DONATION TO MONTANA FOOD BANK NETWORK COMES AT CRITICAL TIME

WE NEED FOOD SECURITY B Y WA LT E R S C H W E I T Z E R

When I looked up “food security” this definition made the most sense to me. “Food security incorporates a measure of resilience to future disruption or unavailability of critical food supply due to various risk factors including droughts, shipping disruptions, fuel shortages, economic instability, and wars.” Covid19 has revealed that we do not have food security in the USA. It does not make sense that our local grocery stores are rationing dairy and meat products while family farms are being forced to dump milk and euthanize livestock. Our food supply chain is broken. How did we get to this surreal place in America history? Over 70 years ago American leaders started pursuing a cheap food policy. I listened to Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue brag in his speech at the National Farmers Union Convention that American farmers produce the cheapest food in the world. Montana Farmers Union and Farmers Union Enterprise donated 30,000 pounds of pork ribs to the Montana Food Bank Network in Missoula. The pork ribs are from Redwood Farms, one of the entities in the Farmers Union family of businesses owned by Farmers Union Enterprises. “COVID-19 has impacted all of us,” said Walter Schweitzer, President of Montana Farmers Union.“It has affected our livelihoods and our food systems.

Farmers Union is all about helping a neighbor in need. This donation came from your neighbors who are family farmers. They care about you and they want to feed you.” “The donation itself is really a perfect time for us,” said Gayle Carlson, CEO of the Montana Food Bank Network. C O N T I N U E D N E X T PA G E
