Narratological analysis The Hero’s Journey 1. THE ORDINARY WORLD The immortal Dr. Parnassus rides around London with his traveling theatre. He is accompanied by his fifteen year old daughter Valentina; Anton who is a young guy, probably around eighteen years old and who has a crush on Valentina; and Percy, who has been Dr. Parnassus’ friend for a very long time. It is a very special theatre, since it invites people to go through a mirror and enter their own imagination. Inside they must choose between good and evil.

Dr. Parnassus has made a deal with the devil to gain youth in exchange for his first born child. When his daughter reaches sixteen, he must give her to the devil. He only has three days left, which causes him to be stressful and drink a lot. His daughter doesn’t know he has made this deal with the devil and he is struggling to tell her. He tells her how he used to be a monk, telling stories to keep the universe going. One day a stranger entered the temple and he turned out to be the devil. They made a bet: whoever attracted twelve disciples first would win. Dr. Parnassus won and became immortal.

2. THE CALL TO ADVENTURE He stops his story, because the traveling theatre stops moving on a bridge. As Valentina goes outside to see what’s happening, Dr. Parnassus draws ‘the hangman’ tarot card and looks frightened. Anton explains that he saw a shadow dancing on the river, but it turned out to be someone hanging from the bridge. They rescue the stranger who seemed to be alive due to a pipe in his throat. Percy tells Anton and Valentina that Dr. Parnassus, thinking the man was dead, wants to leave him, but they put him in the trunk anyway.

The next morning Dr. Parnassus meets the stranger and realizes he is suffering from memory loss.

Anton shows the Doctor a weight in the strangers pockets, with the same mark on it as on the tarot card. He also notices the marks on his forehead. This leads him to believe that the stranger has been sent by Mr. Nick (aka the devil). Dr. Parnassus thinks this is a sign that the devil wants to make another bet and he is happy that his faith and that of his daughter might change soon.

That night Mr. Nick appears wanting to make another bet, claiming to give Dr. Parnassus some hope.

The first one to get five souls wins. Dr. Parnassus takes the bet, only to realize Mr. Nick tricked him, by only giving him until Valentina´s birthday, which is in two days.

3. REFUSAL OF THE CALL Dr. Parnassus is angry that he only has two days, but the bet has been made and even though he was tricked, the devil disappears and there is no turning back. He now has two days to gain five souls. The Doctor believes the stranger was sent to him for a reason, saying that the cards don´t lie. So that evening they try again and Dr. Parnassus is sober and focused, saying it all depends on that night.

Unfortunately things go completely wrong as Anton forces a girl into the mirror. He did this, because he overheard Dr. Parnassus telling Percy that the person who will help him get five souls will be allowed to marry his daughter. The girl´s friend panics as she hears screaming from behind the mirror. The crowd in front of the theatre rallies and Percy shoots fireworks, scaring the horses and the theatre drives away. The girl gets thrown out. Dr. Parnassus is defeated and thinks it´s all over.

He is afraid he will lose his daughter.

4. MEETING WITH THE MENTOR The stranger´s name is Tony Shepard and he works for a charity. Mr. Nick told Dr. Parnassus this when they were making the bet. After the fiasco with the girl, Tony suggests they change the style of the show in order to appeal to a wealthier crowd. He sees that Dr. Parnassus is struggling and he wants to do something for him for saving his life. The Doctor doesn´t know what to do and asks Valentina for her advice. She tells him to take the gamble and trust Tony. Since it´s Valentina´s birthday, he only has one more day to gain five souls.

5. CROSSING THE THRESHOLD Their next location is a fancy shopping mall. The décor is modernized and Tony brings a seemingly sincere monologue and manages to lure a few wealthy ladies to the mirror. The first one going in is accompanied by Tony, but with a different face. He convinces her to choose the right path and she does, exiting the Imaginarium feeling satisfied and grateful, making the crowd even more exited.

Within no time Dr. Parnassus collects four souls. He seems more confident than ever when he looks at Mr. Nick witnessing everything.

6. TESTS, ALLIES AND ENEMIES Suddenly four Russian gangsters appear at the shopping mall, looking for Tony. They see him on stage and Tony runs into the mirror, followed by the four Russians. They chase him and even though Anton showed up to try and rescue him, the gangsters caught Tony. While they put a rope around his neck, a huge Dr. Parnassus head appears and a massive tongue rolls out. Inside his mouth is a policeman trying to get the gangsters to enter Dr. Parnassus’ head. On the other side however, an old Russian lady appears. Dr. Parnassus’ act backfires and the gangsters run to the Russian lady, giving Mr. Nick four souls.

Later in the evening, someone knocks on the door and Dr. Parnassus steps outside to meet Mr. Nick.

He assumes the battle is over and Mr. Nick has come to collect his prize. Mr. Nick however, tells the doctor the girl doesn’t count, so he could still win. It’s almost eleven, so it’s not over yet.

Mr. Nick leaves and Valentina appears, checking on her father. He tells her the truth about him, her and the bet he made with the devil. Valentina gets mad and runs away upset, followed by Anton and Percy.

7. APPROACH Tony has heard the conversation between the doctor and Valentina and opens up the theatre to go into the mirror himself and become the fifth soul Dr. Parnassus needs. Valentina shows up in tears and Tony promises to bring her to the light and give her a good life. So they enter the mirror.

Inside the imaginarium first Valentina’s imagination occurs. She talks about having a normal life with kids and Tony looks a bit uncomfortable and seems to want to get rid of her. Then a crying child in the distance starts Tony’s imagination. Instead of becoming the fifth soul for Dr. Parnassus, his ego takes over and he becomes the person he was before they found him. Valentina plays along, until Anton shows up and uncovers the real truth about Tony, causing Valentina to run away and eventually trick the devil into choosing his side. The devil wins the bet, but he isn’t happy about it.

8. THE ORDEAL The devil offers to release Valentina, if Dr. Parnassus kills Tony. Apparently the devil has been after Tony for years. So the doctor kills Tony, expecting to get Valentina back, but the devil doesn’t know where she is. So he wanders around for three years trying to find her, with the fear of never finding her at all.

9. THE REWARD He suddenly is back in the real world and sees a woman resembling Valentina. He follows her as she walk into a restaurant. He looks through the window and sees her with Anton and their daughter.

They seem very happy, which makes Dr. Parnassus happy.

10. THE ROAD BACK Knowing Valentina is safe and happy, Dr. Parnassus can go on with his life. Percy shows up, encouraging him not to enter the restaurant, because he looks like a homeless guy and might frighten the child.

11. THE RESURRECTION Dr. Parnassus is selling Imaginarium toys at a market and Mr. Nick appears one more time. He tilts his head inviting Dr. Parnassus to come over, but Percy tells him to get back to work, which he does.

12. RETURN WITH THE ELIXIR Dr. Parnassus ignores the devil and continues selling Imaginarium toys, inspiring people to use their imagination.

Characters & Archetypes Dr. Parnassus – Hero The hero of the story is Dr. Parnassus. He used to be a monk, telling stories to keep the universe in existence. Then he made a deal with the devil which he won, granting him immortality. He believes he was set up and sees immortality as a curse and tries to kill himself, only to be rescued by the devil. A few centuries later he encounters a beautiful woman, but he looks like an old and dirty homeless man, so he sees no chance with her. The devil shows up again and they make an arrangement. This time the devil gives him youth and many powers, but in return he must give the devil his first born child when he or she turns sixteen.

The film starts with our hero being an old, drunk, grumpy and defeated man, carrying the burden of having to tell his daughter she will be the devil’s property within a few days.

Not only that, he feels that the world doesn’t care for his stories anymore and he sees more and more people choosing the side of the devil instead of his side, imagination. There is a lot of mystery surrounding Dr. Parnassus, especially when it comes to the Imaginarium (the traveling theatre). Dr. Parnassus has a certain power allowing him to create a surreal place behind the mirror of the Imaginarium. When someone goes in, they are given a choice and Dr. Parnassus is able to guide them somehow, but they eventually make their own choice.

After given another bet by the devil, allowing him to maybe get his daughter back, Dr. Parnassus becomes more hopeful, especially after encountering Tony Shephard. But his greatest fear soon becomes reality and he loses Valentina after he finally tells her the truth and she ends up choosing the devil’s side.

The final bet he makes with the devil will release Valentina, so Dr. Parnassus does what the devil asks him to and kills Tony to save his daughter. Three years of desperately looking for her follow and just as Dr. Parnassus falls to the ground and seems to give up, he is back in the real world and sees Valentina with Anton and their daughter, living a happy life. He finally knows his daughter is safe and sound and he return to his immortal life, selling Imaginarium toys, hoping to inspire imagination.

The name ‘Parnassus’ comes from ‘Mount Parnassus’, a mountain which in Greek mythology was worshipped by Dionysus, God of wine, fruit harvest, theatre and ritual madness. The fact that his prefix is ‘Dr.’ makes him seem wise, but it is not explained why he is a doctor or what kind of doctor.

Percy – Mentor Percy was also in the monastery with Dr. Parnassus, but it is not made clear how it’s possible that he is still alive. He is a little person and his full name is: Percival St. Antoine della Touraine et Sansepolcro da Piemonte, the Third. A quite unusual name, but it’s never explained any further in the film.

Since he’s always been on Dr. Parnassus’ side, he knows him through and through and the doctor also comes to him for advice. He is the one who works the traveling theatre and who knows the truth about Valentina. A few times Dr. Parnassus says to him ‘What would I do without you’, showing the importance of this character to the hero.

Valentina – Herald The only female character: fifteen year old Valentina, daughter of Dr. Parnassus. She is lied to about her age and is told she will turn twelve in a few days, but she knows she’s turning sixteen. Her dream is to live a normal life and her wall is decorated with magazine clippings of perfect homes and families. She loves her father and the stories he tells her, but when he tells her that she is the prize of a devil’s bet she becomes hysterical and runs away. When Tony appeared in the story, she was immediately attracted to him and she eventually follows him into his imagination, because he promised her a rich and bright life. She discovers he is a fraud and ends up with Anton.

Dr. Parnassus’ daughter is the reason he wants to beat the devil, since she is the prize. He ends up losing her, but he manages to save her freedom and safety by killing Tony. At the end of the film he sees her through a restaurant window, with Anton and their little daughter. He doesn’t go in to see her though.

Anton – Ally/Trickster Dr. Parnassus picked him of the streets and he is in love with his daughter. He helps the doctor and he may be a sort of father figure to Anton. Whenever he talks about Dr. Parnassus it’s always with much pride and admiration. In the hero’s journey he serves as an ally, helping Dr. Parnassus with whatever he’s doing. He becomes jealous of Tony when he realizes Valentina likes him.

Even though he tries to rescue Tony from the Russian gangsters, he still is the one who ruins Tony’s imagination by telling Valentina the truth about Tony.

In the first scene, Anton wears a Mercury outfit, known in Greek mythology as the god of messages/communication, financial gain, trickery and thieves. In the beginning his role is to get an audience for the performance and to convince people to go into the mirror. The theatre is very unsuccessful until Tony shows up and takes over Anton’s role as ‘messenger’. He also manages to help Dr. Parnassus during his adventure as Anton seems to ruin things. So from this point of view he could be seen as the trickster instead of an ally, even though it is all meant well.

Tony – Shapeshifter This character doesn’t just shift shapes in personality, but also physically, due to the sudden death of the original actor.

But when you look at how this character develops, it actually adds to the storyline.

When Anton sees a shadow dancing on the river, it is actually Tony hanging from the bridge. He doesn’t remember who he is and immediately starts to work with the rest of the theatre company, acting friendly and kind. When he finds a piece of newspaper and discovers who he really is, he keeps it to himself. As the story continues he becomes more selfish and greedy and we discover that the devil has actually been trying to get him for years.

Since he doesn’t believe in coincidence, Dr. Parnassus believes Tony has bent sent by Mr. Nick and is a sign that he can turn his faith around. Tony acts as a mentor when he suggests to change the style of the theatre. He turns his back on Dr. Parnassus, but to the doctor Tony is an ally and someone who can help him keep his daughter safe. When Dr. Parnassus discovers the truth he has no problem killing him in order to set his daughter free.

Mr. Nick – Shadow The devil aka Mr. Nick likes to make bets and is somehow drawn to playing with Dr. Parnassus. He is charming, yet manipulative and always has a trick up his sleeve. He wears leather black gloves, a bowler hat, is always smoking a cigarette in a cigarette holder and dresses elegantly. Whenever he appears he triggers Dr. Parnassus’ fear of losing Valentina and he leaves him either angry or desperate.

Transmedia analysis This film left me with many questions and the first one being: who IS Dr. Parnassus? The fantasy like nature of the Imaginarium raises many questions as well, even though it would be easy to say that anything goes inside it. It’s a place of imagination, so why question it if anything is possible? On the other hand, if in fact everything IS possible, than why do the people who enter have that specific imagination?

There are a few more things unclear: (the list of hermeneutic codes can be found in the appendix, the red lines are the ones I find most interesting) -

Mr. Nick always picking on Dr. Parnassus, could be a hint that Dr. Parnassus is God, or some other divine being. But this still doesn’t explain how Percy is still alive. Maybe in this universe, the devil existed before God did and Mr. Nick found the ultimate opponent in Dr. Parnassus and turned him immortal, so he would always have someone to mess with.

How is it that Percy was a monk too and is still alive? Did he also make a bet? And why does he have that long name? He doesn’t seem happy where he is, why does he stay with Dr. Parnassus?

What exactly is the Imaginarium and how does it work? Who is Dr. Parnassus and why does he have this power? Have there been any more bets between the first one and the one where he gets his youth back? When Dr. Parnassus tells Valentina the truth, he mentions that besides his youth, he also gained other powers, which ones? Why has he stayed with Percy for so long?

Conclusion I think I’d find it interesting to explore the story of Percy. In the film, Dr. Parnassus tells him a few times “What would I do without you”, with the answer being “Get a midget”. They have a special bond and Percy was in the monastery as well, but it is unclear if he also gained immortality. But since he’s still alive, he must be immortal as well.

I’d like to explore a more futuristic theme. It is something I am very interested in and I’d like to figure out what role Dr. Parnassus and Percy could have in the future world. The target group is interested in the future and sci-fi.

How come Percy now says telling the truth is a bad idea, when in the beginning he urges Dr. P to tell Valentina everything Percy says, perhaps you'll find a midget if you're lucky If Valentina want to run away so bad and especially after Dr. P told her the truth, why does she come back anyway?

In the Imaginarium Anton falls of a cliff, but what actually happens in the real world? And if they both know it's not reality, why is Valentina so eager to save him and emotional when he falls?

"I create the opportunity, it's not my fault if you're not up for it" Why does Dr.P appear in Tony's imagination, how is that even possible? When he's out of the trance the Imaginarium stops, so how could he have entered it?
