Welcome

Welcome to St. Louis, the Gateway to the West, and for the next three days, your Gateway to Communications! On behalf of the Board of Directors and the Annual Conference Committee, I want to welcome you to the 2013 FCA Annual Conference. When you think of St. Louis, three things quickly come to mind—the awesome Gateway Arch, Busch Stadium and the St. Louis Cardinals, and Anheuser-Busch/Budweiser and the iconic Clydesdales. There is plenty more to see in St. Louis, but you will experience these three things during the annual conference. Whether this is your first FCA meeting or your attendance at the annual conference borders on the “most attended conferences” record, there is always something to learn, a new friend to make, an associate member to meet, or recognition to receive. The fun of learning and networking never gets old, and this conference will provide numerous opportunities for both. For the next three days, you will be immersed in communication topics from the Early Bird sessions on Best Editorial Practices and a Social Media Workshop to the closing business meeting on Friday afternoon. This annual conference has been planned with each of you in mind. There is something for everyone, including the opportunity to make FCA better by attending the business meetings and volunteering for a committee. What better way is there to meet people and influence the future of FCA than to get involved with a committee? We are glad you are here to laugh and learn from our speakers and from each other. There are new awards to present this year, including a new Critics’ Choice award for photography. The conference culminates with the prestigious Recognition Banquet to acknowledge and honor our accomplishments. You don’t want to miss a minute of this conference, so ask questions, meet new people, and return home with new ideas, new contacts and, hopefully, new recognition hardware. Sit back and enjoy the Cardinals vs. the Mets, marvel at the Anheuser Busch Brewery tour, and take in the views of the Arch just outside the hotel door. Special Events FCA Accolades Gateway Gallery For purchase at the registration table FCA’s on-site philanthropic program was launched at the 2012 Annual Conference in Atlanta. The program was renamed FCA Accolades this year to allow FCA members to honor one another while supporting a nonprofit in the local community where the Annual Conference is held. This year’s nonprofit is the St. Louis-based street publication What’s Up Magazine, a successful social enterprise that has provided income opportunity to the poor and homeless through publication and street sales of an urban-issues magazine.

Anheuser Busch Brewery Tour Thursday, May 16 | 5:30 - 7:45pm Anheuser Busch Brewery hosted by Shelle Design

Join your fellow FCA attendees and Shelle Design for a tour of the oldest and largest Anheuser-Busch Brewery, which includes visits to three national historic landmarks. The tour offers visitors an in-depth look at how some of America’s favorite beers are crafted using the finest, all-natural ingredients. Since its founding in 1852 in St. Louis, Anheuser-Busch has been perfecting this process, taking pride in producing some of the world’s finest beers, one batch at a time. We will have an opportunity to taste some of Anheuser-Busch’s quality products in the Hospitality Room at the conclusion of the tour. Soft drinks and snacks are also available.

Jay Swoboda, Editor of What’s Up Magazine, will discuss the growth of homelessness in America, the causes of homelessness, and the role of street publications like What’s Up Magazine. Swoboda will talk about hope and the need for action by the entire community that involves action and risk if we are to change the course of our human family.

During this session we will discuss: • How to continue to ensure the relevance of your print magazine in today’s highly-visual and digital media world. • Who is your target audience? We will discuss its segments and how to generate engaging and relevant content. • What type of magazine content do we need to generate and how do we present it in order to further our missions and grow the affinity our members feel with our organizations? • How do we compete with the big-budgets, fancy-photoshoots, and celebrity-filled newsstand publications? We will discuss several strategies. • We will finish with a creative exercise that will provide practical creative solutions to improving our publications.

Fraternal Thoughts: Using Social Media to Elevate the Fraternity Experience 3:00pm - 5:00pm | Gateway 4 Blogs and social media can be more than just vehicles for communication­­ —they can be tools to inspire and change behavior. Knowing and understanding the tools—such as Facebook, Twitter, and Blogger is the first step. However, the message is still what matters the most. This session will explore the current landscape of social media, case studies in success, and strategies for how to use these tools to tackle some of our biggest challenges in fraternity and sorority life. Some of the most successful blogs, twitter campaigns, and social networking strategies will be analyzed and discussed. Bring along your greatest thoughts, ideas, and questions.

Let’s face it. We are graphic designers, editors, photographers, journalists, and marketing people. By and large, we are not conference gurus, leadership developers or the party planners. What we do is get the message out and execute event themes in a graphical way. Most of us do not have enough time to think about putting an elaborate graphic package together for a largescale event, let alone an adequate budget to communicate what our organizations want us to. In this session, we will take a moment to concentrate on event promotions in a way that is conducive to all deadlines and budgets and seek to engage any population from 18 to 90 year-olds.

A Surprise Rebranding 11:00am - 12:00pm | Grand Suites 2 & 3 Research. Research. Research. Don’t underestimate the power of research. In 2011, Pi Beta Phi’s marketing and communications team began its work on a website redesign. What was going to be a simple face-lift and navigation upgrade turned into a full integration of the Members-Only website into the main site, including a searchable library of resources and a volunteer job board. Shortly after we launched, our research also led us to completely revamp our Fraternity brochure, and with it, all our parent communication tools. When it was all said and done—with exception of our logo—we had completely rebranded. Through the power of research and key stakeholder management, we were able to successfully launch our new look externally and to our membership.

Meet Our Speakers JAY SWOBODA, What’s Up Magazine EARLY BIRD GENERAL SESSION

Jay Swoboda, Executive Director, is the founder and editor-in-chief of What’s Up Magazine. Swoboda started the magazine after meeting the founder of a similar publication in Boston, MA. Swoboda brought the idea of a street publication to St. Louis in the fall of 2000 upon his return from Americorps. Through his efforts and those of countless volunteers the organization has become the source of social awareness news in St. Louis. Swoboda is a 2002 graduate of Washington University in St. Louis and currently is building energy-efficient, affordable homes in the St. Louis area.

DANIELLE HOHMEIER, Atomicdust GENERAL SESSION I

Danielle Hohmeier is the Online Marketing Manager at St. Louis-based, brand marketing firm, Atomicdust. She is responsible for developing and implementing social media and content strategies, paid search advertising campaigns, community engagement and search engine optimization—specifically for B2B brands in conservative industries. You can follow Danielle on Twitter at @daniellesmyname.

Bruce worked at Sigma Chi Headquarters for over 8 years and has worked directly with several Greek-letter organizations for more than 15 years. His experience has provided him with an intimate understanding of your audience, your goals, and your challenges as staff members and as an organization. Editorial design is Bruce’s passion and improving the publications of Greek-letter organizations continues to be the driving force that founded his design firm, Tria Designs, in 2009.

JOHN SHERTZER, Fraternal Thoughts EARLY BIRD SESSION II

John Shertzer has managed the Fraternal Thoughts blog since 2008, and the blog is home to over 100 unique posts. John is a former VP of Leadership Education for the NIC, has coordinated UIFI and other programs, and is a former board member of the Center for the Study of the College Fraternity. John joined Theta Chi at Miami University and is a former member of Theta Chi’s Leadership and Education Committee. 14

Jesse is a Partner and the Account Director at Atomicdust. In addition to leading the account team and overseeing client relationships, he is heavily involved in developing the strategies at the heart of the agency’s work. Jesse’s passion lies in solving B2B branding challenges in conservative industries and saturated markets.

AIMEE ASH, Willow Marketing BREAKOUT SESSION I

Aimee Ash has a over a decade of experience working with fraternal organizations and member-based associations. Aimee earned a bachelor’s degree in public and corporate communications and journalism from Butler University and a Master of Arts degree in student affairs administration in higher education from Ball State University. She is a certified association executive through the American Society of Association Executives. In her role at Willow Marketing, she works with non-profit, membership-based, and fraternal organizations, focusing on managing multiple brand entities and providing consistent messages in order to enhance the mission. Aimee is a member of the American Society of Association Executives, the Indiana Society of Association Executives, and the Association of Fraternity/Sorority Advisors. She is an active volunteer for the Butler University Alumni Association and the Circle of Sisterhood Foundation.

Chris Agne is Vice President of Sales and Marketing for the Print Media Division. Chris has over 25 years of experience in supply chain consultative sales and has been very successful implementing strategies for value-add sales success.

MIKE BARON, NPC Inc. BREAKOUT SESSION I

Mike Baron has been with NPC for three years as its Digital Print and Mailing Manager. Mike manages NPC’s 24/7, high-security facility where they produce, process, and mail over 120 million mail pieces annually. Prior to joining NPC, Mike had a 27-year printing career as General Manager with Printegra Inc. where he was also instrumental in developing customer print and mail solutions within many Printegra facilities throughout the United States and England.

University of Missouri School of Journalism GENERAL SESSION II & MAGAZINE CRITIQUES Jennifer Rowe chairs the magazine journalism faculty and has taught various magazine classes since joining the School of Journalism in 1998. She also serves as editorial director of Vox, an award-winning weekly city magazine. Rowe worked as communications coordinator and editor for an association in St. Louis from 1989 to 1996, during which she was elected president of an association of editors. Rowe holds both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the Missouri School of Journalism. Having been a contributing editor for Italian Cooking and Living magazine as well as the Magazine of Cucina Italiana for more than five years, Rowe has also written freelance articles for Runner’s World, Elle, Real Simple, Westways, and St. Louis magazines, among others. She is a speaker at a variety of conferences and workshops across the country. Rowe has earned two of the University of Missouri’s more prestigious teaching awards: the William T. Kemper Fellowship for Teaching Excellence in 2009 and the Provost’s Outstanding Junior Faculty Teaching Award in 2004.

JEANNETTE COOPERMAN, St. Louis Magazine MAGAZINE CRITIQUES

Jeannette Cooperman is a staff writer for St. Louis Magazine. She was editor-inchief of St. Louis Magazine for two and a half years; during her tenure the magazine’s newsstand sales increased over 50 percent and won two national awards from the City and Regional Magazine Association. She has also served as editor of Saint Louis University’s alumni magazine, St. Louis College of Pharmacy’s alumni magazine, and Barnes Hospital magazine. She has done stylistic editing for 15 books and written feature articles for many major magazines. She holds a doctorate in American studies and undergraduate degrees in philosophy and communication from Saint Louis University. Over the years, she has interviewed artists and murderers, chefs, polo players, symphony conductors, heroin addicts, a Trappist monk, a Bulgarian spy, and Martha Stewart before it all fell apart.

Meet Our Speakers DANI HIAR, Leadership Safari GENERAL SESSION III

Dani Hiar has spent the past 20 years exploring what she wants to be when she grows up. Apparently, attaining four college degrees, which include two graphic design, two in educational leadership, and a fifth degree (a doctorate in education) in progress, has not helped to narrow this down. Throughout her time in college, Dani worked as an advertising designer for a start-up fashion magazine and the art director for a university publications office while taking on freelance projects. Dani has been successful integrating her two passions: educational leadership and graphic design. For the past 18 years, she’s been a director, developer, supervisor, instructor, producer, and advisor, among many other roles. Dani’s graphic design skills are built upon a foundation of event promotion, university communications, private clients, and pure hysteria. Pending the completion of her doctorate, Dani’s goal is to continue to mentor young graphic designers while pushing for innovative ways to communicate and engage with her favorite populations: collegians and university communities.

JEANNE TYSON, UCLA Extension

EILY CUMMINGS, Pi Beta Phi BREAKOUT SESSION II

As the Marketing and Communications Director for Pi Beta Phi, Eily Cummings promotes and protects the Pi Phi brand. She provides media assistance to all Pi Phi volunteers, chapters, and alumnae, particularly in crisis communications. Eily has marketing experience in the financial and engineering industries. She holds a bachelor’s degree in advertising from the University of Missouri and a master’s degree in media communications from Webster University.

JENNY SCHMIDT, Pi Beta Phi BREAKOUT SESSION II

As Assistant Director, Marketing and Communications, for Pi Beta Phi, Jenny Schmidt coordinates marketing efforts for the Fraternity’s in-house store, Pi Phi Express, and all extension-related communications, including applications and materials for new Pi Phi chapters. Jenny has served as Editor of The Arrow magazine, Special Events Coordinator, and Manual Coordinator for Pi Beta Phi. She holds a bachelor’s degree in English from Drury University.

GENERAL SESSION IV & BREAKOUT SESSION II Jeanne Tyson is a cinematographer and filmmaker who was born and raised in Mobile, Alabama. Jeanne graduated from Rhodes College with a Bachelor of Arts in Art and Theatre. She completed the MFA program for production and cinematography at UCLA’s School for Theatre, Film, and Television and is now based in Los Angeles. Jeanne has shot several features, dozens of shorts, and many documentaries. Her work has been featured in film festivals throughout the U.S. and abroad. Her first feature film, Against the Grain, directed by Elias G. Mael, is currently nominated for Best Diaspora Feature at the Africa Movie Academy Awards. Most recently, Jeanne worked directly with the executive producers of the Academy Awards as their behindthe-scenes videographer, and she is currently in production on the feature, Limo Ride. Jeanne also teaches three courses in cinematography at the UCLA Extension program for Entertainment Studies.

FCA Committees Every member is encouraged to serve on an FCA committee. If you are interested in a particular committee, feel free to contact the chairperson or any FCA Board member. Committees will meet at lunch on Friday to begin planning for the year’s activities. ANNUAL CONFERENCE

Plans, promotes and conducts a successful Annual Conference, perhaps the most visible and direct benefit to most FCA members.

AWARDS

The Annual Awards Competition fosters healthy competition among members and encourages the exchange of ideas to advance the fraternal movement. The Association strives to recognize excellence in both publications and communications.

BROWN BAG LUNCHES

Plans, promotes, and conducts the monthly Brown Bag Lunches in Indianapolis by securing locations, selecting topics and speakers, and encouraging attendance through emails and social media.

INVESTMENT/GRANT

The investment and grant committee is comprised of a diverse collection of FCA members to review, enhance and increase the visibility/proper use of FCA’s portfolio.

MARKETING

Coordinates communication to all member organizations, sponsors, and honorary members. Compiles, develops, and distributes the monthly e-news (internal), as well as the quarterly printed newsletter “Briefings” (external). Maintains website and oversees social media presence, fostering conversation and networking. Coordinates press releases as needed.

MIDYEAR CONFERENCE

Plans, organizes, and implements the Midyear Conference in November.

MEMBERSHIP

Helps members new to FCA gain a working knowledge of the responsibilities and opportunities associated with Greek-letter communications.

SPONSORS/ASSOCIATE MEMBERS

Recruits new associate members and sponsors of FCA conferences and helps them get the most out of their membership. Also transitions loyal sponsors to Associate Member status and provides additional benefits.

VARNER AND FORD AWARDS

Oversees the nomination and selection process of the Varner and Ford Awards presented during the FCA Annual Conference. The Evin C. Varner, Jr. Award (Alpha Sigma Phi) recognizes an outstanding fraternal communicator. This recipient should be one who inspires others by communicating the meaning of fraternity or fraternal cooperation. The Marilyn Simpson Ford Award (Pi Beta Phi) recognizes members who distinguish themselves through outstanding service to the organization.


Meet Our Interns RANDI AMALFITANO is a junior

at New York University studying English, Creative Writing and Psychology. She was always interested in joining a sorority, but she never fathomed how far it would take her. NYU Greek Life has given Randi an outlet to grow and express herself, making her a better person, leader, and friend. She is an active member of Pi Beta Phi and the NYU Panhellenic community, previously serving on both executive boards until she became Panhellenic President in December 2012. Randi loves serving on the Panhellenic Council because she not only gets a chance to help her own chapter, she has the opportunity to help seven others chapters as well.

STEVE BACKER

is a first-year graduate student studying Higher Education Administration at Southeast Missouri State University. As an undergraduate, he was active in the Delta-Phi Zeta of Lambda Chi Alpha where he served in various positions. Steve also served as the Interfraternity Council President where he was instrumental in improving the fraternity/sorority image on the campus. He presently works for the Southeast Missouri University Foundation and supervises the university mentorship program. Steve is also an intern at Phi Kappa Tau Fraternity where he manages volunteer development. Additionally, he has interned and presented at the AFLV Central Fraternal Leadership Conference. Steve looks forward to joining the Southeast Missouri State Greek Life office in the fall as the graduate assistant for fraternity/sorority life.

McKENZIE MULLINS

is a native of Bowling Green, Kentucky, and a 2013 graduate of Western Kentucky University. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in Communication Studies and graduated as the Communication Studies Major of the Year. McKenzie is a member of Sigma Chi fraternity and has served the Student Government Association as a student senator for three years and PR Committee Chair. He is also a member of PRSSA and Lambda Pi Eta. McKenzie served as editor of his high school newspaper and was awarded First Place for Newswriting at the 2009 Kentucky High School Journalism Association’s state competition. This summer, he will intern for US Representative Brett Guthrie (KY) in Washington, D.C.

MADELINE OLHOEFT

is a rising senior at The Ohio State University majoring in Strategic Communication with minors in Biology and General Business, and she has specific interests in marketing, advertising and public relations. Madeline is a member of Delta Delta Delta and serves as Nu Chapter’s Vice President of Administration. Madeline has served as sponsor chair, spirit committee chair, and a member of the philanthropy committee. As part of the philanthropy committee, she has worked to raise over $75,000 for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. She is also a member of the Zeta Chi chapter of Order of Omega. Madeline is from Buffalo, New York, and enjoys sailing and spending time outdoors.
