Business Spotlight Karma’s Closet Shop Locally and Eco-Friendly by Katelyn Kelleher “What goes around comes around” is the company motto of newlyopened Karma’s Closet in Newington, and for owners Deanna Reney and Joely Chomko, that means giving back to their hometown. At the grand opening of Newington’s only consignment shop this Saturday, Dec. 15, all items at Karma’s Closet will be 10 percent off. An additional 10 percent of the sale price will be donated to the Newington Food Bank. “Because we’re from Newington, we’re trying to do local stuff for Newington,” Chomko said. “We wanted to be able to give
back locally.” Reney, a Newington native, added being able to start a business in the town she grew up in “is really, really cool.” In the three weeks the shop has been open, locals have shown their appreciation. Consignment shoppers who previously had to travel out of town were excited to be able to shop at Karma’s Closet, Reney said, and they’re already seeing the ripple effect from word of mouth. “The first people that saw us in [The Rare Reminder] came in and know us and then people now come in and say, ‘Well my friend sent me here,’” she said.

Karma’s Closet accepts and sells items for every age group and price range, for men and women, plus sizes and for the home. The only items Karma’s Closet does not accept, until space allows, are children’s and maternity clothing. A 50/50 split is the rate for all items. “We try to carry less expensive things, like Forever 21 and even great things come from Target and Wal Mart too, to we have a Burberry suit, we have a Hugo Boss suit, we have Coach purses that have to be locked up and china that has to be in showcases and Tiffany and Lia Sophia,” Reney said. “We have a little bit of everything.” “We even have real furs,” Chomko added. Unlike many consignment shops, Karma’s Closet doesn’t limit itself to any particular brands or labels, so you may find something you can’t get anywhere else around here. Sellers have brought in boots from Italy, artwork from Bermuda, pashminas from France and ceramics from Poland, for example. If customers are looking for a particular item, they can post on the store’s Facebook page, www.facebook.com/karmasclosetct,
and the store will start a wish list. They’ve already gotten several requests for Michael Kors handbags. Right now furniture is on the most wanted list for Reney and Chomko, as their inventory has moved pretty quickly. “We have a few left, but I think furniture’s going to be something that turns over quickly and that’s what’s going to help us expand-we need more room for it,” Reney said. Expansion is in the plan for Karma’s Closet, which hopes to take over the additional 3,000 square feet next to its current 1,400 square foot shop in the Sprint PCS, McBride Plaza, 3153 Berlin Tpk. Expansion will allow Karma’s Closet more opportunity to give back to Newington. “My kids want to do a kids craft corner--my kids’ friends, there’s like 10 of them, make these bracelets and little magnets….Every month they want to donate [sales] to a different charity,” Chomko said.
