On behalf of the Monticello Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce, Board of Directors, and Watermelon Festival Committee welcome to the 70th Anniversary of the Monticello Watermelon Festival.

A summertime tradition in Monticello since 1950, the Watermelon Festival brings out the local community, visitors and the South in everyone. While the COVID-19 pandemic took a slice out of our summer event in 2020, we are back in 2021 with the support of our amazing sponsors, advertisers and volunteers.

From pageants to parades, bed races and barbeque, this event offers small town fun for the entire family. For those who would rather not exert themselves in the summer heat, we’re offering delicious food, street dancing and of course sweet slices of watermelon.

Our theme for this year is “Loving the Local Life,” and we are! Plan to come on down and sit a spell as we celebrate summer with the best festival ever. Hope to see you soon!

Congratulations to the winners of the new winners of the 2021 Baby Photo Contest! The folks of Jefferson County continue to support this popular event each year and share their beautiful children with all of us. The excitement begins to build as soon as the first contestant photos appear in the downtown storefront windows. This year they will be displayed in 3 locations, Two Sisters New Beginnings, Victoria’s Boutique and Soulshine Vintage. Thank you for allowing us to use your storefront windows.

There are 7 age categories, ranging from newborn to 5 years old, with a boy and girl winner selected for each category. An overall theme category can be entered for those who go all out with a watermelon themed photo, The winners will be announced at the kickoff dinner on Friday, June 11th, where everyone gets to enjoy a good meal and some great entertainment. Thank you to all hose who participate to make this event successful each year.

What an amazing selection of artwork we received this year for our Program Cover contest. This contest is open to all children up to thirteen years old and living in Jefferson County. Thank you to all who participated and congratulations to our winners.

The first place winner will receive $50 cash from Capital City Bank and a t-shirt. Second and third place winners will receive t-shirts. Prizes will be presented at the Chamber Kick-Off Dinner on June 7th at 5:00 pm at the Monticello Opera House.

Albree Shiver

reigning 2019-2021 watermelon queen Albree is the nineteen-year-old daughter of Loomis & Amy Shiver.

Albree has enjoyed her two years as Miss Watermelon Queen, it has been an honor representing Jefferson County! After attending all the events and parades and seeing all the children smile has made a great end to her senior year and a memorial beginning to the start of her freshman year at college. The memories that were made were special but the best part of being Queen is having my younger sister by my side to share it with. I want to thank everyone who made this dream possible.

Albree attends college at North Florida College and plans to transfer to Middle Georgia University during the fall. She plans to pursue a degree in Criminal Justice. Albree wants the next Watermelon Queen to know that this is a very rewarding experience but most of all the memories and friendships that you will make will last a life time.

reigning 2019-2021 TEEN watermelon queen The 2019 and 2020 Teen Miss Watermelon Queen is Addison Grace Shiver. Addison is the 16 year old daughter of Loomis and Amy Shiver of Perry Fl. Addison enjoyed her time as the Teen Miss Watermelon Queen.

She loved riding in parades, taking pictures and meeting new people.

She enjoyed going the Watermelon Festival, especially when she got to wrap rubber bands around a watermelon until it exploded! Addison will be entering her senior year at Aucilla Christian Academy, where she is the Varsity Cheer Captain and Beta Club President. Addison would like to tell the next Teen Miss Watermelon Queen to enjoy her reign as queen. Take as many pictures as you can, go to all of the town events, and wear your crown as much as possible. Your time as the Teen Miss Watermelon Queen goes by quickly so make sure to enjoy every minute of it.

The Jefferson County Watermelon Festival is pleased to announce that the 2021 Watermelon Baby to Princess/Prince pageant will be held on Saturday, June 5th at 10 AM at the Monticello Opera House.

The age divisions are: 2-3 years old; 4-6 years old; 7-9 years old; and 10-12 years old. Each girl/boy will compete in the formal wear division.

Teams can claim the top prize if they can run the fastest, roll a watermelon from point A to point B then be the first to push the bed across the finish line. Sign up and give your rider the one on the bed for the ride of a lifetime! This is not for the faint at heart!

Local businesses, youth groups, civic clubs, churches and first responders among other, will build an decorate a bed for bragging rights for their prowess on the streets of Monticello. Each team will consist of two pushers and one rider and a homemade bed. Awards for fastest team and for Best Dressed Bed will be given out. The Monticello Woman’s Club is kicking off the 70th Anniversary of the Monticello Watermelon Festival with our annual Luncheon and Fashion Show!

The stage is set for Thursday, June 17, 2021 at the Historic Monticello Opera House. Doors open at 11:00 am with lunch served at Noon.

Tickets are $15.00 and available at the Chamber or on the festival website. Tickets are limited, so grab your favorite fashionista for some great food, friendship and head turning styles presented by Vicki McLuckie of the Luckie Pearl and Victoria Randle of Victoria’s Boutique both in Downtown Monticello.

Mainstream Band GA (MSB) is a dynamic group from South Georgia that plays all your favorite hits with high energy and always delivers a professional show! Featuring former members from other Music Garden Bands and national acts, MSB seamlessly transitions between a wide variety of genres and has something for every occasion.

Mainstream Band GA has not only opened for national acts such as Blake Shelton and Montgomery Gentry, but has also headlined festivals such as The Ashburn/Turney County Fire Ant Festival and the

Georgia Peanut Festival in Sylvester, GA. From 2012-2013, MSB was under contract to play all of the Auburn University home football games for the alumni at Jordan/Hare Stadium and played all the Florida State University football home games for the alumni in 2011.

Most recently, Mainstream Band GA has had the pleasure of playing the Gulf Shores National Shrimp Festival, Valdosta State University National Championship Rally, Mystics of Pleasure Mardi Gras Ball in Orange Beach, AL along with dozens of weddings and local chamber events!

Kids show

Welcome to the 23rd year for children’s theater at the Watermelon Festival in the historic, air-conditioned Monticello Opera House.

Last year’s cast of The Adventures of Lucas the Human performed an original show written by MadCo students, Benjamin Britton and Abigail Boyd. Due to COVID-19 and the cancellation of the Watermelon Festival, MadCo decided the “show must go on” and performed outside in the heat of July. We enjoyed performing to sold out crowds who were thrilled to see live theater again, braving rain and mosquitos.

Barnard, Don’t Trash Your Mother Earth. If it sounds familiar, this show was first produced in 2013. But the 2021 version is different! New actors, new characters, new songs and new choreography! It’s like a show you’ve never seen before! It takes you on a wild romp through a mystical land where everyone learns to care about the Earth and all its wonders!

For the 15th year in a row, the Monticello Acting & Dance Co., directed by Melanie Mays, performs for audiences of all ages. Children, teens and parents participate in the summer theater program and give generously of their time not only onstage, but behind the scenes as well. And while the cast rehearses, in the process, they also learn to sing, dance and act!

The 2021 Kiwanis 5K Melon Run will take place on Saturday, June 19th at 8:15 AM. Registration will be located at the First United Methodist Church and will begin at 7 AM. Pre-registration is available through the Monticello Chamber of Commerce (Monticellowatermelonfestival.com), Gulf Winds Track Club (www.gulfwinds.org) or through Active.com (www.active.com).

2021 watermelon parade grand marshal

The honorary title of Parade Grand Marshal is presented to a resident of Jefferson County who has exhibited exceptional leadership, community service, civic involvement and public service within the County. The Watermelon Festival Committee is proud to recognize the 1989 Watermelon Queen, Angela Gray as the 2021 Parade Grand Marshall.

Angela Gray is a dedicated public servant who strives to serve the people of Jefferson County with selfless devotion. In 2020 Ms. Gray stepped up, outside the scope of her normal duties as the Jefferson County Property Appraiser, to spearhead the CARES Act COVID-19 funding for the County. During this unprecedented time, the fund provided approximately $2,658,740.00 for essential public health, safety and critical economic relief for local businesses and non-profits within Jefferson County.

From pageants, to bed races and rodeos, Ms. Gray has been a Watermelon Festival volunteer for many years. She has been recognized as Rotarian of the Year and served as Rotary Club President. In addition to her involvement with the Jefferson County School District, Ms. Gray helped bring Junior Achievement to Jefferson Summerset.

Jefferson Arts Gallery celebrates Summer with our annual summer member show “The Living is Easy“. All Members of Jefferson Arts are invited to show and sell their creations. The Show opens Saturday June 12 from 2 until 4 PM. The show will be on display through Saturday August 14. Regular Gallery hours are Wednesdays and Saturdays from 10 AM until 2 PM. 113th Annual antique car show Craig McCollum, Chair

Once again, the Tallahassee Region of the Antique Automobile Club of America will be presenting an open car show for everyone to enjoy.

This show is open to all types of vehicles original restored or modified, including antiques, classics, customs, street rods, late models, trucks and motorcycles. Some of these may be driven in the parade before being parked in The First Bank parking lot for the show. An awards ceremony and raffle for cash prizes will start at 12:00 PM.
