Welcome, The launch of a new season is the meeting point of multiple timelines. On one end, there are performances in this brochure that we have anticipated bringing for three years or more: When we learned Michael Tilson Thomas would conclude his tenure with the San Francisco Symphony next season, having him return to Jackson Hall—which he and the SFS opened in 2002—became imperative. On the other end, are those events that came to light as we neared the finish line, such as when we found out, only a few months ago, that the iconic singer-songwriter John Prine was eager to make his Mondavi Center debut. In between those long-planned and urgently added events are others that we booked in the year leading up to our season announcement. This season, as with every season, we have aimed to strike a balance between much-loved artists in return engagements and those new to our audiences, between emerging artists early in their career and established stars. Whether your tastes run to one genre, or you are an omnivorous arts consumer, we offer a range of options that will fit your budget and give you a broad picture of what’s happening today. As you explore the 19-20 season, I urge you to take a chance on something new. One of the best ways to do so is to explore the DIRECTOR’S CHOICE shows marked throughout the book, and listed at left. These events feature performers who are perhaps not on your radar but truly should be. Year after year, our most enthusiastic audience compliments come from shows like these that have the capacity to surprise. I look forward to welcoming you in the Mondavi Center this season.

Terry Virts NASA Astronaut View From Above Sometimes, a little distance is all you need to see things in a brand-new way. For astronaut Terry Virts, his newfound perspective was from the International Space Station (ISS), where he installed the Cupola module, granting an unprecedented 360-degree view from the station. When he later became the commander of the ISS, he made good use of the Cupola, taking more photographs than any astronaut who came before him. Many of those images were later used in the National Geographic book View From Above and IMAX film A Beautiful Planet, but to hear Virts tell it, no photo can capture the perfect shade of blue from a sunrise viewed from outer space.

Bonnie and Clyde Directed by Arthur Penn Bonnie Parker (Faye Dunaway), a bored waitress, falls in love with an ex-con named Clyde Barrow (Warren Beatty) and together they start a violent crime spree through the country, stealing cars and robbing banks. Bonnie and Clyde is considered a landmark film, and is regarded as one of the first films of the New Hollywood era, since it broke many cinematic taboos and was popular with the younger generation. Its success prompted other filmmakers to be more open in presenting sex and violence in their films. The film’s ending also became iconic as “one of the bloodiest death scenes in cinematic history” (The New York Times).

November Musica Nuda Comprised of just two musicians from Italy, Petra Magoni (voice) and Ferruccio Spinetti (double bass), Musica Nuda is a prime example of an ensemble whose value is greater than the sum of its parts. They use a bit of jazz, a bit of songwriting, and elements of rock, punk and classical music to underline the value of a lyric and explore the meaning of every song whether dramatic, funny, sarcastic or romantic. They approach performance as a dialogue rather than as a singer with accompanist, and while they are commited to their work, they do not take themselves too seriously.

Loosely based on a true story, Badlands is often cited by film critics as one of the greatest and most influential films of all time. The film was also notable for its lyrical photography and its music, which includes pieces by Carl Orff. In 1993, the film was selected for preservation by the Library of Congress for being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.”

Tord Gustavsen Trio Norwegian pianist Tord Gustavsen creates lyrical, stripped-down music that is deceptive in its simplicity. On his recent album, The Other Side, Gustavsen returns to the piano trio setting, expanding its repertoire with new compositions as well as arrangements of J.S. Bach chorales and traditional Scandinavian hymns. The elements long-present in Gustavsen’s work remain intact: an appreciation for silence and space, a reverence built on the hymns of his youth, a Nordic kind of soulfulness and an instinct for memorable compositions.

“Cutting-edge circus artistry.” —The Dance Journal

Under the direction of circus visionary Yaron Lifschitz, Circa brings its newest concept, Humans, to the Jackson Hall stage. With a specially designed and highly intimate seating arrangement, 10 dancers take us on a stirring journey of what it means to be human and of how our bodies, our connections and our aspirations all form part of who we are. They lead us to reflect on our lives, our loved ones, the burdens we carry, and the physical and emotional strength it takes to overcome them. The performers push the boundaries of the art form, blurring the lines between movement, dance, theater and circus—and lead the way with a diverse range of thrilling creations that “redraw the limits to which circus can aspire” (The Age). Rosie Kay Dance Company: 5 Soldiers A thrilling and humane portrait of army life tells the stories of five men and women serving on the front line. In 2008, choreographer Rosie Kay joined the 4th Battalion, The Rifles, to watch and participate in full battle exercises, and visited Great Britain’s Defence and National Rehabilitation Centre for Armed Forces. What came of these observations is this award-winning, five-star work. Deeply realistic, stark and thrilling, 5 Soldiers offers no moral stance on war, but instead questions what it is that we ask of our soldiers. With Kay’s trademark intense physical and athletic dance theatre, 5 Soldiers explores how the human body remains essential to war, even in the 21st century.

Melissa Aldana Quartet Representing “a new sense of possibility and direction in jazz” (The Washington Post), Chileanborn saxophonist Melissa Aldana is a prodigious talent whose instrumental chops and creative improvisations are a family tradition. As a child, Aldana studied with her renowned saxophonist father, Marcos Aldana (son of saxophonist Enrique Aldana, whose Selmer Mark VI tenor Melissa performs with to this day). She began on alto but after hearing Sonny Rollins she switched to tenor and never looked back. For her Mondavi Center debut, Aldana will perform a standard jazz set alongside her suite, Visions for Frida Kahlo, dedicated to the painter Frida Kahlo.

Cécile McLorin Salvant Ogresse Cécile McLorin Salvant’s Ogresse is an original song cycle on which she collaborated with arranger and conductor Darcy James Argue. This latest project from the two-time Grammy winner is a work both musical and narrative, a fairytale-like musical journey about a female ogre who falls in love with a man and, in the end, devours him. Since the release of Cécile, her 2010 debut album, Salvant has been wowing critics and audiences, including in her three Mondavi Center performances over the past four years. Backed with a big band and ingenious arrangements by Argue, this parable that touches on race and gender with humor and insight is a landmark artistic statement for Salvant.

Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo Celebrating more than 40 years of presenting their playful, but decidedly rigorous, view of traditional, classical ballet en travesti, the Trocks return to the Mondavi Center stage with their inspired blend of loving knowledge of dance, comic approach and the astounding fact that men can, indeed, dance en pointe without falling flat on their faces. From the early days of performing in late-late shows in off-off Broadway lofts to the stages of the Bolshoi and the Folies Bergère, this company of professional male dancers have deservedly enjoyed both popular and critical success around the world.

Alfredo Rodríguez & Pedrito Martinez Grammy-nominated artists Alfredo Rodríguez and Pedrito Martinez first worked together on Rodríguez’s 2012 release Invasion Parade. Since that initial recording session, they have had the rare occasion to perform together as a duo, leaving audiences completely mesmerized by their fearless and virtuosic playing. Each artist brings a different approach to the collaboration. Rodríguez was schooled in the rigorous classical conservatories of Havana, and his playing is informed as much by Bach and Stravinsky as it is by his Afro Cuban and jazz roots. Martinez’s musical training came directly from the streets of the Cayo Hueso neighborhood of Old Havana in which he was raised.

As League describes the group, “In combining our different accents I feel that there is a strangely common and poignant sound, one that can reach and relate to listeners around the world.”
