University of Montana
The University of Montana in Missoula is located in a mountain forest setting in beautiful Western Montana. It is halfway between Glacier and Yellowstone National Parks. Four wilderness areas are located nearby Missoula. The natural surroundings offer excellent opportunities for hunting, fishing, backpacking, river floating, camping and other outdoor recreational pursuits. Two excellent winter ski areas are located within minutes of the University. Several other ski areas are only a couple of hours away by car. UM owns and operates its own golf course adjacent to campus. The University of Montana is one of the W est’s pioneers in education and was chartered February 17,1893. The school opened in September, 1895, with fifty students enrolling the first day. Located on 201 acres at the base of Mount Sentinel, UM has grown from fifty students and seven faculty members to a present enrollment of 8,250 and approximately 450 fulltime state supported faculty positions. Throughout its history, the University of Montana has
sustained a high standard of academic excellence in teaching, research and service. UM offers associate of arts degrees in two areas and bachelor’s degrees in 58 fields. It offers master’s degrees in 54 programs and doctoral degrees in 13. The College of Arts and Sciences, which is the core of the University, includes a full range of programs and courses in the life sciences, physical sciences, social sciences and humanities. The College also offers curricula in interdisciplinary fields ranging from ethnic studies to interdepartmental studies. Seven professional schools complete the academic program—Business Administration, Fine Arts, Journalism, Education, Forestry, Law, Pharmacy and Allied Health Sciences. The aim of the University is to provide its students with a relaxing and meaningful learning experience with the best facilities possible. The administration, faculty and staff strive for this goal.

President Richard Bowers Dr. Richard C. Bowers assumed duties as the 13th president of the University of Montana on July 4,1974. Bowers came to UM from Northern Illinois University, DeKalb, where he served as vice president and provost, and professor of chemistry. As Northern Illinois’ provost, he was chief academic officer of the University and had overall responsibility for many other university activities, including computer services, admissions and records, and the library. He also represented Northern Illinois University to the Illinois Board of Regents, the Board of Higher Education of the State of Illinois, and the State Legislature. Prior to being named vice president and provost in 1969, Bowers served as the Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at NIU from 1965-69. Bowers received his B.S. degree in chemistry from the University of Michigan in 1948 and his Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Minnesota in 1953. He taught at Northwestern University in Evanston, 111., beginning in 1954 and became Director of Chemical Laboratories and associate chairman of the Department of Chemistry at Northwestern in 1963.
Athletic Director Harley Lewis Harley W. Lewis was named athletic director at the University of Montana effective April 14, 1976. He had served as acting athletic director from July 1,1975. A 1964 graduate of UM with an M.S. in health, physical education and recreation, Lewis became track and cross country coach at UM in 1966. Prior to assuming coaching responsibilities at UM, the 1959 graduate of Butte High School coached two years at the University of Portland. Lewis served as cross country coach until 1976 and won nine Big Sky titles until resigning the position. He served as track coach through the 1978 season. While track coach, Lewis won the conference title in 1972. He has been named Big Sky Coach of the Year in cross country and track, ten times. He has served on numerous national committees, worked with U.S. Olympic endeavors and coached several All-American performers at Montana.

Head Coach
G ene Carlson
Gene Carlson was named head coach of the Montana Grizzlies, December 13,1976. Carlson, an assistant coach and executive secretary of the Montana Century Club for two years, stepped into the head coaching position following Jack Swarthout’s resignation after nine years at UM. Carlson’s two-year record at UM is 8-12 following a pair of 4-6 seasons. Carlson, 46, is a native of Great Falls and a 1949 graduate of Great Falls High. He has a health and physical education degree from the University of Montana (1954) and earned his M.S. in public administration from George Washington University, Washington, D.C. (1967). Carlson played linebacker and fullback for the 1950, ’51 and ’52 Grizzlies. He also played varsity baseball at UM and spent two years in the New York Yankees’ organization after college. He served two years in the Air Force. Carlson coached football at Great Falls High for 15 years, winning five class AA championships and posting a 108-32-8 record before coming to UM in February of 1974. Gene and his wife Kathy have five children, Jeff, Bruce, Wendie, Kim and Stephanie.

Pat Dolan begins his third year on the UM football staff and coaches the linebackers again this season. He will also work with the wide receivers. He is a 1966 graduate of Great Falls Central High School in Montana and attended UM where he earned a B.S. in health and physical education in 1973. Dolan played in the Grizzly secondary during unbeaten seasons in 1969 and 1970. He served as defensive coordinator at Libby High School in Libby, Montana from 1973-75 before accepting the UM appointment. He and his wife Shelly have two children, Nathen and Heather.
Ernest “Pokey” Allen joined the UM staff in December of 1976. He is defensive coordinator and works with the defensive backs. Allen graduated from Missoula County High School in 1961, after starring in football and basketball at MCHS. He was a three-year starter in football at the University of Utah and earned a bachelor of science degree in 1965. He was an honorable mention All-American, a team captain and most valuable player in the Liberty Bowl in 1965. Allen played in the Canadian Football League for three years before becoming an assistant coach at Simon Fraser University in 1968. He was named co-head coach in 1972 and retained that position until coming back to Montana.

Dave Nickel became a member of the Grizzly football staff in December of 1976. He is offensive coordinator and coaches the offensive line. He is also in charge of overseeing academic performance on the UM team. Nickel is a 1965 graduate of Utah State where he lettered in football and served as a graduate assistant. He was head football coach for two years at Westminster College in Salt Lake City, Utah and joined the Boise State staff as an assistant in 1968. He remained at Boise State for eight years and played a key role in their conference championship seasons of 1973-74-75. Nickel and his wife Linda have two sons, Eric and Patrick.
Gary Ekegren joined the football staff as defensive line coach in December of 1976. He is a native of Harlem, Montana, graduated from Harlem High School and received his bachelor’s degree from UM in 1963. He earned a master’s degree in health, physical education and recreation from Montana in 1974. Ekegren was head football coach at Harlem High School for six years having previously coached football, basketball and track at Havre Junior High School. He served as first assistant at Missoula Sentinel High School from 1972-73 and became head coach at Sentinel in 1974. Ekegren and his wife Karen have three children, Travis, Shane and Ashley.

Athletic Personnel Sharon joined the University of Montana staff in September of 1973 as women’s gymnastics coach. She became acting women’s athletic d ir e c to r in 1974 w hile she continued to coach her highly successful gymnastic team. With the consolidation of the men’s and women’s intercollegiate programs, her new title is associate athletic director, and she continues her responsibilities to gym nastics. Sharon has both an undergraduate and graduate degree from South Dakota State University.
Marshall’s job at UM is two-fold. He serves as assistant athletic director in charge of business affairs as well as head track coach for the men. This is his first year at Montana, coming from Stanford where he was head cross country coach and assistant track coach for men for the past ten years. He is a 1957 graduate of USC where he lettered in both track and cross country. He earned a master’s degree from USC in 1958. He is considered one of the nation’s outstanding distance coaches.

Beginning his first year as UM’s faculty representative, Ray has been a professor of pharmacy administration in UM’s School of Pharmacy since 1966. He received a B.S. in pharmacy from Idaho State in 1951. He earned an M.B.A. in marketing from the University of Wisconsin in 1960 and earned a Ph.D. there in pharmacy administration in 1962. A native of Idaho Falls, he is affiliated with several professional organizations. He determines academic eligibility for UM athletes.
This is Chuck’s second year as UM equipment manager, following 30 years of service to Powell County High School in Deer Lodge, Montana. Most recently he was head track coach there, but he also served as football and basketball coach, head of the physical education department and business instructor. He is a 1947 graduate of UM with a B.A. in health, physical education. He earned a master’s degree in education in 1965. He is a member of the UM Basketball Hall of Fame.

Naseby is the only athletic trainer Montana has known. A month after his graduation from UM in 1935, he was appointed Montana’s first athletic trainer. He was a standout athlete while attending high school in Milwaukee and became one of Montana’s finest allaround athletes earning nine varsity letters in football, basketball and track. He has received many honors and accolades during his 44 years at Montana, including the Grizzly Cup, which he won in 1935 and his son Pete won in 1958.
Gary has been ticket manager at UM since 1966. Last year he was also appointed fieldhouse manager. He schedules all events in Adams Fieldhouse and at Dornblaser Stadium in addition to handling ticket distribution. He is a native of Ronan, Montana and graduated in accounting from the Missoula Business College in 1962. He gained extensive experience in accounting and auditing before assuming his responsibilities at Montana.

Grizzlies Add Shotgun to Offensive Artillery Several outstanding performers return to the University of Montana this fall to put the offensive machinery in motion. That machinery includes the addition of the shotgun formation and more concentration on the passing game. According to UM Head Football Coach Gene Carlson, the offense will be split equally between rushing and passing plays. That will give the Grizzles more pass offense than ever before. Also, the shotgun formation, an extension of the passing game made popular by the Dallas Cowboys, will be used in certain situations according to Carlson. “In a definite passing situation, we’ll probably use the shotgun,” Carlson said. “Also, if we’re playing ‘catch-up’ football, we might go to the shotgun. It also comes in handy when running the two-minute offense at the end of the half or the game,” he added. Carlson enjoys good deapth at quarterback this season with four
capable signal callers. Senior Tim Kerr (5-10, 175) and sophomore Rocky Klever (6-3,210) will battle for the starting spot this fall. Kerr sat out from spring football while recovering from knee surgery. The Missoula native had a strong finish last year and completed the season with 1,097 yards passing and connected on 51.3% of his passes. Klever adds another dimension to the Grizzly attack as he is a proven ground gainer. Last year he averaged four yards a carry. Junior Bob Boyes had an excellent spring and provides proven back-up help. Dennis Fechter has junior college experience and will also serve in a back-up role. The Grizzly rushing game is led by senior Monty Bullerdick, a first team All-Big Sky pick in 1977 and an Associated Press honorable mention All-American. Bullerdick rushed for 1,022 yards in 10 games last season. Behind Bullerdick at tailback are sophomore Wayne Harper from Livingston, a hard-running converted fullback and freshman Bob Cerkovnik from Great Falls. Grant Kleckner, a senior from Great Falls, returns to his starting spot at fullback. Kleckner averaged over five yards a carry last season. Junior Doug Egbert moves from tailback to fullback and walk-on Richardson Moe from Poplar rounds out the contingent of running backs. The Grizzlies will run two wide receivers this season, eliminating the flanker. Jim Hard, the nation’s leading junior college receiver with 70 catches in 10 games last season, had an excellent spring at UM and is the top candidate on the right side of the line. Junior Pat Sullivan from Butte, sophomore Bill Lane, redshirt freshmen Bill Dolan and possibly junior Ed Cerkovnik, who may be moved from the defensive secondary to wide receiver, all have opportunities to win a starting spot. Marcus Fisher, a junior college recruit, will join the Grizzlies this fall and could find a home at wide receiver, or in either the offensive or defensive backfield. Junior tight end Allen Green (6-2,230) returns to his position as a proven pass receiver and blocker. The Anaconda native caught 22 passes, 6 for touchdowns last season. He is a strong contender for post-season honors. Success in moving the ball, of course, is dependent on a good offensive line. Montana’s offensive front has come along very well, according to Carlson. Under the guidance of line coach and offensive coordinator, Dave Nickel, the front five has come together quickly. Junior Guy Bingham (6-2, 235) has been moved from guard and will do all the certering this season. According to Nickel, Bingham has great potential. “He’s the best one-on-one blocker we have. He’s bigger, stronger, quicker and smarter than last season. I think he’ll be the best allaround center in the Big Sky Conference,” Nickel said. Bingham will be a candidate for post-season honors. Senior Tim Hook (6-2, 235), a starter at the end of the 1977 season, returns to left guard. Junior college recruit John Price (6-1, 230) joins Hook on the left side at tackle. Junior college recruits Mark Eickelmann (6-1,225) and Jim Duff (6-1,248) will hold down the guard and tackle spots on the right side. Junior Mike Bryant (6-3, 250), sophomores Basil Jones (6-2, 205), Brian McHugh (6-5, 230), Keith Albright (6-1,225), and a group of five freshmen will all be fighting for sports. University of Montana all-time leading scorer, Bruce Carlson, has graduated, leaving the kicking chores to a few individuals. Tight end Allen Green punted 11 times last season for a 36.5 yard average per punt. He will probably inherit full-time punting duties. Sophomore Terry Thomas from Great Falls transferred from Portland State and redshirted last year. He could take over the place kicking responsibilities. He will also be a back-up punter. Freshman John Kovacich from Butte will be given an opportunity to display his punting skills this fall. Raul Allegre, a soccer-style place kicker from Mexico is also a candidate on placements.
Grizzlies Feature New Defensive Look “Defensively, we’ll be a lot stronger at every position. Our goal is to be the top defensive team in the Big Sky Conference.” University of Montana defensive coordinator Pokey Allen isn’t setting unattainable goals with that statement. Last season Montana finished second to Northern Arizona in team defense and only two seniors are gone from the group. Although the Grizzly defense is still relatively young, it has more experience and it features a new look. For years, Montana has employed a 5-2 defense, but has now switched to a Pro 4-3. That alignment features four down linemen, two tackles and two ends and three linebackers: two outside and one insde. The defense is anchored by 1977 first team Academic AllAmerican and second team All-Big Sky selection, senior Steve Fisher. Fisher (6-4,235), a native of Missoula, has been moved from defensive end to tackle. Fisher is a strong candidate for All-America honors. He’ll be joined by sophomore Bret Barrick (6-5, 220) at tackle. The Lewiston product has improved tremendously in a year. Three players are competing for the two defensive end positions. Junior Sam Martin (6-4, 220) heads the list of players. Martin led the team in tackles last season with 89. Junior college transfer Marty Andrews (6-3, 235) and sophomore Brad Woodford (6-1,210) are the other candidates. Ekegren will also have three freshmen linemen from Montana. “We asked our players to drop weight and add strength through our winter weight program and spring football,” Ekegren said. “With lighter, quicker people, we should be able to get to the football and make the play.” And that’s what it’s all about for Gary Ekegren’s interior line. The objective is no different for the linebackers: Get to the football. The Grizzlies have several people displaying that ability. Junior Kent Clausen (6-5, 230) is bigger, stronger, quicker and more experienced than last season. According to linebacker coach Pat Dolan, Clausen can play inside or outside linebacker. One thing is certain, he’ll play. Clausen is an “A” student and a candidate for post season honors. Dave Gleason (6-3,206) earned second team All-Big Sky honors last season. The junior from Missoula faces stiff competition at middle linebacker from senior Carm Carteri (6-2, 215), a starter much of 1977. In addition to Clausen, there are four other strong candidates at outside linebacker led by second team All-Big Sky choice last season, senior Scott Morton (6-0, 200). Juniors Barry Sacks (5-11, 175) and Jim Hogan (6-0, 200), and sophomore Mike Sloan (5-11,200) had excellent springs and comprise a formidable group. According to Dolan, “This is the best group of outside linebackers we’ve ever had. Any of the five can start.” One freshman linebacker, Mike Carroll from Seattle, will join the Grizzlies in the fall. Pokey Allen’s secondary returns nearly intact from last season, losing just one player, Jeff Carlson, to graduation. “The defensive secondary could be one of the strongest aspects of our team this season,” Allen said. The player roster bears that out. Junior Kelly Johnson (6-1, 190) from Great Falls returns to his spot at free safety. Johnson led the team in interceptions last season with six and was one of the leading tacklers for the Grizzles. Mike Johnson (6-2, 190) is the only senior in the secondary and appears to have the inside track on the strong safety spot. Johnson (no relation to Kelly), suffered from injuries last fall and didn’t see much playing time. However, he has come back very well and enjoyed an excellent spring. Three juniors will hold down the two cornerback spots. Greg Dunn (5-11, 179) has started at cornerback since his freshman year at Montana and continues to show improvement. According to Allen, Dunn is one of the top cornerbacks in the Big Sky.
He’s also an accomplished kickoff and punt return man. He was ninth in the nation in kickoff returns, averaging 25.4 yards per return in 1977. Dunn is also an excellent student. Scot Ferda (5-10, 165) and Ed Cerkovnik (5-9, 160), both of Great Falls, have shown great improvement. Either could start and they could be used in the same secondary. Both played a great deal in 1977. Ferda is the fastest man on the club and appears headed for a good year. Cerkonvik, also extremely quick, intercepted four passes against Portland State last year. He could, however, be moved to wide receiver. He’s also an excellent student. Another candidate in the secondary this fall is Jay Becker, a walkon player last season who earned a full grant-in-aid for 1978. He can play cornerback or free safety. John Menke, a junior, walked on this past spring and showed great improvement. He’ll be used at strong safety. Freshmen, John Kovacich and Reed Madison from Butte, will be given an opportunity to crack the secondary. “I think we’re a lot stronger at every position,” Allen said about the defense. “We’ve improved our pass rush, and I think we’ll be very tough this season.”

He attended Bethel High School where he competed in football, wrestling and track. He spent most of his spring practice adjusting to the Grizzly system, but his size, speed and quickness make Marty a definite asset to the defensive line. He is a probable starter this fall. Moved from guard to center this season, Guy has adjusted quickly to the position and looks like he has always played there. He is a total center, snapping for punts, field goals and PATs. He rushed for 1,022 yards last season for an aver age of 102.2 yards a game. He ranked second in the Big Sky and 13th in the nation in rushing. Ed has great quickness and utilized his outstanding leaping ability last season to intercept four passes against Portland State, a single game record at UM. While seeing quite a bit of playing time last season at cornerback, Ed may also see some time at wide receiver this season. He was a walk-on candidate last year but earned himself a full-grant-in-aid. He is an excellent student at UM with a 3.86 GPA, the highest grade point average on the team this year. Greg averaged 25.4 yards per kickoff return last season and led the Big Sky in that category. His average was also ninth best in the nation. Last season he was one of the leading tacklers for UM, earned second team all-Big Sky honors and first team Aca demic All-America honors. He carries a 3.77 average in economics. Dave was one of the top tacklers for Montana’s defense last season as a sophomore. He started quite a bit at middle linebacker and will be battling for a starting spot this fall. He was named Big Sky defensive player-of-the week early last fall and earned second team all-Big Sky honors at the end of the 1977 campaign. Allen will be one of the best, if not the best, tight end in the Big Sky this season. He’s an excellent blocker and a proven pass receiver (22 catches, 6 for touchdowns last season). He displayed his breakaway speed last season when he scampered 61-yards on a touchdown catch against Idaho. He earned honorable mention all-America, first team allstate and all-conference. Jim also lettered in basketball and baseball at Napa High School where he was coached by Keith Orr. Wayne is coming off a redshirt season at UM. He was forced to sit out last year because of injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident. He is fully recovered now and had a good spring. He has been switched from fullback to tailback and appears very comfortable at his new position. He continues to make progress as a runner and blocker. Tim had an outstanding season in 1977, earning the starting quarterback job after walking-on. Last winter he underwent knee surgery and did not compete in spring foot ball. He is now fully recovered. He passed for 1,097 yards and completed 51.3% of his passes in 1977. He holds several single game passing records, all set against Montana State last season including 291 yards passing in that game. John was captaion of the state champion Butte High School football team last season. He earned letters in football, basketball and track at Butte High where his football coach was Jon McElroy. John was named first team all-state and all-conference defensive back last season and was a second team all-state punter. He’ll have an opportunity at both positions with the Grizzlies. Big Sky Conference The Big Sky Conference was formed in February, 1963, when the presidents and athletic directors of six Rocky Mountain universities met in Spokane. The original conference members were Gonzaga, Idaho, Idaho State, Montana, Montana State and Weber. Gonzaga entered the conference as a non-football playing school. The conference derived its name from a pair of Montanans and a Washington sports editor. A. B. Guthrie, Great Falls, Montana, wrote a novel entitled “The Big Sky” and Jack Hallo well, former Montana State Advertising director, promoted the Big Sky theme as a nickname for the state. Harry Missildine, Spokesman-Review sports editor, picked up the name and in a sports column promoted the name Big Sky as the name of the conference. On February 25, 1963, the conference adopted the name—Big Sky Athletic Conference. In 1970 the conference expanded to include Northern Arizona University, Flagstaff, Ariz., and Boise State College, Boise, Idaho. Both entered as football playing schools. Nevada-Reno will become the newest member of the Big Sky beginning July 1, 1979. They will compete with a full athletic program. Jack Friel became the first commissioner in 1963, and the offices were established in Pullman, Wash., Friel’s home. Following Friel’s retirement in July, 1971, the offices were moved to Boise, Idaho, and John Roning was named commissioner. Steve Belko was named commissioner and assumed duties July 1, 1977, following Roning’s retirement.

Grizzly Cup Initiated in 1921, the Grizzly Cup is the University of Montana’s oldest athletic award. Dr. W. E. Schreiber, a long time head of the UM physical education department, began the award which is given to the athlete who best represents the University on and off the playing field. Marsha Hamilton, gymnastic All-American, national track competitor and the 1977-78 recipient, is the first woman to ever receive this award. Grizzly Awards Each year five outstanding University of Montana football players are recipients of awards. The Terry Dillon Award, honoring the outstanding back, was established in 1964 following the accidental death of former Grizzly Terry Dillon. Dillon played defensive and offensive halfback for UM from 1960 to 1962. He started at defensive halfback for the National Football League Minnesota Vikings. The Paul Weskamp Award was established in memory of Paul Weskamp, a tackle on Ed Chinske’s 1954 Grizzlies. The award honors UM’s outstanding lineman and was established by the citizens of Ronan, Montana. The Golden Helmet Award honors the hardest hitter on the team. It was set up on a nationwide basis by the Coca-Cola Company in 1967. The Larry Miller Award is given in memory of the great Grizzly lineman and wrestler who competed for UM in 1969 and 1970. Miller died in an automobile accident in 1974. The award honors the team’s outstanding defensive lineman. The Steve Carlson award is given to the team’s most valuable player in memory of the former Grizzly football player who died in 1977. Ron Lebsock is the first recipient of this award. Voice of the Grizzlies “Grizzly” Bill Schwanke is the voice of the Montana Grizzlies on KYLT radio, UM’s official station for Grizzly athletics. Beginning his eighth year broadcasting Grizzly football and basketball games, Schwanke is the only sports director KYLT has had since being awarded broadcast rights for UM athletics in 1971. Schwanke is a former sports editor for The Missoulian newspaper and a former UM sports information director. He is a 1967 graduate of UM. He has been awarded Montana's sports broadcaster of the year award twice and given the 1977 Ed Chinske Award honoring Missoula’s outstanding sports professional.
