ABOUT ME I consider myself an architectural designer dreamer. For me, to be an architect represents the opportunity to materialize thoughts, desires and dreams. It is about creating spaces made to be, above all, the sceneries of life. Thus, what admires me the most about architecture is all the life that it can embrace. Through my bachelors degree and professional life, as my main goal, I tried to develop designs that represent and include people and wellbeing, always believing that a good design has the capability to cross boundaries and help to break society’s pre-stablished concepts. During my graduation course at Federal University of Juiz de Fora, I was able to explore different concepts and solutions, and I got contemplated with a scholarship to study at De Montfort University, in Leicester, UK, for a year, as part of a Government’s program called Science Without Borders. This experience reinforced my path as an architect and set a starting point for my final graduation design and thesis, in which I researched about the human side of architecture, embracing the psychology and sensory aspects of it. My view on green architecture as well as active spaces is that they are very much essential; therefore I took part in a research group on sustainable design at the university, and, since then, I have been studying this subject by myself. Throughout the three years I acted as an Architectural designer, I have worked autonomously, developing projects whose main focus was interior design in general and some architectural design; these projects are attached to the following pages of this portfolio. I also worked as a junior architect at Woo Architecture, in Goiânia, being responsible for all the steps of the design, from the client’s first contact whit the office until the executive plans. Also, I have worked as a construction manager for KF Architecture and have worked for the industry, being able to act temporarily in the nuclear power plants in Angra. Moreover, I have a great interest in graphic representation, as well as model making and photograph, and I enjoy doing some watercolor drawing in my free time. I love art! Overall, I am a passionate creative person who is determined and who wishes to make architectural spaces and the world better by adding feelings, sustainability, functionality and experience to it. Everything that I have been through led me to this passion about design and people, and I really hope I can add to the world by doing something that really matters to it. Architecture is living poetry, and it should respect life by all means, to bring healthier environments to a healthier world.

Final graduation project, year 2016/2. It is a proposal made from concepts previously researched on my final graduation assignment made in 2016/1, which studied the relations between psychology and senses in the architectural environment. The architectural object chosen to materialize this idea was a public cultural center, which was selected because of the range of possibilities it allow, furthermore, the cultural center is a place that gives a great comeback to the city in terms of leisure, culture and even work and studies, uses of which the city is in need. The overall intention was to create a public “oasis in the middle of an area that segregates the population, opening the space to everyone, inviting the experiment in the area. Additionally, the site consists in large urban emptiness that contains a great potential in itself that should be explore for the population. 6

06 LACET CULTURAL CENTER

The theme of a cultural center was choose because of the interaction between the population and the building that it can provide. Furthermore, it is a place where people can share experience, creating affective bonds with each other and the space. The public character of the building also helps with the appropriation feeling by the community, without exceptions, which helps the maintenance of the space thru the sense of belonging from the user, combined with the promotion of events and other use incentives, such as comfortable sits, interesting expositions and more. All of it comes together to create moments and memory. The intention, overall, was to integrate the architectural space to psychological and sensorial matters, previously researched in my final graduation assignment, instigating the experimentation of the elements of the space thru the senses, in particular the tactile experience. Moreover, the goal is to bring people’s attention to the whole body and mind contact with architecture, not only using the vision, subjects that are being more and more neglected in contemporary architecture.

The site is located on an intersection of neighborhoods with different realities, which makes the site itself a converging space that can promote the encounter of people with completely different life perspectives.

The concept of the design started by the insolation and shading analysis, which has great importance on the environmental comfort and on the maintenance of the book collection on the library. The image above shows the site’s physical model being analyze on the Heliodon equipment.

The Cultural center is compose by: An Exposition center with changeable collection, meant to be a place where local artists can expose their pieces; Three large squares: the first is an open and free square; the second one is a living space and the third one is also a living space that can be use like an observatory to the other ones when events are happening; A Library which has been chosen by the need of the city and A studio, where people can produce things they can’t do at home for lack of structure An open-air cinema made by projection on a wall, with a grandstand made from the Exposition center and studio’s access staircase, and a parking lot underground All the equipment where designed and distributed in a way that would improve the site’s use, creating spaces that are fluid to the pedestrian and could use the unevenness of the site in a clever way, conforming as many walkable spaces as possible.

The spatial configuration of the Cultural Center was develop from the natural passaging that pedestrians already do in the site. Thenceforward, two areas were create on the site, and then divided again to conform the wiling ambience, in a way that the site would be occupy without leaving isolated empty spaces and not to interrupt pedestrian’s passaging. In addition, the shape of the buildings was design with angles to provide the sight of the total of the space, without sharp walls that make a view barrier. Further, the conformation of the space was make to enhance the walking tactility, providing paths that people can explore.

Another key point of the cultural center’s design is the levels. They were use in order to emphasize the different behavior wanted in the specific space. Moreover, the level’s access ramps helps with this differentiation especially because they are placed in the exterior of the buildings, creating an inside-out dynamics. Furthermore, the passage to these ramps are made thru double flush doors, and they give a tactility by providing touch and weigh to the person that crosses it.

THE LIBRARY

Library entrance - view from the Exposition center’s roof

the Library The library is divide into four different spaces: Casual reading space (ground and mezzanine); Study area (2° and 3° floor); Open air reading (garden and balcony) and book shelter (underground). These areas were design in different levels to emphasize the different behaviors and environments desired in each space. The overall intention was to conform a range of distinct reading areas in order to encourage the population to practice reading, and the equipment and environment in those areas assist with their character. For example, talking is permit in the casual reading spaces, and a coffee was placed in the main area to bring the authentic smell to the space and to help with the casualty. Another thing that conforms the different aspects of the areas is the furniture, it is more comfortable and loose in the casual areas and more rigid in the study spaces. In the garden, an acoustic barrier was place to help bring a quietness feel to it, once there is a road that surrounds it.

The library has a central atrium with tubular sky lights that allow sun light in the space but makes a filter UV rays, maintaining the integrity of the books. The books are showcase in this atrium in an attractive way throughout the place, emerging the reader in a unique atmosphere. Furthermore, the angles of the library walls are explored to emphasize the whole legibility of the space and to create distinct heights, providing different sensations for the user.

Expositions Center Entrance View from the open square

The Expositions Center The expositions center is destined to young artists. Due to the proximity between the cultural center and the University, the center becomes a support to it, allowing students to use the space and expose their works for the population to see. The exposition Center has great external doors, which can be open to create an inside-out connection, allowing different interactions with the space and expositions. Moreover, the Exposition center’s entrance is located on a lower level than the street made by the appropriation of the site’s natural slope, providing a staircase that also contains a ramp for accessibility and a grandstand for people to seat and watch movie projections or small performances.

The interior of the exposition center is also divide according to the levels: The ground level works as a free exposition area, where the user can ramble and explore the space according to preference. Additionally, there is a closed space in this area with a high ceiling and a sky light in the center of the room, meaning to be a contemplative space; Next to it, the ramp to access the mezzanine is external and comprises a small exposition space as well; The ramp arrives at the mezzanine. It is a linear exposition space, where the spectator is walks on an exhibit that guides the person thru the shape of the area that gives no other path choice. On the upper floor, there is an open exposition space, where you can see the cultural center’s squares, and visually marks the changes in the exhibits for the pedestrians.

The Studio The studio is a creation space that people can use to realize any activity they need that the space admits. It works as a support area for both exposition center and the library, allowing events, classes and other practical activities to take place. The Studio’s entrance is connect by an atrium to the expositions center, which provides a link between the spaces thru the big openings that both of then presents. This entrance atrium also connects to the cultural center’s parking, which permits the usage of the three spaces together and allows a safe and comfortable passage for the pedestrians, bikers and others, helped by the vertical circulation made thru stairs and ramps that surrounds it. There are two separate spaces on the Studio’s interior, which can be use as stores, snack bars, as well as to be a workshop space. By the studio’s open area, the separations is made by mobile structures coated by cork, element that helps improving the acoustic of the space and provides a place to hang notices, leaflets, notes and others. Moreover, the ventilation and natural light of the space comes thru its big openings and thru cuts on the ceiling that arrives on the cultural center’s square, being part of the landscaping and furniture of the square, therefore allowing the view of the studio by the square. Additionally, these ceiling openings provides the existence of an internal garden on the studio.

Design developed during the schoolarship at DeMontfort University, in Leicester, England, which had the theme: “Dystopia and Robotic and had the site located in the Brick Lane area, in London. The main goal of this design was to create an architectural subject that would perform as antiutopia using technological means to achieve that. To achieve the desire objective, I chose to utilize a multimedia library as subject. As a first premise of the design, the building almost do not touch the ground, being held by cable-stayed structure that which supports itself utilizing the surrounding buildings. The intention was to create some confusion for the users and people passing by, making hard to understand the hole of the building by just looking at it, making the living of the space fundamental to it. The second point of the design was based on the site’s area, which is characterized by the brick buildings that conforms it. The form of the builds was exploded and distorted to mold the multimedia library. Thus, concepts coming from deconstructivism and surrealism was implemented in order to accomplish the desired goal. 30

The design is a symbolic space where people can have the opportunity to look at the area with a different perspective each time. The main goal is to make a critique on the area’s image, showing that what we see can be very distinctive of the true (if there is any true at all). The intention is to work with the image as a combination of elements that can form a wild range of realities. What is meant by that is that there are many different realities, and the image of one place is not just what you see. The project intends to take these images and distort them, with the propose to show that the real image does not really exist; it is a combination of elements that can change according to circumstances.

32

Portfolio

The concept of the project lays on the problematic of the image of the place. “Most often, our perception of the city is not sustained, but rather partial, fragmentary, mixed with other concerns. Nearly every sense is in operation, and the image is the composite of all of them.

monique cabral

33

The design is composed by six blocks that are disposed on the site, hanged by metal structures and cables, and only one of the blocks touches the ground to conform the entrance of the building. Each Block represents a distinct kind of distortion of the surrounding buildings. Beyond the fact that the building almost does not touches the ground, the composing blocks of it presents different levels from each other and come mezzanines hanging from the ceiling, which helps to create a confusing atmosphere even from the inside.

34

Portfolio

The entrance block represents the frames of a basic house shape that rolls over across the volume; the second block is a representation of a building peeling off; the third one is a translucent house shape; The fourth block is an exploded building, with walls and ceilings that are unconnected with each other; The fifth volume is a simple house shape made only by frames with simple finishing and a glass panel, that includes another house inside, with another house inside, conforming a house whiting another, withing another; The last block represents the same idea from the fifth one, but representing another perspective by being upside down.

Under the raised floor of the building, physical books are shown as antiques which conform the path to technology. On the block number six (the upside down one) the person walks in a glass structure above the apparent wood structure of the upside-down roof. The stairs presents continuity between itself and the furniture of the building.

The tower volume is basically shaped thru a combination of metal stripes that convey into a center. Some of the metal stripes can be used as stages or open-air areas for events. The intention was to create shapes that interact with the building in an inside-out manner, creating an ascending form at the same time, based on the local culture of art and the location of the site, but acting as something different and new. The central metal stripe is a vertical garden that can be seen from many different locations of the surrounding area, representing the green that lacks in the city.

The project area, known as brick lane, is a multicultural space with an artistic side pronounced which can be seen thru the street art on many different points of the area. The design concept is to integrate this art into itself, in a contemporary way. The tower is a sculpture which makes a mark in the space thru its hight, inviting people to come to the place, bringing life to it.

The metal “arms that are distributed on the space from the center of the tower can be used for many purposes, such as open-air events, stages, as well as rain shelter. The plant is open on the building’s interior to embrace many different uses of the space that it may need to.

PEACE PAVILION SEDHIOU / SENEGAL Reddish monoliths stand out from the dirt floor. They are primordial components of the sterile volumetry that reveals itself to those who observe it from the Access Square. Visitors will visually notice the access to the pavilion by horizontal and vertical recesses, finding soon afterwards a small cozy hall. Soon, they follow way through the artificial valley created by these walls. Exaggeratedly high and lack of roofing, they create the uncomfortable feeling of confinement as they are exposed to information about the modern conflicts that have ravaged this continent for the last century. These walls represent the soldiers of the past, who oppressed, but were also big victims of exploitation and colonialism. Photos and documents will be exposed in holes in these surfaces, which will never be intact. Scars on our deeds. They reach an open space created by the arched section of the parallel walls. A simple round arena carved in the floor creates space for internal reflection while exposed artistic interpretations of the events reported. The exhibition continues through the same tight corridors, recounting the horrors of war, as visitors climb the almost imperceptible ramp until they finally reach the apex of the exhibition, which contains nothing. A solemn high court, which allows a privileged view of the Casamance River. Offering a wide view, direct counterpoint to other visuals of the pavilion, always restricted by the heavy parallel walls. It’s represent the future. This space is intended for observation and reflection, together with nature and other visitors for reflection together. The sun rises on that façade. Continuing the path, we returned to the point of arrival, but different. A large tree makes the reception of who arrives and who leaves the pavilion, while children run in the Access Square. A new generation more conscious of its history, responsible for not repeating the atrocities of our recent past.
