WHAT IS BUSINESS LAW AND TAXATION? Around the world, businesses operate in an increasingly complex environment and are subject to a range of legal and regulatory responsibilities. Business Law and Taxation is the study of the laws and regulations that govern how businesses operate. It looks at what the law is, how it applies, and what impact it has.

Studying business law and taxation units as part of a business degree provides students with the skills they need to identify and manage legal risks, and to take advantage of commercial opportunities.

Businesses need graduates with strong knowledge of the legal rules and processes they need to comply with in order to operate effectively and efficiently.

This includes contract law, competition law, employment, consumer and creditor protection, as well as commercial, workplace, international trade, sustainability and taxation law.

All Business Law and Taxation units are taught using a ‘law for business’ approach, which is tailored to the needs of modern organisations.

They cover essential workplace skills, as well as specialist legal knowledge, relevant to the challenges that businesses encounter today.

Please note that the units you study in Business Law and Taxation do not qualify you to practice as an Australian lawyer.

WAYS TO STUDY BUSINESS LAW AND TAXATION At Monash Business School, you can study Business Law and Taxation with a comprehensive Bachelor of Business or Commerce degree. You can either major in Business Law or Taxation in a Bachelor of Business, or you can minor in Business Law in a Bachelor of Commerce.

Bachelor of Business – Business Law major or minor Caulfield campus A Bachelor of Business will give you a broad business skill set.

It covers accounting, marketing, business law, management, economics, business statistics and finance. Learn what makes markets, brands and organisations function effectively.

Choose a Business Law major to understand how knowledge of legal and regulatory requirements supports business decision making and how to identify and manage legal risks.

Bachelor of Business – Taxation major or minor Caulfield campus Choose a Taxation major to understand the legal, commercial and economic impacts of taxation, current taxation concepts and different taxation systems.

Bachelor of Commerce – Business Law minor Clayton campus A Bachelor of Commerce will give you an analytical and conceptual skill set. It covers leadership, innovation and policy development. Learn to think conceptually, use data, solve problems and make informed decisions.

Choose a Business Law minor to develop a foundational understanding of the legal and regulatory requirements that impact business and develop the confidence to recognise and manage legal risks.

Double degrees with Monash Business School A double degree with Monash Business School offers you a depth of knowledge by allowing you to study two disciplines from within the Business School.

Combine a Bachelor of Business majoring in Business Law or Taxation with a Bachelor in Accounting, Banking and Finance, Marketing, or International Business.

Combine a Bachelor of Commerce minoring in Business Law and Taxation with a Bachelor of Actuarial Science, Economics, or Finance.

Double degrees with other faculties A double degree with another faculty offers you a breadth of knowledge, as you study across disciplines and explore two interests.

Combine a Bachelor of Business with a major or minor in Business Law or Taxation with a Bachelor of Arts, Design, Fine Arts, Information Technology, or Media Communication.

A Bachelor of Business can also be combined with a Bachelor of Education (Honours).
