It was a packed house at the First Methodist Church inConroethispastSaturday as the Conroe Symphony Orchestra(CSO)begantheir 28th Season, 2025-2026, with everyone awaiting the musicthatoncegraced19th century royal courts and grand Viennese ballrooms with magical nights of wondrous music and incredible dancing that would yield memories for a lifetime. CSOPresidentBill Thompson welcomed all who attended ‘Shall We Dance?’the orchestra’s first concert of the new season, featuring big names such as Strauss andTchaikovsky, as well as Latin influenced selections and other recognizable music that rangedfromover120years, evenupuntilrecentmodern times For the ballroom dancers in the house, it was spine-tingling no doubt sparking urges to dance in the aisles, and for the rest, they were eagerly remembering listening instances, from cartoons watched as kids, to the dance floors of

the Disco era. For conductor Gary Liebst, back in his tuxedo tailcoat for this one, he relished the moments on stage in leading his orchestralplayersinbringingtolife to music dating from nearly 160yearsago.

Theeveningwasfilled with a musical salad of tango opera ballet and modern dance that had the audience enthralled awaiting the next treasure, and the CSO did not disappoint in their performance.

“It was an incredible performance of the music from Swan Lake and Sleeping Beauty,” said Liebst. “Tchaikovsky is one ofmyfavorites.”

Conductor Liebst started the concert off with the ‘Beautiful Blue Danube Waltz,’by Johan Strauss II, whichisobviouslythemost famouswaltzeverwrittenin 1866. Just the hint of the introductionwiththeviolins and horns, gives rise to that recognizable waltz theme leadbythecellosandhorns, anddon’tforgettheharp. To hearitplayedliveisquitethe treat, bringing a little bit of

Charlie, and beginning to lay the initial cornerstones of Kirk’s Legacy which is going to be big. There was praise for President Donald Trump, and his leadership; to take a Nation that less thanayearagowaslost,and now has the leadership to Make it Great Again, and rise to heights never before seenorthoughtof.

It was fun to see the orchestra really enjoy themselves in playing Bee Gees tunes commissioned for the film. ‘StayingAlive,’was special to hear with some audience memberssinging.

This week’s Veteran is ChrisFilley whoservedin the U S Marine Corps from2002-2017.Chrisdid not have parents when he wasgrowingup,insteadhe was in the foster system untilheagedout. Thatfact alone would have discouraged many from a military life, but Filley’s joining of The Corps and his basic training in San Diego, California, gave him a growing realization of what it means to have a family Chris attended artilleryschoolatFortSill, Oklahoma, and was O deployedtoAfghanistanin 2003-2004 as a Field Artillery Cannoneer, serving with the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit, Battalion Landing Team, 1st Battalion, 6th Marines.
