This festival is part of the many contributions that Montclair Film makes to our state’s arts community, from supporting the dreams of young artists to expanding arts education for New Jersey students. Over the past decade, your efforts have uplifted countless people around our state, and as you celebrate another year’s worth of achievements, please accept my heartfelt appreciation for all that you have done and continue to do. Welcome
Dear Movie Fans, I want to welcome everyone to the 10th Annual Montclair Film Festival! This extraordinary event allows attendees to enjoy stories from a wide variety of producers, directors, and actors in their own community. This 10-day festival gives these filmmakers a chance to showcase their work to a diverse audience of fans and critics. In addition, it provides a stage to highlight the incredible creative talent we have in New Jersey. I know Montclair Film Executive Director Tom Hall and his amazing staff have created some truly unique experiences in a safe environment for viewers this year. But the festival is just one part of Montclair Film’s commitment to increase and expand the community’s love of cinema. I would encourage everyone to sign up for one of the workshops, such as screenwriting, that Montclair Film + Education conducts every year. Also, it has a competition for emerging film directors as well as a children’s art project. If you cannot make the festival, feel free to contact them to rent out the Investors Bank Film and Media Center and have a private screening of your favorite film for friends and business associates. So, stay safe and enjoy the festival. Sincerely,
Donald M. Payne, Jr. Member of Congress
Dear Friends, It is my pleasure to welcome all of you to the 2021 Montclair Film Festival! This annual Festival provides a platform for talented filmmakers from around the world to share their work with the local community and beyond. I want to extend my gratitude to the Montclair Film Festival’s board, staff, and members for their hard work putting together another entertaining program and ensuring we can safely enjoy it. I am especially excited to recognize this tenth anniversary year of the Montclair Film Festival. Even through the challenges presented by the pandemic, the festival found creative ways to continue to bring this cultural staple to our community. For ten years, the Montclair Film Festival has supported a diverse array of artists, engaging its audience with educational and entertaining programs. I look forward to this year’s event and eagerly anticipate what the future holds. I hope everyone enjoys this year’s Montclair Film Festival and I encourage you to appreciate all that Montclair has to offer as you visit our town! Stay safe and be well. Sincerely,
Mikie Sherrill Member of Congress 17
Welcome
Dear Friends: Welcome to the 10th Annual Montclair Film Festival! This dynamic event is a wonderful opportunity to view high-quality films from veteran, emerging, independent, and cutting-edge artists. Whether you are a film enthusiast or come to watch just one movie, the broad and extraordinary lineup offers something for everyone. But Montclair Film has evolved into more than just a festival to watch movies. Montclair Film has grown by leaps and bounds, organized a year-long schedule of events, programs, and educational workshops, making it a dynamic resource and year-round asset for the community. We are even more excited about their announcement earlier this year to take over the operation of The Clairidge, which further cements the organization’s role in and commitment to Montclair. We thank the committee for highlighting the extraordinary artistic talents of the filmmakers and actors, the importance of film as an art form, and for adding a generator of economic development to our vibrant community. Essex County knows that the arts are a cultural and economic driver, and strongly supports efforts like the Montclair Film Festival. Together we will continue Putting Essex County First. Sincerely,
Joseph N. DiVincenzo, Jr. Essex County Executive
Welcome to the 2021 Montclair Film Festival! We have been through so much and still find ourselves navigating a global pandemic. But through it all, we have remained the community we all love because of the resiliency of our residents, our businesses, and our community partners. It is with a thankful return to a new normal that we excitedly welcome the start of the 10th Annual Montclair Film Festival! WIth the success of each year’s festival, dating back to 2012, every year offers unique opportunities and the promise of an amazing experience. The Montclair Film Festival, the signature event of Montclair Film, is part of the fabric that makes Montclair special, and we know you are as excited as we are to take part in this year’s October festival. I congratulate and thank all those who have worked so hard to bring the 10th Annual Festival to us again this year. Sincerely,
Sean M. Spiller Mayor, Township of Montclair

Welcome Dear Friends, On behalf of the Board of Trustees, staff, and volunteers of Montclair Film, it is our pleasure to welcome you to the 10th Annual Montclair Film Festival. Looking back over the past decade, we could not be more proud of the incredible growth of the festival, which has blossomed from an idea shared among friends and supporters around a kitchen table over eleven years ago into one of the region’s leading film non-profits, providing year-round film and education programs to thousands of patrons and students every year. This past year, our community has faced unprecedented challenges, from the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, which required us to reimagine the 2020 Montclair Film Festival as a virtual and drive-in event, to the recent flooding from Tropical Storm Ida that severely damaged our education center and headquarters at 505 Bloomfield Avenue. We have been overwhelmed by the positive messages of support from so many of you, and they have given us the resolve to work harder than ever before to deliver world-class programs that continue to bring our community together. We know that the COVID-19 pandemic has not ended, and so we continue to prioritize the health and safety of our community first. We are taking the following measures to ensure that patrons can enjoy the festival in the safest conditions possible: we’re requiring proof of vaccination and masking for all staff, volunteers, guests and patrons at all of our indoor events; and we’re taking longer breaks between films, allowing us to create social distancing, fewer lines and time for the thorough cleaning of our theaters. We are grateful to all of our patrons for their patience and understanding, and for their shared commitment to the physical and mental health of everyone attending. As we embark on our second decade, we are thrilled to be re-launching the newly renovated cinemas at The Clairidge, which has been a home for our festival and programs for the past decade. We look forward to welcoming you to The Clairidge year-round, with the high-quality independent, international, and non-fiction films that you have come to expect from the region’s leading arthouse cinema. As Montclair Film continues to grow, the support of our patrons and community is more important than ever before. We hope you will join us as we celebrate ten years of bringing you the best in film, conversation, storytelling, and education. It has been an incredible decade, and we look forward to building the future together. See you at the movies!

Education Dear Friends, Amidst the uncertainty and unique challenges of the past year, Montclair Film + Education remains committed to helping students of all ages find their voices and tell their stories. Over the past year, our dedicated instructors taught virtual courses in Filmmaking, Screenwriting, Voice Acting, Acting for Film and TV, Editing, Podcasting, and more! Documentary and Horror fans, as well as seniors from The Montclair Institute for Lifelong Learning (MILL), screened films and came together on Zoom for lively conversations with filmmakers and community. And our 505 Films + Friends club continues to provide a welcoming and inclusive space for teens and young adults, with and without disabilities, to engage intellectually and socially through the viewing and discussion of films. As schools continued to teach remotely, Montclair Film + Education extended their partnership with North Star Academy in Newark, providing virtual hands-on workshops for their students. We also partnered with Talking Eyes Media to bring THE SACRIFICE ZONE, Julie Winokur’s powerful film about the fight for environmental justice in Newark, to teachers and students throughout the region. In June, Montclair Film opened its doors for the first time in over a year to celebrate our Emerging Filmmaker Competition (EFC) winners. Clearly, even COVID could not dampen the spirits and creativity of these young filmmakers! We held three red carpet ceremonies to award the 42 EFC winners and were thrilled to welcome filmmakers from as far as California! As the world began to open up, our 2021 Summer Academy successfully launched with COVID safety protocols in place. In addition to six filmmaking workshops, tweens and teens enjoyed workshops in Screenwriting, Acting for Film and TV, Editing, Visual EFX, Comedy Writing, Stand-up Comedy, Podcasting, and Directing while our 2021 Summer Mini-Camp offered adults a choice of online or in-person classes. Less than a week after summer classes wrapped, Hurricane Ida ravaged our building, destroying our media labs, storytelling studio, and cinema, as well as our equipment. While some of our fall classes have been postponed or moved online, we remain optimistic as we continue to rebuild and serve our resilient creative community. As always, we are so very grateful to our dedicated instructors, to our generous donors who help make our programs and classes accessible to all, and to our students who make it all worthwhile! Wishing you all a healthy and happy year to come. Warm regards,
Sue Hollenberg Education Director Montclair Film

We’ve been working hard to create a safe and respectful environment for our patrons to come back together and experience the magic of moviegoing once again. And we can’t wait to get started with our 2021 Opening Film, THE FRENCH DISPATCH. Wes Anderson (THE ROYAL TENENBAUMS, THE LIFE AQUATIC WITH STEVE ZISSOU) has earned a reputation as one of the cinema’s most distinctive visual stylists. In his new film THE FRENCH DISPATCH, Anderson has created a love letter to journalists, following the exploits of a band of writers, editors, and essayists working to publish The French Dispatch, a fictional twentieth century magazine, published in a fictional French city. The film, structured as a collection of stories from the magazine, is at once delightful and thoughtful, as interested in the history of cinema as it is the magazine itself, a perfect marriage of ideas and visual storytelling. Featuring an all-star cast at the top of its game, THE FRENCH DISPATCH is a wonderful, welcome return to the movies. Montclair Film is proud to present THE FRENCH DISPATCH as the Opening Night Film of the 10th Annual Montclair Film Festival. This program is co-presented by Investors Bank A Searchlight Release

DIONNE WARWICK: DON’T MAKE ME OVER
aturday, October 23 S 4:00pm The Wellmont
Directors: Dave Wooley, David Heilbroner Producer: Dave Wooley USA, 95 min Born and raised in the Oranges in New Jersey, Dionne Warwick found singing through her family, who were members of the legendary gospel group the Drinkard Singers. Singing in church and with her family inspired her to study music in college, where she started singing backup vocals on recordings. But after a fateful meeting with the composer Burt Bacharach and the lyricist Hal David, Warwick’s career took off, with songs like “Walk On By,” “Alfie,” and “I Say a Little Prayer” establishing her as one of pop music’s most beautiful interpreters of contemporary music. And that’s just the beginning of a story and career that spans decades. DIONNE WARWICK: DON’T MAKE ME OVER is a celebration of Warwick’s amazing life and work, spanning her incredible singing career, to her pioneering advocacy for AIDS research, to her recent arrival on Twitter and beyond. Montclair Film is proud to present DIONNE WARWICK: DON’T MAKE ME OVER as the Documentary Centerpiece of the 10th Annual Montclair Film Festival.

Director: Scott Morris Producers: Scott Morris, Kelly Sheehan USA, 86 min AMERICAN RIVER is a new documentary by Scott Morris about a four-day kayak journey down the Passaic River, one of the most beautiful and neglected waterways in the United States. The story centers on Mary Bruno, who spent her childhood fearing the polluted stretch of the Passaic near her home and returns decades later to rediscover the river of her youth. The film is a cinematic adventure that follows Ms. Bruno and river guide Carl Alderson as they travel from the Passaic’s pristine headwaters to its toxic mouth in Newark Bay. Along the way, the filmmaker engages residents, experts and advocates in candid conversations that reveal the Passaic’s history, geology and ecology. How did this powerful and once-celebrated river become one of the most contaminated in America? Can it be saved? The Passaic is an archetype for thousands of rivers across America facing similar reckonings.

Programming Welcome Dear Friends, On behalf of the staff of the 10th Annual Montclair Film Festival, we are thrilled to welcome you back to the movies! The past year and a half have been an extremely challenging time, with the COVID-19 pandemic forcing a shift in the film industry that has brought movies into our homes faster than ever before, with cinemas and film festivals required to re-imagine their events to include virtual, drive-in, and outdoor offerings to survive. In 2020, we were proud to launch our Virtual Cinema, and we want to thank everyone who took the time to explore our year-round virtual screenings at home; your support and interest in our programming meant the world to us as we worked to bring the best new films to you each week. This past summer, we announced that Montclair Film would be taking over the operation of The Clairidge, and we are proud to say that our team will be selecting films for this beloved six-screen cinema on a year-round basis. We have been hard at work this summer, readying The Clairidge for launch, and we are so excited to open our doors during the 2021 Montclair Film Festival, followed by year-round exhibition of the high quality, independent, non-fiction, and international films for which The Clairidge is known, beginning on Friday, November 5, 2021. If you’re planning to come back to the movies, we encourage you to become a Montclair Film Member, as we will be offering discounted tickets to films all year long, as well as special member perks like advanced tickets for the annual film festival, fundraiser, and more. And with our Education Center and Cinema505 severely damaged by flooding during the recent Tropical Storm Ida, your Membership and attendance at our festival, films, and classes provides our organization with crucial year-round support at a time when we need it most. This year’s festival features a wonderful array of films from around the world, and we hope you will take the time to explore the program and find the films that interest you. If the program looks a little different this year, that’s because we have taken extra precautions to space the screenings out a little more, in the hopes of reducing lines, in-person waiting, and to give more time between films for cleaning of our theaters. All of our theaters feature new COVID compliant air filtering systems, and we ask that all attendees be vaccinated and masked for all screenings as we, together, prioritize the health and safety of all of our patrons, volunteers, staff, and guests. Have a great festival and thank you for your enduring support! We look forward to seeing you in the cinemas, talking about the movies, calling on you for Q&As, and having a great event together again. THANK YOU for being a part of the 10th Annual Montclair Film Festival!

This darkly comedic journey from director Joachim Trier (OSLO, AUGUST 31) is a biting take on the cinematic romance in the modern age, and earned Reinsve the Best Actress Prize at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.

HOW TO USE THE GRID Building a festival schedule is never easy, but we hope this grid will help you put together a plan for the films and events you want to attend at the 2021 Montclair Film Festival. Here are some tips to know about using the Grid to schedule your festival experience: Make a schedule based on when you are free, not what is playing. Your time is important, and you can’t see everything. Try drawing lines across the Grid that reflect when you can actually attend, and find a film that interests you in when you are available. The boxes do not match the film lengths, but instead, are designed to include extra time for Q&As. Use the end of the box to draw a line to your next film; if they don’t overlap, you should be able stay for the Q&A and make it to your next movie. Always refer to the website to confirm your schedule. Things change sometimes, films and events get added at the last minute, and adjustments to the schedule have to be made. Our website at MontclairFilm.org will always have the latest, up-to-the-minute information on scheduling.
For updates to the schedule, please check our website at MontclairFilm.org.
