FALL 2023

“Consider just how powerful it is that in the last year we actually have students in our classrooms who are the third generation Broncos in their families! That’s an awesome legacy!” – President Kevin Beirne

Dear Montini Catholic Family members, I recently sent out a 100 day update on my tenure as President at Montini Catholic High School. While I promise not to do so every 100 days, I felt it important to provide an overview of the important work we’re doing during this transition period.

Bronco Express Fall 2023

As I consider the leadership transition in both our Principal and President offices, I’m humbled not just by being entrusted with this important work, but also in knowing that our school community is so much bigger than any one of us. As you consider the legacy aspects of our Bronco Express edition, I think you’ll also be struck by how far our school community has come since its inception in 1966. Consider just how powerful it is that in the last year we actually have students in our classrooms who are the third generation Broncos in their families! That’s an awesome legacy! These legacy students also serve as a reminder that in our 57th year, we are no longer a “young school.” Hopefully those of you in your late 50s don’t take umbrage at this! By this point in our history, we have such a solid foundation in so many ways. Those of you who have already walked our halls built a strong base of Lasallian ideals, religious and faith formation programs, academic rigor and excellence, unique and special traditions, extracurricular opportunities, athletic success, and countless relationships and memories. You’ll see some of the fruits of your labor in the pages of this issue. As we look to the future, as a “middle-aged school,” we must increasingly focus on the long term financial foundation of our institution. To ensure we have wonderful opportunities for all future legacy students and their classmates, this next phase of our history should be one marked by the building of a financial foundation that will serve us long into the future. That’s what the most successful and enduring Catholic high school communities do as they age. As you consider your own Montini legacy, I hope you’ll consider contributing to our efforts in this area. Thanks for taking the time to look through this edition of Bronco Express, and, as always, thanks for being a part of our school community! Sincerely,

SCHOOL NEWS

WE ARE LASALLIAN Over the summer, Campus Minister Mike Blanchette secured the help of generous Montini host families and invited five students from Colegio de Lasalle Bucaramanga to visit Montini for their own immersion program in the United States. Our guests, who stayed for three weeks, attended regular classes and experienced Bronco life first hand. They got involved with Montini’s service program, visiting Feed My Starving Children and the Ronald McDonald House. They were also able to experience many cultural activities during their stay, including a Cubs game, a trip to Navy Pier in Chicago, and of course, Friday Night Lights at John L. Duffy Memorial Stadium.

Seniors Betsy Beirne and Ella Herrmann in Bucaramanga

Montini students are part of a Lasallian community spanning 80 countries and currently educating over one million students worldwide. This past spring, fourteen adventurous Broncos took advantage of the chance of a lifetime to visit their Lasallian brothers and sisters in Bucaramanga, Colombia. In September, it was our turn to host five of our new Colombian friends here in America!

We are so very grateful that our five host families who were willing and enthusiastic about making this adventure possible by opening their homes and introducing them to the pleasures of living in the United States, and Illinois in particular. One lucky student got to view Chicago from a helicopter! President Kevin Beirne and his family were among the five families who were happy to host since their daughter, Betsy ‘24, was among the 14 students who visited Colombia. “Betsy had a very memorable time in Colombia learning a new culture, Colombian visitors l to r: Emiliano, Javier, Maria, Natalia, Mr. Puentes and Alex at Navy Pier, Chicago

Our Broncos’ week-long, spring break, “cultural immersion trip,” involved everything from spiritual awareness, to service, to exploration and fun! Broncos took part in many cultural activities and even taught their new Colombian friends how to play dodgeball!

It was a unique week that our Broncos will never forget! The trip was Montini’s 6th international trip since their first trip to Nicaragua in 2015.

immersing herself in the schools, retirement homes, and other places in which they served, and enjoying delicious fresh fruit juices and foods that she had never tried before,” said Julie Beirne. “When the opportunity came up for us to provide a similar experience for a student from Colombia, we jumped on it! ” “Natalia is a very bright, curious, studious soul! We each had many talks with her about Colombian culture, politics, foods, and way of life; she, in turn, was so curious about everything that our lives entailed. We learned that Natalia loves philosophy and wants to study medicine. We learned of her unique family . . . continued on page 10

“When we were in Colombia, we could see just how much some families in these countries can struggle,” observed Andrew Sparke ‘26. “What makes me smile is how through this struggle there is still happiness and smiles all around the Llano Grande school. Even when we did not know how to speak each other's languages, or at least knew a little, we were still able to have a fun time and get to meet the kids while making even more friends along the way.”

SCHOOL NEWS plan and execute a service project benefitting a non-profit organization. I was impressed when Rory told me that he was planning to do his Eagle Scout project here at Montini and do landscaping work in the courtyard of De La Salle Hall!" "It is an honor to be selected for Student of the Month," said Rory, a St. Mary of Gostyn graduate, who found an interest in broadcasting and being the designated 'voice of Montini' during his freshman year. "It was nice of those to take the time to recognize me - I am very thankful." Rory's iconic voice lights up Montini hallways and classrooms practically every morning during homeroom announcements with his now expected greeting, "Good Morning, Montini!" An avid history buff, Rory was turned-on to broadcasting at a young age. "I thoroughly enjoyed Robin William’s character (Adrian Cronauer) in 'Good Morning Vietnam.' My favorite scenes are when he is on the radio and I try to give off the same energy that he does."

Gooood morning, Montini! We’re proud to honor Rory O'Connor ‘24* as September Student of the Month enthusiastically nominated by Broadcaster's Club moderator, William Dawes ‘13. “I nominated Rory for his exceptional loyalty as a broadcaster, and for the many extracurricular activities he is involved in," said William, who relies heavily on Rory throughout the year as a four-year member of the Bronco Broadcaster's Club. "He is also a member of the Peer Ministry team, our National Honor Society, French National Honor Society and Chess Club. He is a Eucharistic Minister at school Masses and is a dual-sport athlete in Cross Country (where he is a captain) and Boys Volleyball." William also recognizes the service Rory is committed to outside of Montini. "He is a Life Scout in Boy Scout Troop 89 in Darien and is currently working on the requirements needed to become an Eagle Scout. As an Eagle Scout myself, I know firsthand how intensive and challenging these requirements are. A Scout must show leadership and dedication to his troop and his community, and he must also

His loyalties to the club not only lie in making announcements, he has also taken on the role of managing the broadcasting team to make sure that announcements get made. "I go down to the office every day and make sure that whoever is signed up is present, and if they are not there then I go on." If there is any aspect of the job of broadcaster he is not as thrilled about it would be pronouncing names, which as any broadcaster will admit, can get a little tricky at times. "I have known Rory as a student for the past eight years," said Principal Chris Tiritilli. (Mr. Tiritilli was also Rory's principal at St. Mary of Gostyn) "Rory consistently leads by example. He has demonstrated his willingness to step up and help out in any situation, with and without being asked. Perhaps most importantly, Rory is a student who treats everyone he encounters with respect and kindness. He is able to successfully balance his academic workload with his extra-curricular activities in the Broadcasting Team and his pursuit of Eagle Scout distinction, and does so with a smile on his face and joy in his heart. Congratulations to him on his terrific honor!" Montini is very thankful to Rory and helpers (including dad and mom Pat ‘81 and Michelle Ptak O’Connor ‘88) for the awesome renovation of our DeLa Salle Hall courtyard!

GOLF Boy's Golf is rapidly evolving into a formidable contender on the green thanks to our stellar leadership from captains Anjay Dhir ‘24 and Liam O'Dea ‘26. This season marked a pivotal moment for our team as we unveiled our cutting edge simulator (thank you to the Kolinski Family) for the first time this offseason. The results were nothing short of exceptional. With the use of the advanced technology we saw a team average of 6 shots better than last year. As we bid farewell to three key seniors, Anjay, Tyler Pavlik and Danny Petersen, we have a promise of a strong pipeline of great golfers coming up. We are excited for the next season.

WRESTLING HALL OF FAME Head Football and Wrestling Coach Michael Bukovsky '83 received the "Lifetime Service to Wrestling Award" recognized by the National Wrestling Hall of Fame's Illinois Chapter on October 22nd at their Honors Banquet. "This award acknowledges that his life has been significant and he is leaving behind a legacy that others admire,” said Executive Director Lee Roy Smith. “He has a special place in the heritage of the sport and his legacy is going to be recognized at the National Wrestling Hall of Fame and Museum in Stillwater, Oklahoma." "While Coach Bu's record, the championships and accolades speak for themselves, it is the impact that he has had and continues to have on young men and women that will forever be his legacy," added Brian Casey ‘01, Athletic Director. "On the surface, 8 State Championships, being named "Coach of the Year" and "Man of the Year" are all tremendous achievements, but what is often overlooked is the fact that not one individual has spent more time, energy, effort and determination in helping his wrestlers succeed not only on the wrestling mat, but in all walks of life. Legendary College Basketball Coach John Wooden once said, 'the wins will always be remembered in a history book. But, you'll know you were successful, when 20 years later, your players want to meet up with you, just to hang out'. The line of former Montini Catholic student-athletes that return year after year to see Coach Bu, to introduce their spouses and children to him, to tell old stories, or just simply to catch up continues to amaze me. His positive influence and inspiration in his 35+ year coaching career, has proven to literally be a lifetime of service to not only the sport of wrestling, but to the over 2,000 student-athletes he has coached." In conjunction with the Johnny Always Wins Charity Game on September 15th, the Weiger Family presented their 11th ‘Spirit of 76’ Award to senior Mick Ranquist. Captain Hailey reached 1000 assists which is a huge accomplishment for any setter. Ella Herrmann and Sienna Skarda ‘25 received All Conference this season as they were crucial to the success we had this season. Congratulations to freshman Moira Quirk, Sophie Maquet and Maddie Goetz for their hard work and contributions to the varsity team. DISNEY When we heard that Tyler Pacana ‘15 was working as a full time animator for Disney®, selected from over 2,000 applicants, we were ecstatic, but not the least bit surprised! He has always been a go-getter, destined for great things! We are so honored that he could take a few moments to catch us up on everything he’s been up to and his ‘road to Disney!’

What was your path directly after graduation from Montini?

Montini Catholic Bronco Express

After graduating from Montini, I went to Ontario, Canada to study animation at Sheridan College. In my junior year, I worked on a short film called The Fox and the Pigeon with a group of classmates, and we were lucky enough to win an Annie award for it. That was my first time visiting Los Angeles for the awards show, and our school organized tours for us at Cartoon Network, Warner Brothers and Disney (a fun little glimpse at things to come, I guess).

9

In my senior year, I made an independent thesis short. Since I’m not much of a storyteller, I thought it would be useful to make a short explaining what animators do, and the different techniques of the craft. This is the closest I’ve ever come to having a “viral” video, and it was pretty cool to see such positive reactions to something I put so much time and effort into (it took a whole year just to make this 2-minute short). During my last two years of college, I started an internship at Yowza Animation in Toronto. Yowza is a “vendor studio” - larger companies like Dreamworks and Nickelodeon outsource work to Yowza and similar small vendors for their shows and movies. I was ecstatic to be at Yowza because Warner Brothers contracted us to animate on a reboot of classic Looney Tunes Cartoons shorts and a Netflix adaptation of Dr. Seuss’s Green Eggs and Ham. Fall 2023

The storyboards and designs came directly from Warner Brothers, and we animated the episodes at Yowza. I spent the next 2 years after graduation working on these shows at Yowza, moving up to a lead animator position on the Looney Tunes team.

What led you to Disney? In winter of 2021, Disney announced a trainee program for hand-drawn animators. It was the first time in about a decade that they were bringing new traditional animators to the feature film division (Disney switched completely to CG features after 2011). Considering what a rare opportunity it was, I submitted my portfolio without any real expectation of getting the job - but in spring of 2022 they reached out to offer me one of the five trainee positions. It was a bit of a serendipitous situation, since my international work permit in Canada was expiring and I was running into residency issues due to the pandemic halting immigration. I was sad to leave Yowza and Toronto, but excited and humbled by the opportunity to work at Disney. I moved to Los Angeles and spent the next four months training under the mentorship of Disney 2D animation veterans like Eric Goldberg (respon-

sible for characters like the Genie in Aladdin) and Mark Henn (responsible for Disney’s renaissance princesses like Belle, Ariel, Mulan, and Tiana). Once the training period was over, the five trainees were eligible to work on real productions as apprentice animators. We were certainly in the right place at the right time, since Disney was starting production on an Oswald the Lucky Rabbit cartoon and Once Upon A Studio, a short celebrating the studio’s 100 year anniversary.* I had the chance to animate several classic Disney characters for that short - like Robin Hood, Lady and the Tramp, and Sleeping Beauty. It was a dream project for sure. And most of that animation was done classically (with paper on a lighttable) as opposed to digitally, which was a challenging but rewarding callback to the roots of the craft. Now that I’ve moved from the apprenticeship into a full animator position, I mostly help with Legacy projects like custom 2D animation for

SCHOOL NEWS Disneyland rides and commercials for company partnerships. Even though I’m working at the studio’s feature film branch, the 2D team here is mostly responsible for commercial work right now (considering the features are still CG).

Were there any teachers at Montini who inspired you to achieve?

There are so many teachers and staff members from Montini who helped me towards my career path - I can’t possibly name them all, but I’d be remiss not to try. Miss (Sara) Lhotka and Mr. (Kevin) Beirne (English/ Literature) taught me narrative development and character-building, which are indispensable for character acting (which is the core of animation - we don’t just draw characters, we act through them). Mrs. (Chrissy) McManus (Calculus) and Miss (Colleen) Marks (Physics) always encouraged my drawing, even if it was just silly doodles on the white-board between lessons. Miss (Kathy) Filipiak helped arrange my schedule to get enough art-credits for my college applications. Through Cross Country and Track, (coaches) Eric Brechtel, Doc Mordente and Pete Connelley helped me build a solid work ethic that I still aspire to maintain today. (And please keep Pete in your prayers - he’s recovering from a serious injury right now.) Obviously my art teachers, Miss (Jennifer) Voogd and Mrs. (Wanda) Drabik, were influential and willing to let me practice cartoons in my assignments. And finally - Mr. (Pete) Farina was always there to lend me a hand using and learning art software like Photoshop.

It would be great to have my contract extended to stay at Disney, but I really can’t say where I’ll be next spring or beyond. So far I’ve just been coasting wherever God seems to nudge me, and that hasn’t steered me wrong yet. I’m happy as long as I get to keep animating cartoon characters - whether it be Mickey Mouse, Bugs Bunny, or some obscure cereal mascot. Tyler’s clips can be viewed on his YouTube Channel: @TylerPacana

story of living in both Colombia and Italy for a time. We also learned to convert Fahrenheit to Celsius many times, and that Colombia has much better weather overall than Illinois! But, most notably was that Natalia shared with us her love of cooking. She joined in the kitchen many nights, doing everything from simple tasks of chopping onions to coordinating an entire meal herself that we made in tandem with her mom in Colombia over FaceTime! Our favorite Colombian foods were arepas, fresh fruit juices, arequipe and dulce de leche, and her mom's famous chicken dish.” Campus Minister Blanchette has made it his goal at Montini to provide opportunities for students to see ‘worlds they’ve never seen’ and giving them a chance to explore other cultures and gain a better understanding of life outside their own comfort zones. “It truly is life-changing. I am so glad we were able to go full circle with immersing our students and the students of Colegio de Lasalle in worlds they might not see otherwise.” “This entire trip I’ve grown my knowledge of the Colombian culture and way of life,” said Sam Hemmersmeier 24 upon reflection. “Going to Mass in Colombia made me really re-focus on the force behind all of the beauty, culture, and diversity of our world; it made me appreciate my Catholic education which allowed me experience such an amazing trip. I also realized how widespread generosity is in our world and that no matter where you go there will be people to lend a helping hand and care for you.”

“BRONCO UP!” life, along with my two favorite events: the free throw contest and the high jump,” he said. “I was extremely proud to wear my Montini colors throughout the competition and enjoyed conversing with several people who were familiar with Montini Catholic and the great reputation it holds. Most of my conversations revolved around athletic events, and more times than not, their schools were on the losing end of the games discussed! Go Broncos!”

We’re in awe of our very own Jim Ronan '70 who participated in the Illinois Senior Olympics this past September. Earlier in the summer, with his initial plans of competing in the National Senior Games (Pittsburgh), Jim stopped by De La Salle Hall to grab a Bronco track uniform and a few t-shirts to represent his Broncos at the competition. “I was hoping the Spirits of 1970 would increase my speed,” he said. Unfortunately, God had other plans and an injury prevented Jim from being able to compete in the national games. In true Bronco fashion, that didn’t slow him down - Jim chose to recalibrate and compete in the Illinois Senior Olympics instead. He filled us in on the details.

“Since I still couldn’t run, I decided to compete in the ‘throw’ for the first time in my

“I will be forever grateful to my four Montini Bronco coaches: Coaches Kavanaugh, Pauls, Mackey, and Hudik (photo above) for the positive impact they had on my life. I came to Montini in 1966 with very limited athletic experience and left four years later a motivated, knowledgeable, competitive athlete. I enjoyed a 34 year teaching career and coached sixth grade basketball and track eight of those years. My wife and I celebrated our 40th anniversary this summer, and have raised three responsible adult children. I have little doubt that the seeds of my success were planted in the athletics and classrooms of MCHS!” At the Illinois Senior Olympics Jim won gold in the free throw contest making 22 out of 25 and in the high jump with a jump of 3'10." “I took a bronze in the javelin throw, and did not place in the shot or discus. I enjoyed the throws, and I might have a future with the javelin! Who says, "You can't teach an old dog a new trick!" I truly believe healthy competition is good for the mind, body and soul, and I look forward to continuing my participation in these type of events. As always, "Bronco Up!"

GO BRONCOS! Congratulations to more inspiring Broncos, classmates, known to their friends and family as Team '78 - Anthony Cesaretti, Jim Stoffel, Larry Brady and Brian Gilmartin for their recent accomplishments in the sport of triathlon. For several years now, this group of friends from our Bronco Class of 1978 have been traveling all over the country and internationally for triathlon competitions. Anthony recently completed the IRONMAN in Madison, WI. Jim Stoffel just returned from Pontevedra, Spain as part of Team USA for the 2023 World Triathlon Age-Group Championships. With their 50 year reunion just around the corner, we wish them well as they continue to keep pushing themselves in this unique endurance sport of swimming, cycling and running. “Go Team '78!"

Dave Irion’88 was among the 47,000 participants on October 8th who ran the 2023 Bank of America Chicago Marathon.

“The Illinois Senior Olympics is held every year for competitors age 50 and above. Competition is divided into five year increments, with a variety of sports to choose from. Beginning in 2024 they will officially be called the Illinois Senior Games. Every even numbered year, state competition is used as a national qualifying event for the National Senior Games which are held every odd numbered year. This Summer 2023 there were over 11,600 athletes, ages 50 and above, who competed in Pittsburgh at the National Senior Games. It was extremely impressive!”

“Wearing the "Maroon, Gold and White" also brought back a flood of memories from 57 years ago, starting with freshman football, and then onward through my football, basketball, track and wrestling days,” Jim remembers. “Former coaches, teammates, classmates and teachers crossed my mind, heart and spirit while enjoying the competition in Springfield.”
