The Big Sky Conference T h e Big S k y Conference w a s formed in February, 1963, w h e n the presidents a n d athletic directors of six R o c k y Mou n t a i n universities m e t in Spokane. T h e original con ference m e m b e r s w ere Gonzaga, Idaho, Idaho State, M o n tana, M o n t a n a State and Weber. Gonzaga entered the conference as a non-football playing school. T h e conference derived its n a m e from a pair of M o n tanans an d a Washington sports editor. A. B. Guthrie, Great Falls, Montana, wrote a novel entitled “T h e Big S k y ” and Jack Hallo well, former M o n t a n a State A d v e r tising director, promoted the Big S k y theme as a nickname for the state. H a rry Missildine, S p o k e s m a n - R e v i e w sports editor, picked u p the n a m e and in a sports c o lumn pro m o t e d the n a m e Big S k y as the n a m e of the conference. O n February 25, 1963, the conference adopted the n a m e — Big S k y Athletic Conference. In 1970 the conference expanded to include Northern Arizona University, Flagstaff, Ariz., and Boise State Col lege, Boise, Idaho. Both entered as football playing schools. Jack Friel b e c a m e the first commissioner in 1963, and the offices w ere established in Pullman, Wash., Friers home. Following Friel’s retirement last July, the offices we r e m o v e d to Boise, Idaho, and John Roning w a s n a m e d commissioner.

The Commissioner Jo h n Roning w a s n a m e d Big S k y Commissioner to re place Jack Friel, w h o retired July 1, 1971. Friel w a s c o m missioner since the Big S k y Conference’s inception in 1963. Not only w a s there a change at the helm, but the league offices w e r e m o v e d to Boise and a conference sports in formation director, D a n Peters, appointed. Roning first entered the collegiate athletic picture at the University of Minnesota as an end for Bernie B i e r m a n ’s Golden Gophers from 1932-34. B i e r m a n also coached at M o n t a n a from 1919-21. Roning coached in Minnesota high school leagues before a three-year stint at Gustavus Adolphus College, St. Peter, Minn., before returning to Minnesota for gradu ate work.
