Letter from the Executive Director Reflecting back on a year of being the Executive Director, I am so proud of the accomplishments of the Monterey Symphony. I feel equally proud to live in a community that values the arts so deeply. This past year, we saw a large increase in both foundation and individual giving. I am happy to report that we finished the year with a balanced budget! The Symphony received grants in support of our leadership transition, general operations, and Music for the Schools program. A complete list can be found on page 16 of this report. Our Legacy Society grew this year and we celebrated its members at a private candlelight recital with soloist Josu de Solaun in February. Other highlights of the year included a lovely recital at the home of George and Patricia Yellich with our Music Director and Concertmaster, as well as a wildly fun Derby Day at the InterContinental Hotel. I am ever grateful to the staff and board of the Monterey Symphony for their hard work and passion for the Symphony. This was a year of financial healing for the organization. As we examine decisions in the future, they need to follow the metric: are they mission driven and are they sustainable? The continued health of the Symphony depends on these decisions. This year, we filled every youth concert to capacity. We had wait lists and in some cases, needed to offer schools openings in the 2018-19 season. Next season we will add two youth concerts in Salinas, creating 3,000 more seats. Our Saturday evening events were successful and focused, we will continue our Women’s Night Out and the Member Appreciation night in partnership with KAZU, 90.3 FM. We will also explore other meaningful ways to align with community partners. As both Lee and Max will mention, it was an impressive artistic year for the Symphony. Our musicians, who come to Monterey from every corner of California, filled Sunset Center with glorious music. Their commitment to excellence is unparalleled. The future is bright for the Monterey Symphony!

Letter from the Music Director It has always been my belief that the richest and most extensive classical music repertoire is for the orchestra and piano, so when the two are combined, the musicians and the public are doubly fulfilled and delighted. This Concert Grand season offered seven piano concerti played by six consummate pianists, each concerto with its own ingenuity, and each soloist with his own personality. Orion Weiss dazzled us with Tchaikovsky. David Jae-Weon Huh regaled us with a powerful and expressive Prokofiev 3rd. Josu de Solaun revealed the marvelous secrets of Saint-Saëns’ 5th, unknown to most. Michael Davidman presented us with a youthful and innovative approach to Mozart’s 21st in collaboration with Conner Gray Covington, a blossoming young conductor and colleague from the Curtis Institute of Music. We were honored to host Juan Pérez Floristán‘s debut in the US with Brahms’ colossal 2nd concerto, and Philippe Bianconi amazed and delighted us with Falla’s Nights in the Gardens of Spain and an always impressive Liszt. Masterworks of the greatest composers completed the programs, and the Monterey Symphony displayed many brilliant moments. From my point of view, the orchestra’s most commendable accomplishment was a profoundly expressive and technically superb performance of Schumann’s Symphony No. 2. I also was impressed with the musicians’ careful and sensitive approach to Prokofiev’s Classical Symphony. The annual Side-by-Side experience for the YMMC Honors Orchestra musicians is always a highlight. Their enthusiasm and commitment were evident as they navigated the challenging “Pastoral” Symphony. As a huge contribution to this successful season, I am particularly pleased that so many students were able to see and hear our orchestra at its best, and that they were exposed to the greatest masterworks, a gift they always will possess and hopefully will continue to receive for many years to come. Thank you to the staff of the Monterey Symphony, and most especially to Deanna Ross, for all their efforts to make this such a successful program. With much appreciation for your continuing support of our great Symphony,
Max Bragado-Darman
