76 when she retired," McQueen says with evident pride.

"I wouldn't change anything," he says. He hears all the time from young people, families who have moved away about how much they miss the Bar-BBarn. As soon as they come back to Montreal they'll say, "I haven't been here for a while, but the first thing I've got to do is come to the Bar-B-Barn."

McQueen attributes the Bar-B's enduring brand and loyal clientele to the recipes which have stayed the same from "Day 1" along with the decor. His motto: keep smiling. "I still think I have a good 20 more years in me," he says.

CKGM Radio personality Ralph "The Birdman" Lockwood had a lot to do with bringing in the crowd to the chicken & ribs eatery downtown. People who listened to his show in the 1970's will recall Lockwood saying on air, "Come join me at the BarB-Barn." This was when he wasn't asking his trademark question, "How's your bird?" "He was there every day," McQueen says. The barn-style restaurant was also a favorite of Top 40 Radio DJ Marc "Mais Oui" Denis the bilingual voice of Montreal's airwaves for decades.The `"Bar-B" as it was affectionately known by many Montrealers was

going like the Energizer Bunny." Political heavyweights Brian Mulroney and René Lévesque were regular customers too.

Lévesque lived just up the street and would come by to get his "fix" of chicken and ribs around 11:30 am.

"Every Saturday morning he would walk here - no security. He had a great character. He was funny.

He had a political character which was rough but generally, he was nice."

Lévesque had one bad habit that is barely tolerated today - he smoked. In those days you could smoke in bars and restaurants. "He smoked like a chimney," McQueen says with a wry smile.

"We would rent city buses to take people to and from the football games," McQueen says. Such was the dedication of the Bar-B's own 'team' that they made sure the fans made it to home field to cheer on the Alouettes.

One of the "boys" who frequented the Bar-BBarn was Gazette journalist and bon vivant Nick Auf der Maur. "He was a fixture at the bar," McQueen says. "Never a dull moment - he always had stories. He was another Ralph. He would keep

The "best ever" figure to cross the Bar-B-Barn's threshold was Brian Mulroney. He would send the RCMP hours before to stake out the place. Then Brian and Mila would come in with their own security and they would have dinner. Mulroney still came after he was no longer Prime Minister although Lévesque didn't come by much once he moved to Nun's Island.

Other notables graced the premises like the boxer Sugar Ray Leonard in the early 80's. Sugar Ray was a class act. "Oh my god, he was so classy. He
