A to Sze: Collecting at MAM (2000–2025)

FEBRUARY 8–JULY 6, 2025

The title of this show playfully references the names of two featured, prominent contemporary artists, Derrick Adams and Sarah Sze, and reflects the wide range of MAM’s historic, modern, and contemporary art collected during the past 25 years. Enjoy some of our recent acquisitions that have been rarely or never seen before, which together demonstrate the rich diversity of American culture from about 1880 to present. This exhibition encompasses a range of themes, styles, art movements, and mediums. Themes of spirituality, history, global cultures, artistic agency, and social justice resonate throughout the variety of works on view, acquired as purchases and generous donations. MAM continues to make strategic additions to the collection with artwork by both established and emerging American and Indigenous artists, with an emphasis on members of

New Works and Media— George Inness: Visionary Landscapes

MAY 16, 2025–MAY 31, 2026

This salon-style reinstallation features 19 works by celebrated American landscape artist George Inness (1825–1894). Every important period of Inness’s career is represented, from his earliest, more realist work of the 1840s, rooted in European landscape conventions, to the artist’s final, more abstract expressions of his belief in the total unity of material and spiritual existence. To celebrate the centennial of Inness’s birth on May 1, 1825, the east wall of the gallery will be newly installed with three paintings, including A Cloudy Day, Milton (1877–1880), on loan from MAM trustee Lisa Amato and her husband, Joseph. A recent donation and a loaned work from Frank and Katherine Martucci will also be on view. Furthermore, for three familiar works, the new installation includes video interviews of Indigenous artists and scholars G. Peter Jemison (Seneca Nation), Nathan Young (Delaware Tribe of Indians), and Betsy Richards (Cherokee Nation), who discuss these Native places in regards to displacement and dwelling, history and power, as well as Inness as an artist.

AACC Founders’ Fellow Exhibition: Dignified Vulnerability: Jazlyne Sabree

FEBRUARY 8–MARCH 23, 2025

This exhibition explores dignity and vulnerability, oppression and safety, in the context of the African American experience. Beginning with my own childhood traumas related to the impact of the criminal justice system on my family, concluding with present-day injustices, and everything in between, I explore the juxtaposition of dignity and vulnerability in a people who are institutionally surveilled and mistreated.

Tyler Chan: Montclair Snap Memories

APRIL 12–MAY 25, 2025

The Montclair Art Museum is excited to present a solo exhibition for a talented young photographer, Tyler Chan. Chan, now studying photography in college in the Netherlands, created the body of work presented in this exhibition while a student at Montclair High School. This series of intimate photographs document the artist’s life as a Chinese American high school student in Montclair. The work explores the complexities of adolescence through the lens of a bicultural experience, presenting a vivid and evocative visual diary that reflects both the universal struggles and the unique challenges of racial diversity and division, even in a seemingly inclusive community like Montclair.

Platinum to Postcards: Collecting Photography at MAM (2000–2025)

APRIL 12–FALL 2025

Since 2000, the breadth of the Montclair Art Museum’s collection of photography has grown considerably through strategic purchases and donations of historic, modern, and contemporary works. The title of this show refers to the nineteenth-century platinum printing technique, which afforded many options for achieving rich, subtle hues ranging from charcoal gray to sepia. Karl Struss’s platinum print Lower Manhattan (1911–1912) is featured, along with selected works by Bill Dane (b. 1938), affectionately sent as photo postcards to his friend Diana Edkins, a longtime curator and scholar of photography who donated them to MAM last year.

Family, Community, Belonging: Works from the Collection

THROUGH JANUARY 11, 2026

This exhibition explores family and community through themes of belonging, diversity, and inclusion. Highlights include 19thcentury portraits of European-American families, Elizabeth Catlett’s depiction of an African-American grandmother and grandson, and Caren King Choi’s portrayal of her Asian-American nieces and nephews. Works by Indigenous artists Melanie Yazzie (Diné) and Mario Martinez (Pascua Yaqui) further reflect shared experiences across race, gender, ethnicity, and region.

SUNDAY, APRIL 13

Presented by Camryn Dewar (Métis), this lecture recital explores the portrayal of Indigenous women in Canadian opera from Canada’s Welcome (1879) to Missing (2017) and Indians on Vacation (2021).

Through live operatic performances with piano accompaniment and a visual presentation, Dewar examines historical context, creator and cast backgrounds, Indigenous languages, and the shift from fetishized portrayals to authentic representations. The performance reflects on colonization’s legacy, the resilience of Indigenous women, and music’s role in fostering understanding and reconciliation, highlighting rarely performed works in the United States.
