Head Coach

G ene Carlson

Gene Carlson was named head coach of the Montana Grizzlies, December 13, 1976. Carlson, an assistant coach and executive secretary of the Montana Century Club for two years, stepped into the head coaching position following Jack Swarthout’s resignation after nine years at UM. Carlson’s three-year record at UM is 13-18 including a 4-2 conference record last year, UM’s best finish in eight seasons. Carlson, 47, is a native of Great Falls and a 1949 graduate of Great Falls High. He has a health and physical education degree from the University of Montana (1954) and earned his M.S. in public administration from George Washington University, Washington, D.C. (1967). Carlson played linebacker and fullback for the 1950, ’51 and ’52 Grizzlies. He also played varsity baseball at UM and spent two years in the New York Yankees’ organization after college. He served two years in the Air Force. Carlson coached football at Great Falls High for 15 years, winning five class AA championships and posting a 108-32-8 record before coming to UM in February of 1974. Gene and his wife Kathy have five children, Jeff, Bruce, Wendie, Kim and Stephanie.
