Report of Annual Giving 2021-2022

Montgomery School is a shining example of the spirit of giving and of the culture of philanthropy. As an independent school, we, along with our peers across the nation, rely on the support and generosity of our community. Our community, composed of parents, present and past, alumni, grandparents, friends, and business partners, stands together in philanthropy to make our school the most exceptional version of itself.

The Montgomery Fund, our school’s annual fund, is at the heart of our philanthropic efforts.

The unrestricted funds received through the Montgomery Fund allow us to give financial support in the areas most necessary from the arts to athletics to technology and facility maintenance. The Montgomery Fund is truly how we provide our students with the unparalleled experience and education at Montgomery.

The Montgomery Fund also helps us cultivate our school’s most important resource – our teachers. By providing resources for professional development, classroom necessities, and competitive salaries we are able to attract and retain the most talented teachers.

In addition to the Montgomery Fund, our community supports our students by giving at the golf outing and annual benefit and through restricted funds from Pennsylvania’s Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC). These additional gifts showcase our community’s incredible power of giving.

This Annual Report is a tangible example of our gratitude to every member of our community who has given generously of their time, talents, and treasure this past fiscal year. Thank you for making Montgomery School a priority in your philanthropic giving and we look forward to many successful years ahead!

Dear Parents and Friends of Montgomery School

As I reflect on the 2021-2022 school year there is so much to be thankful for and so many of those reasons are contained in the pages of this report. Last year’s theme was one of connection – reconnecting after time apart, connecting with new families and friends, and remembering that the connections that pulse through the heart of the Montgomery School community are lifelong connections we will always treasure.

I am pleased to share the 2021-2022 Report of Annual Giving with you. As you read through this report you will see the many ways that our community strengthened connections through gifts, attendance at special events and outings, volunteer time, and more. My connection with each of you comes from a place of deep gratitude. It is through the many ways that you give to Montgomery, our students, and our faculty and staff that we are able to fully deliver on our mission to ignite each child’s love of learning and foster their individual talents during the most formative years in order to prepare them for future success.

In the following pages you will see the many members of our community who impact our school. You will also hear personal stories of connection to Montgomery School. From board members, to alumni, to past parents and current students, the connections are undeniable and the power of giving in all of its forms is transformational. I am thrilled to share our successes from this past fiscal year and look forward to imagining the limitless possibilities as we move forward.

Thank you so much for all that you do for our community!

With deepest gratitude,

Reflections from Dylan Bond ’23

When you first came to Montgomery School, what were some of the day-to-day things you experienced that were different?

I came to Montgomery School in the fourth grade, after attending public school where the classes were pretty big. The smaller environment at Montgomery made for a much more interactive and positive experience. I began to talk more, I found I could open up more easily, and I became much more outgoing. Hands-on learning is also very important here, which had a very helpful effect on my overall educational experience. I was able to really become involved in the topics we were studying.

What types of activities have you been involved in throughout your time at Montgomery and how have these experiences helped you learn more about yourself?

I have played on the baseball and soccer teams and was also involved in the school musical. The sports community at Montgomery is extremely close-knit. The coaches care about each member of the team, whether it’s their first time playing the sport or if they have been playing for years. They are super-helpful and always willing to go the extra mile to work on skills or provide additional support. Traveling to different schools and spending time on the bus with teammates also fostered a sense of togetherness.

Tell me about your relationship with the teachers and staff at Montgomery.

The teachers here are very supportive and always willing to reach out personally to see if you need help. Everyone here is so kind and extremely helpful. During the pandemic, virtual learning didn’t work well for me. I wasn’t doing as well as I wanted to do, and my grades were not as good as they usually were. When we returned to school, my teachers were all super-helpful. They supported me throughout the year and things turned around – my grades came up and I was much happier.

In sixth grade, I decided I really wanted to be Head of School for the day. I wanted to learn what went on inside the Farmhouse and how things work behind the scenes here at Montgomery. When I was finally able to do this, it was a great experience. I really enjoyed that day.

How has your time at Montgomery shaped your life views?

Attending Montgomery has made me think and view things in a much more positive way. I find I now look at most things with a positive perspective. I don’t think “I have to go to soccer practice today.” Instead, I think, “I get to go to soccer today at this amazing school.”

If one of your friends or relatives were thinking about coming to Montgomery School, what advice would you give to them?

I would encourage them to put themselves out there from the very beginning and get involved with everything that interests them. There is so much to do here. I would tell them to appreciate everything while they’re here. The time goes by fast but there’s so much to enjoy along the way.

Reflection from Christine Whaley

Alumni Parent ’21 and Member, Board of Trustees

teacher. Some of Harry’s favorite experiences were competing in Greek & Roman games, taking creek walks in science class, writing a book in fifth grade and participating in chapel presentations. When he reached Middle School, he was well-prepared for academic challenges and learned how to advocate for himself.

Montgomery fostered his love of learning by encouraging him to think critically and solve problems creatively. Montgomery teachers educate students on how to think, not what to think. They actively encourage discussion and respectful debate. To this day, Harry credits these teachers for making the transition to high school seamless.

My husband Harry and I began looking at independent schools when our son Harry was in pre-school. We wanted to find a school with small class sizes that valued the importance of helping each child reach their potential. When we first visited Montgomery School, we quickly realized the benefits of a pre-kindergarten through eighth grade program. During our visit, we saw happy and engaged children, dedicated teachers, rain boots lined up outside of the science classroom and involved parents on campus. The focus on developing each child in mind and body while also supporting strong character development was evident. We loved the chapel program and could see the strength of the community. Harry thrived at Montgomery. The school became his home away from home. He had a remarkable academic experience due to the extraordinary teachers he had along the way. The Lower School does an amazing job matching each student with the most suitable

Throughout our nine years at Montgomery, the teachers had a singular goal - to support each student to be their best academically, socially and emotionally. Whether through a call from a teacher or advisor, a quick conversation after chapel, or parent-teacher conferences, it was apparent that educating him was a true partnership. It wasn’t surprising to receive a weekly update on class activities from a teacher or an email with an attached photo capturing students in a fun activity during that day. The faculty and staff were just as excited as we were to see Harry succeed.

Montgomery’s community embraced Harry and gave him the confidence to try new activities and investigate different interests. Early on, he took piano lessons after school and was provided the opportunity to play in a band with his classmates during chapel. In Middle School, he decided to try out for the school musical. He was excited to have lead roles in Bye Bye Birdie in sixth grade and Footloose in seventh grade. This fueled his ongoing love of musical theatre, which Harry continues to enjoy

WHY I GIVE

at The Hill School. He was also active in sports at Montgomery and surprised us by deciding to join the cross country team, a sport he had never tried before. The older students were great mentors, and in seventh and eighth grade, he became a captain of the team. Harry also continued to play lacrosse, a sport he loved since first grade. He now runs cross country and plays on the lacrosse team in high school. One of his favorite aspects of Montgomery sports was mentoring younger students. Harry felt he had such great role-models and wanted to pay it forward.

In addition to preparing students academically for high school, character development is woven into the fabric of a Montgomery education. Students become prepared to be leaders in both the classroom and on the athletic fields. A Montgomery education is so much more than academics. The goal of all faculty and staff is to develop the whole child in mind and body, while also teaching and modeling Veritas, Pietas, Caritas – truth, loyalty and compassion. Social and emotional development occur through relationships built around the shared lunch tables during family-style meals, activities with buddies throughout each grade level, and presenting class chapels from a young age. These experiences develop children who are confident in who they are, supportive and thoughtful toward others and articulate in expressing their views.

Within the Montgomery culture there is a clear expectation of respect for oneself and those around you. This is emphasized in chapel as well as in the classroom. Academic excellence means nothing if you don’t have integrity in all that you do. This is such an important lesson. Service to others is equally important and the students

learn this at an early age by coordinating Thanksgiving food drives, dressing in pink for breast cancer awareness, collecting Halloween candy for military troops and participating in hands-on service projects that support various organizations.

One of the aspects I loved about Montgomery was the ability for parents to be involved within the classroom as well as throughout the school. Whenever there was an event at Montgomery, I signed up to help. I felt blessed to have the opportunity to have that special lens into Harry’s day. I started out helping with classroom activities and attending MSCA meetings, and got to know other parents across the community by volunteering for Fall Fun Day and the Annual Benefit. Early on, I also served on the Enrollment Committee as a nontrustee member. I loved the strategic nature of the committee as we looked for ways to further the mission of the school and showcase Montgomery to the broader community. In 2014, I had the privilege of joining the Board of Trustees and am currently serving my ninth and final year on the Board.

Montgomery has given our family so much that Harry and I are honored to help the school in whatever way we are able. We want every child to have access to a Montgomery education. In order to accomplish this goal, it’s important to provide financial support as well as the gifts of time and talent. Tuition dollars alone do not cover all the unique offerings and opportunities that make Montgomery the special place that it is. It is our honor to do what we can to make sure that Montgomery continues to positively impact the lives of countless more children and families into the future.

foundation, all while making learning enriching and fun. A love of learning is instilled in our students right from the start and continues throughout their years here. When students leave Montgomery, they are prepared to take on anything their future holds.

Ihave worked in several schools throughout my 26-year career as an educator and I am the mother of three children. This is my fifth year of teaching at Montgomery School, and my experience here is like nothing else I’ve ever encountered. I can honestly say that I love my job and am happy to be here each day. I have never taught anywhere where I feel so appreciated by my superiors, colleagues, parents and of course, my sweet PreK students! I felt a connection with the Montgomery community since the day I set foot on campus, and I feel fortunate to be a part of such a special place.

Montgomery’s philosophy is a huge part of why I am so happy and fulfilled in my position as a PreK teacher. The experiences we can provide to our students allow them to begin their early childhood years building a strong educational

I believe that my PreK students and their parents are a valuable part of Montgomery’s future. Starting them out with a positive experience is extremely important to me. My hope is that each year the new children and their families fall in love with the school in the same way I have. I have enjoyed watching students who began their time here with me flourish as the years go by. It is a beautiful thing – something I look forward to year after year!

Giving to the annual fund has been important to me since the time I arrived. As an educator here, I believe contributing is essential to being a part of this community and allowing for the school to continue to be a success. Both personally and professionally, I wish to see Montgomery continue to grow and thrive. The school provides an incredible and lasting educational experience from PreK through eighth grade, and I am confident all members of our community are vital in making that happen. Every little bit makes a difference. The Montgomery experience is truly amazing. This is what makes me feel really good, as well as proud, to contribute what I can each year.

my creativity and outside-of-the-box thinking. From taking creek walks with Mrs. Dattilo to building leprechaun traps with Mrs. Rex, we were constantly taught to be curious and creative. These skills are constantly tested and applied in my everyday life as an engineer. Field trips also provided me with a broader perspective of the world, opening my eyes to different time periods, like at the Renaissance fair, and new cultures in Canada. This is how I learned to think of the broader impact I could have in the world and the people in it.

After graduating from Montgomery School, I attended The Baldwin School in Bryn Mawr. In high school, I further developed my interests in math, science, and art, which led me to discover engineering as a potential career path. Combining my strengths in engineering disciplines with my family’s background in medicine, I decided to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Engineering at the Rochester Institute of Technology. I am currently finishing this degree along with my Master’s in Science, Technology, and Public Policy. My interests lie in Biopharmaceutical Research & Development, specifically Oncology Drug Discovery. I am seeking a PhD position in Experimental Cancer Therapeutics postgraduation from RIT.

My time at Montgomery set the foundation for my academic and professional skills utilized throughout high school and college. When I arrived in high school, I was more than prepared to tackle the increasingly difficult subjects and assignments, not only because of Montgomery’s academic preparation but also the resilience and determination I learned at Montgomery. No challenge was too tough for me to handle, and I was always capable of accomplishing any goal I put my mind to. Montgomery encouraged

Ultimately, my successes until now would not have been possible without the support network I gained at Montgomery and have carried with me throughout the years. My closest friends from Montgomery’s Lower School are still my best friends. I will never forget the many memories we have shared over the years; from playing makebelieve games together in Afternoons with Mrs. Walton to celebrating our high school graduations together at a joint party, even though we all graduated from different schools. These friends are my rocks in life, constant and reassuring. We have supported each other during all of life’s transitions, twists, and turns, celebrating each other’s wins and consoling each other during the losses. We walk together every step of the way. For them, I will always be grateful to Montgomery.

As such, I am a proud alumnus of Montgomery School, and I want to ensure that future generations are given the same opportunities for connection, learning, and growth that I was able to experience. Over the past eight years, I have tried to make the most of every opportunity to give back to Montgomery because of all of the possibilities it has given me. My teachers and friends will forever hold a piece of my heart, and I will always think of Montgomery as home.

CORPORATE GIVING

Giving & Growth

Every student and faculty and staff member benefits from the incredible generosity of our donors. Your gifts have made an impact in the classroom, across our campus, in our science and technology labs, in the art and music studios, and on the playing fields. A stroll across campus presents endless opportunities to see your gifts in action. These are just a few ways that your gifts have enhanced the lives of our students!

New Smartboard Technology

Over the summer our classrooms received a huge upgrade with new smartboard installations. A focal point for classroom learning and collaboration, the new smartboard technology is transforming the ways that our teachers can share information and that our students can gain knowledge and work with others across the globe!

New Scoreboard for the Gym

One of the most central, visible, and well-used spaces on campus is our gym! It’s home for our athletic teams and a gathering place for families and students within the Montgomery community and beyond. At the beginning of the school year we were fortunate enough to have a new scoreboard installed that will show that we are here to win!

Completion and Naming of the Outdoor Classroom

Our educators believe children should be outside often and with purpose. The natural world is our toolbox and boots are our required classroom attire. Many of our science programs focus on environmental sustainability and use Pickering Creek as a lab. Recent gifts have allowed us to install a permanent outdoor classroom at Pickering Creek. Named Tir na Nog, this classroom continually proves to be a favorite learning spot for all of our students and connects our curriculum to the beauty of nature surrounding us.

iPads for the Arts and Music Programs

Our technology department and computer lab received a necessary update with the addition of new Chromebooks and new iPads. These new laptops replaced outdated equipment and allowed us to remove fixed workstations to create a more fluid and effective maker space in the tech lab. The new iPads replaced current outdated models and additional new iPads are being used in expanding the Lower School and Middle School music curriculum to include music composition and video creation and editing.

Beekeeping Program

Montgomery School recently launched a beekeeping program designed to encourage our students to become involved in beekeeping and to educate and promulgate information to our students and their families about beekeeping and the valuable role of honeybees and other pollinators in nature and in agriculture. During the summer of 2021 two beehives were installed in the meadow of our campus. Since then our science department has worked closely to develop a rich curriculum focused on the role of bees in our ecosystem, the bee life cycle, body structure, environmental dangers, and more and to actively engage students through a beekeeping club. The Middle School will be offering an Environmental Club elective that will center around bees, beekeeping, and the pollination process around bees. A school-wide rollout of bees and beekeeping topics will be built into the K-8 science curriculum.

MONTGOMERY SCHOOL

Thank You

We would like to express deep gratitude to the many parents, grandparents, and friends who give of their time and of their talents throughout the school year. From volunteering to beautify our campus, to creating lifelong memories for our students through Fall Fun Day or Trick or Trunk, or to

recognizing and celebrating the tireless work of our teachers through Teacher Appreciation Week, our army of volunteers make the Montgomery experience magical. Thank you for giving of yourselves for our students, our faculty and staff, our community, and our school.

You embody the spirit of Montgomery School and we are deeply grateful.
