BEGINNING YOUR BUSINESS JOURNEY Monash Business School will prepare you for a career in business, however you imagine it. With our huge range of degrees, majors and electives, you can tailor your study to meet your interests and goals. Do you want a comprehensive or specialist degree? Do you know exactly what area of business you want to study? Or do you want to taste‑test a few different areas first? See pages 10 and 17 to understand if a comprehensive course or a specialist course is right for you.

Lean into your strengths A good way to understand a business or commerce path is to consider these differences:

How much maths have you done? The level of maths you complete in Year 12 will determine your options. If you’re interested in the Bachelor of Commerce, you’ll need Year 12 higher maths and an ATAR of 86+. The Bachelor of Business requires Year 12 maths and an ATAR of 76+, or you can do a Bachelor of Business Administration with Year 11 maths and an ATAR of 70+. The table on page 29 provides more detail on ATAR and IB requirements.

As a general rule, our business courses (Bachelor of Business and Bachelor of Business Administration) have a stronger focus on people-based functions such as marketing, management, business law and human resources. Choosing Business will offer a deep insight into how organisations work across all business functions. Commerce is more analytical and

DOUBLE THE DEGREE FAST TRACK A SECOND DEGREE! If you’re feeling the pull to explore more than one discipline, a double degree could be the right move. Monash offer one of the largest double degree programs in the country – giving you the freedom to combine your business studies with other areas of interest, including law, engineering, arts, education and IT. Most double degree programs require just one extra year of study. By using the electives from one degree to make up the required units from the other, you’ll graduate at least two years sooner than if you studied the courses separately. It’s a great way to build your skills and expand your employability.

Pursue what you’re interested in – which might be languages, international relations, behavioural studies or any one of 40 arts majors – while achieving a skillset to apply in any professional setting. For instance you could combine a business analytics major in your Commerce degree with a theatre studies major in your Arts degree to get a head start in entertainment.

Biomedical science is responsible for many of the breakthroughs that have shaped the history of human health – and the work never stops. For every disease cured, life prolonged or discovery made, many more challenges lie ahead. As research continues and the industry inevitably expands, the need for effective commercialisation is also growing.

The experience of opening your new iPhone box. How you feel when you walk into your favourite store. The most successful businesses know that smart design is the key to standing out. This double degree will teach you how to see the world of business through a designer’s lens.

Commerce

What defines us as individuals also define us as systems – of action, behaviour and data. If you’ve got an analytical mind, you might recognise the potential here. From algorithms and big data, to digital innovation, this double degree will show you how analytical insight can be used to face challenges and create opportunities in the commercial world. FIND YOUR BUSINESS INTEREST AREA There are a number of ways to explore a business interest area to study. It just depends on the emphasis you choose. You can do an entire Bachelor degree in one discipline and choose to undertake a second major or minor by using your elective units. A major is a main area of study made up of eight units and a minor is a second focus area made up of four units. You can also pick up electives in each area of interest. ACCOUNTING

Accounting involves communicating business information – classifying, verifying, recording, analysing, interpreting and applying professional judgement – to make strategic decisions about an organisation’s financial and non-financial situation. 8 8 8 8

SPECIALIST COURSES Have a pretty good idea of where you’re headed? With a specialist course, you’ll take up to 16 units in your specialist area. Focusing your studies in one area will allow you to start building a specific skill set from day one. The great thing about specialist courses is that they’re specifically designed to ensure that you meet any accreditation requirements needed for your future professional field, while giving you flexibility to do other things within your degree.
