TOGETHER WE THRIVE
2022 REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY

OUR MISSION
To ignite and nurture a passion for the performing arts in audiences and artists of today and tomorrow.

To ignite and nurture a passion for the performing arts in audiences and artists of today and tomorrow.
“We discovered our love for The Hanover Theatre in 2016. After that wonderful experience, we were eager to keep coming back! It is truly a gem. In 2021, The Hanover Theatre selected an Indian cast to play the Cratchit family in their 14th Annual Production of A Christmas Carol. That was a big deal for us. To see our community represented both on stage and in the audience at The Hanover Theatre is something we’re hoping to see more of in the years to come!”
Land is something sacred to all of us. Whether we consciously appreciate it or not, it is the space upon which we play, live, eat, find love and experience life. The land is ever-changing and ever-shifting, giving us and all other creatures and beings on the earth an infinite number of gifts and lessons. Today, we want to acknowledge the traditional, ancestral, unceded territory of the Nipmuc Nation on which we are working and currently performing in Worcester, MA. We recognize and respect Indigenous Peoples as traditional stewards of this land and the enduring relationship that exists between Indigenous Peoples and their traditional territories. This sort of acknowledgement is essential to human rights work across the world. It is essential to our work of honoring stories that explore the human experience. Dear Friends,
Our 2021-2022 season was an important one for us on many levels. We began the year with a new venture, The Hanover Theatre Repertory’s (THT Rep) outdoor production of Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar. Staged on the steps of Worcester’s City Hall, the project was both ambitious and rewarding. Despite significant challenges, we collaborated and partnered with our community and corporate supporters to engage with new audiences and thrive as an organization. The COVID-19 pandemic and shutdown forced us to discover and implement new strategies to stay connected with our supporters, and this production was a successful step in that direction.
In September 2021, following eighteen months of pandemic closure for actors and audiences alike, we reopened our mainstage to a sold-out show and standing ovation for local star Ricky Duran. In the weeks and months since, it’s become clear to us that while some audience members are eager to visit us again, others are slow to return. As you’ll see from the financial statements included in this report, however, we’ve not only survived the shutdown, but have found innovative ways to create new opportunities for improvement, strengthened engagement and inclusive expansion.
Our conservatory and education division celebrated five years and continued their growth. The Youth Acting Company and Youth Ballet Company performed multiple productions, including June’s fully produced presentation of Godspell in the BrickBox Theater at the Jean McDonough Arts Center (JMAC).
The coming year will be an important one as well. Our first full season of plays by THT Rep in the BrickBox Theater will delight and entertain new audiences with diverse offerings. We look forward to the completed renovation of the Francis R. Carroll Plaza with the outdoor Bank of America Stage on our doorstep so that we can offer even more opportunities for free programming to our community, our partners and our patrons. We look forward to celebrating these milestones and more in next year’s report to the community.
With gratitude for your ongoing support,
To be a dynamic downtown destination where all people can experience the transformative power of the performing arts.
THT successfully partnered with the City of Worcester and the Downtown Worcester Business Improvement District (WBID) to present THT Rep’s professional production of Julius Caesar as our collective gift to the community. The performances were free and open to the public, thanks to the extraordinary generosity of hundreds of donors including: presenting sponsors Assumption University and Bay State Savings Bank; supporting sponsors Lundgren Honda of Auburn and Winn Development; contributing sponsors Bartholomew & Company, Bowditch Attorneys, Country Bank, Fallon Health and Miles Press/American Printing; along with individual sponsors Mary C. DeFeudis, Marianne Felice, MD, Drs. Ivan & Noreen Green, Lisa & Neil McDonough, Donald & Susan Pegg, Grace & Jack Roche and Veronica & Howard Wiseman.
The show marked the third and most ambitious COVID-friendly project from the newly minted THT Rep, coming after The Edgar Allan Poe Double Header and A Christmas Carol: Reimagined the previous season. Toga-clad audiences filled the common night after night, confirming that professional straight plays have an eager audience here in the “Heart of the Commonwealth.”
The Wisemans followed Livy Scanlon’s career from Boston and Cambridge and then began to explore the wonders of Worcester. At a recent event, Veronica Wiseman spoke to a gathering of THT Rep supporters and shared, “There’s something about Worcester when you’re walking down the streets, coming to see something in a venue like this one, or even just going to a restaurant. There’s a feeling of possibility and potential and freshness. We just really got caught up in the newness and wonderfulness of being here within the first few minutes.
“When the pandemic hit, as we’ve heard, there was a stop of everything at that point in Worcester. And then one day, THT Rep’s Artistic Director, Livy Scanlon, called me on the phone. I was out on our deck, sort of in a depressed mood thinking, ‘Gee, what’s going to happen to the world and all of us?’ And then she said, ‘What if we . . .’ That phrase just caught my heart and it started to beat. ‘What if we . . . did an outdoor production on City Hall Plaza so people wouldn’t be afraid to come out because it would be outdoors? And we could reinvigorate the city and we could bring people together,
“We’re singing the praises of Worcester to anyone that we meet and we’re excited about THT Rep’s future.”
-Veronica Wiseman
Vital cities have vital downtowns, and vital downtowns have great professional theatre.
THT Rep makes professional theatre in Worcester, for Worcester. We entertain, engage and energize audiences with fresh takes on classic, modern classic and classics-inspired works.
Support at every level enables us to pursue inclusive casting, equitable ticket prices and titles that work well for both the general public as well as our student audiences.
and we could welcome people back to a live performance . . . but it’d be safe because we’d be outdoors.’
“As it happened, Livy was proposing an adaptation of Julius Caesar to be exploded in the middle of Worcester. Let me tell you how powerful it felt to be sitting in that space, on that evening, watching that performance and understanding that we helped support the production before it was even understood to be anyone’s beautiful experience. With the launch of THT Rep, we all have an opportunity to have that impact… to have that influence. It’s like a delicious piece of cake and you want to continue to eat. It is so fantastic. When my husband and I sit in places where we have been part of making something possible and we watch the audience around us participate, there’s just nothing like it. I welcome you into the wonderful world of patronage alongside us.“
THT Rep worked closely with our education division and adapted The Edgar Allan Poe Double Header for The Hanover Theatre’s mainstage. It played to the entire 12th grade of the Worcester Public School system as part of the Culture LEAP program. THT Rep and our education division also staged a
The announcement of THT Rep’s 2022-2023 lineup in May affirmed the repertory company’s commitment to creating dynamic theatrical events with a focus on classic, modern classic and classics-inspired works. The roster includes: a fully realized staging of Shakespeare’s Macbeth inspired by the YAC production in the previous season; a limited remount of The Edgar Allan Poe Double Header; a week-long workshop exploring an all-female cast for Arthur Miller’s The Crucible, culminating with a public staged reading and audience dialogue; and an immersive performance event called The Marvelous Party, featuring Nöel Coward’s humorous poem of the same name together with popular musical numbers. THT Rep’s ongoing programming further realizes the vision for the BrickBox as a home for professional plays in downtown Worcester.
Time flies when you are having fun and sometimes it is hard to believe that The Hanover Theatre Conservatory (THTC) opened with just 13 classes and 75 students five short years ago! We now regularly offer over 90 classes and our studios are filled with over 500 students annually. The theatre had been serving thousands of area students through our student matinees and outreach programs prior to 2017, but the opening of the conservatory was a game changer. The ability to work with and train students in stateof-the-art studios six days a week meant building deeper, more meaningful connections with the students and families we were serving. More importantly, the conservatory allowed us to build a community and second home for artists of the future.
We are so grateful to the students, families and faculty who have supported the conservatory over the last five years. After witnessing the incredible community that students experience within our walls, anonymous donors set up a $1 million endowment in late 2021. They expressed their confidence in the organization’s leadership, especially THTC President Meghan Montaner, who celebrated 15 years of service in the spring of 2022. Her dedication and talent continue to have a major positive impact on our organization, our students and our community. The donors hope their gift will raise awareness of the conservatory’s broad learning and performance opportunities. We are certain that this generous gift will allow countless young people to find their passion, their place and their voice in the world through the arts.
Annually, we award $50,000 in scholarships so that all students, regardless of their socioeconomic background, have access to the transformative power of the arts. Scholarships are made possible through our Access to the Arts Fund and the generosity of individuals who created both anonymous and named scholarships.
“THTC has helped me realize that no matter when you start something, as long as you are dedicated, motivated and work really hard, you can accomplish anything.”
-Dakota Schantz, conservatory studentThe conservatory celebrated their five-year anniversary.
“It feels good to establish a fund that will continue to make an impact for years to come,” said Don and Peg, founders of the recently named Don and Peg Harbert Family Scholarship Fund. “The performing arts are so important to a young person’s social development. The conservatory offers tremendous opportunities. Students of all ages can learn and take part in the performing arts. It fills an important need for our community, but not all students can afford to participate. So, we set up a scholarship fund. We want to make those opportunities accessible to a deserving student on an annual basis.”
When the theatre opened in 2008, Don and Peg Harbert were delighted with the wide range of cultural programming close to home. They soon became members and regular attendees. After enjoying the high quality of shows and appreciating the great customer service from staff and volunteers, the couple became Broadway Series subscribers ten years ago. A few years later, they joined the Franklin Square Society, our leadership donor group, to support the theatre’s annual operating needs and Don started to volunteer his time and talent to our organization.
“It’s exciting that the theatre is back in operation and the mainstage is hosting shows again. We are happy to be enjoying a night out at the theatre after such a long intermission. We want to see the continuation of the Broadway Series and first-class performances at the theatre. We love the conservatory’s commitment to a broad range of opportunities for all ages, backgrounds and abilities. Everybody can benefit from performing arts education and enrichment programs,“ explains Don.
Our annual musical theatre and dance intensives kept the theatre and conservatory busy all summer. Students in our Teen Youth Summer Program performed Footloose while the Pre-Teen Program presented an age-appropriate youth edition. Dante Gentile (pictured above) performs the role of Willard Hewitt in the Pre-Teen Youth Summer Program’s production of Footloose: Youth Edition. “The conservatory is a dynamic, creative jewel that offers performing opportunities to youth and adults in Central Massachusetts.”

In the spring of 2022 our Adopt-A-School Program returned, using arts to enhance the curriculum in our public schools. Both South and Burncoat high schools in Worcester partnered with us to incorporate the themes, history and sociological impacts of a Broadway show into their curriculum across every subject matter in preparation for 2,400 students (pictured above) to see the Broadway tour of Summer: The Donna Summer Musical.
In March of 2021, 1,400 Worcester Public Schools (WPS) 11th graders attended a performance of Warriors Don’t Cry. This performance was part of our annual Learning Through Education and Arts Partnership (LEAP) and is based on a book of the same title where Melba Patillo Beals gives an autobiographical account of the integration of Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas, in 1957. In April we also hosted 1,100 WPS 12th graders at a performance of THT Rep’s Poe Double Header as part of the LEAP program.
“I was able to tap into Poe’s thought process as he wrote the plays and feel the emotions he intended.”
-WPS Student
“In Warriors Don’t Cry, the story of the Little Rock Nine came to life, rather than just reading about it or seeing a video clip.”
-WPS TeacherThe Warriors Don’t Cry performance gives an autobiographical account of the integration of Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas in 1957.
“Taking classes at the conservatory for the past three years has changed my life. I can honestly say it’s what made me the well-rounded and hardworking individual I am today. From learning how to work collaboratively in large groups to working on myself individually as a performer, the skills necessary to put on a fantastic show are within me as a student and available to me via all the connections made with my peers. I am now able to offer the guidance I needed when I was younger to new students and offer a safe space for them to reach out or make mistakes. Over the past few years, the growth and change THTC has gone through is astounding. Watching it becoming a more welcoming and diverse community is what kept me coming back year after year.”
-Noveadra Sorensen, scholarship recipient“Without the Adopt-A-School Program, many of these students would not be able to experience a theatrical production. This initiative is invaluable to them and has sparked many students’ interests in theatre.”
I loved how excited our students were about the show. They loved every minute of it. My students completed beautiful art projects and were so proud to see them displayed at the theatre.
The Access to the Arts (ATTA) Fund continues to be a vital source of support for community engagement programs, providing youth and families access to the performing arts. Click here to make a donation today.
“WYSH helped me understand that social change can be as simple as having a conversation with people who are active listeners. WYSH helped me create social change by providing me the platform to have difficult, yet necessary conversations with a mass audience. This program truly changed my life forever for the better.”
We are pleased to recognize Dick Perry for his long and varied contributions to THT as our H. Carter Hunt Volunteer of the Year. He graciously applied his work experience and wisdom gained from long service with The Hanover Insurance Group, the Massachusetts Department of Revenue, Worcester Historical Museum and Friends of Hope Cemetery to help our organization in countless ways. One of his greatest joys is volunteering front and center at events, taking tickets before the shows and holding the main exit doors open for our patrons to leave safely and comfortably afterwards. His warmth is contagious, and he genuinely enjoys receiving hundreds of smiles and thank-yous from our patrons every time he volunteers for a performance at the theatre. In addition to volunteering as a greeter at countless shows, Dick has also been a reliable and enthusiastic resource for the administrative offices by lending a hand whenever and wherever needed. We truly appreciate his numerous contributions to our success!
Each year, the theatre offers internship opportunities to high school and college students interested in experiencing a community-based arts organization and learning from our team in a hands-on environment. We thank our FY22 interns for their outstanding work.

Our extraordinary and dedicated volunteers play a unique role as ambassadors, supporters, historians and tireless workers on behalf of THT. Since 2008, the volunteers have donated over 296,791 hours of service to our organization. At today’s Massachusetts volunteer equivalency rate, that equates to over $8.8 million of in-kind services. They are our brightest stars and we are deeply grateful for all they do.

As a loyal supporter and life-long educator, Paul M. Jourcin appreciated the theatre’s tremendous community value and community impact. After Paul’s death in late 2020, the theatre learned that he had bequeathed a significant gift with no restrictions. We appreciate Paul’s commitment and dedication to the theatre, as he recognized the needs of our growing organization, our educational programs and our responsibility as stewards of a historic landmark. We appreciate Paul’s commitment and dedication to the theatre.
We are grateful to this team who provides exemplary service in maintaining the Mighty Wurlitzer Organ, our treasured musical instrument. They take excellent care of the organ, so it always sounds its best, especially during our organ concerts, silent films and annual production of A Christmas Carol

“To see how the theatre has engaged with area youth has been nothing short of astounding! Through its partnership with the Worcester Public Schools, its conservatory offerings and its active engagement with the larger cultural, development and diversity efforts around the City of Worcester, the theatre has deliberately made itself accessible to the next generation of theater-goers. Kudos to The Hanover Theatre and Conservatory!”

During the past year, the theatre lost six very special people. We are grateful for their friendship and honored to celebrate the ways in which they touched our lives.
Brian Barlow was a dear friend and invaluable partner to the theatre and cultural community. Brian began his career in broadcasting as a jazz announcer at WICN, Worcester’s NPR affiliate. But he made his mark when he became general manager of the station and led WICN to become a major jazz concert producer. He collaborated with us to produce the Jazz at Sunset and many other concerts. We are truly grateful for his talent and partnership, but also his philanthropy. Brian and his wife, Janet, have been committed patrons and leadership donors since THT opened. Brian will be remembered for his musical contributions to our community, as well as his infectious love for life.
Rosalie Grenon, a long-time Franklin Square Society member and committed supporter of the theatre, had a love for music and performing arts and was delighted to attend shows at the theatre with her husband, David, and close family members. Rosalie’s beautiful smile and warm personality would light up the room and will be greatly missed.
Frances Jacobson, a founding member and leadership donor, was a devoted educator and a champion for arts education. She and her husband, Howard, attended many special events and performances since the theatre’s inception and were committed supporters of the theatre, believing in its impact on Worcester’s cultural and economic rebirth. Frances’ kind and gentle ways will be fondly remembered.
Chris Marrion, THT’s first vice president of advancement, became a valued member of the theatre family in the brief time he was with our organization. His professional fundraising experience and his deep commitment to the performing arts served the theatre well. Chris left lasting contributions to the theatre’s philanthropic efforts, and his wit and engaging sense of humor will be long remembered.
Jean McDonough was one of the true heroes of Worcester. Her appreciation of, and ability to support our organization, changed THT forever. Her legacy lives on at the JMAC, through her foundational gifts to the city’s cultural community, and especially in her family, who are also civic-minded and philanthropic. Her decades of support, generosity and dedication have been invaluable in Worcester’s journey toward becoming a truly creative city. Her impact on our organization continues to inspire our work and we are eternally grateful.
Ray Trifone was a devoted member of THT family. He began his relationship with the theatre in its inaugural season as a volunteer usher in 2008. He later became the founding maître d’ of the Franklin Square Salon where his passion for customer service brought a level of specialness to the Franklin Square Society experience. He set the standard with his warmth and grace. Ray’s green thumb provided much beauty to the plaza and made all theatre plants under his care flourish. His generous support of the Access to the Arts Fund provided for young budding artists, his top philanthropic priority. Ray gave selflessly of his time and cared deeply about the theatre’s impact on our community. We will long cherish the beautiful memories we have of our colleague and friend, Ray Trifone.
“It is an honor and a privilege to partner with The Hanover Theatre, a cultural jewel in Worcester County that has transformed itself into a dynamic showplace of art and expression. With pride we are able to leverage this partnership in sharing the beauty and art of the theatre with our employees, customers and the community.”
- Maria Salvatore, Executive Vice President Chief Culture Officer at Cornerstone Bank
