Camp Gold Rush Gallatin Valley YMCA WRITTEN BY CARSON JACOBS-FORSTER

Camp magic – a term

many of us have heard before and one that is used widely in the summer camp world, yet whose true meaning can be challenging to put into words. Perhaps it’s evident in those lasting memories that many of us still have if we were lucky enough to attend camp as children. The giggles erupting from cabinmates’ bunks after lights-out, the thrill of victory after winning the all-camp game and the contentment of sitting around a campfire on the final night with a community of strangersturned-friends are all still easy for us to draw upon. 20

february 2024

Or maybe camp magic consists of the things we experience for the first time at camp that build our self-confidence and shape our perspective. Such shifts in self-growth are rooted in finally hitting the bullseye in archery after trying all week, eating new foods and navigating social situations while making lifelong friends, or spending time away from home for the first time, and realizing that you actually can do it. How the tears of uncertainty on the first day became waterworks from not wanting to leave this newfound home in the woods on the last. If you were fortunate enough to be impacted by camp or an outdoor adventure as a child, there’s a good chance it was through a local YMCA program. The YMCA has been a staple of summer camps for over a century, after all. The Gallatin Valley Y, which has been established in the valley for 25 years, is building on that longstanding history of quality summer camp and youth programming by bringing Montana’s first-ever YMCA overnight summer camp to the Gallatin Valley to serve youth ages 8 to 14 from all backgrounds.

At our newly-formed Camp Gold Rush, we believe that camp magic, in its ever-elusive form, is encapsulated in both the memories we make and the growth that occurs during a camp session, and yet is so much more. The true beauty of that magic lies in the nitty-gritty work that the campers never see, the tricks up the proverbial sleeve of the magicians. Take, for instance, one of the classic camp activities listed earlier, the allcamp game. In order for a camper, let’s call him Camper Alex, to relish in those sweet moments of victory, much coordination has occurred behind the scenes. Before camp began, the camp director helped Alex’s caregivers secure a scholarship and register for camp, trained the sitecoordinators on large group facilitation, and made sure all staff understood the risk-management policies and plans. Then, Alex’s site coordinator sifted through the vital caregiver-provided camper information so that the counselors would know which campers could be given sunscreen or had asthma, while also creating and adjusting weekly camp and staff schedules to make sure all the campers and enough staff would be present. All of this allowed the folks in the trenches, Alex’s counselors, to make sure their group was well equipped for the intense slog of capture the flag, to ensure everyone had proper footwear, were well-

hydrated (and had gone to the bathroom ahead of time), and had alternative activities for those less competitively-inclined, ultimately resulting in the exaltation of the final flag being captured by Alex’s team. However, that extensive description only begins to tell part of the story. Camp magic is also contingent upon the culture that permeates the camp. At Camp Gold Rush, the culture is centered around the belief that camp should be a place where everyone can be their best and truest selves. A place where kids from all backgrounds, abilities, and identities can experience (even if they may not know all that goes into it) true camp magic. Camp Gold Rush, the first-ever YMCA overnight summer camp in the state of Montana, will welcome its inaugural group of campers in the Summer of 2024. Camp Gold Rush is a oneof-a-kind overnight camp that aims to combine traditional camp activities and experiences with programming that develops a passion for stewardship of our wild spaces. Your child will make memories and friendships that last a lifetime, gain confidence by stepping out of their comfort zone and forge a sense of belonging and place that only summer camp can provide. For more information about YMCA Camp Gold Rush and how to register, please visit Gallatinvalleyymca.org. Camp magic has never been more accessible. Carson Jacobs-Forster is the Overnight Camp Director at the Gallatin Valley YMCA.

Get ready for a summer of fun! Ridge Kids Summer Camp offers fitness and themed weeks so your children will always have something exciting to look forward to. WhAT You Need to Know BEFORE

SELECTING A SUMMER CAMP WRITTEN BY SARA SILVA

Summer camps fill up fast! The rush to ensure care for your young child during the summer months can put a lot of pressure on families. And in some areas, the sheer number of summer camp options can be overwhelming. Here are a few things to know before making your choice. The Basics:

Did you know that summer camps in Montana do not need to meet any child care licensing requirements? Summer camps are considered legally-operating, unlicensed child care and do not generally receive any oversight. This also means that they generally do not need to meet any specific health and safety requirements to be up and running. No need to be anxious, this just means that there is a bit more work on parents to ensure child safety during the summer months. Of course, there are exceptions, for example: If your child care center is licensed and runs a summer program, they are generally required to meet licensing rules year-round (including during their summer program).

Vetting Summer Camp Options: Foundationally, you want to ensure that the

22

february 2024

logistics of the summer camps you are considering meet your family’s needs. Stepping beyond this foundation, it is important to consider a few additional pointers to ensure a healthy and safe summer.

Ç Get camp referrals from trusted family

friends: Do you know someone who has had a positive experience with the camp(s) you are considering? The recommendation of family friends can go a long way to ensuring that the camp is a good fit for your family.

Ç Ask the camp about staff experience and

training: Are staff required to engage in basic health and safety training (such as first aid and CPR certification)? Is staff consistent throughout the length of the summer camp? What is the staff’s general level of experience meeting the needs of young children? How many staff members will be available to the children at all times?

Ç Prioritize safety: Does the camp have a

comprehensive emergency plan? Is there a back-up plan for inclement weather? How is sunscreen handled? Bugs? What is the plan for keeping kiddos with allergies or medical needs healthy and safe? What is your access to a staff member if you need to check in on how your child is doing? What about if your child is struggling? What is the camp policy about reaching out to parents if their kid is having a hard time transitioning into the camp routines?

Better Together:

Consider your child’s interests when selecting a summer camp. If age appropriate, work together with your kiddo to pick out the camp that they would like to attend. Consider whether your child will know others attending the camp with them. Prepare your child(ren) to have a summer of fun by talking often and frequently about when the summer camp will begin, what they can expect during their camp experience and how much fun they are going to have. If your child has a difficult time with new experiences and transitions, see if you can visit the camp location and meet staff members before the first day. It can also be helpful to develop a consistent good-bye routine, and it doesn’t hurt to have a family photo or item belonging to a parent to keep close during those first few days of summer camp.

Trust Your Gut:

Although summer camps are not required to be licensed with Montana’s Department of Health and Human Services, if you are concerned about the health and safety of children at a particular camp call Child Care Licensing (406-4442012) or Montana’s Centralized Intake (1-866820-5437) to file a report. Sara Silva, is a Coach at Child Care Connections, where their work at is all about quality child care. SUMMER 2024

Recreational Therapy with HEART AND HAND CENTER WRITTEN BY SALLY JO HAND

“Just 10 more minutes! Just let me finish this game!”

Urgent pleas from children often bombard parents for more screen time as the lure of well-crafted video games and online programs capture their attention. Video gaming often diminishes interest in reading, conversation and the outdoor recreation that once kept kids engaged in physical activities that stimulate mind and body in healthy balance. Today, many children are engrossed in whatever is happening on their iPad, tablet or phone instead of observing what’s going on around them or engaging in conversation. Where parents and children used to talk about their day and shared life experiences together on the drive to school or during family meals, such opportunities have been replaced with screen time. The effect of this video game and screen time craze is showing up in children in many harmful ways, including shortened attention span, loss of interest in reading books, increased irritability, depression, anxiety, weight gain, eye problems, sleep disturbance and decreased social and conversational skills. Images on video screens change rapidly, programming the child’s brain to become bored with activities requiring sustained concentration and focus, such as schoolwork, chores, reading or conversation. When a child is engrossed in highly intense action video games, the limbic system is responding as if the one playing is actually the character in the chase or fight. The child’s limbic system responds to the game’s stimulation by flooding the child with adrenalin, increasing their heart rate and plunging the child into a hyper-arousal state of fight or flight. 26

february 2024

This flood of adrenalin gears up the entire mind and body to prepare for intense physical action. But the only muscles that actually expend energy and dispel that adrenalin are the little thumbs working like crazy to win and avoid fantasized death or danger. The body has amped the child up for vigorous large muscle activity but only little thumbs frantically pushing the game controller are actually doing any work. This creates tension and results in a buildup of frustration that increases irritability, anxiety, depression, anger outbursts and sleep disturbance. The child’s temper flares up more quickly than it otherwise would and interaction with siblings and parents is often more conflictual than thoughtful, calm and caring. As summer approaches and school hours aren’t occupying our children’s time and attention, many parents face increased conflict and arguments over screen time. Often parents take the easy way out and give in, avoiding immediate conflict while unwittingly creating lasting problems and harmful habits that will only grow larger if not curtailed. Heart and Hand Center Summer Camps offer an ideal solution to this problem, offering three weeks of summer day camps at their mountaintop ranch this summer. At the ranch kids engage in healthy, structured outdoor activities that provide balanced stimulation for their minds, emotions and growing bodies. Kids experience expansive views in nature, playing and learning outside, as their brains are producing natural chemicals that reduce anxiety and depression while increasing joy, peaceful feelings and connectivity to others. Whether learning horsemanship skills, expressing themselves with art and music or

sharing together in small groups, kids will grow and develop positive self-esteem and identity at Heart and Hand Center Summer Camps, while learning essential character building skills. Carefully planned and structured camp programming provides kids with activities designed to increase focus and communication skills while reducing depression, anxiety, anger and reactivity. Day Camps offer safe spaces where campers talk with one another and staff throughout the day and enjoy a balanced combination of quiet time and interactive time with each other, the Heart and Hand Center horses, therapy dogs and kitties. Campers will hike to high places at the ranch where they breathe deeply the fresh clean air and expand their minds with views of the distant aweinspiring Montana mountain ranges. Horse time is always a favorite and is tailor made to help your child understand him or herself better while learning to improve communication and relationship skills. As kids master leadership in the horse/human relationship, they find new dimensions of their own inner strength, confidence and power. Far away from the lure of screen time and video games, kids play with horses, express feelings with art and crafts, enjoy invigorating hikes, make bead and leather crafts in the tipi, roast marshmallows, paint and eat lunch beneath the pines, relax in hammocks and go on imaginary journeys with child-centered guided meditations. At the end of every day, we hear, “Really, is it already time to go? That went so fast!!!” So, join the Heart and Hand Center and make this summer the best for the rest of your child’s life! BOZEMAN

the LANDON HULL

MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Now Open

EVERY SATURDAY* 9AM TO 12:00PM

The Landon Hull Memorial Scholarship opened January 1, 2024 and has funds to support students seeking a degree in psychology or counseling or enrolled in the WWAMI Medical Education program studying medicine with the intent to practice psychiatry. The annual award amount is $4,500 and is intended for undergraduate college students in their junior or senior year, or those pursuing graduate or medical degrees. 2024 marks the first year for this scholarship. A Bozeman native, Landon Hull was studying Psychology as a freshman at Montana State University when he died by suicide on November 6, 2022 — just five days past his 18th birthday. Suicide is the leading cause of death among young adults between 15 and 24. The CDC notes that suicide is the seventh leading cause of death in Montana, and data suggests Montana has the highest suicide rate among all states, with a rate of 28.77 deaths per 100,000 residents. Despite these alarming statistics, the expansion of mental health resources remains stagnant. “Most people who knew Landon had no idea how much he struggled. They only knew the humorous, energetic, creative side of him,” noted Landon’s mother, Kimmelin Hull. “His family saw his struggle to be at peace with himself and to manage the extreme mood swings that came with bipolar disorder. In the end, Montana simply lacked the breadth and depth of resources Landon needed.” Following Landon’s death and reflecting on their experience, the Hull family decided to be part of the solution. “Through this scholarship, we want to help bridge the persistent gap between Montana’s mental healthcare needs and the number of professionals providing that care,” Kimmelin said. The intent of the scholarship is to generate more mental health professionals in Montana providing counseling, therapy or psychiatric care, expanding access for Montanans. The scholarship commemorates Landon’s desire to be a counselor, and his ambition to help others in crisis. To learn more or to apply for the Landon Hull Memorial Scholarship, please visit https://mtcf.org/scholarship/landon-hull-memorial-scholarship. Individuals may also contact the Montana Community Foundation at (406) 443-8313 or scholarship@mtcf.org. To learn more about Landon’s story, please visit youtu.be/ WPDxVnt70tk?si=ha1jmqlqcQa9-55v

Farmers Market

What began 10 years ago as a small group of bozemanwinterfarmersmarket.com farmers huddled together outside selling their winter veggies is now a successful, thriving market with a bounty of local vegetables and farm products. The Bozeman community’s demand for a direct producer-to-consumer experience has grown, and so has the Bozeman Winter Farmers Market. You will find a lot more than traditional winter staples like potatoes and onions. Area farmers have worked hard to drastically increase the amount of fresh greens and the variety of vegetables they can offer. The market is held from 9 a.m. to noon at the Gallatin County Fairgrounds in Exhibit Building 4.

Classical music fans are invited to watch Music Director Norman Huynh’s interpretation of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3 in E flat major, “Eroica.” Conveying both turmoil and triumph, this piece is known as a crucial turning point for both Beethoven and symphonic composition, which was pivotal in the transition from the Classical period to the Romantic period. The one-two punch of "Eroica’s" opening chords is followed by the solemn, majestic Marcia Funebre (funeral march). The buoyant Scherzo departs from the intensity of the previous two movements, and the final movement uses music from Beethoven’s own Overture to the ballet, The Creatures of Prometheus. Renowned pianist Rodolfo Leone returns to Bozeman to perform Maurice Ravel’s “lighthearted and brilliant” Piano Concerto in G major. Described as a true sound philosopher, the Italian-born pianist is a top prize winner of several major piano competitions. He made his orchestral debut in 2013 and has performed extensively with numerous orchestras throughout Europe, North America and China. Leone is currently based in Los Angeles where he earned both a Master of Music degree and an Artist Diploma at the Colburn Conservatory of Music. Performances are Saturday, February 24, at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, February 25, at 2:30 p.m., at the Willson Auditorium. Individual tickets are available at www.bozemansymphony.org/normanconductsbeethoven or by phone at 406-585-9774. Tickets at the door are based on availability. Keeping It Real

WRITTEN BY BLAIR FJESETH

This Valentine’s Day, I’ve penned a letter to all the moms who pick up where the rest of us may fall short from time to time. I consider myself a good mom, but there are times when my career has to take center stage, as is the case for most, if not all, of us. Life has its ebbs and flows, and work/life balance seems to be a myth rather than a goal. It’s during these times that I notice and appreciate the moms who have more bandwidth and are willing to step up without being asked and, more importantly, without judgment. This is for the moms who find the time within their day to take on things like PTA, classroom volunteering and playdates, the ones always offering to drive a kid home from practice if they notice a parent is tardy for pickup. You know who you are, and this letter is for you. Happy Valentine’s Day to the unsung heroes, the pillars of strength and the heart of a beautiful parenting village, as I have deemed you: the teamminded moms. Your tireless efforts, unwavering support and love for other parents do not go unnoticed. Whether you do it intentionally or not, you embody what it means to create a nurturing, compassionate community for those navigating the beautiful yet challenging journey of parenthood. You understand that motherhood isn’t just about raising your own children but also about uplifting and empowering fellow moms around you. You effortlessly create a village—a tight-knit community where every mother feels seen, heard and supported. Your acts of kindness, whether big or small, help alleviate the burdens and struggles that come with raising children. From organizing playdates, leading the PTA and spearheading school/sport fundraising efforts to sharing invaluable advice and simply being there during tough times, your contributions create a safety net that allows others to thrive. You embrace the concept that it takes a village to raise a child, and you go above and beyond to ensure that this village is filled with empathy, understanding and camaraderie. Your willingness to extend a helping hand and your genuine desire to support other moms in their journey is a testament to the incredible strength and compassion within you. Acknowledging your impact is essential—as the positive ripple effect it creates spreads through our community, making it a better place to raise kids. Your selfless acts create a domino effect, inspiring others to pay it forward and create an endless chain of support and kindness. As you continue to be the backbone of this beautiful parenting village, I want to express my deepest gratitude. Your generosity, empathy and unwavering support make this world a better place for every parent and child fortunate enough to be a part of your circle. Happy Valentine’s Day from your not-secret admirers, other moms. Blair Fjeseth is a working professional and proud Montana mom. You can reach her at blairparker.inc@gmail.com. getting back at your child, or shaming them. These strategies often lead to rebellion or self-loathing, and that is certainly not our goal.

Getting angry, throwing out a consequence, and then seeing it has no effect on the child’s behavior can be a really frustrating cycle. The main issue often comes from perhaps using steps that are counterproductive (without even realizing it). Here are some common factors to help your consequences be more effective:

Let’s not threaten to take away their lovey snuggle bunny at bedtime or tell all their friends how bad they were at bedtime. Instead, we want the consequences to guide them toward better choices, with love and respect.

Wanting to impose big consequences to get the child to really care about their behavior can often backfire, defeating the purpose. Going bigger is not better. Have you found yourself saying: “If you don’t listen to me, you’re not going anywhere for a week.”

Unfortunately, these statements are likely not consequences you are really going to enforce, so then they just lead to the child thinking they don’t need to take you seriously.

“You will lose your birthday party if you keep this up!” “You’re not going play for the entire weekend if you don’t get over here.”

3. Explain Consequences in Advance

When you repeat what you want the child to do 10 times, and then yell out, “That’s it! All these toys are going in the garbage if you don’t clean them up!”…you are missing a key opportunity to motivate the child more effectively. After the first time you have asked them to do something, let your second reminder include the option of the consequence. For example, “I asked you to clean the toys up Josh. Let me be clear. I’m setting a timer for five minutes and any blocks still on the ground when the timer goes off, will be put on top of the fridge to take a break for two days.”

Transforming your approach to consequences for your child means thinking small, staying reasonable and connected, and communicating in advance whenever possible. By reorienting your approach to consequences, you can create a system that guides your child toward positive behavior without resorting to ineffective or emotionally damaging measures.
