DIGESTING SYSTEM

DESIGN DESCRIPTIOIN

Plastic waste pollution has become a pressing environmental concern, particularly for sea creatures and seabirds. Tourism plays a critical role in addressing this issue, especially during the summer months when plastic litter accumulates on beaches. To combat this problem, the project aims to develop a mealworm-led sustainable recycling system that digests plastic waste found on beaches, producing food resources for humans and other animals. The project also includes an educational exhibition space to raise awareness about the importance of sustainable recycling practices.

The project began with a study of various insects, with a particular focus on mealworms. As a widely used food source for birds, fish, poultry, and even humans, mealworms have the potential to serve as a biodegradable source of plastic waste digestion while remaining a safe protein-rich food source. Through extensive research and experimentation, the project team developed a system to collect beach waste and breed yellow mealworms.

The resulting mechanical system takes inspiration from the form and characteristics of the mealworm, with a bambooshaped body, transparent and uneven skin, mouthparts, and legs and feet. The translucent skin of the structure allows visitors to witness the gradual degradation of plastic waste, while the open space environment provides a natural setting for observing the mealworms at work. The building's design prioritizes the needs and wellbeing of the mealworms over human space consumption, highlighting their importance as the project's primary protagonist.

In summary, the project aims to develop a sustainable recycling system that utilizes mealworms to digest plastic waste found on beaches, producing food resources for humans and other animals. The accompanying exhibition space raises awareness about sustainable recycling practices and highlights the vital role that mealworms play in addressing plastic waste pollution. The resulting mechanical structure is inspired by the form and function of the mealworm, prioritizing their needs over human space consumption.

WHY NOT TO TRY TO EAT MEALWORM SNACKS AND FOODS?

-Mealworm larvae contain 56.58% crude protein, 28.20% fat. -Much higher than conventional animal foods such as eggs, beef, and lamb, and it is easy to digest and absorb.

“KING OF PROTEIN” GOOD TASTE

-Mealworm has good taste, unique flavor, and is easily accepted by consumers.

-Can be baked, fried, and processed into nutritious protein drinks, refined protein powder, and other forms of food.

-Dried yellow mealworms can be eaten as an aperitif and come in a range of flavours. Alternatively, the insect can be turned into a flour-type ingredient for a dessert.

MEALWORMS CAN EAT PLASTIC WASTE

The latest research published in Environmental Science & Technology showed that tiny mealworms are not only able to eat and digest various forms of chemical-laden plastic waste, but they also remain safe as a protein-rich food source for other animals.

The research discovered that they could eat polystyrene and polyethylene, meaning that these insects could break down multiple types of plastic. And it’s amazing that mealworms can eat a chemical additive without it building up in their body over time. Mealworms in the experiment excreted about half of the polystyrene they consumed as tiny, partially degraded fragments and the other half as carbon dioxide. And one research indicated that the comparison of the mealworms who grew up eating plastic and those who grew up eating cereals did not have any health problems.

ERELATIVELY HIGH DENSITY IN CLOSED SPACE.
While soaking up the cadence of crashing waves on the beach, no one wants to think about how the ocean has basically become garbage soup. There is plenty of rubbish left on the beach especially after the hottest days of the year—and most of it is plastic. This rubbish really spoiling the beach. I would rather read book.

DESIGN STATEMENT

The tower is stemmed from an idea of bringing the horizontal scenery of south park to a vertical living space. It will be a kind of link between natural parks and residential areas and create a space for the harmonious coexistence of city and nature. The tower is expected to be a happy village where people will live their lives with full of joys, experience good facilities and high level of self-sufficiency.

Often, for a high-rise building, we can always see the result of the project before starting the construction, and after it’s over the building inevitably retains int invariable shape. Like each room is dead without people, similarly the skyscrapers, hiding their inner rooms behind the ingle façade, look lifeless. In this work, I want to my design of this kind of future apartment, it will develop in time taking arbitrary shape. It look will be influenced by numerous people willing to live in this house. Residents can choose and customized different apartment unit based on a standard unit, depending on preferences and needs of each person a separate living environment, including the house and the yard, will be formed.

Excepted the modular housing units, the apartment also enabled by vertical farming ad recycling system to realize a high self-sufficient lifestyle, communal space including water zone, play ground and parks also provide people a healthier living. The shape of these public space are mainly derived from triangle- which is the key point in the standard unit design.
