Lori Field: Tiger Tarot SEPTEMBER 10, 2022–JANUARY 1, 2023

Lori Field: Tiger Tarot is a multidisciplinary exhibition centered on tarot cards the artist created during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic. This exhibition is the first solo museum show for Lori Field (b. 1955), a resident of Montclair, NJ. Known for her mysterious modern-day fairytales in multiple mediums, Field employs a reoccurring cast of human and animal hybrids to explore themes of identity, vulnerability, and spirituality.

Her characters, predominantly female or androgynous, serve as foils or narrators.

Organized by guest curator Kathy Imlay, the exhibition is designed to reflect Field’s aesthetic, as well as her obsessive imagery and practice. Featuring over 60 works of art in 12 mediums, Lori Field: Tiger Tarot aims to take the viewer on a journey of divination...at once humorous, irreverent, poetic, and profound.

George Inness: Visionary Landscapes SEPTEMBER 10, 2022–2024

Art is a subtle essence. It is not a thing of surfaces, but a moving spirit…

The Montclair Art Museum is pleased to present a significant new installation of its world-renowned George Inness collection, described by leading Inness scholar and Little Falls resident Dr. Adrienne Baxter Bell as “the greatest Inness collection in the world.”

For the first time at MAM, Inness’s work is displayed in a salon-style hanging, which was the norm until the early 20th century.

Paintings filled the walls in Salon exhibitions in Europe and America from floor to ceiling due to the amount of work produced, often including works across an array of sizes and genres. Featuring a new acquisition from Inness’s Italian period, Twilight (1875), this hanging affords the rare opportunity to show the majority of Inness’s works in the collection, several of which will be available for viewing for the first time in many years.

From My Home to Yours: Caroline Monnet and Laura Ortman MAY 7, 2022–JANUARY 1, 2023

This prismatic video, sound, and print installation transforms Rand Gallery into an immersive, resonant space to pause and reflect on home, long-distance connection, and the places in between. As longtime friends and collaborators, Montreal-based filmmaker Caroline Monnet (Anishinaabe/French) and Brooklyn-based musician Laura Ortman (White Mountain Apache) exchanged images and sounds across miles. The resulting film layers abstracted natural forms and Super-8 movies from Monnet’s mother’s community of Kitigan Zibi, Quebec, with Ortman’s local field recordings and experimental violin. From My Home to Yours premiered at Montreal’s MOMENTA Biennale de L’Image in 2021 (lead curator: Stefanie Hessler). MAM’s installation is accompanied by a performance series by Indigenous artists exploring its themes of “home,” curated by Montclair-based Betsy Theobald Richards (Cherokee Nation).

Classes and Programs: Kids, Teens, and Families Families, kids, and teens can explore their creative side and enjoy some time together, learning about art and joining a creative community at MAM. Our weekly Sunday Studio features fun projects, inspired by current exhibitions in our galleries, for the whole family to enjoy. In our Yard School of Art classes, kids and teens can experiment with new mediums in our Fine Art, Ceramics and Digital Media Studios, gaining tools for self-expression and finding their unique creative voice.

Offerings this fall include Printmaking, Studio Foundations, our new Video Game Design course, and more!

Classes and Workshops: Adults Yard School studio art classes and workshops offer adults of all ages and abilities an opportunity to build artistic skills and explore creative ideas. Course offerings range from technical instruction in traditional media to classes encouraging exploration and experimental techniques. Our small class sizes ensure individual direction from our teaching artists in a community of people who are as enthusiastic about learning and creating as you are. We also offer one-on-one private studio art instruction tailored to the individual interests, schedules, and needs of the student.

Class offerings include Art for the Nonartist, Collage, and iPadology: Abstract Photography with the iPad plus workshops like Paper Quilling/La Filigrana and Wine and Wheel.

Art Meets Jazz THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 8, 2022 7 p.m.

Art Meets Jazz is a jazz performance series held in partnership between the Montclair Art Museum and the African American Cultural Committee (AACC). This performance series delivers an annual organic program, highlighting the talent of local jazz musicians and often includes other artistic elements such as dance, spoken word, or exhibition.

This year’s event will feature Jazz vocalist Carla Cook and her trio. Carla will perform a selection of original compositions, as well as renditions of classic songs in the genre. Cook has an improvisational style that is steeped in the swing tradition yet eclectic and brimming with fresh interpretations, earning her a Grammy nomination for her debut album It’s All About Love.

Indigenous Peoples’ Weekend

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 8– MONDAY, OCTOBER 10, 2022

In conjunction with the installation From My Home to Yours, on October 10, celebrated composer Brent Michael Davids (Mohican/ Munsee-Lenape)—a co-director of Manhattan’s Lenape Center—will narrate his pointedly humorous composition The Last of James Fenimore Cooper at MAM performed by an invited string quintet. The evening includes films by Davids and conversation about being home in Lenapehoking.

On October 8, join us for a photowalk with Jeremy Dennis (Shinnecock), featuring new acquisitions of his photography. October 9 offers two events: open rehearsal with Brent Michael Davids and a Sunday Studio with Jeremy Dennis: Creation Story Collages.

The concert and rehearsal are free to the public, made possible by a grant from the New Jersey Council for the Humanities, a state partner of the National Endowment for the Humanities.

The Art and Practice of Tarot: An Evening with Lori Field, Pam Grossman, and Laetitia Barbier 36th Annual Julia Norton Babson Lecture THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 17 7 p.m.

The esoteric, mystical art of tarot has fascinated artists and enthusiasts for centuries.

Lori Field (artist), Pam Grossman (author of Waking the Witch and creator and host of The Witch Wave podcast), and Laetitia Barbier (tarot reader and intuitive counselor) will discuss and demonstrate the practice and cultural criticism of tarot, using Field’s images.

The evening will be moderated by guest curator Kathy Imlay and is held in conjunction with the exhibition Lori Field: Tiger Tarot.

This event is funded through the generous perpetual gift from the Julia Norton Babson Memorial Fund.
