The University of Montana in Missoula is located in a mountain forest setting in beautiful W estern Montana. It is halfway between Glacier and Yellowstone National Parks. Four wilderness areas are located nearby Missoula. The natural surroundings offer excellent opportunities for hunting, fishing, backpacking, river floating, camping and other outdoor recreational pursuits. Two excellent winter ski areas are located within minutes of the University. Several other ski areas are only a couple of hours away by car. UM owns and operates its own golf course adjacent to campus. The University of Montana is one of the W est’s pioneers in education and was chartered February 17,1893. The school opened in September, 1895, with fifty students enrolling the first day. Located on 201 acres at the base of Mount Sentinel, UM has grown from fifty students and seven faculty members to a present enrollment of 8,300 and approximately 450 fulltime state supported faculty positions. Throughout its history, the University of Montana has

sustained a high standard of academic excellence in teaching, research and service. UM offers associate of arts degrees in two areas and bachelor’s degrees in 58 fields. It offers m aster’s degrees in 54 programs and doctoral degrees in 13. The College of Arts and Sciences, which is the core of the University, includes a full range of programs and courses in the life sciences, physical sciences, social sciences and humanities. The College also offers curricula in interdisciplinary fields ranging from ethnic studies to interdepartmental studies. Seven professional schools complete the academic program—Business Administration, Fine Arts, Journalism, Education, Forestry, Law, Pharmacy and Allied Health Sciences. The aim of the University is to provide its students with a relaxing and meaningful learning experience with the best facilities possible. The administration, faculty and staff strive for this goal.

President Richard Bowers Dr. Richard C. Bowers assumed duties as the 13th president of the University of Montana on July 4,1974. Bowers came to UM from Northern Illinois University, DeKalb, where he served as vice president and provost, and professor of chemistry. As Northern Illinoisâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;provost, he was chief academic officer of the University and had overall responsibility for many other university activities, including computer services, admissions and records, and the library. He also represented Northern Illinois University to the Illinois Board of Regents, the Board of Higher Education of the State of Illinois, and the State Legislature. Prior to being named vice president and provost in 1969, Bowers served as the Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at NIU from 1965-69. Bowers received his B.S. degree in chemistry from the University of Michigan in 1948 and his Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Minnesota in 1953. He taught at Northwestern University in Evanston, 111., beginning in 1954 and became Director of Chemical Laboratories and associate chairman of the Department of Chemistry at Northwestern in 1963.

Athletic Director Harley Lewis Harley W. Lewis was named athletic director at the University of Montana effective April 14, 1976. He had served as acting athletic director from July 1,1975. A 1964 graduate of UM with an M.S. in health, physical education and recreation, Lewis became track and cross country coach at UM in 1966. Prior to assuming coaching responsibilities at UM, the 1959 graduate of Butte High School coached two years at the University of Portland. Lewis served as cross country coach until 1976 and won nine Big Sky titles until resigning the position. He served as track coach through the 1978 season. While track coach, Lewis won the conference title in 1972. He has been named Big Sky Coach of the Year in cross country and track, ten times. He has served on numerous national committees, worked with U.S. Olympic endeavors and coached several All-American performers at Montana.

Head Coach

G ene Carlson

Gene Carlson was named head coach of the Montana Grizzlies, December 13, 1976. Carlson, an assistant coach and executive secretary of the Montana Century Club for two years, stepped into the head coaching position following Jack Swarthout’s resignation after nine years at UM. Carlson’s three-year record at UM is 13-18 including a 4-2 conference record last year, UM’s best finish in eight seasons. Carlson, 47, is a native of Great Falls and a 1949 graduate of Great Falls High. He has a health and physical education degree from the University of Montana (1954) and earned his M.S. in public administration from George Washington University, Washington, D.C. (1967). Carlson played linebacker and fullback for the 1950, ’51 and ’52 Grizzlies. He also played varsity baseball at UM and spent two years in the New York Yankees’ organization after college. He served two years in the Air Force. Carlson coached football at Great Falls High for 15 years, winning five class AA championships and posting a 108-32-8 record before coming to UM in February of 1974. Gene and his wife Kathy have five children, Jeff, Bruce, Wendie, Kim and Stephanie.

Pat Dolan begins his fourth year on the UM football staff and coaches the linebackers and receivers again this season. He will also work with the wide receivers. He is a 1966 graduate of G reat Falls C entral High School in M ontana and attended UM where he earned a B.S. in health and physical education in 1973. Dolan played in the Grizzly secondary during unbeaten seasons in 1969 and 1970. He served as defensive coordinator at Libby High School in Libby, M ontana from 1973-75 before accepting the UM appointm ent. He and his wife Shelley have two children, N athen and Heather.

Ernest “Pokey” Allen joined the UM staff in D ecem ber of 1976. He is defensive coordinator and w orks with the defensive backs. Allen graduated from Missoula County High School in 1961, after starring in football and basketball at MCHS. He was a three-year starter in football at the University of Utah and earned a bachelor of science degree in 1965. He was an honorable mention All-American, a team captain and m ost valuable player in the Liberty Bowl in 1965. Allen played in the Canadian Football League for three years before becom ing an assistant coach at Simon Fraser University in 1968. He was nam ed co-head coach in 1972 and retained that position until coming back to M ontana.

Gary Ekegren joined the football staff as defensive line coach in D ecem ber of 1976. He is a native of Harlem, M ontana, graduated from Harlem High School and received his bachelor’s degree from UM in 1963. He earned a m aster’s degree in health, physical education and recreation from M ontana in 1974. Ekegren was head football coach at Harlem High School for six years having previously coached football, basketball and track at Havre Junior High School. He served as first assistant at Missoula Sentinel High School from 1972-73 and becam e head coach at Sentinel in 1974. Ekegren and his wife K aren have three children, Travis, Shane and Ashley.

The newest m em ber of the Grizzly coaching staff, Bob Lowry cam e to UM in May of 1979. A 1964 graduate of M ontana State, Lowry is from Wolf Point, M ontana. His collegiate career at Stanford University was hastily ended with a knee injury. He was a four-year letterm an in football and basketball and three-tim er in track. He has coached at Glendive (M ontana) the past two seasons, and has won back-to-back State titles. Lowry coached at Plenty wood High from 1964-68, where his team s went 25-6-1; at G reat Falls C entral from 1968-71; at Plentywood again from 1971-76 and then to Glendive. Bob and his wife, Sharon have three children, twins Bob and Genie, and Mike.

Athletic Personnel

Dave begins his second year as the sports information director, handling press guides, releases, game program s and advertising, and prom oting Grizzly sports. He was previously the sports editor at the Fresno Guide (Calif.). He received his B.A. in journalism at Fresno State in 1975. While attending FSU he worked as a student assistant in the sports information office for three years, and also wrote for the Fresno Bee. His UM basketball press guide and basketball program s were recently honored by College Sports Information D irector’s of America (COSIDA), by placing in District 7 competition.

Marshall’s job at UM is three-fold. He serves as assistant athletic director in charge of business affairs as well as head track and cross country coach for the men. This is his second year at M ontana, coming from Stanford where he was head cross country coach and assistant track coach for m en for the past ten years. He is a 1957 graduate of USC where he lettered in both track and cross country. He earned a m aster’s degree from USC in 1958. He is considered one of the nation’s outstanding distance coaches.

Information

Beginning his first year as UM’s faculty representative, Evan has been an instructor here since 1969. He is now a ctin g c h a irm a n of th e D epartm ent of G eography at UM. He earned his B.A. at the University of W ashington in 1963, his M.A. at W ashington in 1965, and his Ph.D. from W ashington in 1970. Prior to his UM teaching career he taught at W ashington (1966-69) and Colorado State (1965-66). From Tacom a, W ashington, D enney is associated with several professional organizations. He determ ines academ ic eligibility for UM athletes.

Dick joined the UM staff in July of 1979. Seam an has lived in Missoula since 1949. He spent all m ost 24 years in the United States Marine C orps, before retiring in 1966. His last eight years in the service he was in charge of physical conditioning and all athletic equipm ent. A veteran of W orld W ar II, the K orean and Vietnam wars, Seam an played varsity football for the Marines. He played halfback and end. Originally from Williamsport, Pennsylvania, Seam an is m arried to a Missoula native (Nina).

Naseby is the only m en’s athletic trainer M ontana has known. A m onth after his graduation from UM in 1935, he was appointed M ontana’s first athletic trainer. He was a standout athlete while attending high school in Milwaukee and becam e one of M ontana’s finest all-around athletes earning nine varsity letters in football, basketball and track. He has received many honors and accolades during his 44 years at M ontana, including the Grizzly Cup, which he won in 1935 and his son Pete won in 1958.

G ary has been ticket m anager at UM since 1966. In 1978 he was also appointed fieldhouse m anager. He schedules all events in Adam s Fieldhouse and at D ornblaser Stadium in addition to handling ticket distribution. He is a native of Ronan, M ontana and graduated in accounting from the Missoula Business College in 1962. He gained extensive experience in accounting and auditing before assuming his responsibilities at Montana.

Offense: Consistency the Key What will be difference about Montana’s offense this fall? Good depth in the offensive backfield for coach Gene Carlson’s Grizzlies, that’s the difference. That is something all coaches appreciate. At quarterback two players looked very impressive in the spring. Incumbent Bob Boyes, who is an outstanding dropback passer with an accurate, strong arm, returns. Pushing Boyes for the starting berth will be redshirt Bart Andrus, a rollout passer, with very quick feet. Boyes is one of eight returning starters on what will be a veteran laden Grizzly offensive crew. Carlson’s primary concern is the experienced, but still relatively young offensive line. “We have some good people coming back on the offensive line,” Carlson said, “but except for two Big Sky Conference picks (Guy Bingham and Allen Green), they are still young. The way they jell as a unit will have a lot to do with out success.” Carlson said he expects to “maintain the philosophy we’ve had in the past — to run the ball and pass the ball with equal effectiveness.” He added the Grizzlies plan to continue the “shot gun flex” formation initiated last season. “It opens up our game plan when we need to.” In the rushing department UM has two talented underclassmen, Rocky Klever and Bobby Cerkovnik. Klever is the returning leading ground gainer, with 514 yards last year. That statistic is even more impressive, considering the junior started the season at quarterback. He also led the team in total offense in 1978 with 815 yards. Sophomore “Bobby C ” scored three times on only 37 attempts, and has great lateral speed. At fullback, senior, and three-time letterman Doug Egbert also has the ability to “smell” the goalline. Egbert scored four times on only 38 carries. Backing him up is Kelly Johnson, who was moved to FB in spring practice. He is an exceptional athlete, and could become the starting fullback.

Tight End Allen Green

Wide receiver is a position with several returning lettermen, although gone is Vern Kelly, who set a UM career receptions record (83) in two seasons. However, sure-handed Jim Hard returns, and is expected to fill the void. Sophomore Billy Dolan played outstanding in the spring. Veterans Fat Sullivan and Bill Lane are more than adequate backups. Tight end is one of the strong positions, with All-Big Sky firstteamer Allen Green back. He has caught 37 passes for 526 yards and eight TDs the past two years, and is a fine blocker. On the offensive line Guy Bingham was a first team all conference selection, despite being moved from center to tackle last year. He is back at center, and is the Grizzlies’top blocker, and a pro prospect. “We expect a 200 percent effort and a lot of leadership from A1 and Guy on the offensive line,” Carlson said. Lettermen Pat Norwood and Brian McHugh will be at the offensive tackle slots, with veterans Mark Eickelmann and Basil Jones at guard. Jones is still recovering from a serious leg injury, and may have to redshirt this season. Carlton Lamb, a redshirt last year, and letterman Jim Rooney are hoping to earn starting jobs at guard. “The loss of Basil Jones will be a big one if it happens,” said Carlson. “I think we have adequate replacements, but Basil enabled us to do more offensively.” UM expects a good offensive punch in the kicking department. Sophomore Raul Allegre booted 11 of 16 soccer-style field goals, ranking him fifth in Division 1-AA, and should be stronger in ’79. On paper the Grizzlies could have one of their better offensive squads in a few years, but as Carlson knows, ability to control the ball is essential. “We must move the ball effectively and use the clock to give our defense the rest they need,” he said. “I expect our defense to be the strength of our team in 1979.”

Defense: Experience, Depth Return Defensive coordinator Pokey Allen is walking around with an optimistic air about him this season. The reason? The reason is nine returning starters, and several other players who saw a lot of action in the ’78 campaign. “This could be one of our best defensive teams ever,” Allen said. Head coach Gene Carlson agrees, saying, “Defense will be our strength this year.” The secondary returns five seniors, all of whom have started at one time for UM. All-conference free safety Greg Dunn and cornerback Scot Ferda, also an All-Big Sky pick last year, are solid. Cornerback Ed Cerkovnik and strong safety Jay Becker are both two-time lettermen. Randy Laird, only a sophomore, played a lot last season. Kelly Johnson could play almost anywhere in the defensive backfield, unless he is at fullback. The defensive front is led by first team all-conference choice Sam Martin at right end, hard-hitting Arnie Rigoni at right tackle, Bret Barrick at left tackle, and letterman Pat Curry at left end, is a star of the future. There are several top-notch backups, giving Montana exceptional depth. This group (minus graduated Steve Fisher) is the primary reason the Grizzlies led the conference in rush defense. All-American candidate Kent Clausen, the team ’s leading tackier (102) a year ago, anchors the defense at middle linebacker. He was an all-conference pick. He can pass cover extremely well for his size (6-5,235), and picked off four passes last year, returning one for a TD. His backup, Roily Starkey, a freshman redshirt,

could follow in his footsteps. On the outside at linebacker are Jim Hogan and Barry Sacks, both seniors and two-time lettermen who have started in the past. Dave Gleason, another senior who has started, and junior Mike Sloan give UM good depth. “The linebacker crew should be more than adequate,” Carlson said. “The defensive front has more depth than any group on the team, although our secondary is also a quality group.” Carlson and Allen said they plan to continue with the 4-3 and “blitz package” which was very effective last season. “The defense will obviously be tailored to overcome weaknesses that appeared in 1978,” Carlson said. Lettermen Marty Andrews, Dave Paoli, Ron Sharkey and Mike Carroll are four defensive linemen who will be hard to keep out of the lineup. There are also a couple of freshmen who could see playing time here. Junior Terry Thomas took over the punting chores for Allen Green midway through last season, and finished with a 38.6-yard average in 29 attempts. He kicked a pair of 57-yarders in one game. Green finished ranked in the top five nationally, and QB Bart Andrus was an outstanding prep punter, and could be used. Green averaged almost 40 yards (39.8) on 43 punts. With 17 returning starters, and 41 lettermen back, UM’s 4-2 conference finish in ’78—it’s best in eight seasons—could be a sign of things to come. Nineteen-seventy-nine could be The Year of the Grizzlies.

A Linebacker for the NFL His nickname is “Claw,” and when he gets his “claws” on opposing running backs they usually go down. Kent Clausen wants to play in the National Football League, and there are several running backs who know he can. Some of the scouts who have looked at Kent feel he has the tools needed to make it in the competitive world of professional football. He has the size (6-5,235) and speed (4.8 in the 40, pro timing), and just as importantly, the desire to excel. Clausen’s success last season at middle linebacker is more of a feat than meets the eye. Last year was his first season at middle linebacker. He was recruited as a quarter back, and moved to defensive end his sophomore season at Montana. He was then moved to outside linebacker his sophomore year, and the middle in 1978. His response to his “new” position was 102 tackles, 40 of which were unassisted, four interceptions, four sacks, a fumble recovery and three pass deflections. “He improved with every game,” said Grizzly head coach Gene Carlson. “The way he plays linebacker it looks as though he’s been there for years. He can do nothing but get better.” The durable Clausen started all 11 games for UM. He had 10 or more tackles in six of 11 games. Against San Jose State he had 22 tackles, including 14 solos. He had 13 tackles and two interceptions against Idaho State, 14 tackles versus Northern Arizona, 11 against Weber State and 10 in the Montana-Idaho game. Clausen was recently granted another year of eligibility, because of an injury his freshman season. He is eligible for the draft this year. defensive leader for the Grizzlies in 1979. The only returning All-Big Sky player (second team) at inside linebacker, Clausen has been mentioned in several preseason publications as an All-American candidate. “He has the ability and the determination to make it in the pros,” said Carlson. “He is an All-American caliber player both physically and mentally.” From Aberdeen, South Dakota, Clausen was an outstanding all-around athlete at Roncalli High School, where he graduated in 1976. As a prep he was all-state in football and basketball and was the state titilist in the discus. He holds his school’s career rebounding record, as well as most points (46) and rebounds (32). Clausen, a business major, also had success in the classroom last year. He was named to the All-Big Sky academic team, and maintains a 3.63 GPA. Kent Clausen has another season remaining after this one if he elects to remain. But, if he has anything to say about it he should be on an NFL roster in 1980. Sam Martin 6-4, 240 Defensive

Guy Bingham 6-3, 240 Center v*

Sam is another Big Sky first-teamer. He is very fast for his size (5.0 in the 40), and has quick feet. He was the Grizzlies’ leading tackier in 1977 with 89 tackles, and had 72 last year, ranking as the top lineman and third on the team. Sam is one of the main reasons UM was No. 1 against the rush in the conference last season. He had outstanding games in Grizzly wins over Weber State and Boise State, with nine and 10 tackles, respectively. He could be drafted late in the NFL.

Guy displayed his versatility on the offensive line last season, when he was shifted to tackle from center, and was still named to the All-Big Sky Conference first unit. He is a top candidate for postseason honors. Pro scouts have clocked the 240-pounder in 4.9-5.0 in the 40. Bingham is the best blocker for the Grizzlies, and an extremely hard hitter. He is a total center, snapping on punts, field goals and PATs. A probable mid-round draft selection, Guy started at guard as a freshman and sophomore, played tackle last year, and is now back at center.

Allen Green 6-3, 225 Tight En

A1 rates as the No. 1 tight end in the conference. He is coming off a fine season, in which he was selected to the Big Sky’s first team. In the last two seasons he has caught 37 passes for 526 yards and eight touchdowns, including six in 1977. He has tremendous body strength, and can block and catch passes with the best. He is also an outstanding punter, and despite giving up his kicking duties midway through the ’78 season, he finished ranked fifth nationally in Division 1-AA (39.8 avg.). A hard working honors candidate, he runs a 4.9 in the 40.

Greg Dunn 5- 10^180 Free S

Listed as one of America’s top prep halfbacks his senior year in high school, Greg has lived up to the expectations of the UM coaches. He was a first team AllBig Sky pick last year, both as a player and academically. He has been ranked in the top 10 in the nation in kickoff returns the past two seasons. Last year he had a 22.8yard average on 18 carries, and a 25.4 average the previous year. He was moved to free safety early last year. He had 75 tackles, ranking him number two on the team. He has seven career interceptions, including four in 1977. According to UM defensive coordinator Pokey Allen, Dunn, who runs a 4.6 in the 40, has the potential to play pro football. He could be a late draft pick.

Raul was one of the prem ier field goal kickers in the country last season, and finished ranked 5th nationally, connecting on 11 of 16 three-pointers. He was a Big Sky C onference honorable m ention last year. A soccer-style kicker, Allegre was a foreign exchange student at Shelton High School in W ashington, where he began kicking his senior year. His longest FG was a 47-yarder. An “A” student, he is trilingual. Physics and Math major. Birthdate: June 15, 1959

Bart, a redshirt last season after transferring from O regon State, show ed a lot of potential in the spring. He had an outstanding spring game, completing 11 of 16 passes for 131 yards and a touchdow n. He was an all-conference pick at L.A. Valley Junior College. Bret is improving rapidly each year at his defensive left tackle slot. He has excel lent quickness for his size. He had 23 tackles last season, including seven unas sisted stops. A good pro prospect, Barrick was an All-State (A) player at Fergus County High School, where he was coached by Fred Zano. B ecker should start for the Grizzlies at strong safety this year. Jay picked off three passes last year, including one against Idaho State which he returned 37 yards for a touchdow n. Bob is listed as the No. 1 signal caller entering fall practice. He is an outstanding dropback passer, with a very strong arm. A walk-on a year ago, Boyes participated in nine gam es last season, connecting on 46 of 90 passes for 510 yards and two TDs. He looked outstanding in the spring game (11 of 15 passes for 171 yards and two scores). He lettered in three sports in junior college, including football, skiing and golf. Rich lettered last season as a freshm an, often entering the game during the thirdand-short or goal line situations. Mike has been shifted to the defensive line from linebacker this year. He was the fourth leading tackier on the defensive line last season with 24 stops. A 9.9 sprinter as a prep, Bob is expected to do big things this year. As a freshm an he gained 184 yards, and scored three times on only 37 carries, including a 39yard TD rom p against Nevada-Las Vegas. An All-American candidate (see page 14), Kent has the size and speed (4.8 in the 40, pro timing) to be an early pick in this year’s professional draft. Jim cam e off a redshirt year in a fitting m anner, finishing with 31 tackles in 1978. He should start at strongside linebacker. He is strong and runs a 4.8 in the 40. Twice a Big Sky Offensive Player of the W eek, Rocky m ade the transition from quarterback to tailback in a big way. Last season he gained 514 yards for a 4.6 average. An honors candidate, Klever received the Terry Dillon Award last year, which honors the outstanding offensive back. His coach was Don Larsen. Big Sky Conference The Big Sky Conference was formed in February, 1963, when the presidents and athletic directors of six Rocky Mountain universities met in Spokane. The original conference members were Gonzaga, Idaho, Idaho State, Montana, Montana State and Weber. Gonzaga entered the conference as a non-football playing school. The conference derived its name from a pair of Montanans and a Washington sports editor. A. B. Guthrie, Great Falls, Montana, wrote a novel entitled “The Big Sky” and Jack Hallowell, former Montana State Advertising director, promoted the Big Sky theme as a nickname for the state. Harry Missildine, Spokesman-Review sports editor, picked up the name and in a sports column promoted the name Big Sky as the name of the conference. On February 25, 1963, the conference adopted the name—Big Sky Athletic Conference. In 1970 the conference expanded to include Northern Arizona University, Flagstaff, Ariz., and Boise State College, Boise, Idaho. Both entered as football playing schools. Nevada-Reno became the newest member of the Big Sky July 1, 1979. They will compete with a full athletic program. Jack Friel became the first commissioner in 1963, and the offices were established in Pullman, Wash., Friel’s home. Following Friel’s retirement in July, 1971, the offices were moved to Boise, Idaho, and John Roning was named commissioner: Steve Belko was named commissioner and assumed duties July 1, 1977, following Roning’s retirement.

Grizzly Awards Each year five outstanding University of M ontana football players are recipients of aw ards. The Terry Dillon Award, honoring the outstanding back, was established in 1964 following the accidential death of form er Grizzly Terry Dillon. Dillon played defensive and offensive halfback for UM from 1960 to 1962. He started at defensive halfback for the National Football League M innesota Vikings. The Paul W eskam p Award was established in m em ory of Paul W eskam p, a tackle on Ed C hinske’s 1954 Grizzlies. The award honors UM’s outstanding lineman and was established by the citizens of Ronan, M ontana. The Golden Helmet Award honors the hardest hitter on the team . It was set up on a nationwide basis by the Coca-Cola Com pany in 1967. The Larry Miller Award is given in m em ory of the great Grizzly lineman and w restler who com peted for UM in 1969 and 1970. Miller died in an autom obile accident in 1974. The award honors the team ’s outstanding defensive lineman. The Steve Carlson award is given to the team ’s m ost valuable player in m em ory of the form er Grizzly football player who died in 1977. Dillon

Voice of the Grizzlies “Grizzly” Bill Schwanke is the voice of the Montana Grizzlies on KYLT radio, UM’s official station for Grizzly athletics. Beginning his ninth year broadcasting Grizzly football and basketball games, Schwanke is the only sports director KYLT has had since being awarded broadcast rights for UM athletics in 1971. Schwanke is a former sports editor for The Missoulian newspaper and a former UM sports information director. He is a 1967 graduate of UM. He has been awarded Montana’s sports broadcaster of the year award three times and given the 1977 Ed Chinske Award honoring Missoula’s outstanding sports professional.
