OUR STORY

OUR COMMITMENT

In 2006 an Blake Mycoskie, an American travelor, befriended children in Argentina. He found that none of the kids had anything to wear on their feet. Wanting to help, he created TOMS Shoes with the idea that with every pair of shoes purchased, a pair would be given to a child in need. Blake returned to Argentina with family, friends and staff with 10,000 pairs of shoes made possible by caring TOMS customers. Since then, TOMS has given over 150,000 pairs of shoes to children in need. TOMS plans to give over 300,000 pairs of shoes to children in need around the world in 2009.

What we do

WHY SHOES?

Most children in developing countries grow up barefoot. Whether doing chores, at play or just walking around, these children are at risk. Walking is often the primary form of transportation in developing countries. Children may walk for miles to get water, food, shelter and medical treatment. Wearing shoes enables them to walk distances that wouldn’t be possible barefoot. Wearing shoes prevents getting cuts and sores on your feet on unsafe roads and from contaminated soil. These injuries can be painful and can lead to infection. The leading cause of disease in developing countries is soil-transmitted parasites. Wearing shoes can prevent this and the risk of amputation.

Since our start in May 2006, TOMS has given over 150,000 pairs of shoes to children in need through the purchases of caring customers. In 2009, TOMS plans to give over 300,000 pairs of shoes to children in need. around the world.

How we give

TOMS shoes gives through Shoe Drop Tours and trusted organizations. Along with Non-Governmental Organizations and legally recognized non-profits, TOMS gives shoes year round. TOMS shoes also partners with Friends of TOMS, a nonprofit organizations that helps us with our Shoe Drop Tours and One for One movement.

What are Shoe Drop Tours?

Shoe Drop Tours are opportunities where volunteers give shoes to children in need and can use them to take “His little feet were covered in life-changing steps. These steps sores. When I held them in my can take them to school, to fresh hand they were so rough and water and to protect from lifehard they felt like potatoes, threatening disease.

Children can’t go to school if they don’t have shoes because most schools require them to wear shoes. If they don't have shoes, they don't go to school. If they don't receive an education, they don't have the opportunity to real- but when I placed the shoes on his feet his face lit up with a ize their potential.

smile that immediately melted Friends of TOMS creates volunteer opportunities with organizations my heart. True happiness.”
