University of Montana, Missoula The University of M ontana at M issoula is located in a m ountain forest setting in Western Montana. Camping, backpacking, river floating, hunting, fishing and skiing are popular outdoor activities. Four wilderness areas are located nearby Missoula, and Glacier and Yellowstone National Parks are w ithin a short driving distance. The University m aintains a Campus Recreation Service to promote recreation. Travel in the area is facilitated by major airline service, the A m trak railw ay system and a major east-w est freeway. The U niversity of Montana w as chartered February 17, 1893, and opened in September, 1895, with fifty students enrolling the first day. Throughout it-s history, the U niversity has sustained a high sta n da rd of academic excellence in teaching, research and service. Today the campus has an enrollment of 8,425, approximately 450 fulltime state-supported faculty positions and more than 38,000 alumni. The U niversity of M ontana is one of six units in the M ontana University System and has been designated the sta te ’s most comprehensive institution of higher learning.

Athletic Director Harley Lewis H a r le y W. L ew is w a s n a m e d a th letic d ir e c to r at the U n i v e r s i ty of M o n ta n a , effective A p r il 14,1976. He h a d se r v e d as acting athletic direc to r from July 1, 1975. Lew is also se rv es as the U n i v e r s i t y ’s t r a c k a n d field coach. A 1964 g r a d u a t e of U M w i t h an M.S. in health, p h y s i c a l e d u c a tio n a n d r ecreation , Lew is beca m e t r a c k a n d c r o s s - c o u n tr y coach at the U n i v e r s i ty in 1966. P rio r to a s s u m i n g coaching r e s p o n s ib ilitie s at UM , the 1959 g r a d u a t e of Butte High School c oached tw o y e a rs at the U n i v e r s i ty of Po rtlan d . Gene Carlson Head Offensive

Coach

Gene Carlson, interim head football coach last season, w as named head coach of the M ontana Grizzlies, December 13, 1976. Carlson, an assistant coach and executive secretary of the M ontana Century Club for two years, stepped into the head coaching position following Jack S w arth o u t’s resignation June 14, 1976 after nine years at UM. A national search for a perm anent head football coach w as begun following the 1976 football season because a search could not be completed before the beginning of football practice in mid-August. Carlson, 45, is a native of Great Falls and a 1949 graduate of Great Falls High. He has a health and physical education degree from the U niversity of M ontana (1954) and earned his M.S. in public adm inistration from George W ashington University, Washington, D.C. (1967). Carlson played linebacker and fullback for the 1950, ’51 and ’52 Grizzlies. He also played varsity baseball at UM and spent two years in the New York Yankee’s organization after college. He served two years in the Air Force. Carlson coached football at Great Falls High for 15 years, winning five class AA championships and posting a 108-32-8 record before coming to UM in February of 1974. Gene and his wife Kathy have five children, Jeff, Bruce, Wendie, Kim and Stephanie. Jeff and Bruce are competing in their final season on UM ’s football team. Jeff is a strong safety. Bruce is a defensive end and has been starting place kicker and punter for four years. 4

Dave N ickel beca m e a m e m b e r of the G rizzly footb all sta ff in D e ce m ber of 1976. He is offensive c o o r d in a to r a n d coaches the offensive line. He is also in ch arg e of o verseeing a ca d em ic p e rfo r m a n c e on the U M team . N ickel is a 1965 g r a d u a t e of U t a h S t a te w h e r e he l e tte re d in footb all a n d se rv e d as a g r a d u a t e a s s i s t a n t. He w a s h e a d football coach for tw o y e a r s at W e s tm i n s t e r College in Salt Lake City, U t a h a n d join ed the Boise S t a te s ta f f as an a s s i s t a n t in 1968. He r e m a in e d at Boise S ta te for eight y e a r s a n d p la y e d a ke y role in th e ir conference c h a m p i o n s h i p se a so n s of 1973-74-75. N ickel a n d his wife Linda h a v e tw o sons, Eric a n d P a tric k .

Grizzly Basketball Outlook All-America candidate Michael Ray Richardson leads the Grizzly hoopsters this season. The senior averaged 19.2 points per game last season, has been named first team all-conference twice and is UM ’s fifth highest career scorer. Jim Brandenburg and Mike Montgomery return for their second season coaching the Griz.
