Welcome, The launch of a new season is the meeting point of multiple timelines. On one end, there are performances in this brochure that we have anticipated bringing for three years or more: When we learned Michael Tilson Thomas would conclude his tenure with the San Francisco Symphony next season, having him return to Jackson Hall—which he and the SFS opened in 2002—became imperative. On the other end, are those events that came to light as we neared the finish line, such as when we found out, only a few months ago, that the iconic singer-songwriter John Prine was eager to make his Mondavi Center debut. In between those long-planned and urgently added events are others that we booked in the year leading up to our season announcement. This season, as with every season, we have aimed to strike a balance between much-loved artists in return engagements and those new to our audiences, between emerging artists early in their career and established stars. Whether your tastes run to one genre, or you are an omnivorous arts consumer, we offer a range of options that will fit your budget and give you a broad picture of what’s happening today. As you explore the 19-20 season, I urge you to take a chance on something new. One of the best ways to do so is to explore the DIRECTOR’S CHOICE shows marked throughout the book, and listed at left. These events feature performers who are perhaps not on your radar but truly should be. John Prine with special guest Kelsey Waldon Two-time Grammy award–winner and American treasure John Prine makes his long-overdue debut on the Mondavi Center stage. Since his eponymously titled first album in 1971, Prine has continued to write and perform songs that have become central to our American musical heritage. Classics like “Angel from Montgomery,” “Sam Stone,” “Paradise” and “Hello in There” speak to the everyday experience of ordinary people with a simple honesty and an extraordinary ability to get right through to the heart of the listener. Long considered a “songwriter’s songwriter,” Prine is a rare talent whose writing is greatly admired by his peers. Kelsey Waldon, one of country music’s most promising rising stars, opens the evening.

Terry Virts NASA Astronaut View From Above Sometimes, a little distance is all you need to see things in a brand-new way. For astronaut Terry Virts, his newfound perspective was from the International Space Station (ISS), where he installed the Cupola module, granting an unprecedented 360-degree view from the station. When he later became the commander of the ISS, he made good use of the Cupola, taking more photographs than any astronaut who came before him. Many of those images were later used in the National Geographic book View From Above and IMAX film A Beautiful Planet, but to hear Virts tell it, no photo can capture the perfect shade of blue from a sunrise viewed from outer space.

Andrew Bird with special guest Meshell Ndegeocello Andrew Bird is an internationally acclaimed multiinstrumentalist, vocalist, whistler and songwriter. Bird has recorded and toured extensively worldwide. He has recorded with the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, appeared as “Dr. Stringz” on Jack’s Big Music Show, and headlined concerts at Carnegie Hall, Sydney Opera House, Walt Disney Concert Hall and festivals worldwide. More recently, Bird has released a series of site-specific improvisational short films and recordings called Echolocations, recorded in remote and acoustically interesting spaces: a Utah canyon, an abandoned seaside bunker, the middle of the Los Angeles River, and a reverberant stone-covered aqueduct in Lisbon. Bird’s latest album, My Finest Work Yet, was released in March on Loma Vista Recordings.

Bonnie and Clyde Directed by Arthur Penn Bonnie Parker (Faye Dunaway), a bored waitress, falls in love with an ex-con named Clyde Barrow (Warren Beatty) and together they start a violent crime spree through the country, stealing cars and robbing banks. Bonnie and Clyde is considered a landmark film, and is regarded as one of the first films of the New Hollywood era, since it broke many cinematic taboos and was popular with the younger generation. Its success prompted other filmmakers to be more open in presenting sex and violence in their films. November Napoleon Dynamite Live! Film Screening followed by a conversation with Jon Heder, Efren Ramirez and Jon Gries The beloved indie classic Napoleon Dynamite is celebrating its 15-year anniversary. Since then much has changed, but the characters, as enduring as they are endearing, stay in our hearts. Appealing to the innerteenager in each of us, the story, and more importantly the dialogue, makes Napoleon Dynamite one of the most quoted movies of our time, making us laugh—and laugh hard—over and over again. Sérgio Mendes & Bebel Gilberto The 60th Anniversary of Bossa Nova From “Chega de Saudade” to “The Girl from Ipanema,” the Brazilian bossa nova has defined cosmopolitan cool from the late-1950s to today. The artform created by Tom Jobim and João Gilberto has been explored by musicians Stan Getz, Frank Sinatra and the SFJAZZ Collective, and inspired the next wave of Brazilian Tropicalismo artists like Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil. This celebration pairs producer, composer, keyboardist, vocalist and Brasil 66 founder Sérgio Mendes and singer Bebel Gilberto, daughter of João, whose 2000 album Tanto Tempo redefined samba and bossa nova for a new generation.

November Musica Nuda Comprised of just two musicians from Italy, Petra Magoni (voice) and Ferruccio Spinetti (double bass), Musica Nuda is a prime example of an ensemble whose value is greater than the sum of its parts. They use a bit of jazz, a bit of songwriting, and elements of rock, punk and classical music to underline the value of a lyric and explore the meaning of every song whether dramatic, funny, sarcastic or romantic. They approach performance as a dialogue rather than as a singer with accompanist, and while they are commited to their work, they do not take themselves too seriously.

Merce Cunningham Centennial CNDC d’Angers/Robert Swinston Honoring what would have been Merce Cunningham’s 100th birthday, CNDC d’Angers and Artistic Director Robert Swinston bring together two of Cunningham’s landmark works, Beach Birds and BIPED, each with live musical accompaniment. Cunningham’s genius has had a defining impact on modern dance and the avant-garde. His appearance with his company at the Mondavi Center in 2008, during which they performed BIPED (a work that features massive projections) was a landmark moment for modern dance in the Sacramento region. Swinston was a member of the Merce Cunningham Dance Company for more than 30 years, and served as Cunningham’s assistant beginning in 1992. With CNDC d’Angers, Swinston brings his very personal interpretation of Cunningham’s legacy to this production.

Zurich Chamber Orchestra Daniel Hope, music director and violin One of the pleasures of working at the Mondavi Center is the ability to build relationships with artists and ensembles. Hearing a few bars of the Zurich Chamber Orchestra were all the encouragement we needed to invite them back. For this program, violinist Daniel Hope (artistic planner at the New Century Chamber Orchestra) and company pair Vivaldi’s classic Four Seasons with German composer Max Richter’s riveting re-interpretation of the piece. Harlem 100 Featuring Mwenso and the Shakes

December Mary Chapin Carpenter & Shawn Colvin: Together On Stage Singers, songwriters and folk legends Mary Chapin Carpenter and Shawn Colvin share a rare duo performance of treasured hits and an exploration of the songwriter’s craft. With songs like “Passionate Kisses” and “He Thinks He’ll Keep Her,” Chapin Carpenter has won five Grammy awards (with 15 nominations) and is one of only 15 female members of the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame. Danú An Emerald Isle Christmas The cracking Irish band Danú returns to the Mondavi Center with special guests for An Emerald Isle Christmas, celebrating the holiday, as well as Danú’s 25th anniversary, in time-honored Irish fashion. Music, song and dance are a vital part of joyous community celebrations across Ireland during the holiday season. An Emerald Isle Christmas offers a taste of these extraordinary and centuries-old events. Based in County Waterford, Danú boasts a traditional but modern sound with virtuoso players on the uilleann pipes, accordion and fiddle, and the vocals of Nell Ní Chróinínn, joined on this special occasion by colorful Irish step dancers.

December–January Pink Martini Unparalleled purveyors of a multilingual blend of cosmopolitan sounds, Pink Martini deliver beloved songs from around the globe, and a dash of holiday music to celebrate the season. Led by bandleader Thomas Lauderdale who will be joined by vocalist China Forbes, the “little orchestra” draws inspiration from music all over the world, crossing genres of classical, jazz and old-fashioned pop. Badlands
Directed by Terrence Malick An impressionable teenage girl (Sissy Spacek) from a dead-end town and her older greaser boyfriend (Martin Sheen) embark on a killing spree in the South Dakota badlands. Loosely based on a true story, Badlands is often cited by film critics as one of the greatest and most influential films of all time. The film was also notable for its lyrical photography and its music, which includes pieces by Carl Orff. In 1993, the film was selected for preservation by the Library of Congress for being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.”

Tord Gustavsen Trio Norwegian pianist Tord Gustavsen creates lyrical, stripped-down music that is deceptive in its simplicity. On his recent album, The Other Side, Gustavsen returns to the piano trio setting, expanding its repertoire with new compositions as well as arrangements of J.S. Bach chorales and traditional Scandinavian hymns. The elements long-present in Gustavsen’s work remain intact: an appreciation for silence and space, a reverence built on the hymns of his youth, a Nordic kind of soulfulness and an instinct for memorable compositions.

Curtis on Tour Vera Quartet and Meng-Chieh Liu, piano The Mondavi Center’s longstanding partnership with Curtis on Tour brings us faculty pianist Meng-Chieh Liu and the Vera Quartet, which is currently the string quartet-in-residence at the Curtis Institute of Music. A recipient of the 2002 Avery Fisher Career Grant, Liu first made headlines in 1993 as a 21-year-old student, when he substituted for André Watts at the Academy of Music in Philadelphia with just three hours’ notice. Cécile McLorin Salvant Ogresse Cécile McLorin Salvant’s Ogresse is an original song cycle on which she collaborated with arranger and conductor Darcy James Argue. This latest project from the two-time Grammy winner is a work both musical and narrative, a fairytale-like musical journey about a female ogre who falls in love with a man and, in the end, devours him. Since the release of Cécile, her 2010 debut album, Salvant has been wowing critics and audiences, including in her three Mondavi Center performances over the past four years. Backed with a big band and ingenious arrangements by Argue, this parable that touches on race and gender with humor and insight is a landmark artistic statement for Salvant.

Alfredo Rodríguez & Pedrito Martinez Grammy-nominated artists Alfredo Rodríguez and Pedrito Martinez first worked together on Rodríguez’s 2012 release Invasion Parade. April Vladimir Feltsman, piano Connections, Influences and Inspirations, Part III In this third and final edition of his concert trilogy, Vladimir Feltsman shares the final act of a story he began telling at Mondavi Center in 2018. Known as one of the most versatile and commanding musicians of our time, pianist and conductor Feltsman covered works by Bach, Beethoven and Chopin in year one; and by Schumann and Brahms in year two. UC Davis Department of Music
The music department at UC Davis presents more than 120 concerts annually that reflect a diverse array of compositional and musical styles. The UC Davis Symphony Orchestra (Christian Baldini, music director and conductor), Choruses (Caleb Lewis, director) and Concert Band (Pete Nowlen, director) all call Jackson Hall at the Mondavi Center their home and present regular concerts there. These events do not count toward a CYO subscription.
