MONTGOMERY REGIONAL CHAMBER

Drawing on years of leadership experience and a deep well of hometown pride, The Montgomery Regional Chamber’s 2026 Chairman Robert Birmingham plans to follow in the footsteps of his predecessors to continue making significant strides toward the River Region’s bright future.
Robert Birmingham grew up in Montgomery. He went to college here. He took a job with Regions Bank (then First Alabama Bank) right out of college, and he’s never left. He raised his family here, and on Sunday mornings, you’ll likely find him playing guitar in the band of St. James Church, the house of worship he’s attended since he was a child.
Montgomery is Birmingham’s home in every sense of the word, and he has thrived here. Now, as Chamber Chairman, he’s harnessing the role to help the entire River Region thrive, too. “The Chamber is dedicated to job creation, job preparation, and job preservation –it’s about positive economic growth that’s good for everyone, so I’m thrilled to be part of creating the positive economic outcomes that enhance the quality of life in my hometown,” he says. “This is my home, so nothing makes me happier than contributing to its continued progress and prosperity.” While the chance to steer the Chamber’s efforts excites Birmingham, it’s not his first time behind the wheel.
As Executive Vice President and Montgomery Market Executive for Regions Bank, Birmingham leads a huge team and oversees the bank’s interactions and collaborations with local leadership and the community. “Regions Bank traces its roots back to Montgomery, and I’m proud to represent our associates in this market,” he says. “We financially support and volunteer with numerous community related activities, and my role is to foster and guide that effort.” And this work is in addition to his duties as head of the Regions Private Wealth Management.
After the Montgomery native graduated from Huntingdon College in 1987, he joined First Alabama Bank. “When I finished school, I was offered a position, and my career has grown from there,” he says. Birmingham later attended Jones School of Law graduating in 1993.
In almost 40 years with the bank, Birmingham has witnessed many changes and evolutions in banking, and nothing has shaken his resolve that he made the right choice decades ago. “I’m so glad I took that first job,” he says. “Regions is a great company and cares about the communities we serve. It’s always had great leadership, and I’ve worked with a lot of talented and dedicated service-oriented people in my career.”
Today, Birmingham most enjoys providing common-sense financial solutions to meet the financial goals of bank clients, including people and businesses ranging from small operations to major employers. “It’s rewarding when we can serve clients helping with their financial needs to reach financial goals,” he says. “I never get tired of that.”
In planning his goals as Chairman and looking for the areas where he believes he can make the most impact, Birmingham first took stock of the present, noting the importance of maintaining current positive momentum. “The last several years in Montgomery’s economic development arena have shown great promise as the result of strong, strategic efforts, so keeping our foot on the gas there is at the top of my list,” he says. He pointed to major scores for the region, including recent investments, expansions, and opening announcements from META, HMMA, Amazon, FedEx, Diageo, and more.
Birmingham also recognizes that bringing new industry here won’t happen without a well-educated and prepared workforce. Education, training, recruitment, and retention remain priorities too.
“We must stay focused on workforce development, and that includes education, starting before kindergarten and progressing through post-secondary education while supporting the existing workforce through continued training,” he says. “That’s the way to drive real economic opportunities in the River Region.”

“The Chamber acts as the catalyst for education, job creation, and economic development, and all these things work together and build on each other.”
Birmingham brings a keen awareness of key relationships. The alliance between our military and business community is essential. Over so many years the chamber has been effective in maintaining and increasing close ties with Maxwell–Gunter AFB. The military has been part of the fabric of my hometown for my whole life – we take great pride in that history. The work of the Chamber will remain essential because our military partners are such a vital part of our regional economic framework and success.
And helping others understand the value he sees in his hometown motivates Birmingham as well; supporting the Chamber’s continued promotion of Montgomery as a vibrant tourism destination. “The work led by the Chamber relating to tourism has both garnered and grown tremendous positive visibility across the state and nation, and I love to see our rich history keep getting the attention it deserves,” he says.
Birmingham stresses the broad reach of the Chamber’s advocacy and uses that message to encourage every River Region business to get involved. “The Chamber does so many things, but connecting the business community is key among them,” he says. “Every business here plays a part in creating positive outcomes, so every business should bring its voice and experience to the Chamber table. We want to hear and benefit from all these perspectives to meet the challenges and opportunities we face together.”
Birmingham expresses his desire for his time as Chairman to be guided by one of them – bolstering the momentum and Chamber’s momentum to continue to grow and strengthen partnerships. The Chamber is a powerful catalyst for education, job creation, and economic development – leading our area to growth and opportunity.

While Robert Birmingham’s responsibilities at Regions Bank and now at the Chamber as well, keep his calendar full, he still makes time for family, hobbies, and giving back to his community. He’s currently serving on the boards of the Baptist Hospital Foundation and The Alabama Shakespeare Festival. As part of his bank duties, he teaches financial literacy classes to students in both elementary and high school and finds interacting with kids energizing. “I really enjoy getting into the classroom with them,” he says. “They’re interested and ask some good questions, and sometimes, some surprising ones.”
A lifelong interest in music shows whenever he’s strumming his guitar, and while he likes playing golf, he admits, it’s not his strong suit. “It’s fun, but I’m not very good,” he says. And when he’s not at work, volunteering or pursuing pastimes, he’s at home with his wife, Jeannine, CEO of The Alabama Society of CPAs, with whom he raised their grown son and daughter.
Chamber Chairman Robert Birmingham shares the best business advice he’s ever received. “Listen more than you speak - don’t approach any challenge from the perspective of getting only what you want. Weigh all the concerns and expectations and find a solution that is best for everyone at the table.”
