Experts Present Findings at Toll Brothers Site by Mark DiPaola Environmental experts from Toll Brothers, and the independent team brought in by Newington, presented conflicting findings regarding the sedimentary composition at the center wetland on the proposed Cedar Mountain development space at a Conservation Commission public hearing last Tuesday, Dec. 4. The inconsistency between the two testimonies--the first one, from Ron Abrams of the Toll Brothers-hired Dru Associates, and the second by George Logan of REMA Ecological Services LLC--is regarding the presence of a clay layer that the applicants claim will prevent water from leaking out of the wetland. “This is a confining layer keeping the water above separated from anything below; below being sand and gravel,” Abrams told the Commission. Dru Associates and REMA agreed that there is a clay layer surrounding the outside of the center wetland, but Logan said that he has yet to find strong evidence of the same composition moving inward. “If the clay layer’s not there--I’m speculating that it is, but I don’t know--the interface of ground water and the sur-

rounding area is a different animal,” he said. Because the wetland’s driest and wettest periods were consistent with the amount of rainfall in a given year, the area is solely dependent on rain and snow melt-related precipitation, Abrams said. Dru Associates presented a study highlighting the past 11 years, four of which saw less than 40 inches of rain in the area, the wetlands driest years. In the four years that saw more than 50 inches of rain, water levels were at their highest, he said. “The basin was pretty much as full as it gets in one of the wet years,” Abrams said. Dru Associates and REMA will be going back out to take another look, but if they do not find the clay layer reported by the applicant’s team of experts, claims regarding the wetlands source of water will likely be challenged, Logan said. The inconsistencies continue to erode the patience of the Newington and Wethersfield residents that have attended the hearings. “Please don’t be swayed by biased research,” said Newington resident Gail Budrejko during the public comment segment. “This development might bring short-term economic benefits, but it will put the ecosystem in jeopardy.”

The middle of the wetland is either a “bowl,” in that the suspected clay layer dips and may have questionable thickness, or a “hole,” meaning that it is not there, Logan said. “If there’s a hole in the middle or there’s sand, there’s more of the sand influence, so there’s more ground water influence,” he said. This is not the first time reports by Dru Associates and REMA have conflicted. At the last meeting, REMA revealed the presence of an endangered tree species, the swamp cottonwood. The presence of the swamp cottonwood had already been reported to the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), which will review the situation and collaborate with the town and applicant in the event the proposal advances further, Logan said. “In this case they’re going to look at potential indirect impacts, like change of hydrology, change of chemistry of the wetland,” he said. The greatest danger to the swamp cottonwood is the addition of more trees because it thrives on an absence of shade, according to REMA. Allowing the wetland to become dryer may accommodate more trees, putting the endangered species at risk.

New Business: Bliss Nails & Spa by Katelyn Kelleher Since opening in August, Bliss Nails & Spa’s growing clientele base has been loyal--so loyal that they haven’t lost any. “Every customer who came here kept coming back,” said owner Leo Yoon. “Since we opened we have grown very fast; more than I expected.” The all-natural, all-green product salon at 2195 Berlin Tpk. is the first in Newington to implement a new ventilation system, which, as of 2012, is required for new salons, Yoon said. “It’s the same ventilation system as a car paint shop. You get no fumes.” With the eco-friendly environment, Bliss Nails & Spa offers a variety of services, including three different types of manicures, four different types of pedicures, waxing and massage. “People get a free back massage while they’re getting service,” Yoon said. “Then after they try the back massage while they’re getting service, they decide to get 10 or 20 minutes of extra time.” A large fountain in the center of the salon adds to the relaxing atmosphere. Bliss Nails & Spa is open weekdays, 9 a.m.- 7 p.m.; Saturdays, 9 a.m.- 6 p.m.; and Sundays, 9 a.m.- 5 p.m. Walk-ins are welcome, but Yoon recommends making an appointment, if possible. The spacious salon also has a private room available for groups, popular for bridal parties, birthdays and teenagers. Through the holidays, the salon is offering 20 percent off all gift certificates. Bliss Nails & Spa, can be reached at 860-665-1018.

There is plenty of space at Bliss Nails & Spa to accomodate many customers and even parties.

This large fountain provides a relaxing sound and is quite a sight. Leo and Tony Yoon in front of the salon’s Christmas tree. Customers have a variety of manicure and pedicure options.

Thousands Celebrate the Holidays on Main Wethersfield kicked off the holiday season in style, with the lighting of a towering Christmas tree and a winter farmers market, amongst other attractions that made up the town’s third annual Holidays on Main. The event, which drew 4,000 attendees last year, once again flooded the streets with residents eager to snap photos of the newly-lit tree and line up for one of several horsedrawn-wagon rides shuttling passengers around the area.

Alex Hoffman was one of those who braved the cold to wait for a taste of Old Wethersfield’s historic feel. “I don’t know where it goes,” Hoffman said. “I guess I’ll find out.” Although Hoffman lives nearby, she and her family were attending the event for the first time. “It was really crowded, so I like seeing people in town I don’t normally see,” she said. “And this tree’s really nice.” Donna Carpenter, a 12year Wethersfield resident, was also checking it out for the first time.

Along with street vendors, wagon rides, a wood carver and a farmers market, this fire juggler entertained the crowds.

“My husband doesn’t like the cold, so I never came, but I came here by myself,” Carpenter said. And it was worth it, she said. “Nobody should miss this,” Carpenter said. “Wethersfield has a wonderful historic district. I think people really appreciate it.” It was a first for a lot of people, including those who came in with the Wethersfield winter farmers market. “This is the first year we’ve ever been a part of it, and it’s incredible,” said Stephanie Jarm, who runs the winter farmers market. “I’ve never seen it this busy.” For the farmers selling varieties of jams, hummus, honey, maple sugar and horse radish, among other The lighting of this giant Christmas Tree marked the start of the season at the annual Holidays on Main last Thursday items, the adjustment was in Old Wethersfield. of snacks, including marked by crowds and cold, from Lebanon. “A lot of people from popcorn, hot pretzels, but the former was well Legal Notice town didn’t even know and candy canes. worth the latter, Jarm said. “Alter Ego” Scarecrow Teaches History Lessons by Mark DiPaola Look up the word “miscellaneous” in the dictionary. Seriously, go ahead and Google it, if you don’t know what it means already. The definition that comes up should say something along the lines of a “collection or group” that is “of various types from different sources”. Wethersfield resident Elaine Ogren Speranga, with the slew of talents and hobbies that make up who she is, fits this term--she’s an artist, a poet, a historian, and a

scarecrow, in spirit, anyway. The scarecrow is “Miscelaineos,” Spernaga’s self-described alter ego she constructed in 2003. Say that name again: Miscelaineos. Listen to how the middle part sounds--Elaine. That wasn’t an accident, and it has worked to blur the distinction between creation and creator. “People refer to me as her,” Speranga said during a phone interview. “I was in the Capitol today and people would say, ‘Hi Miscelaineos.’ Miscelaineos is an extension of me. We’re one in the same. She’s in the straw form. I’m in the skin form.” Somebody call Batman because Scarecrow is in the house. But no, seriously, Speranga/ Miscelaineos is no comic book super villain. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. Through a collection of 70 paintings Speranga has been building since 2006, Miscelaineos has become somewhat of a hero--or at the very least, a really cool sidekick-standing alongside Mark Twain, Harriet Tubman and Betsy Ross, among others. “I have always

been an artist,” Speranga said. “I always wanted to do paintings, and one day I just said ‘I’m gonna do one of Miscelaineos’.” It’s Monday night in Wethersfield’s Council chambers. Speranga waits for the second to last resident to have their say during the public comment segment, and then goes to the podium to provide everyone with a break from the discussions about the town’s depleted pension fund and state spending, among other items. She has with her four paintings, the first one being an image of Miscelaineos standing between a snowman and Santa Claus. Santa is uncharacteristically slimmer, and he’s wearing a pin that says ‘I lost 20 pounds.’ “This Santa is very health conscious,” she says to the amused councilors. “I think Mrs. Obama would be very happy with that.” Don’t forget President Obama and the Monsanto lobbyists in the FDA. The contents of Speranga’s paintings might, at a glance, seem, as the name of her character implies, miscellaneous, but nothing is placed into the pictures at random, she said. Most of the works have an obvious historical theme. Harriet Tubman, for example, is holding an apple, which was added to depict that the abolitionist figure would be forced to pick the fruit, but punished for eating it. Case in point, every image is

designed to educate the viewer. “People of all ages can learn,” Speranga said. “Everything’s deliberately in the picture for a reason.” Through Speranga’s paintings, Miscelaineos has traveled through time, but in real life, the scarecrow has covered some distance through space. Speranga has brought it to Capitol Hill in Hartford, where she is as a tour guide, as well as to the Bushnell Theatre where she works, hence the fame outside of Wethersfield. Where to next for her and her alter ego? Speranga is thinking even bigger. She wants to write a book based on Miscellaneous, perhaps a play or movie, even. She’s written poetry about her other half and she’s even compos-

State Plans Disabled Prisoner, Mental Patient Nursing Home by Katelyn Kelleher State plans for a 95-bed specialized nursing home for disabled prisoners and mental patients have put residents and town officials on edge--particularly those whose homes abut the property. The state hopes to open the 60 West St. facility, the former Haven Health Care Center, in February. The project is a joint venture between the state Department of Corrections and the state Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services. James Siemianowksi, spokesman for DMHAS said individuals referred to the facility would have very significant and chronic medical conditions. “They may be individuals with dementia, someone with Parkinson’s, Huntington’s, dealing with the after-effects of a stroke, so they’re individuals that really are severely compromised from a medical standpoint and they have to need 24-hour nursing care,” he said. “Individuals could be coming in from in-patient care, from an agency or they could be individuals who are eligible for parole or near the end of their sentence.” Siemianowksi explained currently the state is not able to get Medicaid reimbursement for these individuals but, once they are placed in a nursing home, the state anticipates receiving a little over $5.5 million annually from the federal government.

Town officials, who just learned of the project last Thursday, Dec. 6, are “exploring all legal remedies, looking to do whatever we can to protect the interest of the town,” said Town Manager Barbara Gilbert. “It came as an absolute surprise when I got a phone call from The Hartford Courant,” she said. “I immediately called state Representative [Tony] Guerrera. “It’s beyond comprehension the state would do this to a community without consulting the community,” she said. Though Gilbert could not give further information as to what legal action the town could take, she said it has been turned over to the town attorney. The CT Mirror published in February that the state departments of correction, mental health and addiction services and social services issued a request for proposals for nursing homes for “clients under state care who are difficult to place.” In November, the facility on West Street was sold to Secure Realty LLC. “The building was sold to a company. Little did we know that the company had a blessing from the state,” Gilbert said. Gilbert estimated there are approximately 500 residences within a 500-foot radius of the facility. Siemianowksi said there would be 24-hour security personnel on site at the facility and restricted units. “The reality is that that facility has already functioned as a nursing home and when it did, it had what we call se-

cure units,” he said, explaining that might consist of a key pad entrance and exit. Many residents who live close to the facility, however, do not feel so secure, starting a Facebook group called, “No Prisoners In Our Backyards RH.” Resident Josh Egan purchased a his home two years ago, abutting the facility property, hoping to start a family in Rocky Hill. “I’m worried about having prisoners in our backyard. I’m worried about my neighbors. I’m worried about the fact that we would never be able to sell our house when this goes through,” he said. “I love where we live and I was fine having the elderly facility back there, but this is taking it to a whole new level…I don’t think anyone else would like this that close to their house.” Egan said he is willing to try anything possible to stop the facility from moving in. “I think my neighbors and the town of Rocky Hill are behind me,” he said. The state will hold a public information session, facilitated by the town, Thursday, Dec. 20, at 7 p.m. in the Rocky Hill High School auditorium, at which representatives from DMHAS will explain the project and answer questions. Gilbert said the town is also planning to send letters to residents within 500 feet of the facility, which will include a brochure the state Department of Corrections has promised, and all residents will receive a call notifying them of the Dec. 20 meeting.

Cromwell Students and Youth Services Spread Holiday Cheer by Katelyn Kelleher The Cromwell High School Student Council teamed up with Cromwell Youth Services once again to gift-give to the less fortunate through the “Santa’s Workshop” Program. The 30 “elves” on the students council raised $1,200 to purchase gifts for children up to age 12 whose families might be experiencing financial difficulties. The students gathered at Town Hall Dec. 3 to wrap all the gifts and Santa handed them out Monday at Cromwell High School. Each child received a gift. Students served pizza and desserts to guests while children ran around the tree, playing with balloon sculptures by Noodles the Clown.

Athlete’s foot is often spread in areas where people go barefoot, like public showers or swimming pools. There may be mild scaling and itching, or painful inflammation and blisters. Commonly, it starts between the toes or in the arch. The condition may spread to the bottom or sides of the foot. A mild condition will respond to over-the-counter medications. Stronger medications may be prescribed if condition persists. Fungus may also affect the toenails. This results in thickened, discolored and sensitive nails which may become infected. There have been advances in both topical and oral anti-fungal medications resulting in better success with treatment. In some cases, the toenail may be permanently removed. If you suffer from fungal problems, contact the Connecticut Foot Care Center nearest you for an appointment. One of our foot specialists can suggest the most appropriate treatment for your individual fungal problem. www.ctfootcare.com • Follow us on Facebook & Twitter! 506 Cromwell Ave. ROCKY HILL

Did You Know? There are two types of cholesterol, one that can make the arteries less flexible and therefore make a person more susceptible to heart attack or stroke; and the other that actually protects against heart attack. Cholesterol cannot dissolve in the blood, which means it has to be transported to and from the cells by carriers known as lipoproteins. Low-density lipoproteins, or LDL, are considered “bad” cholesterol. When too much bad cholesterol is circulating in the blood, LDL can slowly build up on the inner walls of the arteries, possibly even teaming with other substances to form plaque, a thick, hard deposit that narrows the arteries and makes them less flexible. High-density lipoprotein, or HDL, is what’s considered “good” cholesterol. That’s because medical experts feel HDL carries cholesterol away from the arteries and back to the liver, where cholesterol is then passed from the body. In addition, some experts also feel HDL removes excess cholesterol from arterialplaque, slowing its buildup as a result. And though cholesterol is commonly, and falsely, considered a dirty word, low levels of HDL actually increase a person’s risk of heart disease. A simple blood test can help men and women learn their HDL and LDL levels, and if they need to make any changes to get on the right track.

Tony Marzano Plumbing & Heating

The newly-formed Connecticut Academy of Irish Music, established by fiddler Jeanne Freeman, seeks to encourage young people and adults to explore the joys of learning and playing traditional Irish and Celtic music. Group lessons will be offered on a variety of instruments to children and adults for a 12week session beginning in late January 2013. There will also be opportunities for students to play in mixed-instrument groups, including a youth ceili band and a mixed- instrument session led by an instructor. The Academy is pleased to announce that seven-time All-Ireland Champion and recording artist John Whelan will serve as the Artist-in-Residence, and will work with the youth ceili band with a goal of competing in regional and All-Ireland competitions. Box Tops for Education

The PTO Box Tops for Education coordinators for Myrtle H. Stevens and West Hill Elementary schools are collaborating together to try and improve community involvement with earning free money for our schools. We do a great job with collecting within the schools and we are now hoping to expand our collections by informing town residents about this great program. In addition we would like them to know that we have recently placed some collection boxes at some prime locations here in town (at the senior center; at the Library on the information wall; at West Side market near the front windows by the registers). We also continue to have a collection box at the Parks & Rec counter. Passing Box Top coupons onto a neighborhood child works as well.

Business Spotlight Karma’s Closet Shop Locally and Eco-Friendly by Katelyn Kelleher “What goes around comes around” is the company motto of newlyopened Karma’s Closet in Newington, and for owners Deanna Reney and Joely Chomko, that means giving back to their hometown. At the grand opening of Newington’s only consignment shop this Saturday, Dec. 15, all items at Karma’s Closet will be 10 percent off. An additional 10 percent of the sale price will be donated to the Newington Food Bank. “Because we’re from Newington, we’re trying to do local stuff for Newington,” Chomko said. “We wanted to be able to give

back locally.” Reney, a Newington native, added being able to start a business in the town she grew up in “is really, really cool.” In the three weeks the shop has been open, locals have shown their appreciation. Consignment shoppers who previously had to travel out of town were excited to be able to shop at Karma’s Closet, Reney said, and they’re already seeing the ripple effect from word of mouth. “The first people that saw us in [The Rare Reminder] came in and know us and then people now come in and say, ‘Well my friend sent me here,’” she said.

Joely Chomko and Deanna Reney, Karma’s Closet owners.

Karma’s Closet accepts and sells items for every age group and price range, for men and women, plus sizes and for the home. The only items Karma’s Closet does not accept, until space allows, are children’s and maternity clothing. A 50/50 split is the rate for all items. “We try to carry less expensive things, like Forever 21 and even great things come from Target and Wal Mart too, to we have a Burberry suit, we have a Hugo Boss suit, we have Coach purses that have to be locked up and china that has to be in showcases and Tiffany and Lia Sophia,” Reney said. “We have a little bit of everything.” “We even have real furs,” Chomko added. Unlike many consignment shops, Karma’s Closet doesn’t limit itself to any particular brands or labels, so you may find something you can’t get anywhere else around here. Sellers have brought in boots from Italy, artwork from Bermuda, pashminas from France and ceramics from Poland, for example. If customers are looking for a particular item, they can post on the store’s Facebook page, www.facebook.com/karmasclosetct,

and the store will start a wish list. They’ve already gotten several requests for Michael Kors handbags. Right now furniture is on the most wanted list for Reney and Chomko, as their inventory has moved pretty quickly. “We have a few left, but I think furniture’s going to be something that turns over quickly and that’s what’s going to help us expand-we need more room for it,” Reney said. Sellers can email or Facebook Karma’s Closet a picture of their furniture or, if it’s local, Reney or Chomko can go look at it. Expansion is in the plan for Karma’s Closet, which hopes to take over the additional 3,000 square feet next to its current 1,400 square foot shop in the Sprint PCS, McBride Plaza, 3153 Berlin Tpk. Expansion will allow Karma’s Closet more opportunity to give back to Newington. “My kids want to do a kids craft corner--my kids’ friends, there’s like 10 of them, make these bracelets and little magnets….Every month they want to donate [sales] to a different charity,” Chomko said. Karma’s Closet is open Monday-Wednesday, 10 a.m.- 6 p.m.; ThursdayFriday, 10 a.m.- 7 p.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m.- 5 p.m.; and Sunday 12 p.m.- 5 p.m. and can be reached at 860-4366055 or karmasclosetct@ yahoo.com.

Furniture and fine china are among the homegoods to be found at Karma’s Closet.

Bags and clothes galore for every price range.

LANGUAGE is the cornerstone of reading. Talk to your baby– during bathtime, at play, when changing him or her, at feeding times. Sing to your baby and recite nursery rhymes. Before the age of one, babies like to handle books more than being read to. Let them choose cardboard or cloth books. Take your baby to the park, the zoo, the library, the store. Babies learn from everything they see.

Selling a home and home improvement go hand in hand. Homeowners who have sold a home in the past are well aware that before the “For Sale” sign gets staked out in the front yard, several steps need to be taken to make a home more attractive to prospective buyers. Improving the exterior of home before sale is what’s known as increasing its curb appeal. First-time home sellers would be surprised what a few seemingly minor changes on the outside can do to make a home more attractive to buyers. In addition, it never hurts to pull a few tricks on the inside as well. • Trim trees, bushes and shrubs: Few things are more unsightly outside a home than vegetation that’s not well taken care of. Unkempt vegetation gives the impression that owners weren’t fond of upkeep and might have let other things slide as well. Make sure all trees, bushes and shrubs are well-trimmed before any prospective buyers come over to look at the house. • Clean the patio: An attractive area for many home buyers is the patio. Most will want an area outside to relax and have a barbecue. Clean your patio thoroughly and replace any old furniture to highlight how valuable a nice outdoor space this can be. • Create an inviting aroma: Once homeowners enter a home, there are a number of tricks sellers can use to make the home more attractive. It’s not uncommon for real estate agents to suggest baking a loaf of bread or other food that smells great shortly before the house is shown. Close the windows and oven fan when doing so to maximize the resulting aroma and allow it to spread throughout the house. For areas of the house where the baking smells can’t reach, try other tricks but avoid using potpourri. A lot of people are allergic to potpourri and may not be able to continue their tour of the house if the smell is too prevalent. • Use your fireplace to your advantage: If your home has a fireplace and you’re selling it in colder months, by all means light the fireplace before showing the house. Lots of people dream of having a home with a functioning fireplace so make it a focal point whenever possible. • Create illusions: You don’t need to be David Copperfield or Harry Houdini to create illusions that make your home appear more spacious than it really is. Instead, remove any excess furniture that isn’t absolutely necessary for the times when you’re not showing the house. Chances are, rooms in your home appear cluttered to people who don’t live there, and clutter creates the illusion that a place is small. Do the opposite by removing excess furniture and you might even like the resulting extra space as well.

Protecting Hardwood Floors Roughly half of all homes have hardwood flooring, and industry professionals suspect more and more homeowners are looking to hardwood flooring for their homes. When surveyed, 90 percent of real estate agents have said that hardwood flooring is a desirable feature in a home. Those agents also say property with hardwood flooring sells faster than one with carpeting or another flooring option. With hardwood flooring so prevalent in homes, protecting those beautiful wood floors is a major priority for homeowners. Caring for hardwood floors only takes some common sense precautions and minimal maintenance. Today’s hardwood floors are often produced with durable sealants that protect the wood underneath or are comprised of composite or reclaimed wood products. But that doesn’t mean precautions should be taken to further protect against potential damage to the flooring.

Need a threshold?

Look to the Rare Reminder Real Estate section every week!

* Place area rugs or mats at the doorways entering the home. This way sand, dirt and other debris can be wiped off at the entryway and not carried onto the wood flooring where it can cause abrasions over time. * Pay careful attention to which types of shoes are worn on the floors. High heels or cleats can damage the wood. Removing shoes prior to walking on the floor is a safer bet. * Choose the right type of cleaner for the floor. Do not assume just because a particular cleaner is adequate for wood cabinetry or furniture that it is also fine for wood flooring. Check the label. * Use area rugs and carpet runners on areas of the floor that tend to be high-traffic areas. This will prevent these areas from being worn down unevenly from other areas of the floor. * Do not allow water or other liquids to stand on the floor for a long duration. This can cause degradation of the wood and staining. * Use felt or plastic protectors on the “feet” of dining room chairs or other furniture to prevent against scuffing or scratches. Wood flooring can be an expensive addition to any home, but one that is sought after for its aesthetic appeal. To ensure a floor remains in good condition over the long haul, take action to protect hardwood floors as soon as possible.

Adopt-A-Senior-Cat Month November is Adopt-A-Senior-Cat Month. Senior cats are grateful and make the best cuddle buddies. They have experience being in a home so they come with household etiquette and if not; their longer attention spans make them quick learners. Cats now live into their 20s with proper care so it’s important that pet parents have a plan for the cat or any pet so their pets do not end up at shelters. A written agreement or a trust will ensure that your pet will be cared for in the event of a disability or death. Manhattan, Duffy and Sierra are very eager to be in a home again. Please call 860-828-5287. View all of the adoptable pets at www.fobac.org. ADOPT COOKIE. Cookie is spunky girl with a big imagination and a sense of humor. She is as cute as a button; a fluffy tuxedo. She is independent yet affectionate but mostly entertaining. View her on ww.fobac.org. Please call 860-828-5287.

Distracted Driving a Big Danger Today’s drivers face more distractions than ever before. Technological gadgets from smart phones to MP3 players give drivers new reasons to look away from the road. Distracted driving is any activity a person engages in that can distract him or her from the primary task of driving. There are three main types of distraction: 1. Visual:Taking eyes off the road. 2. Cognitive: Not thinking about what you’re doing. 3. Manual: Taking hands off the wheel. Distracted driving may include talking on a cell phone, eating food in the car, thumbing through the maps on a GPS device, or even changing the radio station. But the type of distracted driving that has become an epidemic, particularly among younger drivers, is texting while driving. When driving, the safest bet is to refrain from any activity that takes one’s eyes, hands or mind away from the road. If answering a cell phone or working with another device is necessary, drivers should pull over to the side of the road and take care of what they need to do.

Preparation, Performance Key to Job Interviews - Whether you’re a recent college grad or a grizzled veteran of big business, interviewing for a job can be a nerve-wracking experience. While you may not be able to eliminate stress completely, there are ways to boost your confidence about the interview process. And the more confident you are entering an interview, the less likely you are to be a bundle of nerves before and during the interview. The following tips should help boost your confidence for your next interview and might help you land that dream job.

HOMEMAKERS / COMPANIONS: Needed to help elderly persons in their homes. Local area. Must have car. Tender Living Care, Inc., 860-633-9335. EOE Reg. #HCA.0000131.

Preparation Much of the stress that comes with a job interview is the fear of the unknown. That’s why recent college grads are typically more stressed out for a job interview than professionals who have been there, done that in the past. Whereas the veteran pro knows what to expect, the recent grad has no idea. However, proper preparation can help you know what to expect. * Research the company. Extend your knowledge beyond just the job for which you’re interviewing. The more you know about the company, the more informed your answers will seem to the interviewer and the more you can tailor those answers to the company’s goals. * Ask yourself what questions you would ask. After an interview is scheduled, think of the questions you’re likely to be asked, and then think of thoughtful answers to those questions. While it’s good to think of answers ahead of time, make sure your answers focus on ideas instead of actual answers, as you won’t want your responses to seem rehearsed. * Write down what you bring to the table. Regardless of the position you’re almost certain to be asked how your past experience applies to it. Be prepared to confidently explain why you are the right fit for the job. * Bring your own set of questions. You should be prepared to do some interviewing yourself. Have an extensive list of questions available, and if they are answered during the course of the interview, simply check them off your list. If you don’t have a list of thoughtful questions, it will give the impression you’re indifferent about the position.

Performance While there’s no way of knowing the success rate of the most qualified candidate, it’s certainly not a 100 percent guarantee he or she will get the job. That’s because a job interview isn’t just about your resume, but about you as well. Even the most prepared person might not land the job if that preparation doesn’t translate to how well he performs in the interview. Be sure to do the following at your next interview: * Arrive at least 10 minutes early. * Make eye contact with the hiring manager when both of you are speaking. * Don’t sit until you’re offered a chair. * Project energy and don’t slouch. * Ask for an extensive job description early on in the interview. * Answer with more than just a “yes” or “no.” * Leave salary, benefit and vacation inquiries for the follow-up interview, not the initial interview.

Wethersfield Basketball Continues its Winning Streak by Mark DiPaola The Wethersfield High School basketball team must have been trying to prove that the holding Hall High School to three third quarter points last week wasn’t a fluke, because the Eagles rode rock solid defense to another preseason victory, this time over Suffield High School by a 54-31 score line on Friday afternoon at home. The Eagles’ defense closed the gate in the third quarter again, this time holding the Wildcats to five points for the period. Ryan Peterson’s seven rebounds, one steal, and one block performance allowed Wethersfield to dominate the paint on both sides of the court, eliminating second chances in the defensive zone and allowing the Eagles to sustain pressure on the basket on the offensive side. The junior also had five points and one assist in a third quarter in which the team recorded three blocked shots total. Sharp passing and tenacious rebounding helped an Eagles team that tends to shy away from perimeter shots to build a blowout 44-18 lead that they would take into the fourth quarter. It started when Peterson stole an errant Wildcat pass and took it the length of the court for a layup. He went to the line to make it a three-point play, putting the Eagles up 28-13. On the next Wethersfield possession, it was Peterson again, hitting a jumper to make it 30-13. Suffocating defensive play not only helped to hamstring the Wildcat offense, but it breathed life into the Eagles offense, which capitalized on turnovers and quick counterattack transition play. Wethersfield senior Ivan Mangual kept the momentum going with a steal up top. Peterson tipped the deflected ball back to him, and he was able to take it to the other end for a layup. The Wethersfield defense did not allow a third quarter bucket until the 2:22 mark of the period.

Wethersfield held off Suffield for another scrimmage victory Friday at home.

Newington Girls Off to a 3-0 Season Start by Katelyn Kelleher The Newington High School Lady Indians basketball team added another win to their so far undefeated season at home Monday night with a 59-27 win against Maloney High School. The Indians held onto their sizable lead heading into the third quarter, with two points from Stephanie Kowalski on an assist from Stasha Greenalch, who had 19 points and 11 rebounds for the game, followed by a layup from Greenalch and then Ashleigh Beauford. Maloney’s May Rios, who had 15 points for the game, made up a few points in the fourth quarter, with a three-pointer followed by a layup, but Maloney couldn’t make up for its over 30-point deficit. Maloney’s season dropped to 0-3. The Indians’ Alex Marques contributed seven points, Kayla Guest and Juliana Houldcroft each put in six, and Jalen Middlebrooks added five for the team’s top scorers. Newington’s victory against Maloney came on the coattails of two wins last week, 4539 against Rocky Hill High School last Tuesday, Dec. 5, and 44-37 against Conard High School last Thursday, Dec. 7. Newington will head to RHAM High School (2-0) Thursday for a 7 p.m. game.

The Newington Indians added another win Monday against Maloney.

The Indians try to grab a missed shot from Maloney.

Newington’s Alexandra Zapatka steals the ball from Maloney.
